UPDATE: FIVE STARS! I dropped my bike off (finally) last Friday. Curt said he probably wouldn't be able to get too much done until earlier the next week. Sure enough on Tuesday I got a call saying the bike was fixed and I could come in and pick it up. I went in on Thursday and picked it up. No problem he said, just replaced the rear derailleur hang...thingamajig. He also pointed out that the frame is a tiny bit out of alignment and I could go to a Trek dealer to get it fixed/replaced using their warranty if I wanted to (even wrote down a shop that he recommended I go to should I want to do this). Curt also said it probably wasn't necessary as this slight misalignment in the frame can be accounted for elsewhere on the bike. Either way, the clicking is gone with an absolute minimum of snobbery, hassle and cost. (Curt only charged $25 total! Labor and parts! WHAT?!) In Conclusion: go here. The place is a little hard to find, but totally worth it. I could not be happier I made the choice to get my repair done at Bikefix. Original review: Three stars for now. I've had a Trek road bike with a clicking sound since I got it two years ago. Today while trying to switch from 1st to 2nd on the front crank, I managed to derail it 3 times. I'm pretty sure this is due to rider error and I'm expecting I'll need to get a few parts replaced, but I didn't want to go into my old shop (Oak Park Cyclery) because I've had issues with service quality. Called up Curt and explained the problem, he said no problem but the soonest he could see me was Wednesday (today's a Monday). Very helpful and he didn't get snooty with me, he just said it was a common problem and it might not be as bad as I think. I'm looking forward to getting my bike repaired here and I'm hoping Curt can vanquish the incessant clicking noise at last. Expect an update after service is complete. read more

Where I live, we are fortunate to have a lot of bike shops. However, what we have in quantity we can lack in quality. Then there's Bike Fix. Calling this place a bike shop is a bit of a mis-nomer. Sure, you can buy a bike, some parts, etc, but service is what make Curt's place stands out. Any sort of problem on any sort of bike he can get squared away for you. His prices are about average, however when you account for the very high level of service and professionalism then I think it's a real bargain. What you won't get there is a "snobby" bike shop attitude. None of the judgement that you are not bringing in a TourDeFrance caliber bike, but just a bike. He's found a niche that I think is terribly underserved in the industry. Just a no non-sense approach to getting your bike back up and running. He's fixed everything from my very old road bike to building my latest fantastic machine to hand built bulletproof wheels to getting my darn MTB to finally shift properly. Well worth bringing your bike in. Whether its that old Schwinn you've dusted off or that brand new high end bike, it doesn't matter. read more

I just bought a bike nearly a month ago, after more than 25 years without one, and Bikefix is a shop I had heard good things about for years. I have been there three or four times and each time, I have been served promptly and helpfully by Bill. He shares from his wealth of knowledge, doesn't push for the sale, and has a great sense of humor. During my visits, I have bought a helmet, a bell and an air pump/pressure gauge, and all have been fairly priced, especially for a specialty shop where gleaning from the staff's expertise is priceless. I moved to Oak Park in the spring and needed a new bike and bike shop. I reviewed the local bike shops on Yelp. Bikefix had a number of good reviews, but I primarily chose Bikefix because I liked how the owner, Curt, responded and took ownership of the negative reviews too. When I went to Bikefix I thought I knew what I wanted, but I barely qualify to call myself a novice biker. (I don't know my sprockets from my shimanos.) Curt and the team obviously know their stuff, and they asked some basic questions about my riding habits and goals, and walked me through the best options for my needs. They walked me through all the typical maintenance activities, how to disassemble for transport, and how to make some standard adjustments. I went in a couple of weeks ago for something simple. Now I might not be a bike snob, or ride in a club 100 miles a week and maybe what I wanted to buy wasn't worth Bill's time, but as soon as I opened my mouth he made it obvious he had no interest in helping me. I asked about a phone holder for my bike. The reason I needed it was that I left my bike computer out of state and wanted something to track my rides until it was mailed back to me. But he cut me off as soon as he heard phone holder so he didn't hear the reason i needed it. I was cut off by Bill and told "we don't sell those" and rolled his eyes. And then he said "when I see someone riding with one I do this" and literally rolled his eyes again. I know I was looking for $20 accessory but come on man. He said we direct everyone to buy a Garmin (not looking to spend $300 for something I'm going to use for 2 weeks). When I asked him to tell me about the Garmin's he took me to where they were and pulled two out of the case and said these are all dummies and walked away. I went there last year, Curt was great, helped me out and made a quick fix for me. Unfortunately he isn't talking to everyone. The sad part is that I would have spent another $400-$500 on rims and tires yesterday. I did spend that money, but at another shop. And next year I'm planning on buying at least one new bike...somewhere else. read more

Background Story: I'm nood to these uppper level bikes. I've been getting out of shape, I've stabilized myself at a newish decent paying job (that involves a lot of desk work), and I've always wanted a super cool fully loaded mountain bike. I found an unbelievable deal on a Mongoose Otero Super paying only a couple hundred for it (usually go for well over half a grand). One day me and my friend get into a quarrel and I punch him in the kindey. He decides to stumble around and fall on top of my bike; bending the wheel, bad. Situation: I'm looking on the internet for options. These upper level wheels are crazy expensive. So I see that I can maybe get the wheel trued. I go here to yelp to see who to go to, and the stores closest to me (OP Cyclery and Dan's Bike Shop) don't appear to come off too fantastic. Apparently a lot of bike shop guys are "snobby". I figure I'll call up Dan's bike shop, they're open, and they're a block down. What they need to know is, on the phone, tone is everything. The vibe he was giving, the attitude, and the price (high!); no thanks. I understand what some people were saying about the snobbyness. Review: I called up Bikefix (somewhat random hours, but GOOD none the less), and Curt answered. Very nice, courteous, and helpful. He told me to bring it in and he'd take a look at it. Shop wasn't too hard to find, I passed it first time but only cause I was busy looking for parking. The second I walked in I was attended too. I told him the situation and he had my wheel on the fixture in minutes. He explained everything to me. No snobyness, no attitude; just a lot of patience for a bike noob. My wheel was too far gone. He gave me affordable options but also suggestions on better options that were a much better value. He wasn't hesitant to explain the details. I opted for a slight upgrade. The prices were... well, high to me, but I don't know what a good price is for this stuff (again, noob). He called me when the parts came in and when they would be done. I came in and everything was ready to go. There's not a doubt in my mind that this will be the only bike place I go to from now on. Fantastic service. I can't say enough good things. read more

I send my son over there on his bike unaccompanied to get it tuned up, buy parts and accessories, ask questions, whatever, and they treat him with respect and treat him as a valued customer. And because they are the greatest, when my son didn't have enough money on him one day, they still sent him home with his purchase, but just told him to come back the next day with the rest that he owed. I am a new cyclist, and my bike wheels have been rubbing against the brakes. We took it into Bikefix, and they fixed it up as good as new the same day! I thought that maybe I would need new reinforced wheels as I am out of shape, but they said there wouldn't be a point to replacing them until we had to. I appreciate their honesty because I totally would have paid for them right there. They did a checkup on the bike as they said the rims looked good, and the wheels were just off center. I had fenders put on as well. I was prepared for a snotty attitude as I had experienced at other places, but they put me at ease. They weren't condescending, and in fact they were very encouraging about just getting out there to ride. First and foremost, this is a great shop because it is fairly priced and the owner is a genuinely decent person. If you need a bike shop in the area, go here and you will be treated with care and respect. My story: I was looking for my first new bike in 25 yrs and did some online research to narrow it down to a reasonably priced Fyxation Pixel. Went in, had a nice discussion with Curt and placed the order. Curt called me the next day to say that Fyxation was out of stock and would be until Sep (it's July). Not good. However, he said he would try to see what could be done. Bottom line, I just picked up my upgraded Eastside model at a good discount because Curt followed up on my behalf. Fyi, bikes aren't like cars, so I know he made very little profit, doing this to please a customer. This is the kind of local business that deserves support so that the neighborhood has great resources. Go there, have reasonable expectations, ask questions, and you will not be disappointed. read more
