Clean and spacious restaurant with accessible seating and space. Staff were accommodating, courteous, and helpful. Food was mediocre and average. Quality/flavor of food was disappointing comparing to all of the similar restaurants near the area. The XLB skins were thick, Pan fried dumplings were a bit burnt, beef roll was thick and too soft, fried pork chop was bland, beef noodle soup was pretty salty. There was not one food that had any wow factor. It's not terrible but just OK. Some of the food items also took longer than expected for a pretty slow day at the restaurant. Found Princess Dumpling in Rowland Heights last week while we were checking out newly opened restaurants! Then we found out it's actually the sister restaurant of one of our favorite dumpling spots-- Prince Dumpling in Rosemead! We were craving their xiao long bao, but we got there a little too late. Still got to try pan-fried pork buns and other dumplings!! So no worries The scallion oil noodles are another favorite of ours. We came with a big group, so carbs like this pork cutlet and egg fried rice are a must to share. We ordered many great things to share, like veggies. Came for the XLB but was pleasantly surprised that literally everything else was super tasty, and might I say, better than the XLB? The crab and pork XLB was ok - I wasn't able to taste much of the crab itself and it's pretty steep at $17.99 for only six. Skin was fairly thin but could be thinner. The thing to get here is definitely the beef noodle soup - best qq noodles, large beef portions, and a rich, tasty broth. Their special salad was also a great starter with aromatic flavors. The black sesame XLB was actually one of the best dessert XLBs I've had and is much tastier than their savory version in my option. Skin was thinner, and flavors hit harder. This is Prince Dumpling's sister restaurant! Prince Dumpling has gained a ton of attention over their made-in-house XLB. The scallion pancake is CRISSSPPYYY. Very tasty. Cucumber salad needed a touch of soy sauce and chili oil for me. XLB taste just like prince dumpling, solid. But for me, the must get items are black pepper beef and garlic green beans. SO addictive. The black pepper beef is nicely caramelized, garlicky, peppery, and very tender. Perfect with a bowl of rice. The green beans taste different than any other Chinese restaurant that does garlic green beans. I taste five spice, but who knows. All I know is it's delicious. They were playing the World Cup game and the restaurant is nice and clean as well. I gotta come back to try the XL XLB, they didn't have it when I went unfortunately. So this is an interesting review for me. I tried this place with my wife and kids and my wife and I have different conclusions on all the dishes we tried. I think it's a spot we would visit again to try other dishes, and I think it does what it sets out to well. That said, they make choices with their food that agreed or disagreed with our preferences at different points. Before we get to the food, the restaurant is clean and the ambiance is what you would expect for the area. The main server went out of his way to be friendly and helpful and checked in on us several times, great job by him. On to the food. Kurobuta XLB - First controversial dish. If I had to pick one word for this XLB, I would say clean. I don't think this one goes out of it's way to be special, it has a clean flavor and good texture. The wrappers I felt were slightly thicker than Ding Tai Fung, but in a good way for me. I felt there was just enough chew to be satisfying, while letting the other ingredients do their part. The meat was soft and juicy, so no issues for me there. The soup is where it becomes a preference thing for me at least. When we poked a hole in the dumpling, a good amount of juice came out, but it was clean, almost clear. There was almost no oil floating on top, no fat in the soup. I can see how people would prefer this clean taste, I prefer the richness of the fat in my xlb and maybe a twist of some sort. This tastes healthier and is not a cheap option in the area, so it's not the highest price to value pick for me. I want to emphasize this is done well, just not necessarily to my preference. This would be for people who prefer Pine and Crane to the Taiwanese hole in the wall at the supermarket. Niu Rou Mian - Second controversial dish. On first taste, my wife thought this was one of the best niu rou mian's she's ever had, though I didn't necessarily agree. Two things stand out about this dish for me. First, their sliced beef is EXCELLENT, at least in the bowl we got. It was really good cut of meat, most, flavorful, soft enough to melt in your mouth while holding enough texture to be satisfying. One of the best, if not the best, sliced beef I can remember. The soup was also special in its texture. Most niu rou mian has a more standard, clear broth. This is almost like a western soup in that it's murky and has some viscosity to it. Very intense flavor. The noodles were also solid, no complaints from me. That said, that intense flavor from the soup was very straightforward. Strong, salty beef broth with very little of the herbs and spices that give other niu rou mian their signature accents. This, like the XLB, is a well prepared dish, but the taste lacks the complexity that makes it fun for me. Shanghai Braised Pork Belly - The kids and I enjoyed it, my wife was looking for Dong Pou Rou so wasn't too enthused. Like the other items, this is a well done dish. Fatty pork belly braised with what is essentially the flavor of char siu sauce. The pork itself had a great texture. The lean parts were moist, the fatty parts were soft and melty, no complaints there. Like the other dishes, a straightforward taste profile, if you've had char siu, you know what the basic flavor is. My kids loved it though and it's good for what it is. Chocolate XLB - We had an order of chocolate XLB for dessert and the kids and I enjoyed it. Basically, this rich chocolate filling in the same XLB wrappers we've seen before. For me, this type of dessert reminds me of chocolate filled mochi, but I actually enjoy these more. The texture of the wrapper has some of the satisfying chew of the mochi without being too much the way I feel some mochis are. All in all, I do think the people who run the kitchen in this place are talented and skilled, and they're accomplishing the goals they're setitng out to do. The food is clean, straightforward, and well executed. We'll probably be back to try some of their rice cakes and beef pancakes just to see. For my family, this isn't a place we plan on going to regularly since we have places that fit our preferences better for a lower price, but I can see how people can really appreciate this food. Order the beef noodle soup and pork kurobuta xiaolongbao and they both really exceeded my expectations! I didn't know this before but apparently Princess Dumpling is the sister branch of Rosemead's Prince Dumpling (which I often go to). I've tried beef noodle soups from many places and this one is seriously one of the best because of how beefy the broth is. It contains just the right amount of sweetness and savoriness. I can tell they used a lot of spices (like star anise) to make it very savory. I added a bunch of black vinegar and chili oil. One suggestion I have would be to maybe try to get rid of the beefy flavor from the beef slices, but it was still good! The xiaolongbaos were my favorite part because of how juicy they are. I got the pork kurobuta one and this type of pork doesn't have a strong porky smell which suits my tastes. I like how the cabbage inside adds crunchiness while the skin is soft and chewy. I dipped them in ginger, black vinegar, and chili oil. The service here is good too. The waiters were very courteous and friendly. The manager even visited our table and checked on us from time to time which is very thoughtful. She was so sweet and even thanked us by giving us a tumbler! They're in soft opening right now so not many dishes on the menu are available yet, but I'm really looking forward to bring the rest of my family here after grand opening.
