Ever since I watched Surf's Up, I've made it a goal/bucketlist item to ride a wave (be inside a tube), and Ray made that dream come true. Ray, my instructor, was such an awesome human being! Horrible customer service! Through Groupon I purchased $200 worth of surfing lessons. I didn't realize it past the expiration date by one month, I called Big Wave Dave Surf Co to see if they would still allow me to use my Groupons and they said no and offered no form of redemption. $200 down the drain. This really needs to separate reviews. The coffee shop is great. An espresso taste like it should. Strong and not bitter. The other coffees were also good. We didn't try the food. The surf shop... we made reservations on Trip Advisor because the good reviews. It's a smaller surf shop behind the coffee shop. The staff seemed busy and very task oriented. (We had an 0830 apt) The front desk worker had 0 personality almost as if he is super bummed he's not surfing and stuck behind the check in desk. I was then bummed and worried the lessons were going to be the same. Luckily we got a young man named Jacob, he was awesome. Super friendly, great personality, got us some good waves and you would have thought we're all best friends out there catching waves, laughing, having a good time! (I mean until you heard him shout "paddle paddle paddle, STAND UP"). The photographer was out sick so no action photos but I would come here again. I had an amazing time learning to surf with this company. The instructors did an incredible job of breaking down the steps to ride and how to navigate in the water. Everyone in class was new and were able to catch waves throughout the class. I had so much fun! Overall definitely recommend to anyone who is scared to try it out, the instructors are encouraging and set you up for success. read more

Cool looking little shop with some local food items that would make good souvenirs and gifts. Unfortunately, my iced latte was very disappointing--I'd never voluntarily go back for it, and I seriously thought about whether I even wanted to drink the one I had, which is very rare for me. In the end, I tossed it after about a third as I walked into a bakery about a block away to get a different iced latte. The original one was watery and largely tasteless, and the coffee taste there was tasted more like dirt than coffee. BWD has been around for years. It started as a small shop off Koa St. I'm happy to see Dave still brings the Aloha Spirit to this fabulous location! We live here part time. And it's our go- to for early morning coffee and food. Don't be fooled that it's just a stop for coffee and the best chai in island. The food here is the real deal. I stopped by here earlier today for my morning coffee. We were staying close by to Big Wave Dave's Surf and coffee shop and so whenever it was getting later in the morning I headed on over. The inside of this shop is as described as it's a coffee shop as well as a surf shop. I ended up staying in the coffee shop portion only and it had an area to order you coffee, a display case full of baked goods and then an area where the baristas were making coffee. For my coffee on this morning I decided to go with a 12 oz latte. My order was maybe 4th or 5th in line so it took 5-10 minutes for them to make it before I was headed back to my hotel. Whenever it had cooled down enough I was able to try it and it ended up being pretty good. The coffee had a deep and rich flavor which the milk helped to cut through and there was a good amount of steamed milk. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. It's an interesting concept to have a combined coffee and surf shop, but it seems to be one that works well in Waikiki. read more

The service was super speedy and the person that took care of me at the counter was patient/answered my questions. The mango smoothie was great and had fresh mango chunks. I got my dad the iced caramel macchiato and by the looks of it being gone within a couple minutes I would say it was good. I got my mom an iced chai latte and she said it was great tasting compared to some other places. My brother got a caramel cold brew and he said it was alright (drank it all). I would give it a try! Update: its even more disappointing to have this experience and then be called a liar by the owner or have them act like you're a competitor on Yelp. Awful customer service. If you look at the 1 star reviews, you'll find one where a peeson with a nut alergy had nuts added to their food! Mistakes happen. Sometimes, staff is unkowladgeable, and it's a businesses job to address that not try and claim that a customer is lying or actually a competitor. How shameful. ------- Nothing is more disappointing than showing up to a place with proudly advertised gluten free creeps, only to be told in a rude tone that they technically aren't because the cooking surface is cross contaminated constantly (and you can see the chunks of cross contamination on the surface). It's already hard enough to find safe places to eat as a celiac whose dietary restriction is treated like a fad or it's in your head. I am so happy that I skipped the Dennys attached to my hotel and stopped in at Big Wave Dave's! They have many vegan and non vegan options. My Oat milk PB smoothie was filling and delicious. Alex Jones is an avid Sandy Hook denier and false information super spreader. Yet, his books are display in this business. Be mindful of who you give your money to, all who visit this store. Maybe he has a deal with the owner, seeing as how Alex owes about 1 billion dollars to the families of the Sandy Hook victims as of this week, I'm sure every book counts. The staff ignored us for several minutes. I understand being busy but it doesn't much effort to say "hi I'll be there in one sec". We were ignored long enough that my wife and I thought we had to order ourselves as the machine was facing the direction of the customers. We were promptly told "next time don't do that" if only that energy was used to direct traffic instead of on the customer who was trying not to be rude but whatever. After acknowledging we made an order albeit not the way they wanted, no one made our food or even verified what we ordered or anything. I understand we are to blame a little but I'm not trying to be rude or pushy. Several customers behind did the same thing and still got their food so it only seems as if we were being punished for making a mistake. All this to say honest mistakes happen but the attitude and lack of care was apparent from the Big Wave Dave Coffee employees working at 0734 in the morning on Friday 7 June 2024 at 226 Lewers Street. Their food looked good so try it out if you want but I hope others receive better customer service than we did. read more
