Jack Brown's Pirate Brother, Billy Jacks is one of the best dive bars I've been to. More rotating craft beers on tap and now with moonshine cocktails. A lot bigger than Jack Brown's so its easier to get in and eat. Great in summertime because they open up all the windows. Have not been since they started with their oyster raw bar. Their sticky nuggs are so stinkin' good! I like Thai or BBQ with bacon and cheddar. Love their mix and match slidders too. Can't go wrong with their wagyu, 50/50 combo of beef and bacon (yes they did!), crab cake, or fried chicken slidder. By far the best thing for me thought is their Brunch! Huge caraffes of mimosas or bloody mary's. They have chicken and waffles, eggs benedict with crab cakes on top, and huge burritos. First of all, I've been going here since it opened, and going to Jack Brown's before that. Usually a great atmosphere, beer and food, and generally customer service unless it's packed. I took some colleagues and my girlfriend there last Saturday night after the U of R game, and it was packed. I've worked in customer service at vineyards for years, so I know how slow it can be. However, it was almost like our bartender was trying to give us bad service. She barely checked in on us and when I accidentally spilled my second beer of the day(read: I was in no way intoxicated), she didn't refill it. After I emailed the owner about the service, something I'd never done before, I received a nasty response blaming me for all sorts of things I never did. Apparently I cursed out the bartender, was extremely intoxicated and was cut off. So yeah... first time an owner has falsely accused me of doing a litany of egregious things. After I politely explained that must have been another customer, or more likely, the bar tender lied to avoid accountability, the owner never responded. NICE JOB SIR. Anyway, if you treat customers like that, there will be a reckoning eventually. All of this would have been prevented had anyone read the first chapter of "Customer Service for Dummies." A customer can be extremely obnoxious(which I wasn't), and you still need to treat them with respect and decency. It's amazing that Aaron has not one but two successful restaurants and STILL hasn't learned of the "customer is always right" rule. read more

My boyfriend's football team played at Bridgewater College. We are are from PA, so we figured by James Madison there would be a lot of options. We just were stopped at a light saw Billy Jack's and decided to try it. BEST PLACE EVER. I will so drive 8 hours again to eat here. We started with the nugs appetizer (bbq cheddar bacon), then got sliders the piggin one was SO good. Along with the redneck nachos plus got some of the donuts. Went here last night with some old friends and found that the place just isn't what it used to be. Passing through when we got a great offer to spend the night at the Madison Hotel on JMU campus which we accepted! Browsed the local scene and saw that Billy Jack's serves fresh oysters. Read the reviews and thought it might be fun to experience a local college venue. (We're both in our young '70's) Well, it was. Loud, fun, excited, noisy, young, singing crowd on a Thursday evening. It felt great! No tables available so we decided to take two seats at the corner of the bar. They serve many craft brews which we ordered from the attentive bartender(s). Good cold beer. Wife had read about the sticky nuggs special on Thursday and I ordered my dozen raw oysters. Oysters were plump and salty and because they were small I actually was served 17 on ice with lemon and cocktail sauce! They were excellent and I learned they were from an area off Connecticut. The nuggs are a Billy Jack Thursday tradition and my wife enjoyed them. Service was friendly and quick. If our travels bring us within 5 miles of this place we will stop in and try some other menu items. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience of this fun collegiate bar and our dinner. As expected glad it was an off weekend as the place was packed at 2:00 of course our son says that all the college kids are just waking up. Too many choices on the menu and hope to get back to try a few other dishes that caught my eye. Given the crowd the service was pretty good with several of the staff checking on us. 1/2 Salad portion is huge. Only knock would be I only needed 8 napkins for for the 10 Napkin burger will have to put more in it. Great flavor and fries were pretty good as well. This place is a dive bar dream! Loved the atmosphere and the wait staff were patient and nice while we figured out our order. Our daughter loved looking at all the decor while we chattered away. The music was a little loud but not unacceptably so. Food was reasonably priced and delicious, and although the beer selection changes with every new keg was still amazing. The best thing about Billy Jack's is that they have amazing specials for great prices. I got sticky nugs tonight with chili sauce and it was only $3! I've also had the $1 oyster special as well and I was equally as impressed. Our server was attentive and friendly considering how busy it was. There is extremely limited seating here, Billy Jack's is definitely a hole in the wall place. There is constantly a crowd of people at the door waiting for a table. Unless you want to wait over an hour for a table for dinner, I would suggest getting there before 5 pm or be prepared to sit at the bar. read more

Normally love this place and never have an issue here, the food is great, but after my last visit I don't know if I see myself coming back. Myself, my boyfriend, and a friend got here and sat down at a table and ordered 3 drinks. Our waiter said he would serve my friend and I, but refused to give my boyfriend a drink. His only reasoning was that he was "too f****d up" And that's a direct quote. We had literally just arrived and I would think the 2 bouncers at the door would have said something if any of us were too intoxicated to drink. We asked the waiter what the reason was but he said he "didn't need a reason". I completely understand placing limits, but being unreasonably rude to customers (who weren't even close to "too drunk") is absurd and simply not necessary. This was our second time at Billy jacks and we were very disappointed. We tried jack Browns for the first time the other night and their burgers are much better. We went during happy hour and didn't get any happy hour discounts. We were told after we paid and tipped that they weren't doing happy hour because of the "tap takeover" with Sierra Nevada. Great place for the college budget crowd. Took the teenagers here for lunch. We were able to satisfy their appetites without blowing a ton of money. We all opted for the sliders. You can mix and match any two and it comes with fries for $7.95. I got the Greg Brady and fried chicken slider combo. The boy got the Greg Brady and the 50/50 combo. The Daddy/Daughter duo ordered the Greg Brady and pulled pork combo. We have all had the Greg Brady hamburger at the sister restaurant next door and it's a family favorite. For those not in the know it is a burger with Mac and cheese and Route 11 BBQ chips. Amazing to say the least. The pulled pork came with cole slaw on top and looked pretty good. The 50/50 burger consists of beef and bacon ground up into a party served with cheese. I'm told that it too was quite good. The fried chicken slider is served with cheese, pickle and their own special sauce. This is a much better chicken sandwich than chic-fil-a and that says a lot because I love those. We also had the sticky nugs for an appetizer. So good!! Service was great she kept our drinks filled and was there but not intrusive. Highly recommend this place to all!! read more

Great corner dive bar. Fun creative menu: chili In a Frito bag. Great fried chicken sandwich w/ fried pickles. Lots of JMU kids in for Friday lunch and drinks. What college and fall football are all about in a University town. Good bar/restaurants in immediate downtown neighborhood for switching it up a little. read more
