I always go with the Beet and Grain burger - ALWAYS. It is fantastic. I can't speak to much else. Excellent beer selection and good atmosphere, though as others have said, it can get a bit loud. My main complaint is that the bill can add up quickly - if you get appetizers and beer on top of an entree or sandwich, it'll be at least $60 for two. read more

This place is seriously everything I like about food. Completely casual, an arsenal of 20 craft brews on tap, and a small but artisinal menu of local Hudson Valley farm products assembled by a kitchen with serious, serious chops (and an affinity for slow smoked meat and bacon!). The house made charcuterie was simply stellar. As good as any charcuterie I've had anywhere. Clean plate time. All kinds of cool local cheeses. Gourmet burgers, pulled pork, and game meats! Salads are of course made with stuff grown just up the road. Live music cranking, loud full house on a Monday evening. Eating alone at the bar. The plates of other food passing by look amazing. There ought to be a law that every town must have a place like this. Unserious people taking food and beer very, very seriously. Winning. The restaurant is in a very popular main street area. Being local I've tried many of the restaurants in town however this restaurant could easily be skipped if looking for a place to dine and have a few drinks. It certainly has the attraction as a local gen however I've been here twice in recent months and the quality and service is probably the worst in town. My last visit to this place was with family and we all ordered burgers a typical menu item but our food came out probably 30-45 minutes after ordering and was served cold with fries. It was not a particularly busy night and our party was only four people. We first ordered a basket of fries to share but none of us could finish the basket it tasted very old and tasted of reused oil and the fries were nearly burnt to a crisp and not the good crisp. The burn that lingers in your mouth kind . The four Birdsall burgers All came out cold including the buns... not warm. and they were well WELL done even though we all ordered medium. Our burgers tasted as if they were all pre-made and sat at room temperature all day. Not juicy but dried out burger meat. Keep in mind if you're looking for a spot with outdoor seating the area is shared with smokers and you would have secondhand smoke with your meal I would highly not recommend eating here read more

The owners are hands on and genuinely seem to enjoy interacting with their customers and the staff, which makes a big difference. Sat at the outdoor picnic tables (where they welcomed my friend's dog), on a clear late-summer day. Food was great - really appreciated that they had some solid vegetarian options. The blackened tofu sandwich was served on thick toasted bread, with this really tasty arugula dressing. This is a review for Birdsall special events as we rented the beer garden for a Friday evening (7/7) to host a wedding rehearsal dinner and get together. They reserved the beer garden for our private party from 6:30 to 10pm and we provided trays of food for our guests with a cash bar. There was a reasonable flat rate for food and space plus an additional labor fee. The outdoor space was perfect for a casual dining and drinking event. The space easily accommodated our 40-50 guests with large wooden picnic tables; plus, the bocce court and hops vines were nice touches. For food, we ordered the fried chicken, pulled pork, wings, lamb sliders, guac + hummus, and jalapeño Mac n cheese. All delicious and amply supplied throughout the evening. For drinks, they set up a dual tap right outside for beer plus wine and sangria. Drinks were good, but pricey at $7 per beer and $10 per wine/sangria. Service was excellent and handled by Lisa and Jess outside. John, the event coordinator, worked closely with us to develop a custom menu. Only hiccup had to do with the tent rental, so make sure that is locked down ahead of your event. Tent rental shop had the wrong date for our event and John made an executive decision for us to forego the tent based on an optimistic outlook for the forecast. Unfortunately, it did land up raining and the lack of a tent created some chaos for our event. Although it was the tent rental shops mistake, there was no communication to us from Birdsall about it until we showed up, shocked to see that there wasn't a tent! Overall, great outdoors space with excellent food. I would recommend doing a drink package instead of cash bar and definitely make sure your tent rental is locked in! read more

My husband and I have been to Birdsall House quite a few times and wound up there late last night for some grub. We attempted to go to the Peekskill Brewery, but it was smelly and crowded and their dining room was closed, so we swung up to Birdsall. It was hoppin' when we entered and the bar was full, but there were tables available. They had a dj spinning some tunes and at first I thought it was a weird place to have a dj, but he was really great! The food took a little while to come, but it was worth the wait. I got a beet burger and my husband the regular burger, both of which are served with caramelized onion and apple. We devoured it all and I especially enjoyed the pickled carrots, the fries, and their homemade sauces. My suggestion--don't be so stingy with the sauces and give me a squeeze bottle! Next suggestion--the beet burger costs $1 less than the regular burger but doesn't come with fries. Either all sandwiches should be served with fries or not. Sheesh! But I did eat every last crunchy, yummy french fry in that humongous side order. read more

If you didnt listen and you're still reading, I'll continue to sing praise. The pulled pork sandwich is amazing. They bake all their own bread, make all their spreads/condiments in house, and pickle their own carrots. The sandwich is so perfect that I honesty have trouble ordering anything else. I've had their daily soup twice and it did not disappoint! They also make their own fries as a side which I recommend. Not top crispy or too soggy, just perfect. And with homemade ketchup that's just a tiny bit spicy, you can't go wrong. Their beer selection rotates between 20 different beers. I've only had one I didn't like and the waitress removed it from my tab and brought something similar that I really enjoyed. They usually have a fruit beer and a cider option as well. One night I had the pleasure of dining while they were playing old black and white films on the wall. Such a great atmosphere. When I visit my parents in Poughkeepie, I'll drive all the way to Peekskill to go to the Birdsall House. So, like I said, go, now. You can thank me later. read more

I can see the 4 and 5-star ratings as one visiting the pub to drink or to casually chill, eat, chat, etc. But our experience was all about the slow. So slow that my 2-year old wanted out of the place. It was a sunny 1pm, there was about a dozen people all on the outside patio. The menu looked nice, the prices were slightly high, but hey i had bbq pulled pork nachos! Unfortunately it took 50-minutes for the food to arrive, at that time my son didn't want any part of this place and was making a fit. With everybody staring at us we had to make our way out. My wife had 1 of her 3 mini-slider burgers and i had my bbq nachos. So i have a new standard, my son is a pretty chill kinda guy, he has his toys and plays around the table, if he gets rowdy we have an iphone for him to play with but if all that fails, i'm sorry that we could not experience this place more. read more

This is a cute little place in Peekskill. We sat outside in the courtyard and enjoyed lovely fall sunshine for brunch. Our menu included one mimosa, fruit and yogurt and then a main of eggs Benedict on wilted spinach and English biscuit- covered in their own made hollandaise sauce. Was yum and very filling. Sit down. Now look up-- over the door where you came in-- YEP, that's the beer list in chalk sprawled across the top of that wall. I'm sure there's an architectural word for that. "The wall over the door". An expansive list to say the least. Who knows if they have them all. I ordered the Brooklyn Spiced something or another and it was sweet and awesome. Their food is rich and tasty and BIG. I felt like it was a little pricey for what the menu says the food is-- but when you get it, you'll be like "OH...OK" Waiter/Bartender/ possibly the person who cooked our food was very nice. It took a while to get fed, but hey--this isn't McWhatevers. I would definitely come back. I went on a rainy day, but they have outdoor seating too. For me Birdsall House has been incredibly hit and miss which may be due to their revolving door of at least three different chefs since it opened. At it's best this is a real hidden gem with a well executed menu. Lately that menu has gotten really over priced for the level of food as I walked out with a $70 bill the other night from one appetizer and two dinners (including a really overpriced $24 pasta). The food is good but the quality simply isn't to that price point. At it's worst, I have been served raw fried chicken and when I tried to send it back the waiter told me "it isn't raw, it's organic". I have cooked long enough to know raw chicken and I've been to enough restaurants to know you don't try to talk the customer into a dish they aren't happy with. So if they can get their pricing under control and get some better consistency this could be a really outstanding restaurant I would eat at every week. Until then the price and "organic chicken" will only get me there every month or so. read more

Mind blowing every time! Great American tavern fare with a hint of American culture from various regions. They do some traditional items like their juicy burgers, some southern flair that includes dishes with grits and others with black eyed peas, and southeastern touch on a classic southwestern appetizer, nachos, but not any type, a pulled pork nachos with shredded apples and topped with roasted jalapenos (my mouth is beginning to water.) Most of the food is local within 100 miles of the place when ever they can which makes them pretty socially conscience. To wash down this great food they have an ever changing selection of craft beers which are locally brewed and others that make their way from the west coast and great lakes region. They also have a bottle list for craft beers. The also have wines if beer is not your thing and the also have a full bar. They also serve up Bud and Bud light for those who are not that adventurist. Going to this place that have a little something for everybody and they flavor and the tasty food they make is terrific! This place is a gem and I hope you like as much as I have. I went to the Birdsall House tonight with my mother and aunt... Trying to mix things up from what they usually eat. First disappointment was the incorrect menu saying they had a beer that they no longer serve. Next disappointment was that their website incorrectly stated that they had a ribs special. These two things are what brought us to the restaurant. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, which was pretty good. My aunt's grilled cheese was on a multigrain bread??? It was gross. Excellent lunch after a nice hike. Friend and I showed up at 1 on a Sunday after hiking Breakneck Ridge with no more expectations than a decent sandwich and some rehydration. Was surprised by the great NY craft beer availability and the short but diverse menu for brunch or lunch. Had the Cuban Monsieur; fantastic mash up of classic cuban sandwich ingredients with super crisp bread and broiled cheese with a mustard kick. The ham was the best I've ever had, perfectly tender and a little smoky. Definitely worth checking out, and I'll have to try to catch a night with live music and to try a few more beers and dinner. read more

After leaving, I was trying to figure out whether or not Birdsall qualifies as five stars, and I think it does. Everything my party ordered was good. Many of the dishes on the menu were creative and interesting. Baked Meyer lemon with goat cheese, jalapeño, and an onion chutney was really interesting and good. The waiter was smart about his beer and food. He knew how the pulled pork was made, and the best way to order it when I asked. And speaking of beer, they have a good craft selection and a small but decent wine list too. I would come back here if I were in the area. I'd seek it out as well. Probably not to the point where I'd rent a car and drive, but it was delicious. read more

One of my favorite places. Excellent for just the beer but the menu is special too. But let's start with the bar itself, maybe the best part of all. I marvel at this bar, it's art deco curves and sleekness that mirror the curves of the room itself. I was told by the bartender that the bar itself is mostly one continuous piece of wood. And it and the floors are original to the room and previous bar. So it's a great little room. Okay, so the BEER! The best selection in the area, lots of NY options, and knowledgeable bartenders who will help you pair the beer with the food or make a suggestion based on what you like. Samples are always acceptable as well. On my most recent visit I had an Ommegang Belgian Pale Ale and then to have something a little lighter with my heavy dinner I had the Empire Cream Ale. Yum. The menu changes regularly and always offers something new -- with lots of local selections. On this trip I started with a cup of the mixed bean soup which was delicious and made with mushrooms. For my entree I had a special which was a lamb and rosemary ragu with mushrooms served over Parisian style gnocchi. Wow, was this fantastic. The gnocchi were softer than you are likely used to and sweeter too. Just wonderful. On previous trips I have sampled many things, they always have a nice charcouterie selection if you like that. The fried chicken is awesome and a HUGE portion -- but I did think it was a bit too salty. I think the chef may have toned down his heavy handed salting since then. Over all a great place, especially if you are a beer fan and love Peekskill. It'll always be one of my go-to places in the area. read more

Some friends and I came here after a nice hike nearby. We were lucky to come while brunch was still going on and I ordered a bloody mary, goat cheese and mustard on crostini and the biscuits and gravy. The bloody mary was REALLY spicy and I LOVED it. Full of flavor and tasted like fresh ingredients were made. The biscuits and gravy had a beautiful poached egg on top and the whole thing was delicious. I would highly recommend! This is by far my favorite restaurant in Peekskill, which says a lot because I work in Peekskill! The food is always phenomenal, the beer list is fantastic, the staff is super friendly and fun, the ambiance is fantastic. The only downside is that when it's busy, the wait for the food is quite long (though worth it, in my opinion). I've never been for brunch, so I can't attest to that - but I've been there for lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. What I thought would appear as an old cottage from the outside, Birdsall House is one of the most memorable restaurants I've been to in my life. I took an hour long train ride up to Peekskill and I'd do it again any day. The service is darling to start. Their entire staff is friendly and well-mannered. From presentation to last hoppy drop of IPA; I enjoyed everything in between. If I had a choice to consume one meal for the remainder of my days, it would be their Rabbit Sausage. Hands down. Hands down. The chef makes this with pistachios! Mama, it is sooooooooo tasty. One thing that's always scared me since I was a little girl was liver. HOWEVER, I tried a bit of this meal and I don't know how in heck this happened but it is darn delicious too. I also tried the Foie Gras number. So smooth and seasoned so well! I long for the day when I can return to this impressive dream of an establishment, fold a napkin into the lap of my dress, and order every single meal on their menu. And might I mention, happy hour is only valid at the bar not tables... first time I'm hearing it, and I wasn't even denied by the bartender, got denied service by who I can only assume was the manager... would not come back as there are tons of other places with better service and better happy hour policies in the area. And to top it off they only have ketchup that they make at the restaurant which tasted very off, was not good and they did not have normal ketchup. read more

Great Summer Spot! Went here this past Saturday for a Rendezbooze with old friends. First thing I liked was the amount of seats at the bar. I looked around and there were numerous booths and tables as well. But I was even more excited to see the seating on the patio and "backyard"--where there were tables that could seat groups of 15, when I stepped outside. Room for seating get's 5 stars. I noticed heaters around which was also assuring since I get cold easily. All in all, it was a great night for our large group, and next time I'll be sure to try out the food! read more

After our lovely dinner there two years ago we went back recently hoping for a replay of our previous experience. Sadly, twas not to be. We entered a virtually empty restaurant and were told by gravel-throated beard man to wait for the hostess as he went back to his conversation with the only other person there-a bartender I presume. Eventually, the hostess appeared and took us to a booth where upon sitting down, I felt like I had just fallen backwards into a bucket and almost banged my chin on the table. Obviously, it's time they upgrade their seating and replace the springs and cushions. The tables could use a good sanding and refinishing too as I snagged my knit shirt on the splintery edges. We ordered beer, iced tea and a app of nachos. The nachos were swimming in grease, all the chips were soggy with it, there was no garnish of fresh pico de gallo or guacamole, just a HUGE lump of sour cream. The meat sauce was weirdly sweet with little a bean or two, but no flavor of chilies, cumin, oregano, cilantro or coriander. Ok that's how they roll, I guess. Then came our sandwiches. Reuben -good, but small with only an afterthought of sauerkraut. Lobster roll delicious but tiny for the $25 price tag. Fries on both plates were obviously cleaned from the bottom of the bag of precooked fries. None were longer than about 1/2 and inch, overcooked and cold. Ugh. Then we come to the easiest item to get right-buttermilk fried chicken sandwich-which was as wrong as could be. Served on ciabatta, the grease from the chicken had totally soaked through both the top and bottom pieces of bread. The chicken itself was dry and flavorless, the coating completely greasy, flabby and tasteless. The only redeeming ingredient on this sandwich was the generous slices of flavorful tomato. It came with a side salad drenched in dressing, or maybe it was just extra grease from my sandwich, I couldn't tell. Either way, I didn't feel so well after eating less than half of it. We took the rest home for my son to finish later, and he felt bad after eating it too. Yeaccchhh. BTW, this was a $17.95 sandwich and the others were more. All in all, $90 plus tip for three sandwiches, an appetizer, two beers and an iced tea is way too much to pay for this chintzy, less than mediocre meal. For that price, it's not unreasonable to expect a comfortable seat, a clean table, and well executed food, if not a table cloth and cloth napkin. Another thing, gravel-throat beard man should just keep his trap shut or learn to keep his voice down. He's so loud we couldn't hear the music or each other over his opinionated din from the depths of hades. read more
