I occasionally come to this store when I'm passing through Waimea. I needed lunch so bought a loco moco bowl. Only of two somewhat "ok" selections from the warmer. Bowls were not of hot temperature. Warm. Overall, the bowl was not good. The beef patties were stiff and dry, as if they were cooked the previous day, refrigerated and reheated several times. The gravy was alittle salty. One of the eggs were over cooked, while the other egg was runny, as it should be. I gave two thirds of the bowl to the nearby chickens. They had closed their hot food selection counter. By the way, I should mention that several years ago I got a chili bowl and about an hour later, I almost passed out while driving. I was so sick, my legs were shaking it was weird, as if I got drugged. It never ever happened before. So it was strange. I was absolutely fine before I ate that bowl of food. Otherwise, this is a good store, it has everything. A bit outdated but it's a store from way back when I was a kid. I have alot of great memories from the 60s and 70s. My dad bought me tons of toys and stuff when this store was Big Save/Ben Frankin. Times hasn't changed it much from those days, just the Deli department pretty much. We needed to get some snacks before going out for the day, so we got a few musubis for the road. We grabbed three different ones, so I was stuck with the longaniza musubi one. The flavor was good and there was enough rice for me, but I prefer the traditional ones or with a different meat instead. Overall, it was pretty tasty though! read more

Got enticed in here by the grilling of Huli Huli chicken outside. Grocery and take out food was decent and inexpensive. Got a Spam musubi but with Furikake - that was fresh and a good snack! The people working there were quite friendly and polite. I found those chocolate - toffee Macadamia nuts in large bags here, and they were about a buck cheaper than Safeway. It's on the Hiway itself so you can't miss it - turn into it as soon as you pass the bridge from Hanapepe to here. read more

Needing some Advil, all kinds of badly, Big Save was my shining beacon. For such a small store, there was a lot jammed into the aisles & this included a lot of selection too For example, not only did they have Advil, they had tablets, gelcaps, small bottles, larger bottles....you get the idea We also saw a huge BBQ outside & whatever they were grilling up, there was already a huge line of locals waiting on it.....and assuming it wasn't a big grill of veggies, we didn't stick around to find out Thanks Big Save! The third best local grocery store (1st: Ishihara market, 2nd: foodland). There are still good pokes (tuna, tako) and delis here. Also there are more variety of chocolate, snack than Ishihara. This is just across the street from Ishihara, so it is possible to shop at both stores. read more

Very unfriendly, don't bother shopping here. They have a bathroom but denied letting us use it when our 6 year old needed one. A local told us that was wrong on our way out of this store. Nice going Big Save, the service industry does not last treating customers like this. Hopefully the owner reads this and changes the policy. read more

If coming to Kauai and staying at one of local hotels, you need to come here! My Husband and I came here to stock up on alcohol for our hotel room and I'm lad we did! Prices were good and we probably saved hundreds of dollars by not drinking at the bar every night. In addition to a good alcohol selection they also have everything else you may ever need for your trip to Kauai! You can pick up snacks, chips, crackers, meat, soda, juice, etc. Anything you may need for road trips or to cook a good dinner! They are always busy, and the store is rather small, but they fit a lot into the small space! read more

We had used their bathroom due to the next door Obsession Café did not have one. By the cashier #1, there is a key for the bathroom. It seems everybody who worked there were smiling and friendly. This was our go to place for standard groceries while living in Kekaha, but more out of necessity than anything else. Of course, almost everything sold in Hawaii is a bit more expensive than the mainland, but Big Save seemed to add a bit on top of that as well. They were generally pretty good at keeping things stocked except for the first day of a new sale - then, almost everything that had been advertised in the paper ad would be sold out almost immediately. The fruit was typically hit or miss, but they did have the best apple-bananas of anywhere we tried on the island. The meat left something to be desired, but the locals would probably disagree with that. I guess we are just from places with more selection and higher quality, so we have higher expectations. The staff was generally friendly and helpful. If you are on the far west side of the island, there aren't a lot of places to shop, but this is probably the best there is. read more

Stopped by here on our first day in Kauai to get some groceries after a fabulous hike. They have a plate lunch deli which serves somewhat innocuous chicken and BBQ spare ribs, so we got some to go. It was so much food for only ~$10 that I likely won't need dinner. Ribs were A+! I will certainly be back! read more

They have very little produce selection and what they did have was in poor condition. I went on a Thursday and wanted to purchase ground beef. The meat cutter told me they were out and did not expect more till Saturday. What?!?! This is the first time I've ever shopped at a grocery store that didn't have ground beef...needless to say I had to drive all the way to Eleele Big Save for my ground beef and produce. The Eleele location had a wider variety of produce and it was fresh! They also had lots of ground beef...comes down to very poor management at the Waimea store. read more

This is actually an important review for anyone visiting Kauai becaue Big Saves are everywhere and can really be a lifesaver for budget-friendly locals and tourists alike. You buy your basics here, you save money, they are just as friendly as your local grocery store, and it's a huge price cut compared to the resorts. It's nothing fancy, pretty straight-forward but this is the staple of your vacation if you aren't a millionaire. We went to the location Waimea and probably every other across the island. Pay attention to what's grown locally, as opposed to what's imported. Key purchases: $1.19 for a liter of water and $25 for a 30-pack of beer, compared with astronomical prices at resorts and tourist stations near the big sites. read more

We thought this was a great little store. We stopped here several times for our groceries while staying in Waimea. Yes some things are more expensive, but heck, we are in Kauai. The deli was great and we picked up a few items there, but mostly we bought meat and produce. Staff were always friendly and there was always something on sale. read more

Staying at the Waimea Plantation cottages this was the go to place for me and my husband to buy groceries. While it is kind of expensive for groceries, it's still cheaper cooking at the cottages, than eating at the restaurants every morning and night. Not a huge selection, but still enough. Quick and easy. read more

If you're coming to Kauai stay as far away from this market as possible! Go to Safeway in kapaa and Costco in Lihue the prices are high and selection is horrible! If you're local you should do like I do and go to Safeway and Costco once a month from the westside and limit your exposure to Times/big save (big spend) to emergencies! read more

went there while touring with Na Pali Riders. they are across the street. grabbed a tempura shrimp handroll, best food I had for the whole week. my husband had the loco moco and was decent for lunch, had another handroll and my husband loved the Chili bowl with rice. all for less than $5 an item, can't beat that in Kauai. read more
