Biga on the Banks absolutely delivered a five-star experience from start to finish. When we first walked in, the restaurant was completely empty aside from my dining companions, but as the evening went on, the place steadily filled up -- and by the end of the night it was buzzing with energy. It was clear we were in the right spot. The curtains were drawn when we arrived, creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Then, after the sun set over the Bexar County Courthouse, the curtains were opened and we were treated to a beautiful view of the River Walk. The timing couldn't have been more perfect -- it completely elevated the evening. Service was outstanding. Toryn was our server, and his approach was relaxed, friendly, and professional. He checked in periodically without ever being intrusive, and our water glasses were refilled constantly without us having to ask. The entire front-of-house team worked seamlessly together and made us feel genuinely taken care of. We also were given a lovely bread service. And the food -- absolutely delicious. The starters were phenomenal and set the tone for the meal. The meats were cooked perfectly -- flavorful, tender, and beautifully executed. Every course felt thoughtful and well-prepared. From the atmosphere to the service to the food, Biga on the Banks exceeded expectations. What an amazing upscale meal we had here. A group of six had a really nice business dinner with a great staff and memorable food. There was a special wirh partridge and antelope that several people got and it was delicious. Others had the fish and were quite pleased with it. Our waiter brought us a couple of the more popular sides, our favorite was the Korean Cauliflower. The old fashioned was good, the food was great, the bread is amazing and made fresh in house, so that's a must. The warm chocolate whiskey cake was awesome too. The server was friendly and attentive. Visited San Antonio for the weekend from Houston. We made a same day reservation for dinner on a Friday night, no problem. Service was great, attentive, informative.. no issues! We had our two 9 year olds with us & discovered that they were doing a summer promo where kids eat free, that was a lovely bonus! The kids also got a little goodie bag which had a fidget spinner in it & that was helpful to entertain the kids while we waited for our food. Do not go if you want good food. The manager was super understanding with every complaint I had however the food is another story. I got the jerk scallops, the cheese plate, and I did their three course dinner option with Romaine hearts, seared mahi mahi, and the biga plate for dessert. I am not a picky person and I usually like a lot of the food even if it's not the best but the only thing that was good was the jerk scallops and I'm pretty sure they were a touch undercooked, but the taste was good. cheese plate was to be as expected, but wasn't a huge fan. Romaine hearts were very oily. The seared mahi-mahi was bland and tasteless. No seasoning whatsoever in the curry or sauce that was paired with it. Taste it like they mixed it with too much water by the time I got to dessert I had a headache and was ready to go, asked for my dessert to go, and the crème brûlée was all over the container like it was just thrown inside. I wouldn't say Biga is super pricey, but it definitely wasn't worth the price for any of the food. I'm not sure how they have all those awards. There was barely anyone in for dinner service and we got there at 7 o'clock. We were the biggest table and the only people that stayed for three hours. Service was OK. The servers were extremely nice but lack professionalism. I had four forks that were dirty and other people in my party had dirty utensils as well. read more

I was super excited to go to restaurant week here, but was kind of disappointed for the price and rave that this restaurant is known for. I got the tomato basil soup to start, which was creamy and tasty, but the bowl was very narrow so there was not much of it. For the main, I got the sauteed fish with sesame noodles. Nothing really that special with this dish to be honest. For the dessert, I got the strawberry cake/tiramasu, which also was nothing special. HOnestly, my favorite thing was the french 75 I ordered as it was refreshing and with the perfect amount of sweetness. The waiter was kind, as were the hostesses. The ambiance is very classy and elegant, but I just don't think the food lived up to the expectations. I've been to Biga on the Banks previously, both times for private events. What I remember about the first time was how exceptional the food was. I have to say the food wasn't as good this time, but the service was so exceptional. Our server did everything he could try to accommodate all the needs of our group and believe me it's not easy. We had a lovely room with a sidewalk balcony. Unfortunately it was freezing cold but nonetheless perfect setting. They put bacon in the potatoes so my husband and daughter could only barely eat the crispy shrimp because they sat atop the potatoes. Since we are non-meat eaters, Pescatarians, this made fully enjoying the food impossible! I just happened to switch mine up and got the vegetarian & crispy shrimp option so I didn't have to deal with the bacon issue; however, the meal contained a variety of mushrooms some of which were soggy. I'd try the food again if we sat down and got it made to order. The wait staff on the boat were exceptional! They were pleasant and very attentive since it was an all you can drink cruise! Our meal fiasco wasn't their fault as they informed the restaurant of our dietary restrictions! We very much enjoyed our experience at Biga on the Banks! It's a cute little place with great service, and every dish was presented beautifully and was delicious! They apparently change the menu daily, so many of our dishes might not always be available, but we loved what was offered. I'd probably say the chicken-fried oysters on squid ink pasta was my favorite dish, with the chilled melon cucumber soup a close second! My wife was crazy about the foie gras! Overall, it's a very good value, and we loved that a number of mains offered a 1/2 portion option which enabled us to try more of their creations! came here for dinner for restaurant week. honestly not too impressed. i got the lamb entree, but it was not that much meat tbh. felt like they skimped out on the lamb despite it being more expensive than the other entree options. the empanadas were okay, not much flavor. the recess dessert was good though. lots of strong peanut butter flavor. we sat inside and the ambiance was good. everything was clean and presented perfectly. the service is okay. it did take a while to get our food and put in our orders when it wasn't that busy since we came early in the evening. one good thing is that there is basically free validated parking in a garage across the street. read more

Celebrated 1 year with the love of my life here yesterday. We were not disappointed at all. The service was excellent and the food to match. We thoroughly enjoyed the decor and perfect lighting. They really set the stage for a great evening meal. The cornbread tasted awesome. My only critique would be for them to serve it warm instead of cold. The Peking Duck was also delicious. Came here on Labor Day weekend with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. Service was great - aesthetics and lighting in restaurant were nice. Menu options strong. We ordered drinks, starters, entrees, and desserts. The cornbread was my favorite app. My husband had Antelope and Quail and he loved it. I had a wagyu burger which is in the starter menu but an entree portion and it came with fries also good. My friends ordered from the prix fixe menu - Mexican corn soup, sirloin tips, and a couple different desserts. Our drinks were strong and good and we never had any empty glass. So we've lived in the San Antonio area for 24 years and I'd never heard of this place. I was looking for a nice place to go for our anniversary dinner that we hadn't eaten at and this place came up so I made reservations. When we arrived the hostess wished us 'happy anniversary' and we were taken to a table that had a screen so we had a 'private' table - nice touch! Our server, Abby, was too notch! She was personable and friendly and her recommendations were spot on. The menu at this place changes regularly (I think nightly). There are lots of options to choose from with a variety of 'traditional' and very unconventional appetizers, salads, soups, entrees and desserts. We started with the three bread basket (buttermilk cornbread; Pain au Levain; and Focaccia) which came with whipped butter. All were very good and the fact that they were the 'least favorite' food we had says a lot. We also tried the Bibb Radicchi Game Packet which was an amazing flavors meat in a lettuce and cabbage leaf with veggies and cashews and Asian sauces. My wife was not wanting them - until they arrived and the presentation alone made them appealing, but we each had one and they were phenomenal. My biggest dilemma was that I loved the flavor without sauce - but the two different sauces were superb - sauce or no sauce? I tried it all three ways! Loved it. We both had the Roasted Tomato Soup with spicy Parmesan croutons. Again, the presentation was top notch and the flavor was amazing. We had them add just a bit of pepper on the top and it was perfect! For our entrees - I had the 11-spiced South Texas Antelope and Lockhart Quail which came with a goat cheese tart, Brussels leaves, cranberry orange chutney and juniper sauce. I can't describe the flavors - they were very different and perfectly paired. I am not a Brussels sprout fan, so I figured I'd try them, not like them and leave them on the plate - but I found myself wanting more when they were gone! The cheese tart was like nothing I've had before and it was delicious. The Antelope and the quail were perfect in the sauce. An entree I wouldn't have considered but for Abby's recommendation - and I was very glad I ordered it! My wife had the Slow Cooked Beef Angus Denver which was served with peppers and onion corn pudding and spiced grilled zucchini. I tried some of each and again - the flavors were perfect. The beef just melted in my mouth. I could have ordered that entree and also would have been pleased! For dessert we tried the Dreamsicle Crème Brûlée, which was perfectly caramelized and the flavor was spot on Dreamsicle! Very good. We also tried the Sticky Toffee Pudding which had a very unique but great flavor. The sauce was a maple flavor sauce. The pudding was a mix of chocolate and date flavors - almost impossible to accurately describe - but it was great. The only 'negative' about the place was that a group of 10-12 businessmen were seated not too far away and they must have thought they were in a local bar watching their favorite sports team because they were extremely loud. But, that's not something that can really be controlled and probably isn't the 'norm' We will ABSOLUTELY go back!! read more

We ordered the bread basket for appetizers. The breads other than the corn bread didn't stand out to me. I got a ginger lime mocktail which was fantastic! For entrees, I got the Thai red snapper and my friend got the antelope and quail dish. I liked my dish, the quinoa and the red curry sauce blended well. I also tasted the quail which I did not like to be honest. For desserts, we got the cheese board and the biga sampler. Cheese board was pretty good and so was the dessert sampler. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent followed by the chocolate pots mousse. The only disappointment was berry crumble. The service was top notch. Such a nice place on the Riverwalk for my first dining experience in San Antonio. Huge place inside with lots of seating. Surprising for a Saturday night it wasn't really busy. But we caught the really cold windy weekend which might be why. They have a fab cocktail list and lots of wine and beer. We had the chocolate in manhattan which was nice and spirit forward. Loved it. My friends loved the margarita and the apricot tart martini. We had the bread service which had a variety of breads and butters. Nice and fresh. They have so much variety on their menu it's hard to pick . They have a world fusion kinda theme I just went with the chickpea tomato stew and added chicken. It was nice and the broth had good flavor. Chicken cooked well. Nice lighter dish. My friends had the 3 course pre fixe dinner. I tried the cauliflower soup which my friend had and it was amazingly good. So rich and neat presentation. The beet salad, scallop and salmon were all really good and I especially loved the fried oysters. Was nice to try a bite of all the things they had. The sticky toffee pudding dessert was by far the best thing I ate! Yum ! The dessert trio was also a nice sampler of three top deserts. The. Was deciding on a dinner place and ended up at Biga. Nabbed a 5pm Saturday slot on Tock, got seated by the window overlooking part of the Riverwalk. Nice view. Side note: Did you know river boat storage is in the harbor underneath the building? As for our friendly waitstaff, he seemed to have waged many a war against fiery flame and hot iron according to his scorched hand burns. He explained to us that the menu has two sections, a la carte and a 3-course price fix. We opted for the 3-course meal. Waters were always promptly refilled, so there was never a no need to fear dehydration. Utensils and plates were replaced for each course. Tabletops, however, were not cleaned between courses. Our waiter ignited the candle wick with a lighter. Yes, the food is delicious. Yes, the food is good, but let me explain. It's their sauces and dressings which bring on the flavor. Course 1: Mixed Greens. Very sour green apples, raw red onions, grape tomatoes cut in half. By themselves, not super impressive. A slice of Brie. Ok, sure, and walnuts. And mixed greens, maybe from one of those grocery store boxes, who knows? But, those greens are lightly coated with something wonderful. What can produce such a buttery sensation in a salad? Sure, I had read the menu, but not that closely. I surmised it was a vinaigrette, for sure. But it was very light, very slight, not super sour, nor oily. Yet it produced an amazing buttery mouth feel. Menu-less, I could only fathom what it might be. How, exactly, is this vanilla bean balsamic vinaigrette made and balanced to accomplish such a sensational texture on the leaves, without any of the harshness from the vinegar? Roasted Tomato Soup. Thin red threads, vibrant green leaves hidden beneath, crouton glaciers atop. A reasonable bowl of soup, but all the other dishes were certainly more impressively flavored. It did contain Parmesan croutons and basil pesto, although the red threads are still a mystery. Saffron? Strips of tomato skin? Red pepper? Or something else? Course 2: Salmon. Crispy surface, thick, just-cooked interior. Few fried garlic slices, lemon wedge, sprouts for greens on top, small dabs of green mystery dots, pickled cauliflower and carrot, fried onions, pickled peppers, crispy rice block, pool of translucent amber liquid. An impressively crispy rice block, with bouncy rice within. Wonderful with the amber liquid. The salmon, too, combined excellently with everything on the plate. Deliciously savory amber liquid referred to as charred orange nuoc cham. Is fish sauce a component? Possibly, but not necessarily. What is its composition, and how can the flavor be reproduced at home? The green dots? Avocado dots. Lamb Rack. Reminiscent of lamb atop mashed potatoes with a slice of butter, and gravy on the side. Except it's lamb atop savory cheesy grits with a slice of marinaded feta, and mushroom veal reduction on the side. Green crust. Tasty parts, tasty whole. Tender, not chewy, nor any malodorous lipids. Interesting green crust: minced up mustard leaves somehow fried to get a crumbly texture. Course 3: Chocolate Zucchini Cake: Almost pillowy texture. Vanilla ice cream, chocolate shavings, and a chocolate cigarette rolled so finely. Chocolate sauce. Blackberry orange compote. Take a bite and grin as you go back for more. Biga Sampler: Set of three. Starting with the warm apple pie spiced crumble from in the middle. Whipped cream on top, and underneath you what amounted to what tasted like nut cups from childhood. Dig deeper to get to juicy dehydrated spiced apples. Yum. Next, the triangular fudge ganache? Fudge, nutty, with raspberry sauce. Finally, save best for last, with the delectable sticky toffee pudding. Eruption of lingering toffee flavor with every bite, the dessert which will draw you back for more. read more

Amazing food! All of the flavors were so different, but melded and tasted amazing. Jose took terrific care of us. He made great suggestions and explained the food as we went along. We started with the bibb radicchio game packets and the shrimp and grits. The game packets were out of this world! Once again, the flavors! I can't even express properly. They had a rich flavor and were only handed by the sauces they are served with. Jose explained the sauces and suggested how we might like to use them. We also had the jerk shrimp and grits. I don't even like grits and I liked these! We shared the antelope and quail. Again, AMAZING!!! We were not sure the best way to have the antelope prepared, but again, Jose to the rescue! Medium rare, and boy was he on point with that rec. The a telope and the sauce it was in were perfect. The quail had an amazing smoky flavor. It is the best quail I've ever had. It was our anniversary so they put us in a quiet romantic corner with a curtain. At the end of dinner Jose brought us a berry crumble to celebrate. We ubered to avoid downtown traffic and finding parking. There really isn't a sign outside, but the chef was outside greeting people inside the building. It was a cold evening and the Roasted Carrot & White Bean soup came into my eye! Hubby wanted to go straight to the grilled tenderloin entree with extra fries. The Roasted Carrot & White Bean soup was the best carrot soup I've had so far! Not too sweet, savory and I wanted more! For my entree I had the Angus ribeye with the pinot noir horseradish sauce. The sauce was surprisingly delicious and gave a hint of Salisbury wine sauce flair. Both entrees were cooked perfectly and we enjoyed our meals. I was disappointed because I absolutely love oysters but they should never be fried. The squid ink noodles underneath were so pointless.
