First time stopping by Billy's Stone Crab after a beach day at Fort DeSoto. We decided to seat in the rooftop/outdoor seating since the weather was nice and comfortable. Very nice vibe, live music and good service. We were not that hungry but decided to try a couple of appetizers. I ordered the wings, my wife ordered the grouper nuggets. Food was tasty, the wings were good for the price, but the grouper nuggets was not worth the price ($18.99 if I'm not mistaken). We saw they had a 55 year anniversary deal with $9.99 Maine lobster and other great seafood and drink deals and thought it was a great time to gather friends for a visit. 13 of us came in to enjoy 21 delicious lobsters and lots of other tasty, fresh seafood. The restaurant has lots of seating and it's located right on the water with beautiful sunset views. We had a great server, Ricky who graciously handled our somewhat feral pack. She kept the lobsters coming out hot, a well as peel and eat key west shrimp, grouper bites, giant smash burgers, and margaritas. This is a limited time offer, so definitely stop in while they have them in stock and support this great local business during the slower summer months. And wow, 55 years in business is amazing! If you find yourself in Tierra Verde and don't visit Billy's Stone Crab, you'll kick yourself. The rooftop bar has all of that amazing old Florida, come as you are ambiance. The bartenders are adorable and knowledgeable, the drinks are strong and tasty, and the food is high end low frills. Not the cheapest, but that's not why you go. You might catch some live music, you might chat with some locals, and you will definitely forget about the troubles of the outside world for an hour or two. I have eaten here several times over many years. I love the comfortable, old Florida decor and gorgeous views of the water.The menu is mostly seafood. They had a great earlybird special for Maine Lobster at 14.99. We ordered 2 of those and filet medallions. They were not busy & we ended up being very disappointed w our male server. He forgot my greens & later our dessert. I have eaten lobster many times over my life, but I have never had to crack it out myself like you do stone crabs. They cut my husband's so he could easily get his out, but mine was not. I would not order the greens again & the filet didn't have that much flavor. Don't waste your money on the peanut butter pie. Our first time here! We came with some friends on a weekend and were able to get right in. There are lots of tables in the restaurant side with a really nice view from the window tables. They also have a bar side to the left of the restaurant entrance. I'm not sure if food is served over there. All the kids ordered chicken tenders and fries and it was pretty standard. My husband and I ordered the Snow crab legs, and our friends ordered the stone crab. He did have questions about the size and they so kindly walked us over some of the claws to show how big they were! So nice. We really enjoyed the food! It didn't get any better from there -- the food runner was impatient, dismissive, and clearly couldn't care less about doing their job well. And somehow, the food was even worse than the service. For the absurd prices they charge, you'd expect something memorable -- instead, everything was bland, forgettable, and honestly not worth a fraction of what they're charging. It feels like you're paying purely for the name, because the quality just isn't there. This place is all hype and zero substance. After many years I returned to St Pete recently and returned to Billy's that was once my favorite restaurant. What happened? I assume ownership changed at some point and so did Billy's. The food was inedible. Diner food. I ordered a mahi entre that was obviously frozen fish. We also ordered a shrimp entre that were obviously frozen shrimp and dripping with grease. The service was awful. It was obvious that our waiter did not want to be there and was just mailing it in. The property. Let's just say that everything from the menus, to the tables to the floors, etc need a cleaning. ( I didn't see the kitchen) I'm disappointed that my once go to place , a long time ago, is no longer a go. There are so many great restaurants in the St Pete Beach area ,I won't be wasting my appetite, time or money at this place ever again. ( the stone crabs weren't great either!) 5 Stars for the atmosphere ... 3 stars for the food ... balances out to 4 stars average. For those fans of the 1980's, there was a movie called 'Summer Rental' starring John Candy which was filmed in St. Petersburg. This restaurant served as the backdrop for part of the movie, near where the fictitious restaurant set 'The Barnacle' set was built for the movie. This place still feels like a 1980's style beach restaurant (in a good way) with knotty pine shellacked paneling and the 'old fashioned' family restaurant vibe. While you can eat at a table or booth inside the restaurant with a view of the boat slips, the best views are in the upper-bar area, where you can (less comfortably) have a meal with a panoramic view. I came here twice during our trip to St. Petersburg. Once, I had the blackened grouper sandwich, which totally sucked. I would not recommend the blackened grouper, blackened shrimp or scallops. They all looked small/dry and mediocre and the blackened spices were all we could taste. The second time, we had the Stone Crab legs, which is what they are famous for. The crab was very good ... most importantly, fresh and didn't seem frozen, which is a huge thing when eating Stone Crab claws. I am a little guilty feeling about eating Stone Crab claws because I worry that it is a bit inhumane. These crabs regenerate a claw in an incredibly short period of time. However, studies have shown that these crabs may feel pain when they lose their claws. Other studies show that they lack the nervous system to feel it. The crabs aren't killed when claws are harvested and only one claw per time is taken. I saw a video of how this is done and it showed that these crabs actually can pop their own claws off if they are trapped, or in a dangerous situation, so it's not like their claws are being ripped off their body ... so I order them. For those who enjoy crab and lobster, fresh stone crab are a very rare delicacy. Trust me ... you pay for it!! $70 for 3 Jumbo crab claws ... and that's it. No potato, soup, side or salad is included. I ordered Billy's 'famous' side salad for $5.99, taking my total for 3 claws, a side salad and tax/tip to almost $100. The side salad was nothing special ... still trying to figure out what made it 'famous'. However, these were even better than the ones I had at the more famous Joe's Stone Crab in Miami. They seemed fresher. I recommend getting the jumbo, which come 3 per order, and eating them cold with warm drawn butter. They will warm the claws, if you ask, but it's best to eat them cold because the meat doesn't stick to the shell when cold. It takes QUITE a long time to eat, even though they are semi-cracked for you. It took me almost 20-30 minutes to get through 3 crab claws ... but I was getting every last piece of meat out of the shell. I had 3 bloody cuts on my fingers afterwards to prove it! Bottom line ... this feels like a traditional 1980's Florida restaurant ... and there aren't too many of those left these days! I recommend coming here if you are getting Stone Crab, or burgers ... but for fish and shrimp, it might be best to go elsewhere. This has a fun, dive bar feel ... and the upper bar with the views is where you want to eat. Plenty of parking, unless you go on a busy Friday or Saturday dinner. However, you will have to pay $1+ toll to go across from St. Petersburg to Tierra Verde. From the Don Cesar, it's about a 5 minute ride. Go for the view/vibe ... not necessarily the food. read more

Cute spot on the water. Food overall was pretty good. We had stone crab, bang shrimp, and salads to start. Stone crab is always good. Mustard sauce was just ok. Had a different flavor but nothing I couldn't eat. Salads were excellent. Doesn't look like much but the combination with the dressing was very good. The shrimp were overpriced for what you get so wouldn't get try it again. For dinner we had grouper sandwich, hogfish, and grouper dinner. Hogfish was the highlight for all of us. Definitely will get that again blackened. Standard grouper sandwich but still delicious. Overall, we'll be back. Waitress was great and everyone was super appreciative and apologized for the wait as we left. read more

I can't believe I never knew this place was even here.... while recently stacationing on Madeira for a week, rented a deck boat from the marina one day and afterward ventured right around the corner to Billy's and WOW what a cool place! We went to the very top, where the small top outdoor bar accommodates a small group of maybe 30? They probably pack it in, but the day we went there were maybe 12-15, including our group of 5. I ordered a key lime martini (although it came in a drink cup)... It was thick like condensed milk, tasted like key lime with a graham cracker'd rim and it was tasty! Not what I was expecting... kinda novelty. Ordered the grouper nuggets (no cheeks) and those were pretty tasty as well. Walked through the rest of the levels and areas and saw that there's sooooo much space. They have live music here. I think they even have more than one area for live music. I'm going to have to come on a Friday or Saturday night to check all that out - maybe after kayaking nearby off Tierra Verde! read more

Manager such a coward and refuses to get on phone and the girl is afraid of him I guess, she won't even give me his name. So you're in the mood for seafood and in Florida. It's a fortuitous mood to be in. Throw a rock and you'll hit a seafood place. Billy's Stone Crab is tucked back off the beaten path, with a fair bit of parking and has the handy options of steps and a ramp (wheelchair or stair averse friendly). Our party of 4 was sat immediately just, before 5PM on a Sunday, with a view of the water, docks, and a tourboat. The wait staff and drinks were excellent. The Mai Tai in particular was the best I had on this trip. I ordered an appetizer of stone crabs, never having had them before. They were in season, but still fairly expensive ($30 for 3 small-ish legs, which are constituted of a claw, knuckle, and short leg). And honestly? Not worth it. Snow crab is far superior to stone crab all day long flavor and value wise. The stone crab meat is similar in texture, but the flavor is even more subdued, less sweet, and almost mildly tannic or bitter by comparison. It's possible I'm just in the minority here given the name of the place and the price point, but stone crab just isn't very good in my opinion. Be that as it may, I also had a fantastic fried grouper sandwich with some of the best seasoned fries I've ever had. The wife had some garlic parmesan oysters that she's still raving about a week later. And while nobody ordered it, they had a whole lobster special for $20 (which if I had over to do again, would've happened instead of the stone crab). So despite the stone crab not living up to the hype, it was still great food, drinks, and service otherwise. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great seafood meal. read more
