He replaced the front brake with really cheap, low-quality parts. When I caught him trying to replace the rear brake with a used part, I told him to reassemble the brake; I would take it to another shop. He then tried to charge me $110 for one brake when the original quote was for both brakes. I insisted he replace the front brake with the original parts when some guy walked in claiming to be the manager; he got in my face, literally inches away, starting screaming at me to get the f--- out or he'd mess me up. Liberty used to a great neighborhood shop, but the new owners are a total rip-off. I wound up bringing the bike to NYC Bike & Scooter, where they replaced the brake pads for $40 and the bike's as good as new ! Avoid Liberty like the plague !!

The forecast was for rain from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm so when I arrived, I asked the guy at the front desk if we could change our ride for one of the tours later in the day. They run tours at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. He responded and said that it was going to rain all day. I told him that was not the forecast and that it was supposed to be clear in the afternoon. He said that weathermen could not be trusted and he did not change our schedule. Shortly after the ride started, it rained heavily and the temperature was 39 degrees Fahrenheit. We were dressed for rain but didn't have gloves and between the cold and the wet, it was very rough. Within 20 minutes, one of my 14 year old sons was freezing and crying like I had never seen him cry. We had to leave the tour. When I got back to the bike shop, I asked if I was going to be given a refund. The same guy said immediately "No, you didn't ask to change the schedule." I was astonished. The first thing he said was that I didn't ask to change the schedule when he knew that was the first thing I asked. He had no problem looking me straight in the eye and lying. We don't get to New York often as we live in California. This guy really ruined our day and who knows when we will get back there. The wheel on my bike popped off 2x, the axel was bent. I lt was about a 10 minute walk from the rental place and it took them 45 minutes to come to me and bring me a replacement bike. It ruined our excursion so I asked for a refund due to the bike breaking 2x and the 45 minute wait. The guy at the rental stand said that I was lying about the bike breaking! And asked why my hands were not dirty if I tried to fix it!! Imagine that the bike breaks 2 x then totally ruined the experience and then instead of apologizing they accuse you of being a liar!!! You can't make this stuff up. They would not give any refund at all. These people basically did not provide the service and took my money. However, I was a bit distracted by how often he consulted his phone for accuracy, and he did take a short call during the tour. I appreciated his creative use of music to help us imagine the park's history -- it was a unique touch -- though I personally didn't want to stand still quite so long for that portion. He had also planned to show us historic photos, but unfortunately, the tablet provided by the company had a dead battery, which reflected more on the company's preparation than on Aaron himself. On the positive side, we were lucky to get a VIP-style experience since we were the only two participants on the tour. Aaron was thoughtful and kind -- he even brought and offered us a poncho since it was raining. He also went out of his way to guide us on how to use the subway afterward so we could reach our next appointment on time, and he eagerly pointed out great photo spots and offered to take pictures for everyone. Overall, I'm glad I took this tour. Aaron clearly cared about our experience and made it memorable despite a few minor hiccups. FYI: this tour does not include Strawberry Fields or the Alice in Wonderland statue.

I had previously tried getting a bike from the Specialized store on the UWS and while they were friendly, their service times left a lot to be desired. Same goes for Hilltop in Williamsburg (also owned by Specialized) - those guys treated me like I was a sale/noob and really couldn't have cared less about figuring out what was "right" for me given I wasn't going to be buying a bike from them. Nice guys, but once again - backed up for weeks on the service side of things. Back to Bicycle Habitat - Matt and the team were awesome. Took their time with me after a build and helped me get sorted with both shoes and clips - adjusted my bike a bit and really made sure I got some practice clipping in/out and that I was all set to go before walking out the door. All in all spent over an hour in the shop both chatting with the guys and getting set up with the new bike. I will 100000% be bringing any and all future bike needs to the shop and will be making it known to friends/fellow bikers that this is the place to go.
