BigSpoon is a Korean restaurant on Alum Rock's/East Side's White and McKee, an area I don't go to that often. The reason why I came over here fairly recently was because I visited cousins and cousin in law that live near to give them Valkyries shirts and other shirts they'll send to the Philippines in over a month, and since they plan to be sending clothes over while telling me about the place, I gave them my Kate Martin and Kaitlyn Chen jerseys for the trouble as I needed to make room for my Veronica Burton jersey, which I wore when I met up with them, and my upcoming violet Gabby Williams one. (Go Valks!) The noteworthy parts the place has are the real good amount of banchan dishes, bibimbap and the short rib, the spicy one in particular. While I probably will not visit the place again anytime soon, at least I can keep this place in mind if I want Korean food without driving to Santa Clara. There's plenty of parking behind the spot. As you come in, the place looks simple, but it works. You have the adorable ajumma/ajumni to take your order. The stuff I ordered. I had water, banana milk and kimchi fried rice. Since I was the only one that had more than 1 drink, I told my cousins and cousin in law the banana milk, and they did bring up how on occasion, you see the drink in K-dramas. Of course, we laughed on how my parents never got into K-dramas and while I'm at it, Filipino dramas. Oh well. Oh, there's no doubt the food is good, and the place is too legit (to quit) as I did hear Korean from a different table. As I typed up, there are plenty of banchan dishes. Not Los Angeles amount of banchan dishes, but there are plenty of banchan dishes never the less. The kimchi fried rice dish may be simple, but it does give off that homey feel. Can't forget how Big actually is affordable, the big reason why my cousins and cousin in law like the place so much. The reason why the place doesn't get a perfect score. The place would have received a perfect score if, the major matter I remember here, the place has mul naengmyun (my favorite Korean dish). Originally, I wanted Japanese ramen before my cousins mentioned this place, and I was ready to pivot to having mul naengmyun, but I was told that the place doesn't carry the noodle dish. (Being a very good and logical dish to eat for at the very least half of the year in a city like here San Jose is the reason why of all of the Korean dishes, I like mul naengmyun the most.) There probably is one or two minor flaws I already forgot, but the lack of mul naengmyun is the dead on reason why I don't give the place a perfect score. On a side note, it's nice that I told the group what banana milk and mul naengmyun are, and by doing so, they learn something new regarding eating at Korean spots just in case. BigSpoon is a good spot. While it may not be as iconic as the places in Santa Clara, it is a good spot never the less. It does a good job at being a Korean spot for an area that is more so known for Mexican food. They have a special lunch combo on the weekday where you can choose your choice of a sizzling plate of protein and tofu soup (protein of choice) for only $19.99 however certain proteins do have an up charge fee. Hands down our favorite Korean restaurant! Been coming here since they opened up a few years back. Omma (the owner) knows us by now and so is our son. She always takes her time to make rice balls for our son and even interact with us. She also made sure we're taken care of every single time. The ambiance is very homey. Final Thoughts: 4.54/5 This place seems to be another one of the hole-in-the-wall Korean spots in San Jose area. Perhaps that's why their group of customers usually looks smaller than other spots. My friends and I have been here multiple times now and we've honestly been satisfied with all our experiences. Looks to be a very homey and comforting spot for Korean food. Food: Spicy Braised Short Rib with Cheese and Noodles: 4.7/5 We get this item every single time. It's a good alternative for Daeho. Portion size is smaller to match the pricing. For the flavor, the sauce is what makes it for me. Typically, we add cheese and noodles to it. All of the ingredients soak in the flavor and work so well together. The sauce has a nice balance of umami, spicy, and sweetness. Personal preference with the sweetness. This might lean on being overly sweet for other people, but personally, that is something I'm a fan of. For the braised meat, it is super tender and the flavor is also nicely marinaded into the meat. That combined with the cheese, sauce, and veggies tastes amazing. It includes a variety of vegetables, which I personally enjoy because it gives another component to the dish. I do get tired if I am just consistently eating meat, so I enjoy the vegetables. Texture wise, the vegetables are quite nice. Some of them are more soft, but that's perhaps from continuing to cook in the sauce. Otherwise, other ones like the carrot or broccoli have a nice bite to it. Something else that I enjoy is that they provide purple multigrain rice. The purple rice is always my personal preference and I appreciate the places that do provide this as an option. Sweet Potato & Cheese Katsu: 4.5/5 Today was actually the first time we tried this dish. It's a pork cutlet with mashed sweet potato and mozzarella. The texture of the katsu is amazing. This type of breading is really only something I see in my Korean cooking videos where they use a fluffy panko breading and double coat the meat. The result is this super crispy and airy textured coating. The meat was very tender on the inside and it didn't feel as oily like some other katsu pieces that I've tried. For the flavor, they season the meat very well. They do drizzle katsu sauce on top just to give some of that additional flavor. Something I like to do with this is dip the katsu into the braised short rib sauce. The combination is chef's kiss. Banchan (side dishes): They have a nice array of side dishes and I love the variety. Some items include kimchi, fish cakes, broccoli, seaweed salad, sweet potato, etc. The flavorings and seasonings for each one are all to my liking here. --------- Quality: Hasn't changed We have been here multiple times and their quality is very consistent, which I appreciate. Their meats are consistently tender, sauce is delightful, and they don't skimp on their portion sizes. Price: Leans on the expensive side, but worth it Depending on the item, it can be quite expensive. The price range for their food items will be from $18 to $48. Definitely the large price range, but, it's going to depend on what you get. For something like the braised short ribs, it's going to cost more since this is an item that you can share and do family style with versus an item like the sweet potato & cheese katsu, which is more of an individual plate portion. Food is great! I've been here twice, and I've gotten a number of items: tofu soup, beef short ribs, ginseng chicken soup, sweet potato and cheese katsu, and tendon soup. I really like the ginseng chicken soup here! I've been trying to find a place in South Bay that serves it well, and I think this might be the closest spot yet. It's very homey, full of protein (chicken) and carb (porridge). Their katsu is also great portion, I would opt for the cheese only style next time. Service can be a bit slow due to staff shortage, but there's only usually 1-2 workers, so better to be patient. Price for the food is great in my opinion! Will definitely return. read more

We were lucky to find a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant to park so I'm not sure if there's any parking lot behind the place or nearby because there doesn't seem to be much space anywhere to otherwise. The kimchi pancake is the best I've had so far with the texture and taste. A lot of places are either too doughy or dry but this one actually has the same texture as a sweet pancake but just salty and spicy from the kimchi. It comes with a dipping sauce that's fairly sweet and salty with daikon slices in it. The sweet potato cheese tonkatsu is such an interesting dish! It comes with finely shredded cabbage with some kind of thousand island dressing. Everything else was delicious too. Bibimbap comes with purple rice. read more

Fantastic little Korean shop, it has the staples and a great bonchon spread. We were delighted! The portions are pretty sizeable too; the bibimbop ended up being something we took back, as was the plate of bbq pork. The bon chon, rice, seafood pancake, seollangtang were all fantastic. read more

Wasn't the biggest fan of this place and I frequent a lot of Korean restaurants. Their chicken wings had such a sticky texture and it kept getting stuck to my teeth and it felt like glue at one point. It was all breading and barely any chicken. It was also quit dry. We love supporting local business, especially ran by mom and pop. Bigspoon is a small hole in the wall but all their dishes are delicious though it takes time for items to come out. Of course we gotta sip on soju and snack on bonchon while waiting for the food. Spacious spot, easy parking, and yummy food, win win in my opinion read more

My fiance and I came for lunch and I was pleasantly surprised by this place! The server was really attentive, even after the place got busy. We did two of the tofu soup lunch specials which was an awesome deal in my opinion. We both had beef tofu soup, pork belly, and short rib (extra $4) The portions were generous. The food was just so delicious! The short rib was tender and juicy. I don't normally care for tofu soup in general but I really enjoyed this tofu soup! Very filling lunch for less than $50 for 2! I definitely want to come back to try more of the menu! read more

I did not want to cook one weeknight. I went on Yelp, and this place seemed decent, with an overall rating of four and a half stars. When we arrived, there were dirty plates on each table. Dang, how messy! Then I felt uncomfortable and skeptical about my choice of venue for dinner. But the server sat the four of us, and I was curious. We started with the Korean side dishes/appetizers. I've never had so many. I liked most of them, especially the potatoes and the triangle-shaped ones. We ordered a Short Rib Beef Stone Bowl, Spicy Pork Stone Bowl, Kimchi Fried Rice with Beef, and a Katsu dish with cheese. Everyone enjoyed their dish! Mine was great, the ribs were sweet and juicy. I just wished there were more than 6 pieces! The egg was perfectly cooked and I love the little crunch from the rice. Now I know why this place is highly rated! The service was good, despite that only one woman was taking the order and serving the dishes. She was the only one who had to clear the tables. I wondered if she cooked, too. Oh man, give this woman a hand!!! Somebody. help her out! She is a superwoman!!! She should be at home being served while she sat on the couch. Instead, she's working herself to the bone!
