I actually made a last minute decision to try this place. I wanted pecan pie for Thanksgiving but most places were sold out so I called ahead of time to make sure they had plenty of pies in stock and they did. I walked in and I was immediately greeted by an associate. I purchased one Vanilla Cupcake, The Elvis, Southern Pecan Pie and four Chewy Pecan Squares. I waited until after our Thanksgiving meal to sample dessert. I took a bite of the Vanilla Cupcake and was not impressed at all. My husband said The Elvis was just ok but dry. The cupcakes did not taste fresh so I tossed the rest of my cupcake in the garbage. The mini Southern Pecan Pie did not have the perfect ratio of pie crust/filling. Too much crust and not enough filling. The taste of the pie was ok. I didn't think the desserts could get any worse but it did. The last dessert I wanted to sample was the Chewy Pecan Square. I love pecans and couldn't wait to take a bite. Unfortunately for me, one bite was all it took before pulling a piece of hair from the Chewy Pecan Square. I'm sure by now you know where the rest of the dessert went. I definitely won't be coming back to try other desserts. read more

I've been a lover of Bird Bakery for many years, since its inception in San Antonio Texas. I've had breakfast, lunch, coffees, teas and birthday cakes over the years and have always been pleased. Sadly that is not the case anymore. As other reviews have documented the quality and staff has gone way done at The Highland Park location. It's clear that the cheerful smiles and work ethic Bird once had are now filled with staff that does not want to work there. The store is filthy with tables being left dirty for 20 minutes if not more as workers walk by and avoid leaving the mess for the next employee to avoid. Service is slow and unpleasant. Almost every order I've received the past 5 times has been wrong, from over cooked eggs to a complete lack of ingredients. No one asks if you need anything when your food is delivered to your table, in fact it's typically slammed down as the staff runs away to avoid getting you a fork or napkin. I wish someone would bring back the passion to this beautiful store and bring it back to the Bird I once knew. read more

This bakery is so cute! Located in one of the upscale shopping "villages" of Highland Park, Bird Bakery serves up Americana bakery fare, a selection of sandwiches, and decent coffee. A friend and I stopped by for an early lunch. I ordered the egg salad sandwich. The first few bites were great - the savoriness of the cheese brought out the creaminess of the egg salad. However, halfway through the sandwich, I started to find the flavors to be overwhelming - I could have used lettuce and a slice of tomato to help cut up the saltiness and richness of the sandwich fillings. My friend ordered the chicken salad sandwich, which did come with lettuce and tomato. The real star of the visit was the chocolate pecan pie. They were serving samples up at the front of the bakery counter, and after trying a bite, I had to buy one. The crust was flaky, yet had a crumb as tender as shortbread. I looked up the recipe later online - the crust benefits from its blend of the favorite flour of the American South (White Lily flour) with European butter (which is fattier than its American counterpart) and a bit of shortening. It was one of the best pie crusts I've ever had. The filling was delicious - the perfect marriage of meaty pecans and bittersweet chocolate - and didn't dissolve into liquid (a maddeningly common issue at other bakeries), even eaten straight out of the oven. The pie also traveled remarkably well - after a weirdly thorough TSA search of the pie, them then dropping it once and me dropping it twice, and 12 hours sitting out on my counter the next day, the pie somehow was still fully intact and tasted just as amazing as those bites of the sample I had in the bakery. The bakery staff were all super friendly and gave me instructions for how to heat up the pie back home. The seating was plentiful, the bakery spacious and clean, and there was a cute little corner for kids. I did find it strange that sandwich prices were listed as "$6.50-10.50", as opposed to listed individually by sandwich as in other cafes/bakeries, but then again, this bakery is located in a luxury shopping village, so I guess their clientele generally doesn't care about exact pricing. All in all, Bird Bakery had a great ambiance for chatting and really picturesque - and delicious - baked goods. I'd definitely stop by (and try out that key lime pie) next time I'm in the area. read more

The days of popping in for a quick wonderful experience seem to be over. It takes almost 30min just to get your food and it's lackluster at best. The staff clearly doesn't care to be there and good luck actually finding a clean table. It's sad as it has always been my favorite food spot in HPV. Today I visited Bird Bakery after trying to reach them via telephone for 3 days in a row to check what gluten free options you have and make sure there were any left before I drove 35 minutes. I stood in line for 10+ minutes, watched many people ahead of me leave and grumble about the lack of attention we customers were receiving. It is my birthday, so we waited til finally one of the several not busy sales associates could tell us there were no gluten free cupcakes. Haven't even mentioned to you that I already wrote an email regarding the gluten free cupcakes and was assured by Christina that every day they have gluten free cupcakes (with an "!"). Regardless of the gluten free part- I shouldn't have to work so hard to give a bakery my money. The case also looked empty and messy. I tried to ignore recent reviews online but based on my experience today, they are accurate. BB's customer service has completely gone to hell. I went into Bird Bakery with a friend this morning. She has told me that she likes the food, but that the service is terrible. I was optimistic though, as I was one of only a handful of people in the store, and I had a quick/small order. There were 3-4 people working behind the counter. I waited in line behind one other customer for over 10 minutes, was never addressed by staff (all had their backs turned away from the customers, one was checking/scrolling her phone). Finally I asked if I could please order some cookies. One of the staff looked up, surprised that I was there, and helped me. Another 10 minutes, and I had my cup of drip coffee. The food was ok, but it really shouldn't be a 20 minute ordeal to buy 2 overpriced cookies and a simple drink . I won't ever go here again. read more

What a perfect lunch spot! The atmosphere is so bright a fun, the line was pretty long at 2:45 with most people being their for a late lunch of snack - I waited about 20 minutes. I had the turkey sandwich with no mayo and it was delicious! The turkey was shaved and there was a lot of it. The bread was very soft - almost too soft where it couldn't hold up all the other ingredients. Everyone seemed to be ordering the lemonade so clearly I got my hands on it. It was very fresh and perfectly sweet - I don't normally go for lemonade so next time to better suit me I would ask for a cup of water and dilute it a bit! I also got 6 mini cupcakes. The coconut was my absolute favorite the the decadent chocolate. I was super bummed they were out of the lavender on but I will for sure be coming back for it! Bird Bakery exceeded my expectations! I am in Orlando and my son is in Dallas at college. I contacted them to ask if they deliver to the college. Bird Bakery went above and beyond to communicate with me about options for my son's birthday goodie box. They packaged it beautifully, printed out a card for me, and even took pictures and sent the pictures to me so I could see what it all looked like. And the delivery service they use was equally amazing. But probably the most important review came from my 19 year old son who raved about the yumminess of the goodies. He commented about how fresh it all tasted and the items were so unique. We sent him chocolate peanut butter cupcakes, sea salt peanut butter bars, and monster cookies. I love the California veggie sandwich, don't get me wrong, but this time when I went, everything went awry. One, we got the veggie again, and I got charged $13 instead of the $8 I got charged the first time I got the sandwich. Umm what? Did they really increase the price $5? I mentioned it when paying that the price was higher than any on the chalkboard. She said, unfortunately those prices aren't correct as they reflect the costs from the San Antonio location. The southern red velvet cupcake is hands down is still my favorite with the carrot close behind. The staff at this location are also very helpful and willing to make suggestions. My favorite lunch sandwich is the California turkey with the pimento cheese in a close second. The baked goods always taste fresh. We all had the California Turkey Sandwich which was Delicious - the raspberry chipotle mayonnaise on the seeded bread was so fresh & tasty. Then we ordered a selection of different flavored mini cupcakes - I especially loved the southern red velvet & the coconut ones. Too full to eat anything more I ordered a Rustic Apple Pie to go - later that evening we followed the easy heat-up instructions & it was completely devoured & I wished I had bought another one to bring back to NY! Honestly, the cupcakes were quite disappointing. I had the chocolate peanut butter cupcake, and the chocolate cake lacked flavor and was quite dense. The peanut butter frosting had a nice flavor, but hard and dry. Had the same experience with the strawberry cupcake - dense, unflavored cake with tasty but dry frosting. So cute inside- an instagrammers dream, I'm sure. The pastries and cakes looked really good (I haven't tried any but they sure look tasty). I had a chicken salad protein plate, which was okay. Just one little scoop of regular chicken salad on a generous portion of fresh arugula and some crispy quinoa crackers. My husband had the California club- which was good, I liked the sweet (strawberry?) sauce in the sandwich- a good compliment to the juicy deli meat.
