10/26/24 Located in Koloa, this market is a small but very convenient. There is even a cooked food section. Koloa is a town in the southeastern part of Kaua'i, close to Poipu. I consider Sueoka Market as its central point of interest. Additionally, it's near the old sugar mill/plantation. Big Save is about a couple of blocks from Sueoka, also near the post office. The parking lot is small but can easily accommodate its patrons. It's not as big as Safeway or Foodland but it contains all your basic needs for groceries: meat, seafood/poke, fresh fruits, vegetables (very limited) & of course dry goods, too. What surprised me is their access to self checkout because it does not match their dated store--very convenient. I cannot speak to their customer service coz I didn't encounter it at this visit. All I bought was the pork stew meat for my sinigang. Aisles are pretty clear, organized shelves & labeled. Price point, fair for the region I would consider returning if in the area to shop here. read more

This review may be a little biased as my cousin works here and we visited this store for the first time ever in all the years coming to Kauai. If we didn't come to visit her, I don't think our paths would've crossed this Big Save location. My thoughts this store is mostly for locals and some tourists that have taken the wrong turn when going somewhere. Big Save Market has many local items you can't buy at the big box stores and also has the standard things you always need. We especially heard about this Hawaiian Frost ice cream and Shaka Pops. Also went the next day to purchase chicken, and the only chicken they had available had a use by/freeze by date of the day before. Store is a nightmare. Towering array alcoholic products dominate the front door. Bulky product displays block aisles, along with vendor and staff stocking shelves, all times of the day. Big Save is like Santo Market in San Jose. It's a market where you can get some excellent Poke. The difference is that Big Save has a much better variety and even a better deal since their prices are cheaper for BETTER poke! Try the Spicy Ahi. It's has the perfect kick and texture and compliments rice so well. The key to great poke is the right balance of lubricity (just thought of that word. Probably not fitting but it popped in my mind), freshness (obviously), size of the chunks, and tenderness of the tuna without a lot of gristle. When it's done right you will go thru withdrawals when you skip a day. I felt gypped by other places once I ordered here bc why would you pay $20+ per lb when the stuff here is about $12/lb? Located in the heart of Koloa town, Big Save is a small grocery store that has fair prices for both those that live on and visit the Island. Fresh produce, including fruits native to the island and those of tropical surroundings are readily available here. Beef & chicken from the butcher and fish locally sourced are available from behind the counter or in their self serve grab and go freezer section. Throughout the aisles, you will find all of the typical items you would expect in a grocery store along with a few specialty items that are Hawaiian made or Hawaiian inspired. Beer, wine, and spirits are sold here, so no need to to search for a liquor store while on the island. In California speak, this is the equivalent of a Ralph's or Stater Bros. Big Save has many of the grocery needs you'd buy on a trip in Kauai (alcohol, seafood, chips, drinks, hiking snacks). This location was conveniently located in the same area as a McDonald's, which is why I stopped by. There's a hot breakfast bar, lunch bar, fresh poke bar, etc if you want to grab a meal instead of going to a restaurant. They also have a variety of Lay's chips that you can't find on the mainland such as Chesapeake Bay Crab Spice flavor! I also bought a $1 water bottle from here, which they have a variety of sizes to choose from. There's also the option to buy a chilled bottle or room temperature one. Big Save is neither big nor a place to save much but it is convenient. Had to pick up some necessities to take back to the rental. Things have really changed in 10 years. Used to be a market more for locals but tonight it was packed with masses of tourists. Parking was horrendous. I guess even sleepy Koloa town has gone touristy. If you're planning on buying a lot, you're probably better off going to Lihue to do any major grocery shopping but if you need some basics, Big Save should meet your needs. Of all the places in Kauai, who knew that a supermarket would be my most frequented spot? The market itself is pretty standard, with the usual groceries and over-the-counter personal items you might need, but the huge draw for me was the hot foods area. Spam musubis are rolled fresh each morning and my husband ate his weight in these over the course of our stay here and claimed that Big Save set the standard for the musubis, as far as taste and rice-to-meat proportion. I took advantage of the breakfast bar, where plates of eggs, rice, and a variety of proteins can be served up in homey containers. My breakfast of choice every single morning was rice and eggs, with a ladleful of gravy over the top of the rice and a drizzle of ketchup over the eggs. Simple? Yes. Satisfying? Like nothing else. There are some other to-go foods, both hot and cold, such as hand rolls, char siu buns, and fried chicken tenders. We found these to be just all right compared to the musubis and hot breakfast bar, but we appreciated the variety just the same. read more

Big Save is a branch of the Times supermarkets, and this one is located in old Koloa on the way to Poipu and environs in South Kauai. Prices change each Wednesday and can be found at www.timessupermarkets.com. Stopped by here to compare prices with Costco in Lihue. Pineapple $0.99 a pound for a 3.5/lb fruit, vs to $2.99 for a 4.5 lb fruit at Costco. POG $4.98 a gallon vs Costco $4.19 a gallon. Non fat milk $5.48 a gallon, vs Costco $4.19 a gallon. In California, Costco sells 2 gallons of nonfat milk for a total of $3.49! Salad $3.99 for 12 oz, vs $2.99 for 19 oz including dressing at Costco. 4 oz salad dressing at Big Save is $2. Rotisserie chicken 32 oz for $8.49, vs Costco's 48 oz for $4.99. BS price is almost triple that of Costco! Granola cereal $5.98 for 12 oz vs $7.98 for 24 oz at Costco. Bananas $1.29/lb vs $2.49 for 3 pounds at Costco. Blueberries $3.99 for 6 oz vs $9.99 for 18 oz at Costco. Blackberries $4.99 for 6oz vs $4.99 for 12 oz at Costco. 32 oz Greek plain low fat yogurt $3.49 vs 48 oz for $5.99 at Costco 16 oz whole wheat bread $3.29 vs $6.99 for 32 oz at Costco. Costco total bill was $75, compared to $103 for similar quantities at Big Save. And Big Save is among the cheaper supermarkets on the islands, cheaper than Foodland, let alone Safeway. Big Save (BS) is competitive with Costco on the liquids, yogurt and bread, but gets killed on the chicken and fruits, and that's no BS! Stopped by here also so that the wife could use the bathroom in the back. BS have 5 ounce boxes of chocolate macadamia nuts for $3.98, among the lowest prices I have seen. However since I retired in 2015,` my coworkers are SOL if they expect me to bring these to the office to share! read more

I did give this market a second try around lunchtime and it was much better! The shelves and dairy were restocked during the week, and the poke bar was open for business.
