I go here all the time. And the SAME worker is always so rude. He wears a hat. Me and my bf were trying to pay and he yelled "hurry up!!! There's a line" obviously we know there is a line? I am not blind. He yelled that in front of all the customers and everyone in the line. and turns out the machine wasn't even working which is why we couldn't pay. So whose fault is that. Never yell at customers ever again because he clearly doesn't have good customer service. Everyone else is nice, especially guy with glasses and guy with a tattoo. But this same worker has a problem everyday, I know this because I go very week. and he shouldn't be working if he can't handle the stress when it gets busy or be able to understand what a customer is asking for. Also it seems like they choose what customer to make pay BEFORE they eat and customers who can pay AFTER? I noticed that.. why is that..? I would like an apology because I give them good service and I got treated like this.
This was my first time and was so excited that I forgot to take pictures. The place is small and clean, so if you come with a small group expect to get cozy with another small group. Most tables were taken and people were coming in and out, so it stayed busy the whole time. It works like this, you get a big bowl and start putting in your ingredients choosing proteins, fish balls, noodles, greens, etc. Everything is labeled, but not directly next to the ingredients instead the labels are on screens high on the walls. After you create your bowl, it gets weighed (you pay by the pound) and you select the broth (with spice level). You are asked to wait at your table while they finish. I later found that I overdid it slightly and ended up with a 2 pound bowl. The food came out pretty quick and hot, our last step was to get our sauces. When I finally sat to eat I had so many things in there that every time I picked up something different to eat. Everything I tried was really good. The good thing is that I had served myself so much that I could give a second opinion with my leftovers I will be back with my family soon to try again. UPDATE: After taking the leftovers home, the family decided that dinner would be here and I had to (happily) come back. Everyone at the table decided on a different theme and broth for their dinner, all with the same result, a double thumbs up. I almost forgot to take the picture.
TL;DR - Oden Spicy Hot Pot is a solid, affordable spicy hot pot spot where you pick your own ingredients and soup base, and they cook everything in the back for you. The ingredients are mostly frozen and the atmosphere/service are pretty basic, but I still like the price and food quality enough to give it 4 out of 5 stars. This place recently changed its store name, but the menu and options seem to be the same. Somehow it feels busier now, so maybe the restaurant is slowly gaining traction. I'm glad to see that, because it is a pretty practical spot when you want something filling and customizable. For food, the setup is simple: you choose your ingredients and soup base, then the price is based on weight. I do think most of the ingredients are frozen, and I would guess the soup base is pre-made too, but for the price, I still think the quality is good. If you order more than 1.5 pounds and pay cash, you can get a free drink, which is a nice little deal. Atmosphere is just okay, around 3/5 for me. Service is also around 3/5. Recently, because it has been busy, you may have to wait a few minutes before getting seated. There only seem to be a couple of waitresses handling 20-plus tables, so it can get hectic when the restaurant is full. Parking is easy, with plenty of spots outside. Overall, I'd come back when I'm craving this style of hot pot.
This place's parent company is Yin-Tang, if you've ever been to one. They are very similar except they don't have the dry skewer bar. Nonetheless, they have a good variety of everything you need: proteins, veggies, and noodles. I think the layout is just a little weird. The items are not labeled directly where you find them. It's actually all labeled in the screens above them. The soup selection is located behind you, when you pay, and not beside or above the cashier. When you get here, you'll understand why this is weird. It's a small place, sand there's only so much searing, so I except there's a wait often. If you've never been to a Malatang style restaurant, this place might confuse you just cue to the layout. Food was great though and it came out fast! Service is nice and quick. I brought first timers and they loved it too.
Honestly... this is my new favorite spot + my first time ever trying hot pot. I've already been multiple times because of how much I love it lol. You can build your own bowl & they have plenty of items to choose from. You do get charged by the pound + they offer different broth bases. I didn't realize till last time that they also offer Japanese ramen. My fiancé really stacks his bowl up but for mine I mostly grab the beef brisket, hot dogs and heart shaped eggs haha(or sometimes bacon). They weigh it when you're done, take it back & then when it's ready they bring it out to you. It's been bomb every single time we go. They also have a little stamp card so be sure to ask for one if you're planning on going back. What a great new addition to the UV.

So it's priced per pound so whether you get 4 pounds of meat or veggies or noodles it's all going to be priced the same. So for you poor college kids (or asians), get all the meat you can. For everyone else, just do whatever. After you fill your bowl, pick a soup base, then wait for the magic. It's a filling experience quite literally as I had about like 2.5 meals leftover, but I also overestimated how much food I got. Even so, prices weren't atrocious so I'm not complaining. So all in all, this is a solid hot pot spot in Riverside for anyone and everyone!
Walked inside the restaurant at 8:50 with my wife and 3 kids They automatically told us we can't eat in here because they close at 9:30. The little Asian dude was rude, he said last call is at 9:00pm and 9:10 to order to go, we paid litterly before 9:00pm and they still didn't let us eat here and was rude. We would come here atleast 1-2 times a week and now we will no longer be coming back!
I've never tried hotpot prior to this place and honestly I enjoyed this restaurant. I had their original beef broth with mild spice level with ramen, shredded beef, bok choy, enoki mushrooms, cabbage, imitation crab and eggs. It was a 10/10. I also paired it with a concoction of a sauce and it was great . They have a variety of meats, seafood, noodles, vegetables. Etc. Basically a build-your-own-soup. It is then weighed per pound which is $13.99 per. I will definitely be back.
So happy there's a Malatang spot in Riverside! I've been here way too many times (somehow not enough) since it's opened. They have a great selection of ingredients for anyone (vegetarian's and non). It's easy to customize your bowl to your liking. Staff here are friendly and quick, once you're done filling your bowl and weighing it, it takes about 10-15 minutes until your food comes out. The perfect time to make your dipping sauce at their little sauce bar. It can get busy depending on the hours and days you go, but it moves quickly! It's a solid medium sized restaurant, best for small groups, couples, and solo!
This place is not an all you can eat spot. The best way I can describe it, is if Mongolian BBQ and a ramen spot had a baby. They have all the ingredients out for you, and you can fully customize your bowl. I went a little crazy on loading up my bowl with ingredients so tread carefully because it is very filling. As far as the flavor of the broth it was ok. There wasn't a deep rich flavor like I was expecting. I go to a lot of hot pot places so the standard for me is a little higher. I didn't see any ponzu or yuzu sauce to dip the meat and veggies in. The service was great the people there were really nice. Inside the restaurant is a little tight. If it's busy you're going to be waiting a while.
I think this place is pretty good for what you can get in the inland empire for malatang, where you pick all your ingredients and at the end, they weigh it and cook it with your choice of broth or dry mix. There was plenty of selection for all hot pot items. However, the only limit seems to be meat since I only saw two choices. I opted for the sour and spicy beef broth and it was really good. It reminded me of the sauerkraut broth you would get with fish. Food came out pretty quick and service was solid. At the end you would just need to go up to pay (so you pay after you eat). GREAT DEAL FOR A PLACE NEAR UCR! Located in the UV, walking distance from the UCR campus, this authentic hot pot spot is so great. I can choose my own ingredients and pay by weight. The vegetables and other items are pretty fresh. Also the broth is so good. For Riverside, this place is totally worth the wait & it's decently priced as well. Make sure to check out the sauce bar to make your meat sauce. The decor is Chinese modern and very light. The waiters are pretty fast & my dish was out super quick. Will definitely return!
Malatang.... but without the mala! The broths here actually don't have sichuan peppercorns! Choose all your veggies, protein, tofu, and ingredients you want, and pay for the weight. $13.99 per lb is a really good price. For the broths, I would recommend the Tomato for a very mild option. Not spicy at all! Very thick in consistency though. The Beef Broth is really tasty too. Flavorful and the spice is not too hot! My only gripe was they overcooked my potato noodles. Ingredients I recommend: + Laotan Sauerkraut + Lotus Roots + Fish Ball with Fish Roe + Scallop Salad Ball + Enoki Mushroom + Quail Eggs + Beef Tripe + Wide Potato Noodles + LOTS OF SPINACH

Food: Spicy Beef Broth (Choice: Medium Spice) - the broth is pretty tasty and i love spice so i chose medium level. i think it was spicy but i could honestly go for even spicier. the portion size is huge and not bad for the price. the topping and sauce selections were also pretty good. Service: You first put what you want in your bowl and they'll weigh it for you at the front and give you a number. They take your bowl to the back and bring it back out with the broth of your choice. Pretty standard and efficient process and service. Ambiance: It's pretty bright inside in the day and was really busy on cold + rainy days. It's pretty clean and I wouldn't say the place is huge but there's a decent amount of tables. The sauce bar is on the other side of the restaurant near the bathrooms and the bar for toppings and food that goes in the bowl appear on the side you enter. read more

Waited about 20 minutes for a party of 3 for dinner on a weekday. You're directed to your table (which is set up with chopsticks, napkin, spoon and cup of water for each person); then directed to the self serve station to fill your bowl. They have a large selection of veggies to choose from, but only had lamb and beef brisket as meat options. They have a 1 pound minimum, and pricing is $13.99/lb. Once finished, you're asked which broth & spice level you would like, and your bowl is taken & cooked. A self serve sauce station is on the other side of this small restaurant. Unlike other hot pot places I've been to, you let the cashier know which table you were sitting at, and pay after dining. Good & affordable option in the university area. read more

Great new hot pot spot in the University Village Plaza. Came in for lunch on a Sunday and there was no wait, although I've heard it can get busy for dinner. They have all of their meat, veggies, and fillings available for you to grab buffet style and charge you by the pound. About $14 per pound. I ended up paying about $20 for 1.32 pounds. The fillings were really good and there is a lot of variety! I liked the fish ball options they had. They had another station for sauce as well. Their spicy beef broth was pretty good, though I wish I had gotten a mild to taste the broth more. Note that medium is already pretty spicy. The restaurant is modern, sleek, and very clean. I was very excited when I saw this opening up since I wanted more hot pot options in the area. Although it's called Oden, it's really Chinese hot pot with Japanese-style broth. What makes this place great are the selection of hot pot toppings that you don't really have the option elsewhere like chrysanthemum leaves and lucky pouches. The toppings what I can tell are fresh even after the grand opening rush has stopped. Also, although it is by weight, you can get quite a bit of food and potentially take it home if it's too much, unlike a buffet. However, because it is by weight and not a pre-selected bowl of ingredients, I can avoid ingredients I'm allergic to, so it's a nice marriage to a buffet style with the ability to take my food home if I over-estimated my eating capacity. read more
ORDER broth #1 (4/5) it's $13.99/lb and completely customizable. you pick whatever toppings and broth you like. there are 4 broth options: bone broth, dry mix, tomato, and spicy & sour. i usually get the bone broth with medium spicy and there's only a slight kick. overall, the perfect addition to UVT! i've gone twice, once at dinner time and once at lunch. both times were crowded. i waited around an hour during dinner time and the wait list system could definitely be a bit more organized. they give you a little piece of paper with an number and you just wait to get called on. my number almost got skipped :') SERVICE it's always crowded inside, but they're still very attentive. AMBIANCE honestly a little cramped inside and each table only has 4 seats max, so maybe not the best for larger groups unless you split up. plenty of parking, which is a plus! read more
I was super excited to see a Malatang type restaurant open near UCR and while the basics are there I'd love to see them improve on the little details. The broth was extremely flavorful and the ingredients were fresh and clean. Despite the smaller space, the staff was able to keep the areas clean and well stocked. Unfortunately they haven't gotten the timing of cooking certain things yet as my glass noodle was no longer chewy and the spinach was still slightly raw. Overall, I'd still come back as it's a refreshing change to Riverside's food options. read more

You walk up to the food selection area and pick whatever you like -- they charge by weight, which is nice because you can control your portion. I had 1.1 lbs, and it turned out to be the perfect amount for one person. After choosing your ingredients, you select your soup base, and they cook it for you and bring the bubbling pot right to your table. It's simple, fast, and super satisfying. Recently opened inside the University Center! They're having a Grand Opening promotion where if you post them on any social media, you receive 20% off your order! The broths were so flavorful, with the perfect amount of spice. The meat, veggies, and carbs were organized and listed well, so you could easily discern what each item was. Everything was delicious and high-quality! They weigh the bowls before cooking and then hand you a receipt and a bracelet with a number. Tried this place for the first time a couple days ago. The location is very small but it's always packed so we had to check it out. It is self service style which i was skeptical about but i can say i was pleasantly surprised. They had several options to add to your soup including a variety of seafood, meats, vegetables, noodles, and much more. It is 13.99 per pound which is not bad at all. I chose to get the spicy mild bone broth and it is the best broth I've had at any hot spot place for sure. There is usually a wait time as i said it is a very small location but you can also choose take out. I will be back for sure and i highly recommend checking this place out. read more

Very kind staff welcomed my family of 7 and seated us right away! We got a few bowls and grabbed all of the meat, noodle, fish balls, and mushrooms at the assorted bar area. Around the corner there's a small sauce bar with all the classic sauce options. The staff were extremely kind and even helped to take our family photos and fill our waters. The restaurant is clean with music playing for a casual hot pot vibe. read more

Service was quick, however there was a slight wait for a table initially (10-15min around 6:00PM). The staff were all very nice and attentive! Came around 8PM on a weekday and it was packed. We were number 8 on the waitlist, but once we got seated the food came out in about 15 minutes, which is super fast for malatang. Parking was also easy to find. The customer service was above average. They were really attentive and offered to refill our water even when we barely drank any, which I appreciated. I ordered the #1 beef bone broth (mild). It still had a spicy aftertaste, but it was super flavorful and perfect for a rainy day. I added tofu, crab, bok choy, spinach, quail egg, beef, seaweed, meatballs, egg noodles, sweet potato glass noodles, mushroom, and baby corn. There is a wide variety of ingredients to choose from and everything tasted fresh. Price came out to around $13 to $14 and the value is honestly amazing for how filling it is. A couple small downsides: it is not super clean or dirty, kind of in the middle. The sauce bar glass bottles felt oily and could definitely be wiped down more often. Since it was raining, the floor was pretty wet and the wet floor signs were just leaning by the check-in area. Seating is also extremely cramped, especially when there is a waitlist, and the place is loud with mostly college students. Overall, I would still 100% recommend it. Great food, great value, fast service, and it really hits the spot when you want something warm and comforting. located right next to UCR at the UV! love that so many yummy food options have arisen around ucr over the years. parking is chill & free in the UV but make sure you read the signs around! it's mostly self service where you put together your own bowl & your own sauce. they weight your bowl and then cook your food, bringing it to your table as soon as its done. small space, but good for smaller groups. i believe the prices are around $13-$14 per lb read more
$20 for all this food, this was such an amazing deal! came here with some of my friends after meeting n lab, and the food was so good and everything was flavorful from the tomato soup broth, to the beef and all the other side options. the service was 10/10 and they were on top of it, refilling waters and getting our bowls to us in less than 5 minutes. the place was nice and new. at the end, they gave us lollipops and floss. definitely coming back here again for some good soup on cold days. one thing to note is that this place is more of a malatang style ordering spot, rather than a hot pot spot where you have your own pot and cook everything at the table. read more

I love malatang!! I was so happy that they opened one at UV, making it walkable from ucr. i love the variety of food choices they have and their soup broths are good. service is quick too. There could be wait times if you come during meal times but it is okay if you're okay waiting. I wish their original bone broth can be a lil less spicy... it still got a lil kick to it (i'm bad with spice) but it's still good and manageable. I like their lemon water it's always fresh and cold. read more
