The service was terrible and the drinks were lousy. It took half an hour to just find out what the bartender's choice was that day. In the time we were waiting, another table got their entrees AND had finished eating before we had even gotten an answer. A second person had asked us about drinks in the meantime, and she had disappeared as well. Once we did get our cocktails, they were awful. The food was okay, but again with the terrible service, we had to stop a server from trying to take our dishes away while they were still half full of food (what happened to asking first???), but once the plates were empty, no one came by and the waitstaff seemed to have vanished. Upon getting hold of our check we proceeded down the street for dessert and better drinks. The only thing that might tempt me back is that outdoor patio in the height of summer. read more

Birdshit House more like. It might be ok for beers or sitting outside, but the inside is a gross dirty mess. Four of us ordered food and drinks, the food was truly inedible. Wild Boar meatloaf: 3 really dry slices, with a long hair in the veg as garnish. Cuban monsieur: Cold and dry sliced Pork, one rock hard chunk of Pork belly. Burger: Overcooked with burnt fries. Tacos: Chicken was dry and cold. This was sent back,it came back hot, but so did the salad and Sour Cream. The Waitress was great and the manager took two items off the check, but by that point the damage had been done. We will not be going back, and it makes me not want to try the sister restaurant Gleasons. read more

Is the bar scene in Westchester bringing you down? I, for one, am very tired of the choice being between the luxurious bar, or the local dive. As it so happens, I may have found a nice solution in Birdsall House. The ambiance is laid back, and the staff and patrons are very friendly. The bar is located in Peekskill, which has a reputation for drawing creative minds. It may surprise you to find that the interior is actually very cozy and familiar, not artsy; likewise, you won't find the loud and glamorous styling of other 914 bars. Birdsall is just an easy theme done right. The bar is roomy with a divider down the middle to separate the booths from the counter. A simple interior of wooden surfaces coupled with off-white walls, and a few classy decorations, encourage a pleasant mood. My favorite detail? The drink list, of course! I haven't seen this many craft beers on-tap since the Barcade in Brooklyn, which Birdsall easily equals. Where Birdsall gets really special is when you talk with the people there. Now, I will say that I have only visited during off days when there were a handful of people in the entire establishment. According to the bartender, the place is usually much busier. That said I really enjoyed the people here. This is not a bar where people are going to flaunt their money, or act pretentious in any way. This is a place for open discussion. Couples were talking about video games! A big group was having a corny pun contest! I had a long conversation with a few Spanish speakers about the differences in Spanish-speaking cultures. Finally, a bar where I'm actually feeling invigorated by the conversation going on around me. The bartender was equally conversational. She gave me her full attention, and never had an attitude about it. Let me tell you, this is a rare quality. This bar really lives up to the hype. Make sure to check it out. So, if you scroll down, you'll see a review I wrote a little over 2 years ago. Back then, Birdsall was the best restaurant in Northern Westchester hands down. Well, things have changed. Went there for Sunday brunch (usually a sure fire hit) with our son and we ordered a mimosa and a bloody mary. The drinks were in small glasses, the bloody mary was definitely a mix and there were no pickles or beans or salt on the rim. The mimosa was served in a DIRTY glass (lipstick on the rim)...they didn't replace the glass - they just WIPED the rim!! I get being busy but c'mon! I had the corned beef hash...they made it smaller! And overcooked it...what a pity. The lentil hashbrown tart? No more lentils!! So sad. There are some great places in Peekskill (Hudson Room, Iron Vine, Peekskill Brewery, Taco Dive Bar), please try one of these places instead...Birdsall has gone to the birds! read more

A real gem for beer lovers! I live about 35-40 minutes South of Peekskill and I try and swing by there anytime I'm in the area. Amazing, revolving selection of fine craft beers, and very tasty food. The blackened tofu sandwich is a favorite that I've had there several times, and their hand made french fries are outrageous! All placed in a very cool, old school bar/restaurant space with a friendly knowledgable staff, great music, and some nights they project old movies on the wall opposite the bar. In the warmer weather there's also a nice garden area with tables as well. Great place! read more

I seriously love this place and recommend it to everyone. I haven't had one friend come here and not leave fully stuffed and ranting about how good their food is. Not many pubs cater to vegetarians but this one does it well (most will throw together a horrible grilled cheese trying to make it look like they care) - this place makes different foods that you can't wait to try whether you eat meat or not and they're delicious. BTW they also have an extensive selection of craft beers. My friends rant and rave and drool-while-they're-glomming the bacon ice cream so I'd have to tell you to try it to finish off your meal. read more

I enjoyed a lovely afternoon lunch at Birdsall House after concluding a hike at the nearby Breakneck Ridge. What a cool place! They had a plethora of quirky, mostly local brews on tap. And they perfectly complemented the simple menu of sandwich and gastropub favorites. My friend and I both decided on the Cuban Monsieur. We were thoroughly impressed with what arrived: a unique mashup of two delicious classics. The ham was remarkable, forgoing the typical saltiness for a heartier smoky flavor. We had a few misgivings, such as the relative lack of pork belly and mustard, which would be more forgivable if not for the $18 price tag. I really like this dark and hipsterish gastropub. Last night was my second time eating at Birdsall House. My husband and I started with a flight of beer. Original Sin Cider (awesome), Avery IPA (awesome), Some sort of Cream Ale (warm and yuck), Lagunitas Sumpin Sumpin (a hoppy wheat that's crisp and refreshing) and darn I've forgotten the last one! For our appetizer we shared the Hudson Valley Cheese Plate. The three cheeses on the plate were all super tasty; one soft, one hard and the other semi-soft. They came with a small sliced baguette, a fig spread that was one of the best things I've ever eaten (it was spiced with cinnamon and tasted exactly like fall) as well as thinly sliced apples, grapes and spicy almonds. For my entree I ordered the Hemlock Hill Burger on a Challah Bun. It was served with house-made ketchup and mustard (!). It's the little things, right? The mustard is spicy and honey flavored. It's got caraway seeds in it that are really fun to crunch on and add great flavor. I asked for my burger medium and it was a bit pink inside. It was extremely flavorful and fresh. The fries were also fantastic; crispy yet thick and a little burnt around some edges. Now that I'm writing this review, I'm realizing even more so how much I really enjoyed my meal. My husband wasn't as happy with his choice. He ordered the rib-eye and said it just wasn't a great cut of meat. The rib-eye was served with a cold potato salad that I tried and thought was kind of bland. We both enjoyed the greens on his plate. For dessert we each ordered a slice of chocolate pie (Gluttons!). The waiter actually laughed when we told him we each wanted our own. What can I say, I don't like to share dessert. The chocolate cake was extremely underwhelming. It'd obviously been stored in the fridge or freezer and it was tough and tasteless. The frosting didn't have much of a chocolate flavor; I think the butter overpowered the sugar and cocoa. Overall, this place is great. I think we didn't order the right dessert. The place was busy but not overcrowded and we didn't have to wait for a table. I will return. read more

The true rating would be 3.5 stars, but I do not have that option so they get bumped up. The wings at Birdsall House are AMAZING! They are a bit pricey at ~$16 but they are totally worth it and I highly recommend them if you are a fan of wings. The other food is acceptable, it's just pricey for what you get and generally average. The beer selection is usually decent, but again, maybe $1 more than you'd expect to pay in Peekskill. The outdoor area is cool. Great place to come in the summer. read more

This is overpriced pub fare. The food was not very good - I don't have a creative foodie way of saying it. It just wasn't very good. If our meal (for two people) cost $25-30 that categorization would be acceptable for such a bar-atmosphere place. But it cost us $30+ per entree plus drinks for bad food in a crowded bar-like establishment. As others have said, if you want a beer come here. If you want dinner go elsewhere! read more

Love the place for lunch or early dinner, but when the sun goes down this small hideaway gets so loud you can barely hear yourself think let alone the person sitting opposite you. I think it was unique to this visit, but they seemed under staffed with the large crowd, or staff couldn't get to the tables because people were standing between them. Either way it's not what I was looking for at the moment... As far as the food. Very good, well sized portions - left neither hungry nor stuffed and seasoned well. read more

Had the stuffed roast pork with figs and walnuts - served in a bed of Cannelloni beans and escarole - YUMMY!!!! Service was excellent, the outdoor Beer Garden was a perfect ending to our OctoberFest Day at Bear Mountain. The indoor seating was a bit noisy so we elected to sit our doors and wI was happy with this. By far my new favorite place to hang out and enjoy a few beers with friends. Perfect atmosphere for a laid back Saturday afternoon, and the staff are really friendly. The beet burger with goat cheese is a must try, although nothing compares to the flavor of the hemlock hill burger. Everything is perfectly seasoned adding enough complexity to please your palate. Obviously there is a large selection of craft beers, but they change frequently so make sure to get a growler on your way out! read more

Pardon my ignorance, but I had no idea that places this F'n sweet existed in Peekskill, NY. I was on an autumnal-weekend-getaway from Brooklyn, and I luckily found this wonderful establishment. -amazing selection of alcohol, with a huge focus on new york state breweries -tantalizing menu, with a huge focus on local ingredients and meat sourced from a farm 5 miles away. -hudson valley cheese and house-made charcuterie -the menu hovers somewhere in between new american, french, and classic bar food. all of it inspired and exciting. -many options involving their succulent pulled pork (nachos! pork and stout chilli!) -wicked cool server who gave my girlfriend props for adding bacon to her beet and grain burger. The clencher: it's HISTORICAL, to boot. Came here for lunch on Saturday based on Yelp's review, I had an interesting experience. When my friends and I got here, we were starving, we sat at the bar, the bartender was very nice. He explained the menu pretty well and we ordered a few things including market salad, chili bowl, soup of the day (hot & sour) bowl and fries. The market salad was priced at $13, which is quite expensive for a salad that has no proteins or cheese, but the bar tender explained that it's a big size of salad and all the ingredients are locally sourced, so we ordered it anyway. When the salad arrived, we almost fell off the chair, because it was fairly small, only some leaves, some chopped figs and very thin sliced pears....it was tiny. My friend couldn't help and complained to the bar tender, he went to talk to the kitchen to see if we can get more toppings, and when he came back, he said they will take the salad of the bill. We were not expecting it and thought it was good customer service. The rest of the plates came out well actually, both cili and soup were delicious and the size was generous. At the end, we were very happy with the meal and it turned out to be a pleasant experience. read more

This place was recommended to us by a friend, and it didn't disappoint! They make everything on the menu in-house (yes, even the ketchup is homemade and delicious!), and they have a lot of microbrews and craft beers to choose from. The beer list is great because it gives you a lot of information about each beer, which my husband was really happy about. The food was phenomenal! We had the mac & cheese with sweet potato, bacon and smoked almonds as an appetizer. This really showed off the quality of the local ingredients. It was served over some greens with sage oil, which didn't seem like it would work together, but it totally did. My husband had the jambalaya for dinner, which had pulled pork, shrimp and their house-made smoked andouille. He said the sausage was spectacular. I had the pulled pork sandwich, and it was perfection. It was on a cranberry multigrain bread with some really tasty garlic aioli and pickled carrots. The only words of caution I have about this place are to make reservations, because it's PACKED. And also be prepared to drive around for a while to look for parking on the street. read more

Thank y'all other Yelpers for your reviews ... my dear friend and I were looking for good grub after a full afternoon of walking at the Buddhist Monastery and Birdsall came up after typing in "Vegetarian" (to appease the palette of 1 of us). What caught my eye 1st was the beet and grain burger and it was indeed phenomenal. Even more outrageous were the fries ... hands-down, best hand-cut fries either of us have ever had. My friend got the ribs and her descriptor of choice is "succulent" . And they were only an appetizer which she would have welcomed as a full entree. 1 issue was that her burger was not cooked properly and even after taken back, it still wasn't right. Thankfully, we had the most amazing server and manager who wanted to right this for us and not only took off the burger from the bill but they added a free dessert !! We split a trio of handmade ice cream scoops: rhubarb, vanilla and strawberry. We both agreed the vanilla was the winner and the other flavors great too. This place is a keeper. Wow. That was awesome. Smoked chicken wings, beet quinoa burger with goat cheese, the smoked brisket burger...all with delicious homemade sauces. Yes, they make their own ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, mayo, and the blue cheese dressing. And they are incredible...as long as you are willing to explore flavors that don't exist in Heinz and Hellmans. It is on the pricey side, about $15-18 for apps and lunch, but so worth it? My bf and I came here the other day to grab a quick bite before going to a friends house. We are not from the area, so we decided to check out her Yelp page to see what she suggested as "must go to places". This was one of the options, so we decided to check it out. The place itself is kind of dark inside (your typical bar atmosphere), but luckily they had seating outside, so we decided to take advantage of the warm weather (sooner than later we will sadly not be able to have that option). The patio is pretty decent in side and there is a beer garden in the back, which would have been awesome if we were to stay later. Anyway.... The food itself was quite delicious. We started off with sweet potato and bacon mac-n-cheese. Yummy! It was made with more of a sharp type of cheddar cheese, so it had a bit of a twist to it. Not as cheesy as your typical mac-n-cheese, but still very good. I then had the ruben and my bf had one of the burgers. Again, both were good, but had a twist to them. My ruben was a little salty, so be sure to get an extra glass of water. Fries came with the ruben and burger - they were great - beyond crispy! The only problem I had was that I didn't like their ketchup. They made their own (it had some strange after flavor) and didn't have any Heinz in the back. Not a whole lot to say here to be honest. Pretty underwhelmed. There were a total of 4 patrons that I saw and it seemed to take a light year to get our food. Realistically it was about 30 mins but with that many people, I feel it should have been a bit quicker. I ordered the Cali hamburger medium but it was more medium rare. It was a decent taste but truthfully nothing to write home about. The fries though....OMG they are good. They should definitely capitalize on how good their fries are. I orded the rib-eye steak and will say that it was one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. The wine selections paired very well with the steak. A hidden gem in Peekskill- this bar's kitchen rivals most upscale restaurants in the area. We had a delicious pulled pork sandwich and a mushroom and squash croute; both were delicious. The food here is almost spot-on but with a few missteps. The chili was quite good with smokey chipotle spice. Their version of a Reuben is ok but I am a bigger fan of the classic and missed the tanginess of good vinegary coleslaw. Their Cuban Croque Monsieur is a great idea and I really liked the smoked pork but the belly was just a lump of fatty wet meat that wasn't salted or great. The fries were really good but they don't offer ketchup. That was a huge disappointment bc I really wanted (again) some vinegar/acid to break up the fattiness of the meal. They make their own ketchup but it wasn't to my liking and neither was the other fennel/mustard/I don't really know what that stuff was on the table. The food was still good but I think I would be raving right now had those two items been tweaked. As for the service: really polite and nice but holy cow are they slow. We ordered at 5:20 and didn't get our food until 6:30. We had a round of drinks and they were nice enough to feed the child at the table but it was ridiculous how long we had to wait for 3 sandwiches, 1 steak and one bowl of soup. If I wanted to go an take up a table for a few hours to catch up with friends, I'd go back here but just for a quick bite, I would not go back. Parking is a small slice of hell too. You will find a municipal lot about 2 blocks away. Just go there. I came in to ask the hostess about parking and she didn't directs us there. Ahh the Birdsall House. Perhaps the most compelling proof of Peekskill's changing image and upgraded dining options. I finally got to experience its wonderfulness a few weeks ago, and am still dreaming about the Reuben sandwich I had. To start, our party headed outdoors to enjoy the live music in the backyard, and ordered the pulled pork nachos while we decided on main courses. The nachos were great (I mean, they're nachos...), and we enjoyed some local Peekskill brews, as well as some other NY beers as we perused their interesting menu. I settled on the Reuben, basically because I think it's a perfect sandwich, and was floored by what the Birdsall House delivered. This sandwich was a glorious creation, from the thick-cut homemade bread, to the tangy sauce, tender and savory corned beef, and amazing sauerkraut. It was so satisfying, and my mixed greens that I subbed in for the fries made me feel like this wasn't a total nutritional loss. Aside from the food, we all enjoyed the selection of beers and whiskeys, as well as the heat lamps that came out once the temperatures dipped. We stopped by here last night b/c we had heard very good things about this local place near our house. They have a very wide selection of crafts beers, in both draft and bottles. Their philosophy is to use ingredients grown locally and in season, which you can definitely tell when you're deciding on what to order and reading the description of each dish. We started off with the BBQ pulled pork nachos - these were RIDICULOUS! The pulled pork itself was great and it was combined with apple salsa, blue tortilla chips and black bean puree = so good. I ordered the Sixpoint Vienna Ale which is a nice pale ale draft. My wife started off with their Crossroads Raspberry Beret which was also good. After cleaning off the nachos plate, we then ordered the Sweet Potato and Bacon Mac N Cheese. This was so freaking good and definitely the BEST BACON I have ever had! The bartender told us that it's fresh cut everyday and the chef/owner cures his own bacon...RIDICULOUSLY GOOD! It sat over a small bed of baby arugula, topped with sage oil...seriously, who thinks of this? I then drank an Empire Cream Ale, which was alright and my wife got a Cider draft, she liked it. I finished with a Sixpoint Vienna Ale, a good IPA. We had their Maple and Bacon Ice Cream. This has bits of bacon in the ice cream with apple butter, bourbon caramel and candied pecans. The waffles that came with this were made of corn meal and I wasn't really digging on them. Overall, this place is great and we're definitely going back to try some of the entrees like their buttermilk fried chicken and biscuits or shrimp and grits.
