I want to be clear -- I **loved** this place. Their dim sum? Incredible. Their entrees? Always on point. Big Sky was my **go-to Chinese food spot in Riverside** for years. **Then tonight happened.** I placed a DoorDash pickup order at their new location -- sweet and sour pork, beef chow fun, beef porridge, pork and shrimp siu mai, and white rice. They even threw in extra rice, and I was genuinely excited to dig in. That excitement ended the moment I looked down at my bowl and found a **MAGGOT sitting on top of my rice.** I called the restaurant immediately and calmly explained what happened. They told me to contact DoorDash since that's how I ordered. Fine. I reported it through DoorDash's platform and waited. Then I got a call back from DoorDash -- not to help me, but to relay a message: **Big Sky had contacted them specifically to refuse my refund.** Let that sink in. A customer found a maggot in their food, couldn't eat a single bite of a $54.19 order, and the restaurant's response was to **actively call DoorDash to make sure I didn't get my money back.** I understand that occasionally bugs happen in food service. It's gross, but I was fully prepared to move on had they simply taken responsibility. Instead, they chose to fight a $54 refund over a maggot. Updated: October 31, 2025 This is for those who are trying to go to BSB. This is our go to place for dim sum. They are still in operation but not at the location they once were in. They are currently operating inside Hong Kong Express which is less than a block east of their old place. They are awaiting permits for the space next door. We were a bit hesitant because it looks like Chinese fast food but they have a smaller version of their original menu. We were able to order our favorites & it was all good. I think they have the best pork and preserved egg congee with Chinese donuts. I look forward to when they will be in their own space. It's still the best Chinese restaurant in the IE. Service is always on point, these guys know how to foster relationships and make you feel welcome. I have been coming here since they opened. This new location is newly remodeled, ambiance is intimate, and parking is plentiful. My favorite dishes are the yang chow fried rice, deep fried pork chops, Singapore noodles, and lemon iced tea. Big Sky is great-- One of the best Hong Kong style restaurants around, even compared to places in Rowland Heights. A little pricey, but hey, I'm saving in gas. Portions are generally pretty big too. I ordered a couple different things on my last visit. I noticed that the hand-shredded chicken (手撕鸡) is off the menu now, but the staff were nice enough to make it for me anyway on request! I really enjoyed the salt and pepper squid as well. Nice, big pieces of squid that weren't all batter. Roasted duck was better than what you can find at 99 Ranch, with crispier skin and a better temp. While the flavor of the crispy noodle (两面黄) was good, there was a little too much sauce. Not too many traditional Chinese spots in this part of town except for a handful by UCR and I'm on a mission to try them all. Tonight I settled on Big Sky Bistro which serves pretty traditional Cantonese fare and Dim Sum. I was dining with friends who have more "American" tastes so I wanted to make sure there was something they liked. Of course, I got a few traditional dishes too! Now what did we think of the food? There were hits and misses. If you're looking for the traditional Sichuan Mapo Tofu, this is a pass. It was too mild, no Szechuan peppercorn flavor or numbing and too watery. Still tasty and at least it had ground meat but we've had much better and also much worse elsewhere. Salt and Pepper Tofu was good but really only immediately out of the fryer so it doesn't travel well. We all liked the French Style Beef and Walnut Shrimp but it's nothing special and pretty standard. The standout dish was the Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables. The pork belly was melt in your mouth tender and surprisingly even my friends liked the preserved vegetables in it. I personally enjoyed the Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice. The salted fish adds a bit of stink, almost like fish sauce but imparts wonderful umami flavor. My friends didn't dare try the fried rice but it's really not that out there (they're not the most adventurous) and it's something a lot of us Asian enjoy! Overall, good traditional Chinese comfort food. It felt like eating at grandmas house. Even though I didn't get it this time, I just know this will be the spot when I'm sick and want pork and century egg congee. With a casual atmosphere, quick service, and never any wait times, I often go in my PJs for an improvised dinner when too lazy to cook. There are lots of vegetarian dishes to choose from. They're really good, but I do remember the animal based dishes being quite a bit better-- more flavorful and better seasoned. My favorite was the hand shredded chicken with jellyfish and the HK style spare ribs. The veggie dishes are light and healthy tasting though with less salt and oil in comparison. Personally though, when I want Chinese food, I want something home style-- meaning savory, saucy, and spicy. Prices have not been so good lately. I haven't come as much as I used to because of it. Other Chinese restaurants, closer to Rowland Heights-Pasadena are a lot cheaper and just as delicious. I still crave Big Sky on occasion though. This is my go-to dim sum restaurant in the Riverside area. It's definitely got the Cantonese dim sum house feel. I always wonder why it never gets buzzing like the ones in more Asian neighborhoods. But I enjoy the hidden gem feel of it. Food is reliable. Good dim sum options, has all the classics. You order from a menu instead of choosing from a cart being pushed around. Service is at a good pace. They really try their best to accommodate you. I wish the sweetened lemon tea had more lemon slices though. Love this place. Give it a try; it won't disappoint. This place is my go to Chinese food spot. Their food is always delicious every single time we go. I LOVE their egg drop soup, I'm always on the hunt for a good one. This is the only one that reminds me of the one I grew up eating at one of my fav spots in Bakersfield, I had never found another one that tasted as good at any other Chinese restaurant. They also have really good chicken fried rice + their soup dumplings are so yummy. The first time I tried the soup dumplings I wasn't that into them but I tried them again recently and they're so good. I always come here with my family or with my fiancé. The service is always amazing and staff is nice. I always get the milk tea as well and it's basically unlimited refills. Dim sum in Riverside! Although the selection is not great, to be able to get decent dim sum without going very far is certainly a plus. Got the standard steamed shrimp dumplings, pork & shrimp dumplings, vegetables wrapped in tofu skin, Shanghai juicy dumplings, salt & pepper chicken wings, stuffed sticky rice in lotus leaves, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, and lobster noodles. They didn't have a seafood tank visible but the lobster was live and must have been kept in a tank inside the kitchen. The noodles were not the best, but passable. And if I can get fresh lobster noodles in Riverside, I am not complaining! The standouts were the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce and the salt and pepper chicken wings. The broccoli was really fresh, perfectly cooked, and crunchy. Chicken wings were succulent and delicious. The other dim sum dishes were all quite decent. Service was not very attentive, typical of a Chinese restaurant that is not super classy. The restaurant is quite spacious, didn't feel cramped. My only complaint was that some of the prices were unreasonably high. $11.88 for the stuffed sticky rice in lotus leaves and the Shanghai juicy dumplings were just out of line. I was intrigued by this restaurant that some said had good food but poor service. For me, for a Chinese restaurant, it is a must try. I'm an ABC (American Born Chinese), so I'm used to service that might be subpar. My husband and i went on a Friday night aims 730p. It wasn't too busy. The parking lot is a bit abandoned as the other businesses are closed on the south side of the building. I would suggest parking on the north side. We were greeted by a friendly waitress and seated right away. They gave us plenty of time to look over the menu but not so much that we were waiting-- it was perfect. The staff are Chinese (speak Cantonese), so this is always a good indication. I'm sorry to disappoint the naysayers, but the food was very good and the service was excellent. We ordered the Wor Wonton soup, beef chow fun and the combination plate with duck, soy sauce chicken (they were out of spare ribs--a disappointment) and crispy pork belly. Finally a dim sum location in riverside that can stand on his own against the oc ones. The area it's located is honestly kinda sketch. However, the parking lot looked secure. We went on a Sunday and there was plenty of seating. Their set up still has lasting effects of covid times because they dedicate a large section to their take out assembly line. The tables and chairs were clean. The sauces could use a wipe down, but nothing a napkin can't fix. There also seemed to be some roof damage in a corner they had blocked off. We made reservations for a group of 12 We show up the restaurant is empty and took 10 min to be greeted. We finally were sat at a table and after 15 minutes we're finally acknowledged . The food was delicious not amazing but delicious. We wanted to order a variety of dishes so everyone would be happy . Opened up the Chinese New Year by trying out Big Sky Bistro for dinner. Came by as first timers, but left feeling like we may have just found our new spot for Chinese food in the area. Plenty of tables in their dining room to service customers who would like to dine in or even host a small celebration. They seemed to be fully staffed the night we came in. As noted, service was friendly and attentive. Food was prepared and brought out to us in an extremely timely manner. This complemented the excellent food perfectly. Came here for dinner tonight to celebrate Chinese New Year. We ordered family style and got the French Style Beef Steak Cube and Shrimp Flat Rice Noodle. French Style Beef Steak Cube: 8/10. The beef was pretty flavorful and well-cooked, though definitely not spicy at all despite being designated as spicy on the menu. We also really liked the mushroom in this dish. Shrimp Flat Rice Noodle: 7/10. This was a decent dish, and the noodles and shrimp were cooked well, but overall was missing quite a bit of flavor. We had to add chili oil to the noodles, which slightly improved it. I've also previously tried some of the dim sum here before, and really liked the shu mai, soup dumplings, and vegetable wrapped in tofu skin. I think this place has pretty good food though it's a bit more expensive than I think it's worth. But it is also one of the only dim sum restaurants here in Riverside, so still a good place to go if you're craving authentic Chinese food and don't want to travel too far. read more

We ordered a few different dishes from orange chicken, to lemon chicken, to Singapore vegetable noodles, to egg drop soup with tofu, which I never knew was a thing. One I was highly disappointed with the prices. Each dish was about $18 dollars, even though they were family style this was considerably higher than any other family style dinner I've been too. Two, the dishes were lack luster. The lemon chicken was flavorless, orange chicken was flavorless, egg drop was unorthodox, full of lots of veggies and tofu, and devout of flavor. Big Surprise Bistro for me! I was dropping my daughter back to UC Riverside when we were in search for some Asian soul food. Big Sky Bistro came up on our search. What a surprise and delight. Living in the North OC I have wonderful choice of Asian cuisine. Big Sky offered big flavors that made feel at home. The menu offered some modest array of dim sum plates along with traditional fare. Both the shumai and shrimp dumplings (har gow) were big and plump. The XLB dumplings were good and best when hot. We added a bowl of Wor Wonton soup filled with big wontons, char shiu, Bok Choy and other ingredients. Along with that we had the seafood fried noodles. Everything was very satisfying. We ended with a very cute egg custard bao and mango pudding. Service was attentive and felt like I was with family. The ambience was a bit sterile. In front of their service area they had a large to go set up that took up a prominent space. It felt very cafeteria like. There wasn't any music playing, just the sounds of fellow diners and Cantonese being shouted from the kitchen. This place can really be elevated to a very nice restaurant if they relocated the to go packing area, played some soft music and had a nicer menu presentation. It would rival any Hong Kong style restaurant in Monterey Park. My daughter gladly took the leftovers to her dorm. I'm looking forward in returning to try other menu items.
