It has a large living room, bedroom with walk-in closet, full kitchen with range/oven, full size fridge, dishwasher and microwave, and a bathroom. There is also a stackable washer/dryer. The staff is very attentive. The nurse noticed that that she was not taking her medications at the right time, and informed me right away. They also alert me when she need additional medication. The staff is very polite and they communicate well. The activities are setup like a cruise ship; there are lots of things to do with others if you like social events, but you can stay in your room if you'd like. In addition to weekly trips to the grocery / drug stores, there are also special events like concerts at North Central College, a movie on site every Sunday in the Great room, and Wii Bowling tournaments. In December, the residents took a bus into downtown Chicago for lunch in the Walnut Room at Macy's and a Christmas concert right after. The food is varied and tastes good. Residents can choose from a Deli/Cafe, Bar/Lounge, or formal sit-down restaurant foe their meal choices, and meals are included in the monthly fee. The campus is great for walking, especially once the weather warms up. There are walking paths with benches, so it's easy to get some exercise or find an isolated spot to read a book. There are gazebos outside the restaurant so dining al fresco is an option. All in all, it's a good fit for mom. She has plenty of opportunities for interaction and she is enjoying her time there.

I have worked in healthcare for quite some time and NEVER had an experience like I did here. Staff is INSANELY abusive both verbally and physically. During my training, one of the workers smacked a patient. I couldn't believe my eyes. There was another staff member telling dementia patients on the 2 nd floor "shut up" or "shut the f&$k up" because they were screaming at him to get out of their room.. i wonder why!? I also witnessed a nurse get into a residents face and threaten to cut his private off. Telling him she was going to bite his finger off too and cursing at him just because he was confused and wanted to take a shower. Another cna was working with a combative patient and said "go ahead b$)ch hit me, I hit back" Another patient on hospice covered in bruises and the girl told me they have no idea what happened!! WHAT?! I didnt even finish my training I could not get out of there fast enough. I wanted to stay and be a gentle hand in a not so gentle place but I want no part of it. The management HAS to know the patients are being treated so poorly. My heart absolutely BREAKS for these people. I feel physically sick thinking about it. The place is also FILTHY. Ask for a full tour. Bathrooms in the rooms are moldy, toilets are never flushed or cleaned, feces everywhere. Trash everywhere. The rooms are all a mess. So dirty id be shocked if they dont have bugs and mice. your loved ones will get diaper changes once a shift, if that. There was a man wearing the same clothes for 5 days!!! So that means no shower? Just awful. Please dont send your loved ones here. The strive unit and downstairs might look halfway decent but im telling you, its not. And to the managers and staff that might read this, DO BETTER. If you dont have compassion and patience you are in the WRONG career field. It is SO easy to be loving and kind to these sweet people. I look at them like family. I get emotionally attached to my patients. The patients have liquor in their rooms and go outside at all hours of the night smoking. Its a complete free for all. Physical fights happen, police get called ect. A nursing home is a home, it should be a safe place for our elderly to spend the little time they have left to be NURSED and NURTURED. Not abused and neglected and have to see and hear complete chaos. This place absolutely needs to be shut down. The turnover rate is insane. They said the place is better than it used to be and they made a lot of changes. I cant imagine how much worse it could be. The management also lied during orientation saying they dont have psych patients and if people are combative they send them out? Dont let them fool you. They also said if you quit within 90 days they will charge you for your uniform. Oh well.

I am not sure what changed, except for the social worker for one, and I believe the "PT Director ". If you are planning on thinking about this place for long term, here are my suggestions...#1 ask them to tour the 2nd floor. If you can get beyond the strong smell of fecal matter you're halfway there, and if you can get by the line of residents blocking hallways waiting for their medication then great ( oh but don't forget to ask for the elevator code as these people are locked up there) #2 if your loved one must leave the facility for any length of time TAKE ALL OF THIER BELONGINGS because I speak from experience you will NOT get them back. #3 Plan on checking on your loved one daily to see if they have been changed (waited 2 hours for my mom to get cleaned up after sitting in a bowel movment ) and had to start marking bandages to see if they were changed every day. #3 Document EVERYTHING because the "administration staff" cannot keep their stories straight, and take pictures. #4 You need to call and nag constantly to get them to take your loved one back to the hospital because clearly they are not well, and do not let the "medical staff" tell you THEY don't see a medical reason (agaim speaking from experience, my mom had a UTI that I was told was too much for a nursing facility to handle. You can never get a hold of a nurse as they never pick up. I get that there are staffing shortages but we could not get a hold of my mom for quite some time. I called the front desk and the super sweet receptionist was going to go up and check herself if nobody picked up. The poor front desk ladies must take a lot of beatings but there are 3 of them that are so nice and so helpful. In addition, they have assisted living plus a number of levels of care up to end of life. They can provide medication to residents, ostomy care, catheter care, bathing, dressing, toileting, housekeeping, escorts by wheel chair to dining and throughout the facility. If you need a medical bed or wheelchair they can help coordinate. If you need to move they have a liaison that would work with your to help bring furniture to their place for design. And also helping thin out belongings . Optional. You can eat in your room. Staff has 24 hour care and shifts with RNs, CNs, LPNs, mgmt director social worker, sales, care coordinator. The facility has indoor parking, handicap too, there is security with locked doors so people cannot get in after a certain hour . There are cameras. There is restaurant quality restaurants, a number of places to eat, depending on if you are assisted living or independent living. And there is a gorgeous rooftop spacious area with loungers and chairs and outdoor furniture with a gorgeous view of downtown Chicago if you want a cocktail. The rooftop is open but w a ceiling. And then there is a facility up top where you can also rent if you have a party. Wall to wall windows. And there's a bar area. There is a large movie theater. There is a beauty salon and they do massages. There is a physical therapy room and physical therapists can work with you depending on your needs. Medicare coordinated. There is a church nearby and walking distance. There are a ton of activities listed on the wall that are going on every single day. They are posted also in the elevator. And you can receive a copy. Every assisted living resident wears alert necklaces around their neck and when you press it, it sends a message to the staff or the nurse in short order to come to your room if there's something urgent or an escort needed. This is not skilled nursing, but it has a lot of features in the plus care category that would meet the needs of most people in their golden years. If you are flat on your back and convalescing, you probably should be in skilled nursing. But that is not the energy or aura of American House. It's a breath of fresh air with senior living to end of life. There's absolutely nothing American House couldn't provide to probably 99% of people. I was very impressed. There is also a grocery store being built across the street. There's parking in front of the building that it's very spacious. If you have to unload a wheelchair. The front door is automatic. It's a building that takes up a full block. It is clean, and the residents are very friendly, and the staff is very friendly. The price point is appropriate and will not break the bank. There are tailored approaches. And it's in Oak Park, which is a lovely community, very diverse w restaurants and parks, and very close to the city. They provide transportation within 8 miles for free. Or rather as part of your monthly rent. This is a month-to-month rental. With a minor down payment. There is also outdoor space in the courtyard and umbrella tables and a bar and a cooking grill. And there's also small gardening with people who may plant vegetables or flowers. The rooms are very modern and comfortable, and there is no stove, but there is a microwave and a sink and stainless steel refrigerator appliances. The rooms are hardwood floors and tall windows. Lots of light. Good views. The windows do not open for safety. The rooms are carpeted. No bath tubs. Walk in showers. And the closet space is huge. The doorways are wide for wheelchairs. You can decorate it the way you like. Utilities are included. You can get a landline separate. But most people have cells. Parking is extra. You are a couple blocks from Rush Hospital. Again great facility. Mary P. is a tremendous asset to American House and is very thorough in her explanations of the offerings of the facility. Subject matter expert, she is great listener. In the assisted living area, some people do put up their names outside their door, but it's like an apartment. And very private. So your doors are not open like a nursing home. And there's a number of areas with televisions and there is a piano, and coffee bar on the first floor. Books to read, games, social schedules. Wonderful, spacious, clean, I give it five stars.

My grandfather lived here for a while. He seemed to be taken care of well enough, however we have a…read morerather big family and I don't think he went more than 1 day without one of us being there to visit and make sure he was ok so he basically had his own "staff" to pick up where Sunrise left off. Also, honestly we did very often slip cash to the caregivers to insure he was well looked after. I can say that there were a few staffers who seemed to truly care for my grandpa and his smile and reaction to their presence was genuine. However, there were some things that bothered me. In the end when he was put in hospice there was a time that he was laying in bed and struggling to breathe. He clearly should've been in a hospital bed that could be properly elevated. I said something to the nurse and she said oh yeah she noticed that a few days ago and meant to ask someone about changing his bed but got too busy since it would be such a big process. DAYS AGO she noticed it! I didn't accept her answer, I personally called his hospice care VITAS HOSPICE and even tho it was very late on a Friday night they sent a proper bed out immediately and within just a few hours he was MUCH more comfortable. That's all it took. A BED. As opposed to the sunrise nurse just addressing the discomfort with stronger narcotics. He did have things stolen while he was alive. And most despicably, in the time immediately after he passed away I knew exactly where his wallet was sitting because I needed info for the funeral home. During the 5mins we had to leave the room someone came innand stole the money in his walllet and stole his handicap parking placard. So that's obviously a well practiced habit of the Sunrise staff if people are so comfortable and confident enough to rob someone who has JUST died and whose family is only steps away. WHATS EVEN MORE DISTURBING is when you think that whichever Sunrise thief it was, their job was to TAKE CARE OF this man. So it makes you wonder, how much does the staff REALLY care about the residents if they are so callous that they can so easily steal from patients only minutes after their death. Other than those things, Sunrise seemed clean, had an active community, is in a beautiful building in a safe and lovely town. And even with its faults it was the best facility he'd ever stayed at...which is scary to think of actually. But it is what it is. So I think it comes down to the sad fact that you simply cannot trust anyone to care for your loved one as well as you would no matter which home/facility they are in, and you need to monitor their care often. Many of the support staff like care techs are minimum wage workers and they can resent the patients /residents for being what they consider "rich" since the rents are so high. So they figure its not a big deal to take money and jewelry or other items...Its just always a risk to let strangers care for your family.

Nurse wouldn't work with and honor hospice nurse notes and medications unless family searched for them and even then, it wasn't on the schedule it should have been. I know it's not an easy job to say the least, I once worked in a facility, but this place needs an overhaul from the top/down. All I can say is if you can, stay with your loved one as much as you can.

The administrative staff was professional, responsive, and compassionate, making a difficult time much easier to navigate. The nursing team treated my father with dignity, kindness, and genuine concern, while the PT/OT staff were knowledgeable, patient, and truly invested in his progress. The social worker was invaluable--guiding our family through care planning and next steps with clarity and empathy. The facility was exceptionally clean, well maintained, and well organized, and communication with our family was excellent throughout.
