Q-Pot, San Jose - A revisit was in order, especially for a friend's birthday lunch. We came with a party of 7, which is just about perfect since Q-Pot can combine two BBQ tables so everyone can still eat together. I'm a couple weeks late but here's the breakdown: Food (4+ stars) + The weekday lunch deal is $25 per person for both hot pot and BBQ. Really appreciate establishments that provide great value and good food! + Garlic shrimp was excellent--flavorful, and grilling it ourselves made it even more fun. Pro tip - no more than 4 minutes on a hot grill! (4.5 stars) + Those thinly sliced hot pot meats, when grilled, are super good and they go really well with your custom sauces. I actually like this better than the bbq meats. (4 stars) + Their sauce bar is always one of my favorite as they actually have actual shacha and not a vat of oil. Pro tip for sauce: Lots of garlic, lots of shacha, chili oil, green onions, cilantro, tiny bit of ginger and a teaspoon of sugar. (4 stars) ~ Kalbi and bulgogi were decent--nothing top-tier, but good for the price. (3.5 stars) ~ Banchan are fillers at an AYCE but I appreciate the effort. Nothing really stands out here. Service/Ambiance (3.5 stars) + Trendy look even though it's been here for years. It's never a long wait even when there's people in front. ~ Service is standard; you order via kiosk. With our big party and lots of dishes, a couple items were missed--seems common if you order a ton! But overall, it's consistent and efficient. If you're expecting premium Wagyu, you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for a fun lunch with friends where everyone leaves full for $25, Q-Pot is still one of the better values in San Jose. read more

Came here for my brother's birthday party and I have to say I am extremely disappointed. This is my first time having Korean barbecue in San Jose. The grills got burned astoundingly fast, and the servers are very young, tending to run away after one request and do not stay long to service their tables for long at all. The self serve ice cream is extremely freezer burnt. The meat quality is very chewy and very fatty, and the corn cheese is thrown onto the grill by the servers in a tinfoil ball. The overhead vents do not work, tons of smoke was blowing in our faces, and the servers weren't attentive to see it and change our grills. I used their hand sanitizer dispenser, and it made my hands sticky. My hands weren't sticky to begin with... We sat at the booth and they are not anchored down, so when someone moves, the whole booth moves too. The food was mixed. The steak was pretty good and I enjoyed it, but the small pieces of beef were extremely tough and almost impossible to chew. They seemed like very low-quality cuts, and I honestly couldn't enjoy them at all. The prices also felt quite high for this type of restaurant, especially considering that you cook the food yourself. The place didn't feel particularly clean either -- I noticed dust on the curtains. Another major issue was the ventilation at our table. It did not seem to be working properly. After we finished cooking and removed the food, residue on the grill continued to burn and created a very strong, unpleasant smell. No one came over to check the grill, turn it off, or replace the cooking plate. The smoke and smell became so uncomfortable that we finished our meal quickly and decided to leave. Once we got into the car, we realized just how bad it was -- my wife, my child, and I all smelled strongly of cooked food. Our clothes and hair had completely absorbed the smell. Service was disappointing as well. During our meal, staff only checked on us a couple of times. When we were ready to pay, one employee walked away, another came over, seemed to notice us but also left, and we had to wait until a third person finally came to the register. What surprised me most was the tipping screen starting at 18%. For a self-cooking restaurant where the staff mainly brings the ingredients to the table, that felt excessive, especially considering the level of service we received. We celebrated Gavin finishing middle school with high honors that Tuesday evening. It was his choice to do Korean BBQ but it was Tess that wanted hot pot, so we did both - though Gavin and I did not care for the hot pot. You order from the screen which is nice, but folks sitting away from the electronic device cannot see what is being offered. A little bit of an inconvenience, but once you place your order, the food comes out in less than 5 minutes. We had to have the grill changed twice, but our server tending to us were quick, patient, and thorough. Our iced waters were refilled constantly. The meats, especially the beef bulgogi were tender! Not super close to Fanime, but this used to be a go to tradition post con to finally fill up after not having a full meal during the entirety of the Memorial Day weekend. With that in mind, it does get quite packed here during the times that we did go, so make sure to hop on a waitlist so you can just arrive and be seated immediately. It's a very lively and busy restaurant with lots of lights hanging from the ceiling, pop music blasting (at least during our visit) and staff and people walking to and fro all over to get to the sauce and salad bar. Sometimes it gets so busy it's hard to flag down a server as well. Combination hot pot and BBQ isn't a novel concept, at least not in SoCal, so this wasn't anything too foreign to me. Order from the tablet with a cool down time, and the server brings out your meats and other cookable items. Meat and seafood quality are decent and the veggies are fresh. I can't say that it's on equal footing as the Chubby Cattle empire now that that has taken over SoCal, but I can say it's a decent contender against other smaller equivalent, non-franchise restaurants. With the self serve style, some of the sauce stations and buffet areas can become disgustingly sticky and messy and with how busy it is, it might be some time before a staff member gets by and cleans everything up. Lots of AI slop everywhere and misspellings, but the meats, soup bases, and sides and appetizers are the standard fare that you can find at an equivalent shabu shabu or BBQ place. I'll start by saying that the servers and staff were all excellent, very responsive and friendly. The main reason for the 1 star is the overall hygiene of this place, especially the musty smell that was hanging in the air and seemed to also be in the broth of the hotpot I ordered, which also had a strange taste. Something about the smell of the broth made me think it wasn't just my personal preference for food that made me not like it, it was an actual musty-ness and chlorine smell. I'm thinking maybe the broth was old and reheated? Or maybe it's been boiling all day and they just added some water to it? It's really hard to describe, but I'll just say I've had a lot of different hotpot like Japanese shabu and haidilao and boiling point and really liked it, and I also really like Korean soups, but I've never had this weird musty funky smell. To be honest I couldn't continue eating after trying to sip the broth 4 times--and I tried 4 different flavors of broth. Even the miso broth, which usually just taste like miso and water with a bit of onion, had this weird funky smell, and all the broths had a similar weird undertone. There were some other hygiene issues. I noticed that the surface of the dishes had some smudges such as the picture I provided where the hotpot bowl has some dried rice stuck to it, the dried rice was there before it came to our table. It seemed like maybe they were hand washing the dishes or not doing a thorough job. Usually restaurants like this need some kind of high heat industrial washer, and maybe they aren't using that? I noticed the surface of my spoon just had a funky detergent smell similar to the broth. The sauce bar was mostly okay, however there was a really tacky looking setup where there was some soy sauce and other sauces in 1 gallon glass drink dispensers, I think the sauce was coming out too fast which caused it to look all splattered in sauce and not very cleanly looking. Also the sauce dishes were being held in a plastic dish tub which looked a bit unclean. I also noticed something going on at the entrance of the kitchen. One of the workers installed a heavy duty fan to blow air out of the kitchen and into the restaurant. I don't know why this would need to be done. If you need to dry something you usually use a mop or a squigee. So maybe it was some funky smell in the kitchen? What caused that smell? It could also be that they were going to close soon and this is just their normal end of day procedure, but there were still a lot of people eating, so why would they blow smelly air into the restaurant while people are eating? read more

I definitely had high expectations for Q-pot, but it was honestly disappointing. The service was not good for a slow Wednesday night. I just felt like we were bothering them asking for things. We just got the kbbq. I really liked the sides and I felt like they had more to offer than other kbbq places. It was also nice that we got to order on the iPad at the table. We went to Qpot for my husband's birthday yesterday and he got 50% off his meal! When you walk into Qpot there is an iPad to add yourself to the list and you get a text when your table is ready. I had a massive craving for Korean BBQ which absolutely hit the spot. We ordered pretty much everything off the menu, and every single thing was delicious. Let's talk about the Sauce Bar, this is my favorite part! I love being able to head to the bar and mix up my own "special sauce." Unlimited Everything! Aside from the alcohol of course, everything is unlimited. It's the perfect place to go when you're starving and want to try a bit of everything and the price was decent. The staff here is amazing. They were constantly checking up on us, making sure we had what we needed, and they changed our grill frequently without us even having to ask. It makes the whole experience so much smoother. Thank goodness I was with my sister and my girlfriend because they did all the heavy lifting with the cooking! The two of us came here for BBQ and hotpot, but halfway through our meal--after we had placed our initial order--the power went out. A staff member came over to ask if we wanted to order anything else; otherwise, we had to pay by cash or card, as they couldn't accept Apple Pay due to the outage. My friend and I asked if we could get a discount since we hadn't actually managed to eat anything. The staff member checked with the manager, who offered a mere $4 off our $75 bill. We weren't satisfied with that, so the staff member spoke to the manager again and told us the price would be reduced to $65. He didn't apologize, nor did he offer any discount or incentive for a future visit. The staff member wasn't at fault; I was simply unhappy with how the manager handled the situation. I feel like in San Jose, there's the big three (in terms of popularity): Goku, Gen, and Q-Pot, and that's how I would rank them: 1. Goku 2. Gen 3. Q-pot, with Q-Pot being the worst (not saying any of those 3 is the best KBBQ in San Jose, definitely not, don't attack me please) Service was great. Went for a late Monday lunch and the servers were attentive and food came out fast. Ambiance is nice with upbeat music playing (though it wasn't censored, which doesn't matter to me but if you don't want your kids to hear cursing then that's something to note I suppose) The actual food itself was not great. Japchae was okay, not amazing. Beef bulgogi was solid but also did not blow me away. Sal Chi Sal was somewhat chewy, but not bad. Definitely needed the sauce. What really confused me was the Chadol. The first round was what I expected. Thinly sliced, good amount of marbling, nice and tender. The subsequent rounds were slightly brown in certain parts of the meat and didn't have as good marbling and were much chewier after being cooked. My friend and I even thought we may have received the wrong order. But after a few more rounds of ordering the chadol and still being brown and chewy, I hypothesized that it was freezer burn and it was just really old meat. Now, the meat being frozen is far from surprising and I am aware that many other kbbq restaurants freeze the meat too, but to freeze and hold onto the meat until it gets freezer burnt and is chewy is not a good look. I have had other kbbq restaurants not even defrost their brisket and serve it still frozen and it still looks and tastes better than what I had Unfortunately, due to the lack of quality of the food at a price of ~$27 after tax per person for lunch (if I'm remembering right), I have to give Q-Pot a 3/10. While I didn't explore the full menu, I feel like you need to have a good brisket as a baseline, and they failed to do that. I like that they do not skimp on ingredients, have a generous sauce bar and don't have unnecessary rules that prevent you from having a good time. I love the QR ordering system. What I'd REALLY love for them to work on is cleanliness and hygiene. I have visited them more than 5 times now and the hygience scene has only deteriorated. Dirty I pads, food stains all around, hot pot remote controls just unclean and hanging off the tables. On my last visit, one of the temperature remote controls was just hanging off from the table exposing the velcro and the strong velcro ruined my sequined top. Also, sometimes their tom yum soup flavor can be really watered down. So I order another one from the I pad and mix in some more ingredients. Make some strong tom yum broth you guys!! My family and I used to come here all the time a few years ago when Q-Pot first opened. It was great! Fun environment, service was good. We recently went last Sunday and the service wasn't great. We had to wave down our server every single time we needed something. The place looks filthy! The bathrooms are gross! We didn't end up trying the hot pot because it costs extra on top of the BBQ, and here's the kicker--if even one person in your party chooses hot pot, everyone at the table gets charged for it. That policy alone was enough to turn us off. The menu felt really subpar with very limited side dish options, and not much variety overall. Definitely not what we were expecting for the price point. On top of that, ordering was a hassle--they use a tablet system that kept freezing and glitching, which slowed everything down and made the whole process frustrating instead of fun. Food tastes ok. Q-Pot was just okay. It doesn't really feel like Korean food. I know what Korean BBQ is supposed to taste like, and this didn't quite hit the mark. The side dishes were very basic and didn't look especially fresh. They were pre set on trays near the front desk, and when customers walked in, a tray was handed out. The meat was also just okay. They do offer a good variety of dipping sauces, and the staff were friendly. Overall, it felt expensive for what it was. I don't think I'd go back. read more

Came to visit San Jose and came here because of the good reviews. Our server asked us if this was our first time here. We said yes. He quickly explained the process. Then when we tried to order our tablet screen froze. We were looking to flag down someone, anyone but no one was available. We sat waiting until we finally saw our server. Idk what we did but he said we did it wrong. We were like uhm. Ok. Placed our first order of hot pot based. Then we decided we actually want drinks not just water so we tried to order that. Our tablet froze again. Looked around. No waiter in sight to flag down for help (again). Finally our server saw us and tried to help. Stated, "you can't order drinks from the tablet, you have to order it through me" Ok and how were we suppose to know that when we told you it was our first time here???? It was just an overall not the best experience. Food was just ok. I love appetizers and here, I feel like the main focus was the hot pot. I told my group that they forgot to bring the spring rolls I ordered off the tablet and was reminded, "remember that was when the tablet crashed and we have to put it in again, you forgot to put the order in a second time".
