I had noticed this venue on Goldstar. They have discounted tickets on Goldstar, so I paid $13 or something. I decided to treat myself to sweet potato fries. I was there for like an hour before I decided to leave early. The band was non-descript American music that I might find in a venue in Texas or Florida...something random and flavorless. Went to see Lydia Pense and Cold Blood on December 13th, 9pm show. 5 stars for the attentive and personable service, 5 stars for the only food we ordered, the key lime pie, 5 stars for the back-up band and singer, who were amazingly professional and put on such a great show in their own right. The cocktails could use an upgrade in the quality of ingredients. Fresh lime juice, for example, instead of a pre-packaged "sour mix" would take some of the cocktails up several levels. Having said that, it's incredibly rare to find great cocktails at a music venue, so one's expectations should probably be adjusted accordingly. It kills me to have to say this, and this has nothing to do with the venue or the back-up band and singer, but something was really off about Lydia during this performance. I'm a huge, long-time fan, have all of Lydia and Cold Blood's albums and have seen her tear down the house with incredible performances, but something was definitely off with her on this date. She seemed to be continually forgetting the words to her songs, leaving the stage and seemed to be disoriented and in some kind of pain. Anybody know what was up with her? Kudos to the rest of the band for doing their best to put on a great show under the circumstances. They are truly a talented bunch. First time at Biscuits and Blues. Really enjoyed the venue. Today I went me and my husband to see Jeffrey jazz blue singer we got there we purchased the tickets at the restaurant/lounge and we also bought trinkets magnets a saxophone/drum set and we get downstairs and we are greeted with the owner's wife/waitress And let me tell you this she was not customer service experience me 15 years into the business I know that you were supposed to treat your clients with respect. Let them order when they're ready and be hospitable. She was neither me and my husband left. We felt that she was rushing us And I had words with her husband and he had the audacity to hush me I'm over 50 years old I have my own business. I have my own employees. You never do that to somebody. We were there to give them money. We were also there when Dorothy passed away and they had that special event and believe me we gave Money And to be treated like that was disgusting. I will never go back. There was a waiter/also sound music check position and then the front person so there were three people that we would highly recommend. For me, this experience starts as soon as I am walking up to the club on the bustling streets. I enjoy seeing all the people hurrying by. When I walk in I like taking the stairs down to the basement club it adds to the feeling that I am in a different world: a speakeasy, a southern juke joint, a big city club, or a step back in time, a step in the future or maybe a bit of all these, and I like the experience Inside the tables are close, but you can't hear the next table because the music is loud. You might not be able to hear the people sitting at the table with you. On our last visit, we ordered the fried green tomatoes. They were so well prepared I could have eaten two orders. They have some great shows, and I always enjoy the experience. The corporate business next door has flooded the club. I do hope they can resolve this so I can continue to enjoy this venue. read more

Dark, cozy bar with stage...the mood is set and I am ready to eat and hear some BLUES! I had the fried green tomatoes...yum...so hard to find in these parts. Entree was the fried chicken...oh yeah. LOVED the band that night..."Rockin' Johnny" from Chicago. Just a great time. They have 2 shows a night on the weekend. If you go to the early show, you may need to leave so they can get ready for the second show, before you are ready to leave. They certainly leave you wanting more. After many years of wanting to come to Biscuits & Blues, I finally had the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands, Cafe R&B, during my travels. My friend and I loved the venue, ambiance, drinks and food. We shared the Creole Jambalaya and Peppered Beef Brisket. Both dishes were amazing and large portions, we could have easily shared one dish. This place is exactly what I dreamed a blues and jazz lounge would be. It had dim lighting, with vibrant reds and blues lighting the stage. The tables and booths were spaced out enough so that you don't feel claustrophobic, yet close enough so that you still feel a little bit of intimacy. The lounge is broken up into three sections. The first section is the lounge type I think people normally envision when they think of a jazz lounge: Black tables, black chairs, and candles. It offers a relaxing seat where you can enjoy your drink and become fully immersed in the show. The second section, which I sat in, is made up of a row of booths. Here you can watch the show, but it's also ideal for those who are enjoying a meal with the show. The booths were comfortable, and they still offer an excellent view of the stage. The last section is for large groups of people who are dining in. This section is off to the side of the lounge, but seeing as the whole area isn't too large, it still offers a great view of the stage. The dinner prices are a bit expensive, so if you're on a budget I would recommend ordering multiple appetizers. About two or three appetizers could add up to the price of one entrée. I tried the biscuits, the catfish nuggets, the shrimp croquettes, and the fried green tomatoes. I was expecting the food to be better. The biscuits were big, and they looked fluffy; however, they were actually quite dense, and without the honey butter there they would not be worth ordering. The shrimp croquettes and the fried green tomatoes tasted good, but I have had better elsewhere. Even though the other food was mediocre, the catfish nuggets were awesome. They were deep fried (like ¾ of the rest of the meal), but I could really taste the catfish. It wasn't masked by the batter, and it tasted great. The show was amazing. It lasted about an hour and a half or so, with no intermission. The singer was happy to mingle with the fans after the show, which is always appreciative. The staff weren't friendly per se, but they were efficient. They took the orders and brought the food in a very timely manner, but it was also apparent that they weren't happy. The woman at the front desk upstairs also did not seem happy, and she loved to yell at everyone. I did like the fact that the lounge takes place downstairs. BnB, offers some of the best blues in the Bay Area. The Hammond B-3 is amazing, especially when played by Stevie Utstien of Cafe R and B. The food is good and the service is so so. We always take new friends to this venue to share the blues experience with our circles. Tip for newcomers: arrive as early as possible for shows to get good seats and service. Trying to enjoy a meal after the show starts is always a challenge here. Hardcore fans who like to travel can also enjoy a great show at Harvelle's in Santa Monica. This is a great venue for music. We have been here for two shows. Both were excellent. The club is intimate. There is enough space between the tables for private conversations. The food is good. We have enjoyed the crab and corn fritters which come 5 to an order. Between 3 of us, we have tried the ribs, meat loaf, skillet shrimp, shrimp and grits and peppered beef brisket all was tasty. Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. This place offers two of his favorite things: live blues music and southern food. We arrived on time for our reservation and pretty much had pick of the house on where to sit. I was wearing a rather large jacket and unfortunately they don't offer coat check. We sat at a booth and had to lay the jacket next to myself where it was creeping onto our neighbors seating area. The food was great! I went here to see Cedric Burnside and had a great time. It's a cool venue. There's a very intimate feeling with the band. The lighting and sound were simple and well done. I didn't get any food, so I can't speak as to how it tastes. I did drink beer. Not a large selection of beers but they had a decent ipa on draft and that was good enough for me. Firstly, you need to tell people that Iced Teas are $4.00 and that each subsequent refill will be $4.00 and don't make the iced tea so darn satisfyingly good that you'll have 4 refills! (I had a long afternoon of beering with the boyfriend-don't judge) Every entree was about $20, which is not that bad, but nothing tasted like it was worth half of what it cost. Chicken, sausage and shrimp gumbo should've been called Okra, okra, one-shrimp gumbo!! If you know me, I almost always have to have Tabasco, but in cases of cajun fooding, it is completely acceptable! She brought me Franks hot sauce because that's all they had. Yeah, I did not put a wing sauce on my gumbo. The shrimp and corn fritters were ehhh.. Nothing special. Josh had the jambalaya. I'm not sure why...I think Cajun food still confuses him. It was super tomato-ey and just plain not-so-very-good. I had what they are known for: the Southern Fried Chicken...the portion was huge. You get a breast, leg and thigh accompanied by mashed taters and coleslaw. I'm not the hugest fan of blues, and was a little reluctant to accompany my dad to biscuits and blues on a Friday night in downtown San Francisco. But I did. Because I'm an awesome daughter. My dad had purchased tickets online beforehand and I reminded him that it would be a good idea to have the confirmation number handy when we got there. My suggestion was unwarranted because their system is set up perfectly. He only gave them our last name and we were given tickets and told to head downstairs for the show. The seating is first come, first serve, even if you reserve tickets, so come a little earlier if you want specific seats. Honestly, I don't think there are any bad seats, but if you like a certain area of the room, there's no hurt in going early. The waitress took our food and drink orders and came by regularly during the show to check on us. The bus boy (?) though came by so often to clear plates that it became obnoxious and distracting. They serve a variety of southern appetizers and entrees. We ordered the fried chicken plate ($21) and a side of biscuits ($5). I was underwhelmed by the quality and portions, but let's be honest, no one comes here for the food. We watched Tad Robinson and his band play. It was surprisingly great music. I guess I had low expectations, but man, everyone on stage was really really talented. It's kinda crazy that tickets were only $22 and we were able to be so up close and personal. Would I be back? Ehhhh again, I'm not really that into blues... There's also convenient parking next-door at the Mason St. Garage. Every show is a good show..you really can't go wrong! They do a nice job of keeping the blues alive in San Francisco, and it's always good to know you can see pretty good and, every so rare often, awesome bands here most every night. Sadly, management does everything it can to make the club as uncomfortable as possible. It's a blues club? And NO dancing area? That's a big problem. Most recently, they eliminated 7/8ths of the bar area so you have to get there real early to get one of the 4 remaining seats, which are off to the side. The overall atmosphere is stuck up and uptight, not what I look for in a blues joint. So, if you're a tourist staying in Union Square and want to hear some music and eat some pretty good food while staying completely rigid in your cramped seat, it's a good bet. But for a local like me, it's the last place on my list. read more

My roommate ordered the fish and chips, and she was unhappy with them. The fish was definitely frozen, and it was really greasy on the plate. Forget dinner and a movie. Biscuits and Blues is THE spot to enjoy a great meal and entertainment all in one place. The setting is intimate and cozy. The house band is terrific and the perfomance well worth the $20 ticket. Because the place is small, once the music starts, the setting doesn't lend itself to conversation but it does guarantee you a great show. Their menu offers the ultimate in comfort food. There were no misses in our meal the entire night. From the fried green tomatoes and mac n cheese croquettes, to the Peppered Brisket and Fried chicken both accompanied by mashed potatoes; everything was deliciously hearty and satisfying. Their service on the other hand, left much to be desired. Our hostess, though polite, seemed inexperienced and in a hurry to seat us. Small details escaped her i.e. providing us menus (no brainer). Or placing a reserved sign on our booths to deter other patrons from seating themselves in our area (which many did). As for our waitress, she had a sour look on her face and didn't seem all too thrilled to be serving us. She did perk up towards the end of the night, which I'm guessing was due in large part to her guaranteed 20% gratuity (automatic for our party of 12). But at this point it was a case of too little, too late. Aside from the kinks they need to iron out with service, the live music and hearty fare equalled a good night for us all. Haven't been here recently ... but wanted to comment about my experience here since the latest episode of Top Chef got me thinking (and craving) some spicy Southern cooking. The jambalaya is good ... with a little kick .. probably not good for spice-wimps. Cornmeal-Fried Catfish, greens, cornbread, brisket, cajun shrimp = all geezy. There is something to be said about good entertainment and food. I nibbled all night long as the sets kept playing and playing. I remember on the night I was there, Lloyd Gregory played with his band. I forget the musician's name, but a lovely woman sang a heartwarming duet with Gregory ... Joe Crocker's "You Are So Beautiful..." Sure, it annoyed my husband when I hummed that song for days afterward ... but that's how awesome of a time I had at Biscuits & Blues. So this was our second visit to this venue but it's been quite a while since the first. Got there on time for dinner reservation and got seated right away at a nice table close to the stage. The venue is much smaller than other clubs I've been to such as Yoshis or Feinstein's. Drinks were strong, service was really good throughout dinner and the show. Food wise had the shrimp fritters and the nachos both of which were really tasty. I didn't want to order a full blown dinner entree mostly because last time the gumbo wasn't very good so wanted to keep it simple. So this was my first time visiting this venue. I searched for local live music for a birthday celebration and stumbled across this location. When we arrived we were warmly greeted, then checked in and were directed downstairs. Service: Once downstairs the hostesses greeted us and asked where we would like to be seated (which was a plus). We decided on the front near the stage and I'm glad we did. Our waitress (can't recall her name) was wonderful. Attentive, pleasant and had a great attitude. Food: We ordered the Jambalaya (highly recommended)and Salmon dinners, which were delicious. The Mississippi Tea (alcoholic beverage) is everything! Performance: Joe Louis Walker is a legend. He and the band played for over an hour and a half without any breaks. As a lover of blues the music truly fed my soul. Service was great. We came on a Sunday for the early show (7pm). We made reservations for 6 to have a few cocktails and appetizer and get a feel for the best place to sit. We were seated right away. Long islands were on point. Skillet shrimp with chopped garlic, green onions and chili's was very good, not too spicy but a good sauce with juicy plump shrimp (shell on, no heads). We ordered shrimp and grits and the fried chicken meal which came with decent KFC style coleslaw and mashed potatoes and gravy. The fried chicken was good despite not being marinated. The shrimp and grits as also good. There was a rich buttery sauce which looked like it would overwhelm the grits but it complemented the grits and infused with the shrimp. I would have liked a half cup more grits. Good overall tho. I had to have them bring us a fresh biscuit considering its in their name. Biscuit was good. Don't care for the sweet butter spread. Great experience. The live blues was a major plus. For sure will be back. read more

My wife and I stumbled upon this place, looking for some good music in the City. Being our first time, we didn't know what to expect. We had a 6:30 reservations (show up early). We arrived right on time but there were a line of people and it did take us a bit to get past the cashier and seated. Kelly, our waitress was very welcoming and made us feel right at home. The food was on point and the service was good and friendly. The only complaint is that the drinks seemed to be light on alcohol. The band, Café R & B was fantastic...We will definitely come in when they're in town next. This is a great venue; very intimate and cozy. Next time we will make sure to get there by 6 so we can enjoy and complete dinner before the show starts or come to the late showing. I am very happy we found this place. We are already planning to come back to see Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. This is sure to become one of our favorite place for Music in the Bay Area. read more
