This place was definitely sub par taco places. It has a chipotle type of feel on picking tacos. The steak was extremely grease and not tasty. The tacos were very bland and the meat seemed unseasoned. This is strictly a place for drunk food cravings because it's not worth trying sober. read more

This business has done a great job during these COVID times by blocking off certain to maintain the 6ft distance for dine in. The staff are very friendly and the food is delicious! Ordered the Steak Bowl with cheese and no cheese, a chicken quesadilla, and the horchata! The Steak in the Bowls was amazing, so flavorful and juicy! With the combination of the rice, shredded lettuce, tomatoes pieces, and rice as the main base, every bite was delicious! The red and green sauces were also super yummy, nice and refreshing kick to each bite. The Chicken in the quesadilla was also very flavorful and juicy! It looked to be dark meat. The mix of cheese was a nice touch. The tortilla itself is a very big round, so the quesadilla itself can be a whole meal or shared! The Horchata was perfectly sweet, delicious, and refreshing! For the quality of meat and options + the price I'd stick to chipotle. The steak is extremely greasy and cut up wayyy too small. Chicken here is fatty and also cut up into tiny pieces. Had a late night craving for Mexican while visiting Chicago last weekend. Was glad to see this place open late. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite hit the spot like I was hoping for. Got a steak burrito, the steak was pretty burnt. Queso wasn't great, chips were pretty unsalted and flavorless. Personally would not order again. read more

Unfortunately Big Wig Tacos is not that great. We were initially confused if were in the right place because it's called Big Wig Tacos but outside the shop, it says Stubborn Tacos. Once inside, their pop dispenser said Stubborn pops but there was a mural on the upper wall with Big Wig on it. Slight identity crisis going on here. It was so incredibly cold inside, we had to move seats twice to try to get away from the big A/C but were still freezing. The chairs are odd, they are movable but a really heavy metal, I had to use all my force to move them as they scrapped along the floor. There is a super awesome mural with their branding but it's towards the ceiling so in the age of instagramming, this wasn't the best decision. Overall, I thought the dining room not well planned out. Plus when I went to the bathroom, I found it was right in front of an opened door kitchen with tons of vegetables and lettuce just sitting on the counter. Something grossed me out about seeing the ingredients for people's food right before & after peeing and not being monitored. So back to the experience, we walked in and it took several minutes for someone to come from the back to take our order. Their menu is pretty straight forward so we ordered some tacos, chips & salsa and a quesadilla. The chips & salsa comes with the same salsa found on table. We ate a few but tossed most. The quesadilla was pretty good, but holy grease explosion. I could not get passed the fact that it was swimming in oil. I used 20 napkins to try to sop up some of the excess oil but I still felt kind of gross eating it, especially when it left my hands completely oily. Ugh. With so many taco places in the city, this simply isn't one I'll be back to. Too many odd things that don't add up, but mostly...all that oil! read more

Big Wig is tough to review: Do I compare it to Velvet Taco, La Pasadita, Cescas, or Indio 2? If you're hungry and on foot in the area, you'll try this regardless of my opinion. But I'll type it anyway. I respectfully disagree with reviewers who think this is a good value. This is tourist pricing (I get your biz model, just sayin). Aside from Velvet Taco, most tacos of comparable quality cost maybe a third of Big Wig. Velvet Taco has tourist pricing too, but their tacos are novel and such flavors-- not "authentic" but cheffed-up. At Cescas on Clark St. you can get stellar authentic tacos on Tuesday nights for a buck. Big Wig serves a respectable carne asada taco--I enjoyed eating them. But afterward... my lips and tongue dried up from excessive salt. I kept thinking of that Spongebob episode where he dried up in Sandy's house and she had to turn the hose on him. I'm very mature, I just happened to be channel surfing. I am a jillion times more mature than you are if you judge me for being familiar with Spongebob. Frankendoodle! Ha! Raw red onion and cilantro are a fresh balance to the juicy steak. The grill man gets 5 stars--that guy was hustling as the lunch crowd trickled in. This reminded me of La Pasadita. Service good, bathroom clean (air dryers not brown paper towels), only one trash can. Beverages were Pepsi--no longer by Stubborn. This was not a bad experience, and I would probably eat here again if I were in the area and somebody else was paying. read more

I ordered through UberEats, and was very detailed about my order! I put down no mushrooms because of an allergy problem. Boom what was in my quesadillas mushrooms. The veggies were burnt(how do you burn veggies) Sent an email, called (no answer no way to speak with anyone) how can you miss a big note like that? Outside of the allergy issue, I was missing pops and sour cream. They already charge $2 a soda and $1 a cup of sour cream. They usually on point and I guess this night they didn't care. I'm very confused. When I ordered in March, the queso was white and amazing... tonight... neither ... and orange? Also.... I ordered a plain chicken taco for a VERY picky eater and they put allllllll the toppings on.... Also ordered 2 chips and queso and got one bag of chips... Order delivery from here recently, and it was less good than I remembered. Prices have skyrocketed (quesadillas are now $10-$11 if you include a protein). Burritos are massive, but also in the teens. Their nachos are top notch, but again, expensive on delivery for what you get. Quesadilla was soggy. Nachos were good, but cheese was mostly on bottom. Live in the area and been going to this spot regularly for two years. Unfortunately, the older gentleman who regularly works the counter surreptitiously tapped a 10% tip percentage on a to go order as he was flipping the POS monitor over to me for my signature. I did not intend to tip a to go order, and I was shocked he tried to tip himself without me noticing. I'm disappointed, and consider what he did attempted theft. You can rarely go wrong with Mexican food, and Big Wig is a spot where you can *never* go wrong. I was in River North recently late one night and was looking for something hearty to eat, and noticed the bright, welcoming lights from Big Wig's sign. The time was approximately 9:30pm on a weeknight, and there were a few other people inside, but no line to order food. I treated myself to a large horchata and nachos with steak. They made sure to lay on the sour cream, too, which is my favorite part of a taco or nachos, so that was an extra-special touch that specifically made me full of joy. I really appreciate that this spot is open late, especially in this area that doesn't have many casual eating options that stay open after 9 or so. I'm consistently in this area during weird times, so it's pleasant to know I can come back frequently and know I won't be disappointed! read more

The skirt steak is plain & has very little taste. I had to ask for extra hot sauce. The chorizo ground beef was salty AF & too much oily. The chicken taco was just as plane as the skirt steak taco, nothing remarkable. The margarita taste like it was "mix" straight out the grocery store. Most of the time, I would return for the service alone when it's 5 stars but the food just will not let me come back. The service was very polite and quick, however. Great job team. read more

I ordered through Postmates and was extremely disappointed. I understand that the food can be not as hot because I ordered for delivery but here's why I will never order from them again: First, they messed up our order! My girlfriend ordered a steak quesadilla with jalapeños, cheese, and sour cream but only got acheese and jalapeños in it. We opened the quesadilla because the food was too cold and the cheese was not even melted!! The only thing that my girlfriend ate from the quesadilla was the jalapeños. Second, the steak burrito was cold too. I took two bites realized that something was off. I looked inside the burrito and the cheese was not even melted. What bothers me the most about this whole situation is that I paid $30 for a crappy burrito, an even crappier quesadilla, and an average horchata. Postmates may give me a little bit of my money back, but it will not nearly compensate me for the garbage that was sent to me. It really bothers me that a restaurant would allow their cooks to knowingly send below quality food out to paying customers. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Their food is terrible and the employees/management are even worse. There's no one to speak to for a refund if you have a bad experience like I did so beware. Came here around 2AM on a Friday and ordered a chorizo quesadilla and a barbacoa bowl. The barbacoa bowl had meat that was not fully cooked through, liquid pooling around the rest of the bowl's items, and was one soggy, smelly, disgusting puddle of raw meat, rice and cheese. The chorizo quesadilla was not cut into pieces but rather given to us as 1 huge piece. When I asked for a plastic knife, I was handed a DIRTY POCKET KNIFE. Why would any food establishment give me an employee's personal, used up pocket knife to cut my food instead of plasticware? I went back to the cooks and asked them to cut my quesadilla. They cut it into minuscule pieces, and when I turned my back to walk back to my table, they all laughed. Must be real funny to put my health at risk by giving me a dirty, used pocket knife to cut my food when you should have cut it yourself to begin with right? When I asked for a refund for this horrible experience, of course there was no manager around or in sight and I was told to call in. When you call in, there is no human you can speak to. The lady working the register (named Marianna) intentionally told me to call knowing I would not be able to reach anyone. I found out later that the manager (Jose Juan Planscencia, or JJP) was there the whole time. He finally emailed me back saying he'd look into it but I never heard back from him again, after 3-4 follow up attempts from my end. Just don't come here. The inside had some sketchy folks in the late hours so I told her I'd run inside to pick up the food. She sent me the screen grabs from her phone and I presented my card with our RARE UNIQUE last name to circumvent that + screen grabs. Guy was cold and re iterated the policy. I mentioned it was Late, she's in the car, and I have all the info present. He told me to go get her card. No. She didn't need to get cat called or ogled at by the people in there. She sent me pictures of her card while the cashier was just passive aggressive with his body language and gestures. He gave me the food and just reiterated policy with Sass and said he needs the physical card next time. Dismissing my transparency, information, pictures, and patience with him. There is a lack of taco and burrito places in River North. Big Wig Tacos is like an oasis in a Mexican food dessert. There are many things I love about Big Wig Tacos. First, the staff is very nice. From the moment I entered the restaurant, everyone was nice and welcoming. Also, the service was fast. I got my food very quickly. Second, the food was great. When I visited Big Wig Tacos in River North I ordered a steak burrito and a side of chips and gac. The steak burrito was quite large. It was stuff with a lot of good stuff. Unlike a lot of larger chains, this burrito had a more authentic feel. Also, the steak itself is was juicy and tasty. The rest of the filling were fresh and complimented the steak. Love their steak tacos. This was my first time coming into the restaurant...usually I order online and get delivery. Though there were 10 or so people in the establishment, the food was prepared rather quickly. Also, there is something to be said about being able to watch as your food is prepared. I also see why the delivery is usually never on time....because for every in person order there are 5 delivery orders to be picked up. I wont complain about delivery being 8 minutes late again.
