Our first visit to Outlaw Kitchen absolutely lived up to the hype--and then some. The experience as a whole was fantastic: warm, attentive service, a beautifully restored house, and food that invites you to slow down and enjoy every bite. We started with the beet and dill salmon on crostini, which was such a fun and memorable dish. Piling everything on yourself made it interactive, almost playful, and you could make each bite as beautiful as you wanted. The flavors were bright, fresh, and perfectly balanced. We ordered all of the entrées--choucroute, hanger steak, and sweet pea risotto--and every single one was delicious. That said, the risotto completely stole the show for me. Creamy and rich without being heavy, it was packed with mushrooms, sweet peas, and delicate pea shoots. The salty, umami depth from the cheese paired beautifully with little bursts of sweetness from the peas--it was honestly exceptional. Outlaw Kitchen is the kind of place where everything works together: the food, the service, and the space. It feels intentional, personal, and special without ever being pretentious. Reservations are required. If you want to sit inside, you need to specifically ask to be seated inside at the counter. The service was good. Everything was well timed, except when we were trying to get the check. All the staff seemed to be kind and professional. The patio is lovely, but I imagine it can be uncomfortable in the summer heat. Now for the food. Overall it was good. I found some components spectacular, but felt like some lacked seasoning. I was looking forward to the arancini the most. The croquet itself was crunchy and that cheese was definitely telefono style, but needed some seasoning. The pomodoro was tasty, but the basil made it fabulous. Y'all know how I feel about basil. The ravioli was filled with spinach, mushroom, and ricotta with a brown butter sage sauce. It was delicious and the portion was perfect. My favorite part though was the crunchy shitaki "bacon"and butternut squash. I would take a bowl of that in a heartbeat and would absolutely go back for a butternut squash main dish. It was perfectly roasted and full of flavor and those shitaki were amazing. The preserved lemon vinaigrette over lettuces was phenomenal. Incredible fresh flavor. Desert was chocolate torte and sour cream ice cream. The ice cream was the absolute star of the show. We visited Outlaw Kitchen again and, as always, loved that they switch up the menu weekly. This time we started with the arancini, absolutely superb. About five perfectly crisp rice balls filled with melted mozzarella, fresh peas, and tender cut-off-the-stalk corn. For our entrée, we ordered the chicken-fried steak made with Angus beef. It was cooked perfectly: crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The gravy could have been a touch thicker, but it was still very good. The green beans with mushrooms were outstanding; you could truly taste how fresh they were. We also loved the buttermilk biscuit and the mashed potatoes. I accidentally blurred the photo, so I'm bummed I can't show the food! We took the chocolate cake home, one we've had before and know is delicious. My wife and I went for my birthday not too long ago and I was a bit apprehensive since I've had about 5 years of bad birthday dinner experience. Outlaw broke that streak and gave me a very special birthday. The food was all great but the service was even better. Our bartender/server Natalie treated us like we were longtime friends or family members. Chef was great as well, always checking in on us and making sure we were having a good time. I don't personally eat dessert or any sugar so it was awesome to see the staff not giving up and finding a creative solutions to make sure I got something special with a candle for my birthday. My wife and I left happy, having had a good dinner and feeling like we made new friends. Not to mention it was much cheaper than those overrated steakhouses where they do not care about you. The steak and pasta were enjoyed at the table. The goat cheese , cheese cake with blueberries was delicious. The waiter was just okay as was the salmon entree. I opted the salmon without the puff pastry. The fish had absolutely no flavor.. The green beans and leeks accompanied were delicious. When the waiter asked if I was going to eat the rest of my fish I said I was underwhelmed. He thanked me and said he told the kitchen and they threw it all out it....really? This was an odd comment to make as I'm sure they didn't throw it all out they just put it in a puff pastry for someone else. Had they seasoned the fish it may have been much better. . I had asked for a recommendation on a red blend and the waiter just handed over the drink menu without recommendation, not helpful or seemingly not knowledgeable about wine. Came in for dinner. As others have mentioned the indoor dining is limited, so a reservation is a must. The food was fresh, clean, and very well executed. Each of the three courses was timed perfectly and we never felt rushed throughout the meal. Service was also spot-on, leaving us feeling well taken care of while not being hovered over. The food is good, but it's not extraordinary for the prices they charge. The service is great, and so is the ambiance. The inside seating area is VERY limited, so expect to sit outside. You might be able to snag seating inside if you make reservations a couple of weeks ahead of time, but be prepared to be in a loud and crowded environment if you sit inside. They have a nice outside patio with fans and misters, so it's kinda comfortable - even in August. They're good, but not that good. Save this place for restaurant week when you can get a good deal. Enjoying a fine meal at Outlaw Kitchens is like a treasure hunt: the menu changes often, but has limited choices, so you want to check ahead and go on a day when they are offering something you like. Also, the best possible experience is dining on the patio in good weather, but this is Texas so the weather is variable. The patio has a misting system to cool things down, and the patio faces east so it's shady in the evening. Ordering the prix fixe menu gets you an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. They offer a vegetarian entree, too. You can choose a set of alcoholic drink pairings or just get soda or water. The food has a farm-to-table feel: fresh ingredients, well prepared, with just enough sauces, seasonings, etc. The staff treat you like you are a neighbor stopping by. The restaurant is located in a historic residential neighborhood, and many of the clients are locals. It's casual with a bit of an old money feel. First off, the building (a former home) was a delight, with careful details paid to retain the original feel of the architecture. The service can not be faulted, with just enough check-backs but no hovering. We had the pre fixe: the starter was a seafood ravioli that just melted in your mouth. I had the quail, which was new to me, over risotto. While I'm not typically a fan of risotto, I really enjoyed the addition of peas and mushrooms, but the sauce was tops. My husband had chicken fried steak, which seems standard fare but it was anything but that. We both had the banana cream pie, which was almost as good as mom's, but the crust was a bit chewy. They only serve beer and wine, but also some wine cocktails, which I sampled and enjoyed. It was a memorable birthday meal, and we won't wait for a special occasion to return. read more

The pre-fixe menu was trustworthy and every single bite unbelievably delicious and mouth watery - my palette having been refined in Houston and New Orleans and everywhere in between. Wow!!! It's rare that I'm blown away by a restaurant, but this was superb. I think this meal was my favorite dining experience of the year so far. I've been meaning to try Outlaw Kitchens for a while but never got around to it. I decided to check the menu for today online and it sounded right up my alley, so we made a reservation and showed up for dinner. From the moment we walked in, the service was outstanding. We were seated right away and the menu was immediately explained to us. We wanted to try everything on the menu, so we ordered two 3-course prix fixe meals and tried each entree and dessert. The crab cake appetizer was delicious, deep fried and generously stuffed with crab meat. The two entrees were beautifully done as well. My husband ordered the cacio e pepe and I ordered the steak chimichurri. The steak was cooked perfectly and accompanied by broccoli and twice baked potato-- both great. The cacio e pepe surprised us both, though. It was bursting with flavor thanks to the tomato "meatball" and basil purée. I could eat three plates of that pasta alone. The dessert of course was amazing as well. Perfect crème brûlée and a sinfully rich chocolate torte. All in all, a wonderful and unique experience. The restaurant is owned and operated by a couple that actively work in the restaurant, and you can tell that love is put into the food and service. We can't wait to return. read more

To get to the restaurant, we had to travel through a very seedy neighborhood. Outlaw Kitchens seems to be on the outskirts of an area that some are attempting gentrification but needs a few years to make it. They only do a prexfixe (no menu, just one appetizer, two mains, and two deserts). The app was shrimp and crab ravioli. There were four (not so big) ravioli on each plate. My wife liked them, but I thought they were too fishy. My wife and I both decided on the quail. Two quail were nestled on a bed of risotto. The quail was outstanding! The texture, the flavor.. yes. The risotto had good flavor, but it was CRUNCHY! For desert, my wife decided on the apple walnut cobbler. I ordered the chocolate almond torte. We shared these. I preferred the torte. My wife liked both equally. We also had cocktails. My wife had the lillet blanc rose, and I had the contratto. My wife didn't care much for hers. My drink tasted like flavored mineral water until I got about halfway down. After that, it tasted much better. In the end, we got the check. This place has been on my list for a while now, so when our friend chose to have her birthday dinner here, we were excited. Then, when we saw what was on the menu for the evening - cream of mushroom soup and lamb - we were ecstatic. Since we arrived a bit early, we were seated at the outside bar, which was nicely lit and inviting. Unfortunately, they do not serve liquor, but my friends enjoyed their wine cocktails. I had their IPA, which was good. We did not wait long before being seated at our table in the very back of the restaurant, next to the bar and kitchen. This inside is quaint and charming with a family feel, which was nice. Everyone was friendly, and service was good, but standard, not next level. Onto the food...complimentary bread is not offered. The soup was good with 3 different types of mushrooms, but the criminis were my partner's and my favorite. Finally, onto the main course, the rack of lamb, which sadly, did not impress. We love lamb and have had it at several top-tier restaurants, but this was not it. It was luke warm at best and had a sauce on top, no mint jelly. The carrots and spinach were good, and the potatoes were delicious. Our friends had the pasta, which they all equally enjoyed. We chose the coconut cream pie, which my friend and son raved about. I wish I had tried it. We came here because we saw it was top 100 on Yelp in Texas and my wife and I have been going to the 7 places who made the list in San Antonio. This was the 6th one we've made it to thus far and it was terrific. Out of the 6, it probably had the best tasting food. And I really mean that. The ingredients were so so fresh and tasty and it was cooked to perfection. The appetizer, entree and dessert were all excellent. This is a home that was converted into a restaurant and the ambiance was beautiful. It's run by a retired chef and his wife and they are wonderful and are doing a terrific job. It's only open 3 days a week and for dinner only. Each week there's a new menu. They typically make it based on the season. I highly recommend this place. I had seen the recently published list of top 100 restaurants in Texas by Yelp and was curious about Outlaw Kitchens. Thankfully, when I called yesterday, they had a table for 2 outdoors for us. The home converted into the restaurant was charmingly done and the patio area was very welcoming. As we sat trying to decide what to eat and drink, I felt that the patio area was designed with the customers' comfort in mind - ceiling fans and misting sprays. There was not one fly at the table and the mist was definitely cooling. It felt like we were neighbors invited to come and have a meal. I had the Contratto Cocktail while my husband had the Lillet Sparkler. Outlaw Kitchens is open only Thursdays through Saturdays for dinner. The menu changes weekly and is published on their website. We chose the prix fixe but you can also order a la carte. We both had the Charcuterie and the Parsley Crusted Seared Corvina with gulf shrimp chowder which was perfectly cooked. I could only eat about half of my corvina which my husband happily at the rest. For dessert, my husband had the Lemon Pound Cake with blueberry coulis and sour cream ice cream and I had the Flourless Chocolate Cake with sour cream ice cream. The food was delicious but for the price I expected it to be more elaborate.
