Overall a strange experience for me. Everyone was nice and polite but there were a few service issues. For instance, we had a group of 7 and 3 of us ordered items with steak. It was a Saturday night and someone had to come after we ordered to say that they only had one steak left in the restaurant. I'm not sure how they typically plan for the weekend rush, but I found this pretty odd. Another note is that they won't seat your full party until everyone arrives, which I've had happen at some other restaurants before too, but it's always disheartening to have to wander around the Wharf when I, as a guest of the man who made the reservation, have no control over when everyone else arrives. Second time here for breakfast. Definitely easier to get a reservation before hand. First time was a long waitlist especially on busy days at the wharf. Second we were sorted right away but it was just as they opened. I love the Quiche which comes with a spring salad with a light dressing. My boyfriend got the American breakfast which is eggs bacon and fingerling potatoes. The potatoes are nice and crispy. The croissants are absolutely delicious!! Ahhh Bistro Du Jour. As a Wharf resident, I walk by this joint fairly often--never intrigued enough by French cuisine to take the leap, but always curious if the food justifies the price. My wife and I took the plunge the weekend of Bloomaroo, which, in hindsight, wasn't the best choice given that they were swamped in the mid-morning for brunch. Regardless, our waitress was attentive, and this place has a really nice atmosphere. It's right on the water, and if the weather is nice, the patio is a perfect location to sip some coffee or do an extended brunch. We had ideas of picking something outside our comfort zone, but given the high traffic and the implicit insistence of our waitress, we both ordered the Plat Americain. It's just French for an American breakfast--eggs, bacon, potatoes, and a croissant. It wasn't anything special, but it was good. We ordered: 4*Bouillabaisse included Salmon, Mussels, Prawns, Fennel-Saffron Broth, and Grilled Baguette: seafood was cooked just right, very tender. The toasted bread was golden and great. The sauce was not heavy and the soup was mild. 3.5*Escargots De Bourgogne: it was pretty good but I just can't compliment the presentation. It wasn't served on a special plate like most French restaurants. It was served in a beat up iron pot. Bistro Du Jour is a great option at the Wharf, especially for happy hour. The happy hour price, variety, and quality is great. I visited recently at 5 PM for happy hour with a few friends. Bistro Du Jour does not have a bar inside, but they still do happy hour (3-6 PM M-F), which means you can get happy hour at all the tables and even make a reservation for it. This is a great benefit in an expensive area like the Wharf. The Wharf was pretty quiet, and there was only one other table there when we arrived. It got a bit livelier by the time we left at 7 PM. The happy hour menu includes 7 cocktails ($7-$8), 3 wines ($7-$10), 2 beers ($6), and 10 food items ($2-$17). The only beer option is Kronenbourg, so that's a little lame, but I'll forgive it for the great cocktail and food variety. We had the gougeres, French onion soup, escargots, burger, fries, and some cocktails and wine. Everyone was very pleased with the food. The gougeres were delicious and correctly cooked (they were not a few weeks ago, when my friend visited), the fries were tasty and crispy, the burger was excellent -- maybe my favorite burger in DC right now, especially for the price. It has the exact right balance of toppings and comes with the excellent fries. The escargot were also good and a great portion size, more than I expected. The French onion soup was also solid and is very cheesy. Wines and cocktails also good. The hostess/manager and our waiter gave us very good service. The waiter correctly memorized our orders, despite us being a little confusing. The manager stopped by just before happy hour ended to make sure we got a final order in. There was only one small hiccup when they were confused between the red and white wine, but quickly corrected this. Service was friendly and prompt. read more

Had a light dinner here on a weekday. Decided on a table inside which was great since everyone else was outside. We split several appetizers and each one was delicious in its own way. We started with the Macaron Au Foie. Wow- what a great combo of sweet (fig jam) and savory (chicken liver mousse). And all in a macaron! The macaron was a bit too chewy but otherwise perfect. The warm cheese puffs, Gougeres, were light and fluffy but packed with a cheesy flavor. Perfect! Lastly, the raw tuna was anything but boring - the flavors popped! I have walked by here so many times and I'm so glad we finally decided to stop. To be honest I'm often underwhelmed by the quality of the restaurants along the Wharf, and this was a very welcome change of pace. Pros: The food was simple, fresh, and very good. I had mussels and fries and really enjoyed my meal. Bonus: glass bottle diet coke ( see photo)--pretty hard to find at a restaurant! Others in my party had mussels, a burger and mac and cheese and everyone was satisfied with their food. They're also affiliated with Mah Ze Dahr so they have amazing pastry selection. Cons: Like every restaurant on the Wharf it gets really busy. I was also surprised that they don't have a lot of indoor seating--it really looks more like a coffee shop. So, you may have to wait a little while for a table. Bottom line: Definitely stop in if you're visiting the Wharf. Better than many of the other options I've tried in the area! read more

The sunny side up eggs, the sautéed mushrooms, and the mornay sauce were perfectly prepared and incredible. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. It is October as I write this and a bit cool now, so they have the outdoor section enclosed, so it's quaint and comfortable. Preferable I think, to eating in the restaurant on a bright sunny morning. I saw this place the previous night and wanted to come back and see how the pastries were. I ordered the chocolate cake, it's a plain croissant and something like a cream puff. I also ordered a basic double espresso. The chocolate cake was good but a little overly sweet and I felt it was pricey $8 for a small slice. The croissant is one of the best I've ever had. You could see each individual layer that they must have woven in as they created it. It was very light and also a crispy and crunchy at the same time. You had a remarkable flavor and I would go back again just for a croissant. The cream puff was all so very good. It was surprising that the inner filling wasn't overly sweet but it was a good surprising and made it more enjoyable. Had a very nice flavor on well with the espresso. Espresso is very good strong and smooth and pulled by hand. I like the way they served it in the small individual espresso cupped off to keep it hot. The staff is very nice and answered all my questions about the food and drinks I was ordering. I'll be back again when I'm in this area. read more

The food is absolutely amazeballs!!! I ALWAYS get the Croque Madam. It never fails, it is consistent. I am a frequent flyer to DC, the staff at one point recognized me and was able to expect my order (a little embarrassing for me tbh) BUT I will say, that's just a testament to how peaceful the little cafe is. You're able to sit around and read, do work, I brought my knitting on occasion. The service is consistent, the food is consistent, and the pastries...this is a must if you're on the wharf. read more

The Wharf is full of mediocre, overpriced restaurants and this is not an exception. I guess eat here if you happen to be at the Wharf because it's no better or worse than all the other tourist traps. But don't go out of your way because this city offers much better. The patio was nice and felt vaguely inspired by France. My server, Imani, was actually quite lovely - attentive, personable, able to answer questions. I told her I'm a cappuccino snob and told her how I wanted mine made and she endeavored to do so, so score a win for actual cappuccinos, which have become harder and harder to come by in the DMV. The issue was the food. Not a large menu and not a ton of vegetarian items. Also, their big thing was that they have pastries from Mah ze Dahr, which made up a huge portion of their menu (making this more of a pastry and coffee spot than an actual bistro, IMO). And as it happens, Mah ze Dahr is fabulous. I love Mah ze Dahr. Soooo.... why not just go to one of the three actual Mah ze Dahr bakeries in the DC area? My quiche florentine was from, you guessed it, Mah ze Dahr. But somehow I had to pay significantly more money to eat it at Bistro Du Jour. I also ordered the gougeres, and those were just a big gross no. Gougeres are supposed to be a cheese filled *puff* pastry. These were thick and doughy and flat, like they never rose because the dough was too heavy. They came out hot, but with that texture and flavor it was like just eating more of the crust from my quiche. They are infinitely better at Le Diplomat. read more

Bistro Du Jour is a charming spot, right on the Wharf. I needed to grab a quick bite before a meeting and was hoping to find a restaurant with wifi and something healthy on the menu. So, all I had was a Salade Verte. It was absolutely delicious. Beautifully presented, the plate handsomely loaded up with avocado, grapefruit, radish, and fennel. Perfectly dressed, not soaked, with a flavorful Red wine vinaigrette. It was well worth $14.50 and I didn't feel like I missed out by not adding salmon or steak. I'd love to try out dinner here. Maybe on my next visit to D.C. I liked sitting in the bright, enclosed area outside. The heaters did the job on quite the wintery day! Plus, the service was fantastic. oh my god do not get the french onion soup it's actually inedible, so salty and the bread is soaked to the point that it's limp, soggy, and barely more than just the main body of the soup with a slightly different texture i suspect, based on the quality of my father's waffles and the side bread (that i had to order to balance the saltiness of the soup), that this is a one-off issue with just their soup the service is just okay, i suspect it was busy when we came (around 11am-12pm) so maybe we got worse service than typical. nobody came to refill our water or check on us once, but the waitstaff were friendly and accommodating when i could get their attention. ambiance is great and good views! overpriced though, but maybe that's just DC. read more

Tried bistro du jour for the first time today. Food was decent but service was extremely lacking. I ordered a entree and a drink only to wait 30 minutes and have them tell me both were unavailable. I completely understand running out of a item, but this was not communicated in a timely manner. We were at the restaurant for 2 hours, waiting about an hour for each drink. Even the bathrooms didn't have toilet paper after several guests notified staff. Unfortunately we chose to close our check instead of waiting for our final items, as the disorganization by the staff and management caused a chaotic filled experience. read more
