My boyfriend and I checked out Birdie's for RVA Restaurant Week. We chose this particular restaurant because of the menu they put out. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp ceviche for starters, which was excellent. I got the whipped feta with crostinis. The feta was great, the bread they served it with was so hard it could break a tooth. Also, a couple of the pieces were burnt. Our pasta dishes came out next. I got the one with shrimp. The pasta was very gummy and undercooked. His pasta was better. We finished with one of each of the desserts. The lemon lavender tiramisu was excellent, the fancy looking brown sugar butter cake had zero flavor. The ambiance was lovely, the wine was good. Went here to celebrate a birthday....Not really that kind of place. If you want a glass of wine or martini in a chill environment, then it's good. We ordered several glasses of wine and cocktails which were good. We ordered the seafood tower which was ok. It's expensive for what you get. Then we each ordered the entree style dishes. Between the quality of these and service.... It's overpriced and super overwhelming. Tuna nachos had three measley pieces of tuna. Basically over $20 for chips. As one of our first great date night spots, we've made a point to stop by on several occasions in the past year or so, including this most recent Richmond Restaurant Week. I also booked myself a solo brunch for the holiday-themed Evergreen when he was busy with work obligations. Vibes are most definitely intimate & cute at Birdie's. Drinks are always carefully curated. Birdie's transformation into the evergreen for the holidays and it is SO CUTE!!! Honestly, the vibes here are immaculate. It's so cutesy and whimsical. The service here is amazing. The staff is so kind and patient even when it's super busy. We tried the crab dip which I thought was so good! 4 years later and I was finally able to visit for dinner! I was very excited for the seafood tower, which included chef's choice of oysters, marinated shrimp, pickled mussels, rockfish crudo, and cured salmon! Great assortment of everything. The oysters were fresh and clean. We got a mix of birthday girl and sewansecott, which had a good balance of sweetness and brine. The cured salmon was little salty, but added some lemon helped! We also ordered the lobster roll (maine style) and they offered to cut it into thirds for us! Very delicious, good portion of lobster chunks, and bread was soft. Only slight hiccup was that the order slip for the chilled seafood orzo wasn't printing, so it wasn't brought out until we asked. Good addition of carbs to the meal, had nice crunch from the cucumber, though I felt there wasn't much calamari or shrimp. I love the cafe night ambiance! They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Would recommend making a reservation regardless. It seems like reading others reviews, it can get pretty busy. We went on a Wednesday night and there were only 2 other tables at a time. Stopped into Birdie's after the 10k for a coffee and pastry. Pros: Super cute decor, kindness staff, small but curated menu. Things to note: the lattes were good but not very hot...they were room temp. So if you like a piping hot latte, make sure to ask for extra hot. The oysters were really delicious and I highly recommend. The brunch menu is small and was still full of fall flavors (pumpkin, butternut squash) and I'm looking forward to see if it changes for spring. It's a small place but the food came out quickly so don't be deterred if it's busy. It is located in the heart of downtown so parking may be difficult depending when you go. TLDR; Their Christmas pop up (the evergreen) is SO FUN. Delicious seasonal cocktails and incredible oysters. Can't wait for next year! Vibes - this is my second time visiting Birdie's during their Christmas pop up. The entire restaurant is covered in decorations making the vibe super fun and inviting. It's really popular so be prepared to wait or sit at the bar if you don't have reservations. Each time our waiter (or bartender) was friendly, attentive, and offered excellent recommendations. Food - everything I've gotten here is delicious. They have a small menu that rotates which can be difficult for picky eaters but my family and I have always enjoyed our meal. Sea bass ceviche: delicious but the sea bass was slightly overpowered by the prominent flavors. Love that it was served on cucumbers. Crab dip: our favorite! SO delicious and comforting. Served with crackers that were equally yummy. We were originally concerned about the portion size but it ended up being a decent amount for 2 people. Oysters: we got 2 of each kind and it was perfect! I'm fairly new to oysters (only having them from one other restaurant in Richmond) and these were a million times better. We liked that there were several types to try - each with a unique flavor profile. Wavelength was the largest but very fleshy. Tasted a lot like the ocean but not in a good way. Will skip these next time. Minnie pearl, beau solieil and northern belle were each DELICIOUS!! They're on the smaller side, and more expensive, but absolutely worth it. For drinks we got their seasonal equivalent of an espresso martini (delicious!!) and a very clean martini which tasted like literal rubbing alcohol. If you like your martini's clean (or enjoy gin) this drink is perfect! Birdie's has become my husband and I's go-to date night spot. We first visited during the Evergreen pop up and had one of the best times. It was such a fun way to celebrate the holidays between the festive cocktails and the beautifully decorated interior. Every time we go, we get AT LEAST a dozen oysters and I would definitely venture to say that it is the thing that they do the best for sure. The accoutrements are perfect and all of the oysters are fresh and clean. They offer a variety and they are organized on the menu from saltiest to sweetest, which is helpful for people like myself who enjoy oysters frequently! We have also enjoyed some others on their menus. Here's what I would highly recommend: COCKTAILS- Sparrow (perfect pairing for oysters, you won't find better), I'm a Pretty Little Birdie, Bloody Mary for Brunch. They also serve Blanchard's Coffee. FOOD- house made salt & vinegar chips are DIVINE. Oysters are a must obviously. Also enjoyed the Lobster Roll, Cucumber & Honey Dew (Brunch), Biscuits & Gravy (Brunch) and Shrimp & Grits (Brunch). A few things that I personally wouldn't recommend is the hot dog, Shrimp Toast, Night Owl, and Crudo. I think the quality for the food was there, these just weren't my favorite flavor wise. The Night Owl has a banana component, and is not what I'm looking for when I am in the mood for an espresso martini. So it is a no from me, although my husband enjoyed it. The service here is slow during brunch, but prompt during dinner service. Overall, we LOVE Birdie's and will continue to frequent and bring friends and family when they are in town. read more

As a member of Common House, I love having two options for places to get food and drinks. I went for dinner last night with my mom and Evergreen decorations are still up. Evergreen is their holiday bar. I got the Broken Bulb which tasted like a christmas spritz. My mom and I shared the seafood tower. In the past, I have been obsessed with the seafood tower. This time it wasn't quite as good as I remembered it. We weren't big fans of the pickled clams and mussels (note: I'm a huge fan of pickled things so was shocked I didn't care for these). They ran out of sardines, so they gave us the lobster salad which was yummy. The oysters were good, but they've been better in the past. Maybe it was just the types they had that night. I'd still come back to try the seafood tower again. We ordered a side of bread which really added to the seafood tower. Like I've said before: Birdies is pleasing to the eye and the taste buds. Visited for the Evergreen holiday pop up! It's super cute inside with Christmas decor everywhere! I went with a friend and we each got a smaller plate item (I got oysters) and 2 drinks! First I tried the reindeer games since it was freezing outside and it's a warm drink kind of like a boozy apple cider. It was delicious and served in a cute Christmas tree mug. The oysters were also very good! The second drink I tried was the broken bulb. I'm not sure how I felt about this one, the flavors are different. I went to Birdie's for the first time during the holidays. My friend learned on Mondays reservations aren't required. We decided to head there right after work for a few holiday themed libations. The line wasn't too terribly bad. We waited for less than an hour. Once we were inside we were seated at the bar and it was totally worth it. The decorations made me feel like I was in the movie a Christmas Carol. It's definitely giving "tacky Christmas" and I loved everything about it! Evergreen was so fun! The decorations really get you in the mood for the holiday season. My favorite movie, Home Alone, was playing in the background. The cocktail menu is well thought out, gives a bunch of options and cute. Reservations are highly recommended. We went on a Monday which is reserved for walk ins. It seems like the later you get there, the less you have to wait. The food menu reminds me more of bar snacks. I've been to birdies mostly during the holidays, and love the themed drinks and decorations. But on a regular day it's just as quaint. It's a small space so reservations are best. But I've had luck with my group of 3-4 either being sat immediately or with a less than 30mins wait. And service is always great. I'm not an oyster fan, and the menu is limited but the drinks are always great. I've had the lobster roll & shrimp toast, and both are pretty good. When you can catch dessert, order it! [Specifically reviewing the Evergreen pop-up] I've always wanted to check out the holiday pop-up at Birdie's and perhaps I had too high expectations for it. Monday is the only day for walk-ins. It took about an hour to get inside as it is really small and has limited seating. I would recommend sticking to groups of 3 or less. I loved all the decorations inside and the drink catalog was cute. The drinks themselves were SO strong, hard to get down, and just not enjoyable. We had planned to try more, especially the cold ones, but one was enough. The lobster roll was amazing and the lemon really came through. The chips were burnt though and some were overly covered in old bay. The service was great and the drinks/food came out quickly. The lobster roll is the only reason I would come back. read more

Stumbled into this place in search of somewhere that served the double whammy of coffee for me pre-night shift and wine for my partner who worked day shift. One of the most pleasant finds we've had in Richmond so far. The ambiance here is stunning - very clean, sleek, fancy-looking interior with a kickass happy hour deal (50% of wine) and it just so happened to be oyster week - so that's cool?! I love the details they put interior from the lighting to the candles to even the pens, and the music fits the setting perfectly. Birdies is a great place for drinks! If you like the Jasper but hate that there is always a wait, this is your spot! We each got the night owl ($14), their version of the espresso martini - it was delicious! We split the birdies chips ($8) - homemade chips with salt & vinegar seasoning paired with a fish dip & caramelized onion dip. So good, highly recommend! The drink prices are what you would expect for cocktails. I was impressed by the food prices. Obviously the seafood is expensive, but I was surprised by how affordable their appetizers and other mains are! Went here for drinks/snacks with friends on a Thursday evening and waited...forever? for everything? Lol. I've been here twice at Christmas and everything was awesome. This was a totally different experience. I was psyched to see they had a hot dog, but the chili on it has way too much cinnamon. The bartender did make a great aviation. A friend and I didn't have a reservation but we were able to score a table nonetheless. We didn't order food, so I can't speak to that. We both started with the Reindeer Games cocktail -- made warm with rum, maple syrup, and apple cider. It would've been way better without the addition of maple syrup, as that heightened the sweetness level way too much. It was like drinking warm sugar. Neither of us were fans. My second cocktail was much better, Santa's Slay. It was a gin based cocktail and was an easy sipper. My friend had the Christmas in LA and seemed to like it, at least more than the first round. This is my second year enjoying The Evergreen at Birdie's holiday pop-up! While I found the experience disorganized with many service hiccups last year, this year was a pleasant improvement. I'm so glad I was able to get a reservation and give The Evergreen another try. The holiday decor was super fun and made for a magical night! I was pleased that our reserved table was ready waiting for us, but it was nice that Birdie's provided complimentary hot cocoa and a heater outside just in case. I love that this year Birdie's offered mocktail and non-alcoholic versions of their holiday drinks. I thoroughly enjoyed my Seasonal Hire made with Seedlip and a non-alcoholic version of the Reindeer Games. Both were delicious. On the night that we dined, the menu was extremely limited and missing many of the offerings shown on the online sample menu. That was disappointing, but the items we tried were tasty. My husband and I shared the Caesar salad, deviled eggs, Birdie's Chips, and crab dip. Everything was good, and my husband also enjoyed his Bird Dog. For dessert, we split a piece of fruit cake that was absolutely fantastic! I also appreciated the great service this year! This is such a fun pop-up to look forward to each holiday season in Richmond! We visited for Evergreen. The decorations were amazing. I was surprised at how small the restaurant was. There were nine two top tables. We were immediately greeted by a very friendly and welcoming staff person. I appreciated that I could make a reservation. I ordered the Seasonal Hire and my daughter ordered the Broken Bulb. My drink was ok but it upset my stomach. My daughter felt her drink was too strong. We really either crab dip. I was driving so only one drink for me. My daughter's drink was too strong for a second. Don't even bother coming here if you have more than 2 people without a reservation because you will be WAITING & will end up separating unless you're okay spending way more time waiting in line than in the bar. So we had 2 friends sitting at the bar & the rest of us were waiting outside. My other 2 friends came before us, so me & my other friend went to the back of the line because we didn't want to cause trouble. But then when my 2 other friends got in their waiter said it would be okay if we came in to sit at their table, so we did & he was totally fine with it but the hostess made a huge scene. She wouldn't let us sit together, so another one of us had to go to the bar. She came up to us & went on about how we shouldn't have done that, butts must be in seats immediately, yada yada. Our waiter said not to worry about it but we separated just to appease her. There was one lady in a large group who'd been waiting longer but hadn't gotten in because her party refused to split up but she threw the biggest fit about us getting in & the hostess agreed with her & got the manager involved and all. They let us stay but the whole time that other lady was giving us the dirtiest look from the outside. If I hadn't already ordered my drink, I would've left, because the vibes were far from holly jolly. My eggnog drink itself was decent, but didn't taste too eggnoggy. The other drink I tried was the hot chocolate one, the coco itself was good but the drink was soo strong it was hard to drink. The lobster roles were really good but the homemade chips were too salty to eat. If you like smoky caramel then I highly recommend the chocolate torte, I'm not usually big on smoked stuff but it went well with the very chocolatey torte. My biggest complaint would be a person sitting next to us who was rather loud, the tables are so close together that we couldn't have a conversation because we didn't feel comfortable trying to talk over the person next to us. read more
