I was surprised at how much this place has changed, and not in a good way. Tabiko on not brandade was the first dish to arrive and it never got better. The endive salad was watery and flavorless. My partner ordered the trout. The almond sauce turned what was once a crispy skin into a stretchy, gelatinous, gray film. I ordered the steak frites, which I thought would be safe since this is a classic French dish. It, too, was flavorless, except for a red wine sauce that tasted burnt and completely smothered the room-temp steak. An odd cube of cold herb butter sat on top of the steak, not melting. It looked like guacamole. I almost forgot about the soupy mac n cheese. It was fine. Some members of the staff that congregated around the bar were so loud that I could hear every word of their conversation with one another. It completely overtook the room and made the experience that much more unenjoyable. The one silver lining: our server was great! But, this is the last time we'll be going here. read more

What happened?!? Used to be one of our favorite restaurants in the city for the full experience. While the atmosphere is the same, the food was a bit compromised and rhetorical service is so bad it's almost laughable. The attitude and entitlement are surprising. I suppose it's ok for me to have to go to the bar and ask for a wine mid dinner while all employees are tasting cocktails and talking but it would be nice if you would clear my plate before bringing the check. I'm sorry if the kids who were coloring at the table bothered you so much. read more

Horrible service from a pushy Houdini waitress. 7pm dinner res and we arrived 5 min early for party of 8. Half of the party arrived and we wanted to wait for the rest of the party to arrive before ordering our wine. Waitress rushed and asked us 2nd time by 7:10 what drinks we wanted. Then when we ordered the first bottle with a couple of people not drinking, she insisted she could only fill 4 glasses with one bottle and that a second bottle is needed. Fine. For food ordering, she let us know that for such a large party, we need to order appetizer and entree at the same time. Fine. Then she gave us dessert spoons and the servers brought a bday dessert for our friend. None of us even got the dessert menu. Waitress disappeared. we had to find another waitress to get dessert menu. 2nd waitress was very professional and took our dessert order while my friend waited with the ice cream melting. Fine. Then after dessert is served, original waitress appeared and offered to take our coffee order. Then bill of course arrived with 20% tip automatically added. So glad she remembered to add something without a reminder! Food: it's good but not very authentic or traditional. Or you can call it french with a new twist. The steak tartare could have used more Worcestershire sauce and the fennel salad on the side was probably unnecessary. Asparagus and artichoke salad didn't really remind me of a bistro type of salad. We celebrated our anniversary here this evening. Cute little house with a rabbit warren of rooms to dine in. We were seated in the back room, overlooking the beautiful courtyard (it was rainy tonight - otherwise we would have been out there!). The ceiling fan was on in this room, which made it a bit breezy, but when another table said it was cold, and I requested they turn off the fan, it was done immediately. I had perused the menu before we got there and was very excited to try numerous items. I got the escargot and salad lyonnaise as well as the trout almandine. The escargot were delightfully garlicky, and cooked to perfection. The toasted baguette was a nice touch and just what was needed for all that garlicky goodness left in the pan. The lyonnaise egg was also cooked perfectly, and you can't go wrong with lardons. The trout had a wonderful crispy skin over a huge pile of hericots verts. (I like them a bit more al dente, but the flavor was good). My husband had the house salad and the chicken with mushrooms in a sherry sauce. The chicken was large and cooked perfectly, while the sauce made it special. It was topped with a mound of onion strings. Our service was outstanding, and the atmosphere very nice. We will definitely be back when it's a bit colder for the onion soup, salad and bottle of wine. And we didn't even get to try the cheese! Mon dieu! The waitress was all smiles and very polite. Ordered lemon hot water and was served a small cup of water loaded with two generous wedges of lemons. One of the most citrus water I've had in while, which is completely necessary as it was intended to cleanse out my digestive tract. Back to the course- I ordered the tried and true all time favorite Steak Frites and was not disappointed. The hanger steak was completely drenched in savory bordelaise sauce which i used to dip the fries with. Recommend medium rare to medium. 10/10. read more

Overall: Fantastic French experience with amazing food, service, and atmosphere. The good: The food is phenomenal. I'm not a French foodie, but everything tasted great from the apps to the main course to the desserts. Everything was hot and fresh, was well portioned, and presented well. My boyfriend and I were deciding between Bistro Campagne and a restaurant across the street. There was a 1.5 hour wait at the other establishment, so we came across the street somewhat disappointed. Little did we know we were in for one of the best meals we've ever had!! We were somehow seated right away on a Friday night and greeted by our server who made some excellent recommendations. We started out with the baguette and the cheese plate. These were TO DIE FOR! I am so glad we ordered the baguette, as there was too much cheese for the small amount of bread that came with the cheese plate. The bread was warm and perfectly baked. (According to our waiter, it is from a bakery in Melrose Park. Note to self: find this bakery). We went out of our comfort zone with the steak tartare and were pleasantly surprised! It was served with a quail egg which was very cool. We also split the bistro burger which is among one of the best I've had in the city. Never thought Brie on a burger would be my thing but it just works. To round out the night, we split a piece of the basque cheesecake which was outstanding. I braced myself for the bill and was astounded to see how reasonably priced this all was. I have had far worse meals at much more well-known Chicago restaurants that cost twice as much. The quality of the food and the excellence of the service at Bistro Campagne cannot be overstated. We LOVED our experience here and can't wait to come back! read more

My daughter orders the Mac and cheese and loved it. I ordered the bistro benedict with spinach and sauce on the side. It was delicious. Although i likes the potatoes that come with it, i would get the side salad instead. My mom said it was delicious. My brother got the French toast which was beautiful and tasty. My mom ordered the quiche of the day which she also liked. Bacon was done perfectly. A little pricey for breakfast but worth it. Will be back. Came here for dinner for restaurant week. Loved it! Had the french onion soup - so delicious. My husband and friend ordered the steak frites- done perfectly with a nice sauce on the side. I had the poultry roti forestiere- Amish chicken with wild mushroom ragout and onion frites. The sauce was so delicious i asked for more. Very good chicken. It's a nice restaurant, but my wife's fish was absolutely raw. When we noted this to the waiter, rather than firing a new one and doing it correctly, they just put the entire plate in the oven (this was supposed to be a seared fish) - the plate was scalding to the touch, the accompanying greens has been rendered into grey mush, and the fish turned into a brick. My food was "fine" - not remarkable, but much to complain about. Pretty disappointing! read more

My first time here and man am I kicking myself for not coming sooner! This restaurant brought my husband and I back to Paris: the food, the vibe and the great service. We had the onion soup, fondue, hanger steak, salmon (perfectly cooked with a delicious broth) and the bread pudding and all were absolutely delicious. The bread pudding was top notch and melted in your mouth. I definitely recommend trying this place out. I ordered to go from Bistro Campagne for a fancy dinner. There was a snowstorm that night (of course) and it took almost an hour for me to get it home to eat. The food suffered somewhat from the trip. That said, the food was still very good. French Onion Soup- 5 stars French onion soup from a French restaurant? Let's do it! The Gruyere cheese was amazing, and the bread delicious. My only issue was that I wanted a larger portion for the price. Scallop and shrimp Au Gratin - 5 stars Scallops and shrimp are seasoned and coated in an amazing, buttery sauce and covered with toasted breadcrumbs. Every bite is buttery awesomeness. A decadent dish. Again I wanted more for the price, but its a fancy French restaurant, this was to be expected. Steak Frites - 3 stars Steak and French fries sound like a no brained, so I was disappointed when this dish didn't quite live up to my expectations. The fries and Aioli were good, though they suffered from not being fresh. Sadly, the hangar steak was nothing special in my opinion. Relatively bland, and not particularly tender or juicy, this dish may have suffered the most from to go prep and travel time. Cassoulet - 3 stars When Duck Confit and pork belly are involved with a dish, you don't expect a sausage link to be the star of the show, but that's what happened. The cognac duck sausage was amazing. I kept returning to it. The white beans and carrots were also nicely prepared in a tasty, mild cream sauce that wasn't overpowering. Unfortunately the duck confit was gamey, and the pork belly was bland, making the fatty cut less appetizing than I would have hoped. I left most of the pork belly on the side. Onion frites- 5 stars Delicately shaved onion shreds are battered and gently fried. This is essentially the best order of onion rings you may ever eat. Treat yourself. Mac n Cheese - 4 stars A nice mild Mac & Cheese. Creamy and lightly seasoned, this is a nice addition to your meal, though if you prefer stronger cheeses in you Mac & Cheese. I wasn't the biggest fan of this at first, but reheated the next day, it was great. French Manhattan- 5 stars This was quite a surprise. This was an amazing cocktail, perfectly balanced and delicious. I will be trying to duplicate this at home, it was great. I was wary of the price, but no regrets. Summary This is a nice, pricey French restaurant. There are quite a few dishes that a masterfully done, with a few inconsistent ones as well. We came in for restaurant week so $44/dinner. The ambiance is upscale but not stuffy, with warm, low lighting, good for a date night occasion. Definitely don't sit by the door though; on a cold night like ours, we were frozen solid even though they said we were "right under the heater." Sitting down, we were greeted with a small loaf of bread (wrapped in baking parchment oddly enough) and butter. We weren't given an actual bread knife though so it was impossible to cut into without completely mangling it. We resorted to just tearing pieces off. The butter was rock hard from cold though which was a bit unexpected and a total bummer. And we weren't given any plates. They just sit the bread directly on the paper covered table, which kind of got crumbs everywhere. Our Hors d'oeuvres was the soup du jour: apple chestnut potato soup. It wasn't bad, but not great. It was light while still being creamy and savory, and it was even decorated with edible flowers. But there was absolutely no apple flavor, and I was a bit turned off my the many finger print smudges all along my bowl rim; not the most appetizing thing. For my entree, I got the cote de porc which was a pork chop with mashed potatoes and ham hock cabbage. This was significantly better than everything previous. The pork was super juicy and tender with great flavor, definitely the highlight. The potatoes soaked up a good bit of the smoked maple syrup drizzled about though, and it got overly sweet. The cabbage cut the sweetness a bit with its meaty bitterness though so that was nice. My dessert was the bread pudding, and it was a real delight. It came in muffin form (which was a bit odd) with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel. I probably call it a super moist muffin, over bread pudding. The flavor was phenomenal though. I absolutely recommend if you have strong sweet tooth. Overall, it had friendly (although sometime inattentive) service and a pleasant atmosphere. I just think there some execution issues with some elements of the meal. I don't really think I'd go back anytime other than restaurant week since the prices seem a bit high for what we had. read more

This place is like a secret garden. When walking by on the street, it's hard to see past the foliage and the twinkle lights. The food is really good! Some places over ambiance and sub par food or vice versa. This place delivers both! We split the peach salad and the burger. I wasn't sure about the salad when ordering, but the flavors melded together beautifully! The burger was pretty big, so keep that in mind if you're not super hungry. Also very good! Service was good. The ooooonly thing was something that comes along with any outdoor restaurant, something I realize they can't control. My boyfriend saw a furry creature scuttling along the back wall. I get it, we're in Chicago and it was night time. He thinks they're cute, but I was a little too focused on it. I'll remedy by asking to sit inside or closer to the street next time. :) Something to keep in mind if you're more like me - simply ask to be seated inside or nearer the street. Or just order more wine! :D Looking forward to another visit, especially before winter hits. The pastries sound so good! read more

Came here for restaurant week, as it was recommended by Chicago magazine to be great value/hidden gem, it totally holds up to the claim with the amazing food and the price/portion compared to their regular menu ($33 for 3 courses). You have the option to substitute the items on the restaurant week menu for their regular menu items for a minimal charge, I really liked this flexibility. For appetizer, the 2 of us got the mussel on the RW menu and upgraded to escargot for $3. The mussel (Moules à la Bière) is really good and the portion is pretty big, really liked the sauce. The escargot is quite tender and flavorful. For entrée, we got the trout and the Bœuf Bourguignon. The trout filet is quite nice, and I also really like the risotto that has smoked trout in there, amazing taste. The Bœuf Bourguignon is very tender, and pork lardon (bacon cubes?) complement it really well. For dessert, we really liked the crème brulee (well, you can hardly go wrong with it). Went to Bistro Campagne for Valentine's Day. We had a nice experience! The size and shape of the place makes it hard to have too many tables so we got one along the wall and walkway. Our waitress- Kat- was phenomenal! She was attentive without being overbearing. Never had to ask for a water refill. The only thing that drops a star for me is that my meal, the whitefish special that night, was pretty plain. Not too much flavor. The polenta appetizer was also average, in my opinion. Everyone's different! Overall the space was intimate, great for a date. We would definitely give it another shot. read more

Food is good. We were two couples celebrating anniversaries. The waiter explained that chef wanted us to order everything at once so they can time the meal. Ordered cocktails. Waiter stopped by no less than 6 times during that cocktail looking for our order. Courses came, finished dining. Finishing our conversation. Restaurant clearly not full but manager came to our table to say our time was up. We spent almost $400. We were NOT over staying. It was a horrible end to our evening. If you want good food and want to have a fast night go here. If you want to enjoy, relax, there are much better places in this city. read more

Bistro Campagne is a cozy restaurant with friendly staff, but there was just something a bit off that kept me from fully loving this place. On a Friday night, it was packed; reservations definitely recommended! I loved the vibe and interior of this place. There's old-timey wood everywhere, it's kinda dark, and the small size (maybe room for ~100) makes it feel cozy, especially on a cold evening. And despite being near capacity, the service was seriously impressive. While the menu itself wasn't very allergy-friendly, the staff was incredibly knowledgeable about gluten free (celiac) and what ingredients are in each part of their dishes. They knew about cross contamination and went above and beyond to find a side for me that could be subbed for the fries (which are made in a shared fryer with a whole lot of onion rings). I was seriously blown away by their efforts -- such a rare find! The menu itself was completely French -- from the wine to the entrees to the classic appetizers. And having lived in Paris, I was ecstatic. But my steak frites (minus the frites) tasted like any other American steak I've had countless times, and a couple pieces were so chewy I couldn't eat them. My side of veggies were also super undercooked and difficult to cut. My friend and I didn't want to feel rushed, catching up, so we chose to sit at the bar over a table that had a time limit. Weirdly, the bar seemed to have a time limit too! But it's only a six-seater, and we seem to have caught them on a busier-than-normal night. Don't get me wrong, dinner here was still a pleasant experience, in large part due to the staff. But would I take the train 40+ minutes to come here again? Probably not. It just wasn't the killer French restaurant I was hoping it'd be. But if you live in the neighborhood, I could see this being an a-okay place for a nicer meal. read more

This was one of my favorite restaurants for many years but it has really gone down hill. The best part was the bread and escargot appetizer. Two of us had steak frites and one had the chicken. The steak was tough, the fries were soft with no crispness at all. The chicken was dry. We were celebrating a birthday and wanted our guest to be impressed for her big day . I will not be going back. Not sure if it's a new chef or what the problem is. Also, the prices have increased which wouldn't be a problem if the food was worth it. The service was decent but not memorable. I decided to give places "second" chance or visit more than once before I write them a review. As they say, don't judge the book by it's cover. Well, I came here twice and got two very different experiences. First time was about a year ago for a girls night out and it was amazing! All 4 of us loved it. Tasty food (my favorite was beef bourguignon and my friend loved her trout), nice wine and delicious desert (cream brûlée my favorite) and great atmosphere (not crowded or loud). So after I would give 5 stars. But after last nights dinner I was unfortunately disappointed. We started with beet salad which was good, but nothing special. For main course I had Steak Frites that was way too chewy and I could taste a lot of butter, my fries were too dry so I didn't even touch them. My friend had a duck with the sausage and beans. Beans were best part of her meal since duck and sausage were too dry. We ordered Pain Perdue for desert and it was delicious! Our server, Kay was nice and attending. I was sad to find out that they changed their menu (which can be a great thing) and they no longer have beer bourguignon. read more
