We went and met Nes and Duke along with the trainer OJ. My wife and I were able to control and walk Duke with no problem. But they wouldn't allow me to adopt him because they say that my back yard has no shade, and that the gate is not secure enough. Actually the back yard has shade for about 1/2 the day once the sun if to the east,but the home inspector came by at 10:00 AM, so not much shade then. However, Duke would primarily be an indoor dog, and less than a block away is a park with all the grass and shade a dog could want. The back yard would be only for a potty area, and leg stretching area between walks. I have had my son in laws 3 Husky dogs back there and not once have they opened the gate, or broken through it, and they outweigh duke by about 2 to 1. Was I given a chance to address their concerns? Nope. That is why I am giving them 2 stars. If they have concerns, Let me address them, or at least call me and ask me about them, and then they can decide if we would be a suitable dog parents or not. Personally, I don't think that they took to my wife and me, and were looking for any reason not to let us adopt duke. (this is only my belief, and I have no proof one way or another.) And one more thing that I wasn't a fan of. The training. The trainer wants complete obedience from the dog. He thought that I was giving Duke too much affection for not doing anything. Who does that? If you love your dog, you give him affection for no other reason than he is a dog, and you want to make him feel loved. We don't just parcel out affection for only the times they do a behavior that we want from them. Overall, I am soured on rescues in general, and I will be only looking at animal shelters from this point forward. Good luck to anyone adopting from this rescue, but be prepared that they will say no without giving you a chance to explain or fix any issues.

Their adoption process made it clear that they genuinely care about finding the right match; not just for the adopter, but for the puppy as well. They took the time to consider my lifestyle, experience, and capabilities while also ensuring my puppy would be placed in the best possible home. The fact that they rescue so many dogs from high-kill shelters, combined with their incredible network of dedicated foster families, speaks volumes about their professionalism and commitment. It's obvious that everyone involved is passionate about giving these dogs the love and care they deserve. I was especially impressed by the foster who cared for my puppy. He came to me already potty pad trained, incredibly calm, affectionate, and full of confidence. It was clear he had been nurtured in a loving environment, which made the transition into my home so much easier. My family and I had been in search for a dog for quite a few months. The online search and…read morecontacting rescues was an exhausting process. We found Wags & Walks and sent in an application for a dog. The next day I received a call from Jade, an adoption coordinator. She asked what my family and I were looking for in a dog and right then I knew this was the rescue I wanted to work with. I didn't feel rushed and I could tell this rescue truly cares about all the dogs and the foster/adoption process. We set a time to visit their facility the following week and met Jade. She was so patient with me and my family while we met a few dogs and made our decision. We took our Lil Bit as a foster for a week to make sure he was the right fit for our family and while he was still taking his medication Wags & Walks was giving him for his cold. The week we were fostering I was in contact with Jade and she answered all my questions in a timely manner. We adopted a week later. Jade offered for us to take Lil Bit back so they could do one more medical check before the adoption was finalized. Jade also sat with me and went through all the adoption forms. During this entire process, I never felt rushed or forced to adopt. I was guided with kindness and patience. Also, Wags & Walks facility is super clean and organized and all the staff we met were so nice and friendly.

I know I have thanked you before for providing us with Bentley ( kennel name Red Baron) sadly last month he passed away after giving the honor of being him Mom and Dad for over 12 years. Red Baron was underweight with a hematoma on his tummy and thin wiry hair he was scared of men and rolled on his back or tried to hide when approached. Lots of love and care gave him the most beautiful thick wavy coat he filled out and we would get stopped all the time by people remarking 'what a handsome dog' ( so handsome we had DNA done he was yorkie cocker and pointer!) he never did anything wrong he came house-trained, he didn't lick or jump or beg only barked when someone was at the door and was gentle and calm, his best friend was the cat next door. I feel the need to share my dissatisfaction and poor treatment by this rescue. In the end one of…read morethe dogs I tried to adopt was harmed, in addition to me and my son because of how they mishandled everything. It was only 48 hours before getting this dog that the foster parent, not the rescue, informed me she had a prolapse rectum. The shelter didn't even know. Outside of being told she had a small cataract in her left eye, was told nothing else was wrong. In fact, the owner said she was "perfect.". This dog had dental disease, severe scarring in both ears and eyes to where she had limited vision and hearing. She was not potty trained at all. She was also severely underweight and could not handle a walk more than about four houses down my street. I agreed to take her with the understanding she would get the prolapse surgery after I got her, paid for by the shelter. The owner continued to disagree with every vet that saw her to talk about the surgery. No vet wanted to operate on her because she was malnourished and it was unclear why she was not able to gain any weight. All three vets said she should go on a hydrolyzed protein diet. The owner of the shelter refused stating the only food I could feed her was farmers dog. Finally after two months, the owner said I could put her on hydrolyzed protein food and she started gaining some weight. She had to get an ultrasound before the hospital would agree to do the surgery at that point. It took six weeks for the shelter to connect with the hospital that did the ultrasound to talk about next steps for the surgery. By that point I had had this dog for over three months and was dealing with all of the stuff I mentioned above. Because of all that at some point, I decided I could not do it anymore. It was a very painful decision to make and the shelter, made it extremely hard for me in the end. They were difficult to communicate with. I agreed to just fly her back to LA myself and the plan then changed three different times. They said they would come get her on a certain day, then changed it to another day then I said I would just bring her like I had planned then they asked me to keep her until they could find a place for her even though they said they had a place for her to go. Long story short it was extremely hard. I will put pictures of the texts from the owner in the end, who told me to literally stop complaining. The amount of time and money I spent out of my own pocket on this dog was significant. I thought at least an apology would be given, when I asked for one, the worker at the shelter stayed silent on the phone. And then the owner told me to stop complaining as you can see in the text photos. I share this to warn other people about what you might go through if you try to adopt a dog through them.

I recently decided to adopt a dog from NKLA that appeared to be very adorable and loving.  A male…read moreterrier, a dog that I thought would do well in my home with my girlfriend and our 2-year-old super-loving-bubbly-firecracker of a submissive little female pug mix.  Everything went so well during the meet and greet of our dog!  We were in love with our complete family right away! We were all SO happy, or so we thought.  On day 1 following the adoption, our new dog was very affectionate, but seemed to get irritated with our pug when playing and bared his teeth. We told our pug to leave him alone.  Over the next few days my girlfriend looked after the dogs as she works from home and everything appeared to be wonderful.  He would give us kisses, allow us to pick him up, sit on our laps, play, show affection, make us laugh, lie in bed with us.  All of the things you hope for in a fun-loving dog.  On day 2, my girlfriend went to pick him up and who we thought was a loving boy with a great personality bared his teeth and immediately bit my girlfriend on the hand, but did not break skin.  The bruise lasted for several days.  We were in shock to say the least and blamed the incident on our behavior, thinking we had done something to provoke the bite.  Moving forward to Friday of the first week together we were all sitting on the couch as a family.  The two pups started to play together when suddenly our new dog snarled at our other dog. He then lunged at my girlfriend's face snapping his jaws closed. A near miss. At that moment we were beginning to have apprehensions about our newly adopted dog.   We tried to remain optimistic.  That Saturday we visit a dog beach.  We kept our adopted dog on leash. Not to long after arriving at this dog beach this adopted dog was growling at other dogs and nearly bit a German Shepard in passing, but then redirected his aggression toward me, biting me on the elbow breaking skin and then proceeded to bite my left hand as I tried to pack up and leave the beach as this clearly was not going well.  Our vet met our adopted dog who immediately suggested we return him as he was clearly aggressive and had other behavioral issues. We decided not to give up and see how it goes.  The following weekend while working in the yard, our landlord who was visiting unlocked a gate allowing our dog to escape.  After catching up to our adopted dog who was marking flowers and watching me in calm state, allowed me to kneel down to his level without running off.  As I went to pick him up, he bit my right hand, leaving a puncture and drawing blood.   He ran off again.  As I finally was able to catch up to him once again, he remained calm once again.  But in this case I grabbed him by the collar from the back of his neck. He squirmed vigorously and let out a cry and began hissing trying with everything he had to bite me again and again.  This lasted for 20 seconds or so before he calmed down.   We decided that evening that we wanted to return our adopted animal as he was clearly aggressive.  Adorable, but highly aggressive.  The next day we ended up in the emergency vet first thing Sunday morning around 7 or 8 am, learning that he sustained a strain to his leg likely from his having run off. We contacted Addie Daddio of Love That Dog Hollywood, a coalition partner of NKLA, as our vet guided us, stating that the injury was unfortunate, but that we had made the decision to return him due to his excessive aggression before learning of any strain to his leg.   Addie became very accusatory stating that this was not the dog that she knew, that we must have done something to provoke this behavior from him, that we were just trying to get out of medical bills, that we are "pieces of garbage and she hopes karma finds us." We are loving people with good hearts.  We would have never had considered adopting an animal if we were not good-hearted people.  We wanted to do the right thing and Adopt, Not Shop.  Addie is kind when things are going well, but she like our adopted dog are both of similar behaviors and very nasty at the flip a switch.  We received several unsavory texts from Addie over the last couple days.  Addie Daddio of Love That Dog Hollywood is the most unprofessional, unsavory, and outright nasty human beings we have ever encountered and it reflects poorly on NKLA.  She called our vet with 40 years of experience and harassed him as well.  She insisted to meet him in person.  I would highly encourage NKLA to sever ties with this individual who shames good-hearted people with good intentions when a dog adoption does not work out. We feel that our pet adoption was a failure and we are broken hearted. Because of this experience with Addie Daddio, we will NEVER feel comfortable adopting from NKLA again.

Anyone who knows Addie personally, or is in contact through social media or other networking-driven platforms, gets that straight away. People who have been involved in dog rescue, even just the tiniest bit, know how big and overwhelming and never-ending it is. There are literally thousands of dogs on the street, in shelter, or in deplorable living situations in any given town or city. When the joy of a placement occurs it is beautiful but short-lived, for there are gaggles more needing healthy, loving homes. It is most often times a desperate, wallet-bleeding experience to place just one pup, and Addie has managed to create a business - and fuse it with her life - wherein she pulls animals, has them fully vetted, then takes them in personally or finds placement within her foster network. All toward the goal of final placement, which in layperson's terms means SOMEONE SAW OR MET OR FOSTERED THIS DOG AND SIMPLY HAS TO LOVE ON IT FOR THE REST OF THEIR SHARED LIVES! The most daunting part of rescue is finding a permanent home: it is an exhausting and constant effort of calls and vet visits and networking, and Addie's track record of pulling and placing is beyond stellar. I had the pleasure of welcoming one of Addie's rescues in to my home until she was reunited with her owner. I live far from Addie but she made the transition of getting Gracie to me seamless, and was in constant contact as we ensured Gracie was healthy and comfortable. I will do it again for Addie in a heartbeat if I am able, knowing so many dogs need a place to rest and recover, and that Addie will be with me every step of the way.

I came across a photo and profile of the world's cutest kitten (see photo) on petfinder.com, but you can also see them at billfoundation.org. I filled out an adoption application and spoke on the phone with the adoption coordinator as well as the foster mom. After approval, both of these women hand-delivered Marcello, driving all the way from the Valley to my Culver City pad. They gave me some food, bowls, and a few of his favorite toys. His sister came along to say goodbye to her brother! I was tempted to adopt her as well, but I couldn't at the time. It was evident that they cared for him very much. They checked up on us with a phone call a few weeks later. When I took Marcello for his first vet check up, the vet said he was incredibly clean and healthy for a former street cat (he was born on the streets!)-- no eye gook or other infections that are common with shelter or adoption agency kittens. He was quite impressed with his adoption agency. A month after his adoption the foundation contacted me to make sure I was neutering him soon. I was able to take him to their vet at no cost to me. My kitty was fixed in 90210! What a great orginazation doing great work for homeless animals! These are animals that may have otherwise been picked up by animal services and to a shelter. Having been fortunate in our dog Sammie we looked to adopt again from the shelter after she sadly passed away. My son however in his search for a dog came across one he fell in love with at the Bill Foundation. I was resistant at first to complete the application & a bit thrown by the suggested donation cost but after reading about them & getting recommendations from friends I gave in to the process. In meeting Jo & her team at the pet fair I felt reassured that this foundation was legit. The love & care these pups receive is wonderful. Although the process can be daunting & we tried desperately not to get our hopes up when we fell in love with a particular dog, luck was on our side. Abbey (previously named Leyla) became our new family member. She is amazing! Jo has made sure our family was just as important in the process as Abbey was. I highly recommend the Bill Foundation. I thank them for rescuing our girl so that we could have the opportunity to adopt her.

The owner had us jump through several rounds of hoops/interviews/aspects of the application process, only to visit our home yesterday and decide our neighborhood (note: not us, not our actual home specifically, but the neighborhood itself) wasn't appropriate for an adoption. (Worth noting - our address was included on the initial adoption form...) The owner (Jasmin) did not even have the decency to even call us to confirm we weren't accepted to adopt the dog, but instead posts a Facebook picture immediately after leaving our home, saying that the dog is available. I followed up with her via email today, and received the below in response. How does how other owners care (or don't care) for their pets have any impact at all on my abilities as a potential pet owner? No idea... "I am so sorry about yesterday. I was ready to adopt Eloise to you. It is the neighborhood that concerns me. My rescue friend adopted a dog to someone who paid a lot of money ($450) for the dog in the same neighborhood. The dog was hit by a car and dumped at North Central Shelter. My rescue friend got the dog back and had to pay a lot of medical bills as he had a broken leg. After I left, there was a chihuahua with out any collar walking down the street. I mention that the final adoption is determined on the home check as photos let me know if we should continue on. I feel that you would be great adopters, but I will not adopt to the neighborhood.." The owner Jasmin seemed more interested in interrogating my personal life asking about my relationship status/future possible marriage plans (Seriously?), rather than informing me about the puppy's needs. Not to mention she was so keen on selling her "only sold in England" products to people. I tried to hide my disgust since the other ladies were very nice. So today I decided to write a review to save some of you from disappointment. Had I read these reviews prior to sending my adoption application and attending the meet/greet I would've avoided this scam entirely! So this past Saturday Claims: 1) Want what is "best" for the puppy 2) Told that they wanted to consider all applicants thoroughly (since there were a few others). And since Jasmin's birthday was on Monday, she wouldn't review any applicants until Tuesday/Wednesday. She made that clear by saying that twice. So I felt reassured. Reality: 1) Who is willing to offer "pay" the most for this puppy? 2) Puppy was apparently adopted on Sunday. Period. I would never recommend them to anyone who is looking to adopt.

Adopter beware! I adopted a dog from PPR in 2019 and had to put him to sleep 1 month later because…read morehis mouth and jaw were filled with cancer. He had been in pain for a long time (at least 9 months, by my vet's estimate) but no one at PPR had looked in his mouth. Not surprisingly, he growled when someone tried to open his mouth, but no one at PPR took the time or effort to find out why this was.  When I asked PPR about the condition of his teeth (I was a remote adopter and I didn't meet him until I picked him up), I was told by PPR that he had recently had a teeth cleaning, which was a total and complete lie. Anyone who had opened his mouth to clean his teeth would have seen all of the growths in his mouth. Anyone doing an X-ray would have seen the huge growths in his jaw. I saw the X-rays and looked in his mouth (at my vet) and the dog's deplorable condition was obvious even to my untrained eye.  In my mind, PPR is not a reputable rescue organization. They don't care for the dogs, they just foster them and pass them along to make money. When I informed PPR of the dog's condition, and the need to euthanize the dog, the reply from PPR was "Sorry, the dogs are adopted on an as-is basis." What a horrifically unprofessional and callous response to give a recent adopter who had to put the adopted dog to sleep because PPR didn't do their job! I cannot recommend this organization. If you do adopt from them, make sure to thoroughly check out the dog, even taking it to a vet for a professional checkup. It will save you from major heartache and lots of unexpected expenses. Don't trust what they say to you unless you see the vet invoice and detailed records.

Rescue groups vary widely in how they operate, and I feel very lucky to volunteer with Pacific Pups. With their professional, well-organized venture, Kiah and Elena set a gold standard for rescue groups! At every touch point from our first email to supply drop-offs, the team has been responsible, responsive, and caring. Pacific Pups covers/provides all veterinary care and supplies for fostering, including food, crate, leash, collar, and dog bed. To become a foster, you fill out a detailed online form with your information, availability, and preferences. Kiah contacted me within 1 day of my foster volunteer application, sent info on potential dogs to foster with no pressure, and has provided regular guidance and support for my foster pup. If you need something for your pup, she works hard to get the item to you in 1-2 days, including braving LA traffic and mailing items with a quickness. Additional expenses are reimbursed with pre-approval and a receipt. The group even has volunteers who check in with foster parents. I received multiple emails from a very nice volunteer who asked about my foster pup's stay and offered help as needed. Pacific Pups' website and social media are actively maintained - their Instagram is hilarious! The group rescues a range of dogs and cats, from pit bulls that might otherwise be euthanized to street mutts to kittens to mommy dogs and their newborns. I'd highly recommend volunteering, fostering, and/or adopting with this wonderful group! Foster and save a life (it's an extraordinary, humbling, and fulfilling experience)! Adopt - don't shop!
