The food is good. The lady was super nice. We were on the stools next to the counter and she was super nice. My daughter ordered fries with no gravy. They did give us fries with gravy, but she was so quick to change it out. I was just a misunderstanding. It is clean in their small, but they have seating when you walk in in the back on the counter and then into a little room. The only thing I didn't like is when you walked out of the bathroom immediately to your left is a shelf so you can really hit your head on that so be careful. And you can only use cash. If you forget and have a card you have to go to the barbershop and it's $3.25 fee for the ATM there. read more

I stopped ordering from here due to the nasty rude lady who takes orders over the phone. She is extremely unprofessional and acts like she can't be bothered with you and doesn't need your business. The food used to be good but the last couple of times we had ordered it was mediocre at best. Decided it was not worth the hassle anymore to order and have to deal with the rudeness. I can't believe there are people that still eat there and deal with it. Must be they are friends with or related to the lady. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Although my family and I do not get the chance to eat out often, when we do we go to Billy Schu,s, Now with the pandemic we are more than happy to support this local business by ordering "food to go". They were amazing when my husband had his 60th birthday there - with preplanning and keeping it a surprise they fit in a party of 20 for breakfast - while still serving their local and loyal customers 10 out of 10 for their food and organization. It was an occassion to remember. Always polite and courteous - a treasure tucked away - and I,m happy to say never an issue or complaint to post. 5 associates and myself went in for a staff appreciation breakfast and by the time we left two of us were sick to our stomach. Not because of the food but because of the way the staff who served us acted. Mind you the server was one of the owners. We started the experience by having one of our colleagues scolded for trying to assist with pushing two tables together. Rather than saying I don't want you to get hurt she yelled and caused us all to become uncomfortable. We all made light of it after we sat down. She hurried to take our order on drinks and food and to talk about the delivery of each would take too much time, especially since I haven't got to the end of our visit when the worst service started to occur. She not only yelled at one of the supervisors for a tax exempt form, she made a scene in the restaurant complaining about the two phone numbers on the form it working and her not getting her money. The tax mind you was under 5$. She kept repeating how she doesn't ever get her money from the tax exempt sales. It was asked if the restaurant had an accountant and she announce yes and they don't we this we do all this stuff. She then stated if she couldn't figure it out she would be bringing the information back to our office for us to do. Due to her behavior we provided the contact number to our finance office. Then she was rude to her own staff! In no way was the service received satisfiable, and I left sick to my stomach from having to deal with the negative attitude. So, thank you for ruining what was suppose to be a reward for us, and thank you for making us all question why we choose your business to ruin our day. The best hash, eggs, bacon, and coffee in Hornell (and Alfred!) I only had three breakfast opportunities during my visit to Alfred and Billy Schu's was for sure on the list. Nowhere else have I ever seen such hash scrambles, crispy greasy messes of peppers and onions and potatoes and sausage and salsa and hot sauce. Mmmmm. Brings me back to my college days. I can confidently call Billy Schu's *the* Hornell institution, at least as far as restaurants are concerned. I've been coming to this area for a long time and virtually every person I know from around here has made reference to this place at least once. Thank goodness I was finally able to make it here to eat! Billy Schu's appeals to me as more of a local clubhouse than just a restaurant or place to eat. It's almost Norman Rockwell-ian in the way it exists as a place where it seems everyone really knows everyone and you're just as welcome to relax with just a cup of coffee as you are to eat an entire meal. Given its side-street location in the middle of Hornell's Downtown area and diminutive size, it's definitely something you'd have to seek out (or hear about), but it's worth looking for. On a recent Sunday afternoon, the place was crowded with locals having breakfast and lunch and I was glad to be able to do the "walk-through" just so I could see what everyone was eating. It's one of those places where every item looks better than the next. The menu presents a wonderful assortment of comforting, simple home-cooking items from your basic breakfast menu through burgers, sandwiches and dinner platters. I decided to go with breakfast, which was excellent - Eggs with toast and sausage is all you need, though we threw in their "LA Cinnamon Toast" on the side, which is a mind-boggling experience (essentially an oversized slice of cinnamon-raisin brioche slathered with buttery-sugary glaze... so good!). They have a nice selection of home-made desserts too, so I took a piece of hummingbird cake to go, which was outrageous. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. The portions are enormous, the food is superlative and the prices are super reasonable. The service is extraordinary... The waitresses are very friendly and know their customers by name. Billy Schu's is a delightful slice of small-town life. I don't know what else to say except that I am really looking forward to returning here on future visits to Hornell. read more

After reading other reviews of this dump, I'm wondering if the other reviewers and myself were eating at the same Billy Schu's. I don't feel that any restaurant should necessarily be praised for not screwing up scrambled eggs and other breakfast foods. The decor, atmosphere, and other clientele are utterly forgettable. But the main reason I'm giving Billy Schu's 1 star is based on my last two visits there. On the first of these, I ordered an omelet. It was decent and I was chowing it down when my fork hit something hard. there was a 2 inch by 1/4 inch shard of thick plastic in my omelet! I immediately informed my waitress. Minutes later she returns with the explanation that some piece of equipment in the kitchen had shattered and that somehow a shard of the wreckage found its way into my omelet. My response was something like- How the hell do you people make your omelets here? How do you NOT realize a piece of plastic this big in an omelet when you're cooking it?! She apologized and brought out another plastic-free omelet minutes later. On my last visit I ordered the fried chicken dinner- fried chicken, mashed potatoes and broccoli. The broccoli was cold- not just room temperature, but cold. However, the main offender here was the star of this show. Instead of fried chicken, I was served 4 blackened rocks. This poor bird was so over fried that it should never have been plated. The concrete skin was not only inedible, it was uncuttable. This was not even skin, these were shells. My waitress this time acted so surprised that I wanted to send it back, but she was just as responsible as the cook for putting this plate in front of me. I told her to just cancel my order and charge me for the mashed potatoes. I didn't even want to give that charred wreckage to my dog. With all the places in Hornell that serve the exact same food, I don't know why anyone would choose to eat at Billy Schu's. They are cheap- that's true, but that's about all that they have going for them. I won't be going back. You have been warned. read more

This is a little hole in the wall in the downtown area I stopped at on my way back home from about an hour north of here. Since I was traveling and it was a long trip I was looking for something good and inexpensive to "fill me up." Enter "Bill Schu's" into the trip... It was just like I expected, old style downtown café with a long counter and another area with tables. The service was fantastic; the waitress was very friendly and knew almost everyone else that came in the place while I was there. It's not "fast" since there was only one waitress on at the time I was there but I didn't mind as I wasn't in a hurry to get back on the road. As you can imagine with food at a "value" price it was homemade, I can still taste the butter on the bread from the sandwich I had. The portions were good sized, food tasty and the price was right. Hit this place every time I go home. It's been a staple since my childhood. The staff is always friendly and the food made to order and brought quick to you. Breakfast is my favorite thing to get here but recently tried the meatloaf lunch. Some of the best darned meatloaf I've had in a good while. Our go-to breakfast place. Many delicious choices, mostly of the "greasy spoon" variety. Our favorite entree is Billy's homefries, and the potatoes are always perfectly cooked with just the right amount of crispiness. Also, if you go, you must try the cinnamon toast. We have been ordering from Billy Schu's 5 days a week for 4 months. After our last experience we will NEVER be ordering from them again due to the complete lack of respect and utter disregard for customer service; one of the items we ordered was a chicken salad sandwich which tasted rancid, chicken tenders that were over cooked and the french fries were also over cooked! When we called to complain, we spoke to the owner himself who then proceeded to tell us that if we were not happy with the food, to not order from them again!! He also said there was nothing he could do and on top of this, his tone and manner were horrendously rude and he came off as extremely uncaring and aggressive!!! I am a business owner myself and understand that good customer service and professionalism are 2 of the most important things that keep our customers coming back to us. After being treated so disrespectfully; especially since we order $40 worth of food almost everyday, it is astounding to me that the owner was so uncaring when it comes to his own customer satisfaction!!!! I give this place one star, not because of the food which was mediocre at best, but for the service and overall vibe I got from the place. I won't mention names but the wait staff seem a bit 2 faced to me. so my mom and I went to Billy Schu's to go out to eat and I ordered a NY Strip Steak that was $11 and my mom got some fish for $7, it took an hour for my mom to get her fish and it took me an hour and a half to get my steak. My mom's fish tasted ok but mine was completely black, on the top it was kinda burnt but on the bottom it was COMPLETELY burnt and black and I couldn't even cut it or eat it. We gave it back so I only ate fries, and we had to pay $11 for a burnt steak that I didn't even eat, also the place is a dump read more
