We hired a contractor in April 2025 to do a full home remodel on a two story home down to studs. It was a nightmare up until September 2026 when I fired them. Part of the nightmare is we realized the contractor had ONE guy who put in the roof by himself in a over a week. The same guy did the plumbing and the same guy did our tile. When we took on the project ourselves and finally started to see the scope of everything that was done wrong and we got to speak to the inspectors. The inspectors let us know that the contractor continuously failed inspections but the contractor didn't tell us that. It We realize how messed up the situation was. I'm 36 weeks pregnant now, exhausted, discouraged, and angry. We hired Maciel Roofing to redo a roof that is less than a year old and was suppose to be "complete". Double paying for something is obviously a kick in the gut but it was necessary. The inspector was leaving today while I was arriving to the house. He actually waited for me to get out the car so he can let me know that this company is one of the most well-known and respected companies across inspectors in Hayward. He knows that things have been sucking lately, but he said hopefully that could give me peace of mind and it truly did. After what we've been through I don't know who I can trust anymore so hearing that just made this all worth it for me. I'll come back to let you all know how it ended up. However, the evidence does not support this conclusion. Our roof consists of two levels, and we observed rust on several spots across five long panels--many of which are not adjacent to the solar installation. Furthermore, the upper level of the roof, which has no solar panels whatsoever, also exhibits couple similar rust spots. These observations strongly suggest that the rust is not caused by the solar installation but rather stems from a material or manufacturing defect. Despite these panels carrying a 50-year life warranty, the roofer was quick to claim that the rust is not covered under the manufacturer's warranty. This is deeply disappointing, particularly given the clear evidence that the damage extends well beyond any area impacted by the solar work. The roofer demonstrated no willingness to help address the issue and offered no solution for the roof leak currently occurring at the lower level. The lack of accountability and absence of any proposed remediation is unacceptable given the scope of the defects observed.

From the detailed proposal to final touch-ups with painting, I could tell how much they cared about doing a thorough and quality job. Not only was the perimeter of our house very clean (cleaner than before they started), they also helped clean up the debris that ended up in our garage because of the exposed ceiling which I truly appreciate. Lastly, I did not know this at first, but my neighbor saw a crew member tighten the hinges on our gate (very old) because they noticed it was uneven when they used it to access the side of the house. Typical sales scare tactics were used like telling us a leak was from condensation due to the lack of ridge vents. We have gable vents and so does every other house on the block. By his logic, every old house without ridge vents should be leaking water. I've been in my attic, there's no condensation issue. Their price for a new roof seems fair but given our roof is 12-15 years old with two leaks, it's far from needing a full replacement. They also offered no warranty if we went with a repair. He also estimated my roof to be 25 years old when my home inspection and other roofers estimated 10-15 years old.

Full credit to Rodrigo and Lincon, who were on top of things throughout the project. First, they patiently explained the full roofing process to me in detail when I was getting estimates. This was not my experience with some of the other roofing companies who felt rushed or were asking me to cut corners. In contrast, ELM gave me several alternatives before we zeroed on to a torchdown roof. Next, Rodrigo and Lincon were very communicative on our group chat and kept me apprised of the progress throughout, including tons of photos. Rodrigo was also very proactive in dealing with the city for permits as well as clarifications etc, which happened several times since our city is one of the stricter ones. During all this, we had a running clock since we were in contract to sell the house, but Rodrigo and company kept things in motion, sometimes working late hours to ensure completion on time, which we did with several days to spare. It was also very nice of them to talk to my buyers to tell them about the new roof in detail. I was also pleasantly surprised with their integrity.
