Celebrated a family birthday at FIYA tonight and had a great time. Excellent service and hospitality, along with fine food served in innovative ways, seemed to be the norm. We had a variety of things, including falafel and chicken shawarma hummus appetizers, followed by schnitzel, burgers, etc. all complimented by excellent wines suggested by our server. FIYA features a warm, elegant, but understated vibe that makes for comfortable dining and socializing. Prices are definitely upscale, but quality is extremely high. Third meal at this restaurant. I had brunch and lunch before and they were good. So I tried their dinner this time I visited Chicago. The dinner menu was quite different from the all-day menu; in particular there were more sides and entrees. I ordered the mixed grill for one ($36) with smoked lamb. The cut was lamb shoulder. Came with five thinly sliced pieces. I saw some reviews complaining that their lamb was too fatty. For lamb shoulder, however, I think the amount of fat was acceptable. But I wish there could be more meat. The meat was served over bejeweled rice. Basically it was an aromatic, turmeric & saffron spiced rice with dates, cashews and a tiny bit barberry (only found two). I wish there could be more barberry and fewer dates, because now it was purely sweet. This, together with the oil in the rice and my fatty lamb, made the dish a bit greasy. On the side I got some grilled long hots, grilled tomatoes, pickled cucumbers and tomatoes, ezme, zoug, tahini, and some freshly baked pita. The pita was soft, moist, chewy and paired well with everything else. I wish they could check if the pita was burnt, though -- one of my pita was burnt! Service was OK. Food came out quickly. It was chill to sit at the patio in a late summer, but they should put more lights. Indeed for half of my meal I had to use the flashlight on my phone for lighting lol. read more

On a chilly winter's day let the wood fired oven warm you up along with some butternut squash soup. Just an absolutely fresh, flavorful, and memorable lunch compliments of fiya. Service was awesome. We were on the back end of lunch and they welcomed us in with big smiles and hospitable service. The butternut squash soup was insane. It had subtle baking spice sweetness so each bite was reminiscent of a warm cinnamon roll on a saturday morning. The pepitas offered the critical crunch needed to tie the dish together. The pitas are spectacular. And, you get to watch them get baked right out front! I got the chicken schwarma hummus. The chicken skin was crispy and salty. Absolutely perfect. We were excited to try Fiya for restaurant week! Service overall was a little slow; however, we enjoyed the Mediterranean ambiance and the delicious mezze and entrées. The Jerusalem platter was a nice starter and all of the food tasted authentic and similar to dishes we had in Turkey. The only disappointment was the delivery of one of our four entrées which arrived 12 minutes after the others. We were halfway done with our entrées when our fourth guest's dish arrived. We didn't receive an apology from the Manager or offer to discount the late entrée which would have been a nice touch. Context: I am sober. I went to Fiya with friends and immediately was greeted by inattentive and cold service. When we were finally brought water and asked if we wanted any drinks, I ordered the Cardamom Iced Coffee- that's all the menu said. No ingredients or liquor listed out beside it, just good ole cardamom iced coffee! When my drink came out, I took a sip and immediately knew- this was a cocktail. I had broken my sobriety. Dang, right? Pretty upsetting. When we gently brought this up with the waitress, that there was no indication that this was alcoholic & asked if we could send it back, she begrudgingly agreed but not after leaving us with a snarky comment. About 5-10 minutes later, I could see and hear the waitress complaining about me to another staff member. Not very welcoming. I don't plan on going again after this, especially given their overpriced menu. Big bummer. Used to love this place. If their staff was more kind, attentive, and accommodating, perhaps this review would be different. read more

Had high hopes but weh weh weh...total disappointment. Had the hummus and it was odd tasting. It had Indian spices (curry) and a had boiled egg. Yuck. The fresh pita bread was tasteless and dry. We also had the baked cauliflower and that too was meh. The two apps were so disappointing that we decided to skip the entree and go elsewhere. I really like Fiya because they have so many good vegetarian options to choose from. The restaurant is very cute and vibey, and in the back, there is a huge patio with trees and string lights. There were 4 of us, and we ordered everything to share. We got the salatim, taboon, falafel, and the batata harra. Everything was really really good! The salatim was a lot of food and was a perfect sharing dish, although I liked it so much I would come order this solo as my meal. I think the taboon was my favorite. This was SUCH a cute find! Went here for a date, and is a perfect spot! Their patio is absolutely adorable and in the back, cosy and intimate. (It was just too hot so not outside for me :) Service was STELLAR. I was SO early and the server just let me hang, was kind and kept checking on me (it wasn't super busy or I wouldn't have sat) Order a non alcoholic drink that came looking SO lovely, which we love, because why should non alcoholic not be fun? And anything with lavender is a win in my book. Order the hummus and since I can't have bread they brought me a GIANT extra plate of cucumber, and then even brought some extra pita for my friend :) Had a salmon and tomato dish that was so so flavorful, and my friend had the lamb leg which she loved. Back for another happy hour! I got the smoked whitefish beignets after eyeing them on the menu a couple times and curiosity got the best of me. I will say, I wasn't too impressed. They didn't have much flavor and were quite dense. I think they could benefit from more of the cream sauce on top. Fiya's Restaurant Week menu is one of the best out there. Especially on a Friday night, surrounded by friends, in an igloo, and an accompanying wine pairing with each course. For our first course, we were brought housemade Pita Bread made in the wood oven in the center of the restaurant. This bread came with a housemade Hummus, and several dips like Harissa, Baba Ganoush, and Garlic Tahina. All of which was amazing, but the Tahina, Pita, and Hummus were next level. Second course was a salad with an extremely flavorful fig vinaigrette. Course 3 and 4 were the largest of the meal, with Khachapuri serving as the third course. This was the most memorable of the dishes for me in that it was a bread and cheese boat filled with Shakshuka and a runny eye. It was incredible. The flavors melded in a way that I will absolutely be coming back to Fiya for this dish specifically. We were then brought out our three entrees, which were: Moroccan Salmon, a half Chicken, a Feta-Topped Cauliflower head, and Mashed Potatoes. I am not even a salmon person, but it came served in a red sauce and I loved it. The Chicken was crispy and juicy in all the right places and had great dipping sauces. Both the cauliflower and mashed potatoes were seasoned well too! Dessert was Pavlova and Cheesecake, both of which were not too sweet, and an amazing cap to the full meal. The Cheesecake in particular was a standout. All the wines were perfectly paired and excellent - truly a meal enhancer. Our server and the staff were amazing, constantly checking in on the igloo and letting us hang out a bit as the night grew old. Plates were often shuffled away and each course and wine pairing were brought out relatively quickly after finishing the prior ones. I can't wait to share a meal out on the patio this summer! If you can get your hands on an igloo res while it's still cold out, do it! Totally enhanced the experience of the evening. read more

Fiya is one of my new favorite restaurants!!!! It was SO GOOD. The inside is super cute and fun and our service was great. We came for restaurant week, so we tried so many things. The khachapuri was my favorite. It was essentially a bread boat with tomato sauce, feta cheese and an over easy egg inside. All the pita we had was the softest pita i've ever had. You could tell it was homemade, made in a wood oven and was very authentic. The baba ganoush dip that came with it was my favorite. Another great visit to Fiya. This time I ate off the day menu at the bar. Great atmosphere and ambiance and friendly helpful service. The bartender makes a great old fashioned. I had a green pepper gazpacho with dill. Super flavorful and refreshing. I had their version of a Ruben with house cured wagyu pastrami Gruyère sauerkraut Russian dressing on homemade pita. Walked in with the beau on a Friday night at 7pm and was lucky enough to get seats at the counter around the oven without reservations - it was solidly full, and unsurprisingly so. Fiya has an awesome ambiance: Open, casual and cozy / intimate interior that includes a wood-burning brick oven and nice bar space, and a lush outdoor patio in the back. What a gem! Then comes the food and drinks: Great Middle Eastern / Mediterranean cuisine and a wide variety of beer, wine, and absolutely delicious cocktails, especially those with Israeli-style street sodas. Service was also so friendly, helpful, and efficient. Excellent for dates and small groups, shareable dishes, drinks and tapas, dinner, and vegetarians. Highly recommend the Salatim starter. Happy Hour is from 4-6pm on weekdays, Brunch on weekends, and apparently they JUST opened their new Cafe this August for pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch on weekdays from 11am. The staff here is always so great-- they are welcoming and helpful but not smothering. If Fiya was a little closer to where I live (about 45 minutes away), I'd eat here every week. The decor feels pretty chill but also celebratory. It's a treat to eat glorious flavors all wrapped in the comfort of fresh bread that was baked in and oven right in front of you! I've been to Fiya for all occasions (NYE, birthdays, brunch dates, and just because). Every meal was delicious and perfectly cooked. Even potatoes taste just Better at Fiya. I've brought friends, partner, children, my elderly parents-- everyone I bring loves this place. Do yourself a favor and go, but bring other people so you can try a lot of dishes. read more

Menu is quite diverse with lots of options, best if you come with the intentions of sharing plates with the table. Makes for a better experience and you can try more things! We had mix of stuff- falafel which was great and not overdone like some places, hummus/eggplant platter, roast beef, khachapuri, lamb meatballs, sweet potatoes, schnitzel, potato latkes, steak. Our favorites include the sweet potatoes which were cooked in their wood oven so has that nice Smokey-char. Also loved the falafel and hummus. Service was so so, had to ask several times to order and the food came out of the kitchen in odd way. Meaning mains first then small plates later, so timing was a little off. Overall pretty good food, would probably give 3.5/5 stars. There are better Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food spots in the city but if you love this type of cuisine it's worth trying out. read more

I used to live in this neighborhood years ago and recently paid a visit. I was sad to learn that Jerry's was gone, but I was intrigued to try its replacement. Part of me figured, with so many great Mediterranean restaurants in the neighborhood, yet one more might mean pointless overkill. But this turned out to be the best meal I had in over 2 weeks of dining in Chicago - and I do consider Chicago to be the food capital of the world. Two friends and I were seated in the back room, which was fine. Our server was very patient and bubbly. The menu is meant to be shared. We ordered in courses. Right off the bat, I can say that this was the best hummus I've ever had in my life, and I've eaten a heck of a lot of hummus. The boiled egg is a really nice touch, but even without the egg, there was just something so creamy and nutty about this hummus. It was flawless. All three of us felt that way. I could have eaten this for hours on end and been completely happy with just that. But we also had the large appetizer platter with all the little dips and pickles and such, and that was also delicious. The mezze plate and the delicious pita and the hummus made a perfect meal. The haloumi cheese was nice, though definitely on the sweet side. Doused in rich honey, we felt it would have been fine as a dessert. My dining partners loved it; I prefer haloumi more savory. We also tried the cauliflower fritters and the falafel, the ladder being the surprising weak link of the meal. The falafel were dry. There was no tahini or any other dipping sauce, so of course we dipped it in the delicious hummus. I would not order the falafel again, and I would probably skip the fritters as well. Fried food is not the strong suit here. At least not yet. I wanted to try the eggplant, but my dining partners did not. I think they could improve their falafel and perhaps offer some cauliflower, mushrooms, or other cooked vegetables. We also ordered cocktails that were made thoughtfully and presented nicely. I hope this restaurant stays open for a long time, because I will definitely be back and I will bring more people. I hope they continue to experiment with the menu. My party of three stopped in for lunch around 1 PM on a Friday. We were seated right away on Fiya's gorgeous, shady patio. The restaurant's interior also seemed nice, with open windows in front and a large wood fired oven in the center of the room. Our server, Christian, was friendly and attentive. I got the green falafel pita with fries on the side. Their homemade pita was delicious, as were the four generously-sized, herbaceous falafel stuffed inside. I wish the falafel had a crispier exterior, but what they lacked in texture was made up for in flavor. The fries were an interesting chip-fry hybrid, which I also enjoyed. I thought the portion size of this entree was generous for the $15 price. I really enjoyed this meal and would definitely visit Fiya again! Try to sit on the patio if you can. read more

We visited Fiya for its neighborhood restaurant week but ended up going with the regular menu instead. We ordered a ton of dishes, and only really loved 2 of them. With the others, it's like they were trying to reinvent the wheel, when the wheel works, and the wheel is good. We didn't think the extra additions to everything made it taste better. We found ourselves avoiding the dressing on the hummus and scraping the over-salted sauce off the squash. The date cake tasted like fish. We guessed the flavor may have been in the cast iron and absorbed into it. We are people who finish our food, and we couldn't. I don't know if we've left anything on the table like this uneaten and unboxed, but we did here. read more

I always leave Fiya with a full stomach wishing I had room for more! The menu is Levantine (seemingly Israeli inspired) and is full of eastern Mediterranean favorites. The menu is intended for sharing so keep that in mind while ordering. We sat on the beautiful well decorated patio which has a lovely garden, however, the interior is well appointed too. Khachapuri: reminds me of pizza. With cheese egg tomato sauce and an egg. Bread is really soft and fluffy. I added avocado to it and I liked the combo Falafel: has a dark green color.
