I really try not to define anybody or anyplace in their worst moment but our experience at Binnekill last night calls for a community intervention of sorts Yeah, it was Memorial Sunday but our party of 8 lived thru a godforsaken evening with an unprofessional staff that neglected to serve us explaining the kitchen is getting slammed. We finally managed to get a cocktail order placed but in the 15 after they were poured (we could see) they were watered down from melted ice. Finally walked out after not getting our food order taken for a full hour. Other patrons we saw were getting the same treatment as us considering to bail also. My wife and I liked this place in the past. The community doesn't wanna see a good place go south. Management needs to wake up. read more

I've been coming up to around this area since I was a kid and first time actually eating in town and it did not disappoint. The lemonade here I swear best lemonade I ever had. Enjoyed a fantastic and fun dinner at Binnekill Tavern on a Saturday evening. Warmly welcomed by the uber funny and friendly Nicky who kept our drinks coming all night. Diners have their choice of a spacious indoor dining room with big windows, an outdoor area overlooking a duck stream, and a large bar section that's separated from the dining room. We chose to eat in the cool indoor area due to the hot weather. What sets Binnekill Tavern apart is their genius bartender Dennis who kicks up his reasonably priced potent libations with house-made infusions like rosemary/sage/lavender and turns out (literally) smoking cocktails that will knock your socks off! Loved his rendition of the Moscow Mule called "Bobcats Bite", made with vodka, cherry and balsamic reduction. Hubby appreciated their wide selection of dark draft beers especially the Black Grass Pils Noir. Shared the smoked Catskills trout with greens and horseradish cream to start, very tasty and a nice portion. Prime rib with mashed potatoes was comfort food at its best, a humongous cut with plenty to take home. Shrimp and grits was nicely spiced and tasty. Finished up with two of their cute round desserts, chocolate mousse and cheesecake. Both were enhanced by a yum crunchy graham cracker crust. The friendly and talented chef/owner Bryan (?) stopped by to chat with us, and we saw him make the rounds of other tables as well. We had a reservation for 7:00. Finally got to our table at 7:10-7:15. Waitress took our order then we waited 2 hours for food. One of our group ordered soup as a starter and even THAT didn't show up. There was some guy there who was acting like a "floor manager" of sorts talking to the wait staff occasionally but mostly only walked around the dining room drinking wine and sitting and eating with other tables with two women while we had no food. He never came to our table to apologize, we had to flag down the waitstaff to ask for updates and when I went up to cancel the order and tell him we wanted the bill for our beverages and that we were leaving (after 2 hours and no food) he was arrogant and said "I've opened 16 restaurants...I know what I'm doing." I went back to wait for the bill when the food "magically appeared" minutes later so we had to pay for it. -and BTW...not even an offer to comp us anything for the inconvenience and 2 hr wait. The bun was stale though the fries were good. The famous "Binnekill Schnitzel" was tiny and now swimming in some cranberry sauce/gravy. So sad. read more

Had a great experience at the tavern this past Friday. Our waitress was so kind and accommodating, and the food hit the spot after a road trip up to the Catskills. We didn't get drinks, but the food was very good. I got the chicken pot pie, and while the crust was an excellent homemade pastry, I wish there was more filling. Super packed Tavern which is always a great sign. Regardless it's in a ski town area, always go where the locals recommend. Our B&B manager suggested this restaurant and must make reservations. He was so right! So even with my reservation at 7pm, we still had to wait 15 minutes before we were seated. Dinner crowds start early, think 5pm so know that these places do not open late. This one happens to but you can tell by 8:30pm, the dinner rush is over. Music coming from the speakers and with the chatter from all the diners, it got super loud. This is definitely a lively watering hole. Dennis at the bar, makes some great drinks and has an extensive knowledge of alcohol. My spiked mulled apple cider with Apricot Brandy was excellent. Warmed me up inside and out. Great treat after a day on the slopes. Our server was Nicole. Super friendly and did a fantastic job managing at least 5-6 tables around ours. We pretty much sat one after the other and she was entertaining and attentive to all. Only thing, my complimentary bread got to a table that seated after us and our drinks didn't show up until after our entrees. It was a super busy night (President's Day weekend). Great eats: Fried polenta with cherry tomatoes and warm Goat Cheese dip was really made well. The presentation was neat and the Cherry tomatoes really complimented the taste. Steelhead trout with bok choy, cauliflower puree, and a lemon finish. One complete dish. The fish was baked perfectly - not dry at all. Favorite part of the dish was the cauliflower puree. I wish they offer that as a side. Duck breast seared with spinach, cranberries, lentils, and lemon zest. Thick cut medium slices, very hearty and tender. French bread pizza from the kids menu looked fantastic and my picky kid approved so it must've been good. Cheeseburger from the kids menu was practically the adult portion. We stopped here on our ride upstate and couldn't have picked a more wonderful space. The location over the river is divine and the food was super super yummy. Drinks were an A+. But perhaps most of all we enjoyed talking with our server -- a local woman with some stories to share. Binnekill Tavern So this past Sunday I saw an ad on Facebook featuring some yummy looking shrimp at the Binnekill Tavern in Margaretville NY. At first I was thinking it's too far a drive just for shrimp, but the more I leered at them, the more they beckoned. Alas! I was to weak to resist and Logan and I took off for Margaretville for a late lunch/early dinner!! It was definitely well worth the drive. Besides, the ride itself was painted with beautiful Catskill scenery on both sides of the road! The place has a somewhat rustic feel about it and our view from where we sat was gorgeous as you will note in the images provided. I started with a really yummy Green Onion (Scallion to some) Miso soup with Toasted Crisps. It was stupendously yummy in my opinion. My main consisted of that yummy Shrimp which initially corralled me. I don't know how they cooked these rather large shrimp but without any visible breading or batter the shrimp had a very delicately crunchy coating which made for a truly remarkable sensation and flavor. My goodness, they were so good I was tempted to order another plate to take home and devour later. Logan opted for a massive Cheddar Bacon Burger with Seasoned Fries. I taste tested some of the meat and it really tasted like the beef one can purchase fresh at any one of our local cattle farms. Although lately I'm not much into desserts, they are desserts were extremely tempting and we ordered. Logan ordered a chocolate mousse tart and I ordered a carrot mousse tart. They were exquisite! I was a huge fan of the Binnekill when they opened; it was always a happy place for me and the food was consistently great. Post-pandemic it never seemed to get back to the old days, so I was worried that would never be the same, even after the recent (fall 2023) reboot. I was wrong! The new menu has great variety and the food is fresh and tasty. Service is fantastic. If you had a not-so-great experience here in the past, give it another try. read more

While we awkwardly stood there just waiting to be acknowledged, we saw 2 servers see that we were waiting. More awkward stares from the guests seated right near the door. Got seated in the bar area... and already getting an earful from the server saying sorry, it's crazy busy... someone called off. Mind you.. it honestly wasn't that busy yet. Bread was already buttery and came to us nice and warm. - Ordered the soup of day which was suppose to be butternut squash soup.. and was disappointed when a Green Onion soup came out. The server came out super fast once it was delivered (she must have seen my reaction) and said they didn't tell me they changed the soup. For $8 this definitely was not worth it.. it was basically flavorless broth with chopped green onions in the broth - Fries Polenta with fondue cheese. This was tasty! - Cheddar Bacon cheeseburger with fries. Nothing special. Wanted it medium well and got it well done. It was dry with not much flavor. Fries you can tell had a combo of fresh and old fries because some were crispier like it had been sitting in the fried for a while and some weren't as crispy. Just not consistent. Service SLOOOWWWWWW! We saw disappointed guests all around us because they hadn't been served. It did get busier all night.. but when you see the bartender helping out with tables but bad mouthing the servers In how they're suppose to do their jobs.. that's really unprofessional. The servers were definitely overwhelmed. Our server was doing everyone else's job while we saw 2 other servers just aimlessly walking around doing nothing important. Price Overpriced! Nothing stood out about their food. $8 for freakin soup and it wasn't even what was told to us. Their green onion soup was tasteless broth with chopped green onions. Nothing special. If I were to visit this area again.. I definitely won't be back. It sucks because there's not too many options around here so you're almost forced to come here! I really wanted to give 5 stars...i really did. We made a reservation for 4 adults and 2 kids. We were shown a table in the bar area. When my wife mentioned this issue to a server/hostess, we were told "well people just came in", to which my wife said "that's why we made a reservation". Okay, we can look past that. Chris was our waiter, and he is also a bartender and all around good guy. He was amazing desiring our service. The specials were explained to us, we put our 4 year olds order in (buttered noodles---he's a food connoisseur), and decided on our meal. My wife ordered the pork belly appetizer and mussel appetizer as her entree. The pork belly looked good, but it was small. The mussels....let me start by saying that when one orders mussels, you are taking a risk that you may get a couple sandy ones. Unfortunately, 7-10 of hers were extremely sandy. In fact, the mussels were served in a white wine, garlic butter, and Aleppo pepper broth, and while the broth in the other 3 portions at the table was this beautiful hue of orange, my wife's was darker due to the sand. I tried a couple and the amount of sand/grit just turned me off. The dish was inedible.* My father in law had the mussels as an app, and the duck special. First, his mussels were fine, although he didn't have much broth to go with the homemade crostini served with the dish. The duck...he asked for it medium rare (the way duck should be), unfortunately, it came out medium/medium well. There were some medium rare pieces but most were overcooked. The duck had some amazing flavor though! I ordered pan fried oysters and a braised lamb shank special. The pan fried oysters were a HUGE disappointment. First, they only came 5 to an order...not even a half dozen. Second, they were TINY! The problem with tiny pan friend oysters? They get really tough. Plus it wasn't really filling at all. They were set on top of black beans (that were uncooked), and it had lettuce chiffonaded under the oyster (which was mentioned in the food description) but it didn't do anything for the dish. It was a waste. The lamb shank, this thing was HUGE! It was described as being braised with tomato and rosemary, and while I did get a hint of rosemary, the tomato flavor was not there. In fact, there wasn't any of the braising liquid served with the shank. It was served on top of some grits with rainbow carrots. There were a couple carrot rounds on my plate, but that was it. The dish was good, the lamb super tender and moist, a wee bit under seasoned, but not awful. I probably won't order it again. I said earlier that Chris was a great server...and he was, unfortunately, he not only had to bartend, he also had 4 or 5 other tables ranging from our 6 top to parties of 2-4. He was overworked. He did not check on us after our food was delivered, which was because he was too busy! We ran out of water, we needed more wine, none of these requests would be filled. There were other runners/assistants running around but they ignored us and others. Another party of 7 were seated on the other side of the wall, and they complained about the service to their server, a dirty blonde woman (the same one who gave us issues regarding tables and seating earlier), who said "yup, people keep coming in I'm the only server down here, and who would think it would be busy?" Well....it's a Friday night, in a skiing area, between Christmas and New Years....what do you expect?!? This is also the model employee who screamed through the restaurant saying "I've got a party of three, put those tables together!" And other such nonsense. While people were eating! She needs a course in professionalism. The restaurant had probably 30-40 tables which is too much for 1 or 2 servers. Management needs to hire more people!! Especially during winter/Christmas break. *We did inform Chris about the sandy mussels. He said he would talk to the kitchen and see what could be done. He got so busy with his other tables, no alternatives were offered to my wife, although the dish was taken off the bill. Not really what we were looking for since my wife didn't have anything to eat but 3 pieces of pork belly. I'll come back and give them another try, but this place has a CULT following in Margaretville. It should....the original Binekill was a staple in the community. I LOVE the direction of the new menu (although I'd love to see the escargot in garlic butter make a comeback). Tonight the overall experience just sucked. Maybe my next review can be 5 stars....I've been waiting for this place to reopen and come back to eat here. My in-laws were shocked at how bad it was tonight as they have eaten here before too. Amazing service, delicious food, lovely ambiance and a truly wonderful night. My boyfriend and I went to celebrate his birthday last night! We started with the crab cakes and burrata. SO GOOD. We loved the figs with the burrata. We also got the shrimp and grits with harissa tomato (I usually don't like grits but these were amazing!! And I loved the sweetness of the tomatoes) and the NY strip with potato gratin and spinach. Every single bite of the potato had a wonderful truffle taste come through- we could not get enough and enjoyed every bite. The service was outstanding!! The waitress/bartender had such great vibes and really worked as a team when it got busy. The waitress was so friendly, made great recommendations, knew the dinner and drinks menu really well and even how the food was made. I had 2 smoked jalapeño margaritas- I was obsessed. The restaurant is clean, comfortable and well cared for. We are happy to bring guests to Binnekill Tavern. Also - we held a reception at Binnekill for our 25th Anniversary. First the good news: food is tasty and portions are generous. Now for the bad: they are severely understaffed, waitresses are stressed and can be terse and defensive. We had to wait a very long time , even for our drinks. The waitress delayed putting our food order in (she was genuinely very, very busy), so we finally got our food well over an hour after ordering. They also nickel-and-dime you: we asked for bread and were charged $5.00 for a basket containing about a quarter of an average-sized baguette. My NY Strip steak was fine but they charged an extra$2.00 for the au poivre sauce. (Newsflash to chef: "Steak au poivre" is a standard French dish. It comes with the sauce automatically). read more

Came here with my husband on a trip to the catskills. The food was OK (his burger was better than my pasta) but the waiters were odd and not trained well (we tried to be understanding but it was just bad)... we asked for the wifi info and they said they weren't sure and it might be their address... we said, well what's the restaurant address?" they said they don't know. What?? How do they not know the address? Fine, we let it go. Then we ordered and they brought us the wrong order, then when they had the right order they brought it to the table next to us by accident. We sat next to a couple who said they waited 50 min for a steak and the waiter admitted the staff got confused. What? Overall, it was pricey for what you get and the waiters had no idea what they were doing. Wasn't the worst but I'm sure there are better restaurants in the area. read more

Well this was my fiance and I's first restaurant stop for her birthday vacation and let me tell you, this place is amazing! We split the Crispy Pork belly buns (appetizer) my girl could not get them out of her head a whole day later! She had the Yogurt Chicken which she enjoyed thoroughly and I had a VERY tender and well-seasoned Ribeye over Garlic Mashed potatoes and topped with an Au Poivre sauce.... the sauce was really well done and the potatoes really tied everything together. For dessert, we had the lava cake (very rich and delectable) and I had the cheesecake with a delicious raspberry sauce topping. I gave my compliments to the waitress and she told me the chef was from the CIA... then clarified that meant the Culinary Institute of America. Thank you for our amazing brunch!!! The quality of the each ingredient is top notch and authentic. We had the Bloody Mary, oysters, pork belly artichoke hash, lemon ricotta pancakes, chicken schnitzel, shrimp and grits, butternut squash soup, and bacon!!! It was a meal to remember!!! Service was phenomenal by Bobby and the entire crew!!! Pricing was good. Great people and amazing food in a pretty special place. We will be back very soon. Really loved their daily soup they had - cream of cauliflower with a hint of curry. Let me balance out these outrageous ratings real quick... 1. Food? DELICIOUS. 2. Service? INCREDIBLE. 3. Ambience? UNIQUE. This restaurant is severely understaffed and clearly people do not understand that. Our waitress doubled as the hostess, there was one bus boy, a second waitress, and the bartender who also turned into a waitress later in the night. These ladies (and the man) were working their butts off to make sure everyone was happy. I didn't catch either waitresses names but they were the sweetest and most accommodating people ever. We got seated right outside next the water and bridge with adorable ducks floating on the river. It was such pretty scenery. Whoever is complaining about the length of the experience clearly just has bad company with them and cannot enjoy the beauty of nature. We had an amazing time eating here. The vegetarian chili was superb, and the chocolate mousse cake with the homemade ice cream? Nothing will ever compare. Please go here and support the local business. If you want your food served quickly then go to Burger King. (There was also an incredibly rude woman sitting behind us who complained about her food and our waitress was nothing but kind to her. This place has taken a definite downturn. Slow and inexperienced service, long waits during obviously slow times, and the food is horrible. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was at least 5 days old, Cole slaw about the same, schnitzel merely passable. The Binnekill had been really good for months but we'll never return. They are always slow, very few waitresses with an attitude - defensive, angry that you might want your drinks, food, or even orders taken until they get around to you which is basically "never" unless you flag somebody down, and even then you are forced to wait. We sat for over 1/2 hour without anyone approaching our table; then we flagged someone down and she sent the chef, who was both waitressing and cooking, to take out order; the drinks came in half an hour, and the food a half an hour after that - more or less - because there was a wait of 10 - 15 minutes between when the first person in our party got their food and the last. Binnekill Tavern review: Poorly trained staff. I can't comment on the food. We never got that far. I made a reservation and when we arrived on time, the laconic hostess meandered over to us and without asking our name, asked only "How many?" The restaurant was not full by any means so perhaps checking off a reserved table's party had arrived was not a priority. She picked up 3 menus and just turned and walked away. We followed. She put the menus on the table and as an afterthought, said that someone would be with us soon. Another person did bring glasses and water without comment. We waited. And waited. We were told that someone would be by to take our order "soon". We waited again. Not wanting to be the "ugly weekenders" we gave things ample time, but after almost 30 minutes of watching the staff clear and reset other tables and walk around between the kitchen and front of the house empty handed, we told the first person we could make eye contact with that we were leaving. She asked if our server had even come over to us, commenting that we were not at one of her tables. The rest of the staff either didn't notice or didn't care as we walked out. As the busy summer season rolls in, management should make a strong effort to be sure that they have trained staff, not just the right head-count. read more

Such an amazing tavern right on the boardwalk in the middle of Margaretville. Went here Sunday afternoon/evening to get some drinks and dinner while visiting the town and was thoroughly impressed. The mixed drink specials were well crafted, and the variety of both draft and canned beers was impressive. The food was also exceptional! The vegan entree options were so nice to find in a small town like this. If I ever come back to this area, I'd definitely stop by again. read more

I love this place. The staff were amazing before Covid19 hit, and they have gone above and beyond to keep the restaurant going. Before COVID-19 this was a great place to have a large group of friends and family to get together at a long table (just make a reservation). All the food is good, and portions are decent. Their fish of the day is always good. I love their schnitzel which comes with the world's best potato salad. The lamb dish is also very good. Some of the worst service I've ever received. Upon arrival we were yelled at by the hostess for booking on OpenTable because apparently they don't give you the table you request (out vs in). She begrudgingly sat us outside anyway. Hey, OpenTable works for other restaurants so that's kinda on you, lady. Not our problem. We were then served lukewarm water by the other hostess. After about 15 minutes our server finally took our drink order. She took our whole entire appetizer and dinner order as well since we'd been there so long already. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The server placed the crab cakes down and said "bang, bang. Bang, bang" which was confusing at best. The bang bang shrimp finally came along with my watery chili covered in GRATED CHEESE. Weird. And no spoon. I felt bad for the server at that point so I let it go and just ate it with a fork. Underwhelming. Our check took a solid 25 minutes. We finally asked the host for it but she ignored us. So I raised my voice and asked a second time to make sure she heard us. Small town gem! Well done Catskills. Providing a cute establishment with really true homemade food. Why did they lose a star. Well because the burger was nothing special (not pictured). The appetizers were robust and had a lot of flavor. The entrées were plentiful and cute! For a small town I would highly recommend it well done! read more

I just paid $86 for two chicken sandwiches! What a rip-off! Yes, the food is tasty but do they really need to charge $4 per cup of coffee and an extra $4 because I want a refill? It's not like this place is fancy or elegant. The waitress forgot to send our order to the kitchen so we waited an hour for the food to arrive. Its a crap-trap. read more

Went to upstate NY for the weekend and landed at this cute tavern and all I have to say is WOW! Their menu is so hearty and inventive ! Their food is delicious and their waitress was amazing ! Memorizing the whole menu of the day to the T and super helpful in choosing our meal! I chose to have the chicken "hen" pot pie with rainbow veggies and it was phenominal. (Lacked salt but least of my worries)! Highly recommend !! read more
