Oh man where to begin- the food is below average and the service is incredibly disappointing. While I liked that they had a heated veranda for us to dine at with our pup, I was really upset with how frequently we had to go flag our server down and talk to the hostess about the lack of attention given to our table. It was frustrating always flagging someone down when the restaurant was not even slightly busy. Our moules frites, american burger and side of brussel sprouts all came out slightly cold, which led me to believe that it had been sitting for a while before our server even paid attention. While she was friendly, her and a number of the other staff would just hang out near the bakery items and kitchen chatting, completely oblivious to their tables. It was hard to enjoy the food because nothing came out hot and the moules frites was very underwhelming. Not even the french onion soup was good- it came out with thick cuts of onions and was poorly portioned and seasoned. All in all it was a huge disappointment and waste of money. My friends and I wanted to check out their restaurant week menu so we checked it out and the food was great! The soupe du jour was SO cheesy and amazing and just worth the wait!! The salmon had a great flavor and was plated beautifully. The cookie trio was great, the table favorite was the chocolate explosion - would definitely get it again! I tried mussels for the first time and will definitely be having mussels again because it was amazing - and of course, can't go wrong with fries! Our server was very nice and friendly and made our dining experience great. We sat on the outside patio which was covered and was heated very well, considering it was a cold day out. One note - they were unable to make any changes to the menu items for dietary restrictions - so one of us were unable to participate in restaurant week, but the restaurant did allow that person to not participate while the remaining party did! The server was rushing us and extremely rude. After we said that we needed a minute to decide, she did not comeback for 30 min. My partner had to call her over. After telling her my order, she told us that all the item we ordered were all out. Are you telling me that you are out of croissants and French onion soup as a French restaurant? Management please look into your staff and train people properly. We did not do anything rude to deserve to be treated so treated like a subhuman. Yummy french food in the Wharf! I really like this place for brunch and dinner. Nothing has been a disappointment yet as the decor of the restaurant is super cute, everyone is pretty friendly, and pretty good french food. Everything you need in a good restaurant! I love their coffee here because they serve La Colombe beans and it really does just taste better. Plus, I personally love that they have a homemade marshmallow cube that you can add to any drink. Food wise, the Oeufs Sue Le Plat is delicious! If you like a mushroom béchamel type sauce, you'll love this dish. It's savory goodness. The soupe du jour (French Onion Soup) is perfect. When we got seated, we were asked if we wanted bread to start of with. And my friend and I thought it was complimentary (but later I found out what the $4 was after I paid lol) We didn't receive the menu till we got our water and that's when we said yes to the bread and butter without realizing. Anyway, the food was good, but the service was ok. When my friend and I finished our meal, our waiter never came back for the check and we had to ask the host for it. That's why it was ok. Bistro du Jour ended up up being just the late lunch that I needed on a recent visit to DC. I was staying nearby and had passed the restaurant several times. Its large covered patio appealed to me as a perfect spot to people watch and grab a bite, and when I perused the menu by the entrance, the Salade Niçoise immediately caught my eye. I was promptly seated at an outdoor table in the shade, allowing me to stay cool on the hot afternoon. A friendly waiter brought me my menus and filled up my water glass, which he did a great job of keeping topped off throughout my meal. I stuck with my original plan and ordered the Salade Niçoise, despite being tempted by the Steak Frites for a hot second. I chose this restaurant because my partners trip to Paris this week was postponed due to COVID. With the French spirit in mind, I decided to try this new French restaurant. Keep reading, this may be a long post. 4/5: Location & Ambiance The restaurant is right on the water and is very beautiful inside. It is well decorated and really gives a Parisian vibe. I was told I would have waterfront views from inside, but I didn't. You can barely see it because the seat backs are so high. The entire patio was closed for service (that would be where the best views would be). 3/5: Service The service was soooooo slow. Slow to the point I was sincerely considering leaving. The restaurant was not full when we arrived for our reservation. We were sat immediately. We sat for over 5 mins before someone even said hello. We then were given water, and another 5-6 minutes later we were greeted by our server. That was ENTIRELY too long, not okay! Our server was nice, but not attentive. Cocktails were not refilled quickly enough. Had to wave him down twice to get what we needed. As a former waitress (you never let the customers drink get empty without inquiring if they want another and putting the order in). Being attentive also helps your check total get higher which increases TIP! 4/5: Food The food was delicious. I got Steak (medium) and Frites - so good! My partner ordered the coq au vin - it was good except if you have a preference of chicken pieces let your server know. She was given only dark meat and did not love that. Ok, now to wrap it up. I gave this place some grace because it's new, but for the issues I faced to not make this a 5/5 romantic dinner are due to ill-trained. Such a cute, romantic dinner spot located in the Wharf. We were served by the lovely Anthony S. He was such a delight to have as a server. Visiting DC for the weekend and we stayed at Royal Sonesta. After hanging out, we decided to come back to the hotel and try the restaurant. We wanted to sit outside because it was nice outside, but due to them only having 1 server, we had to sit inside. We sat down and the server came over and spoke to us. We ordered some mocktails, i had the Colette Garden and the wife had the Chapelet. They were ok, nothing special. We placed our order, we decided to share Gougères, Escargots and the Burger Américaine. We noticed after we ordered, everyone going to the bar after we sat down. My wife asked the manager was it happy hour, she said yes, but only at the bar. Upon entry nobody mentioned happy hour between the front desk or the hostess stand. The apps came out, the Gourgere was like a puff without any flavor. We ended up using the Gourgere to dip into the Escargot. The Escargot was decent, but the hazelnut was not it for us. The ratio for of Escargot versus the amount of bread was not evenly proportioned. The burger was the best thing we had, the front desk associates actually told us that was their favorite thing on the menu. Overall, not an awful experience, but to be a new hotel and restaurant, I feel like it could have been an overall better experience. We actually had brunch reservations the next day, but cancelled them after this experience. If we stay at the hotel again, we might try the restaurant for brunch. read more

I knew I wanted to try the chicken liver mousse as soon as I saw it on the menu. It doesn't look like anything special but the magic happens when you take that perfect bite: the lightly-toasted bread smeared with chicken liver mousse, a dollop of mustard seeds and fig jam, then topped with the pickled red onion and mini pickle. WOW...it was so good that we asked for extra toasted bread to fully enjoy the rest of the mousse and toppings. I got the salmon and I can't praise enough how well cooked it was. The exterior was nice and crispy which got me worried the inside would be over-cooked and dry but somehow it was cooked perfectly! The salmon was well-seasoned and the hash sitting under it was very tasty as well. I tried some of my friends steak and it was also cooked to perfection. I wish I examined the herb butter on top of the steak more before he spread it because I believe that was the secret to all its packed flavor. Unpictured is the dessert we also got: a slice of chocolate cake and a warmed slice of apple pie. The chocolate cake had so much depth and we were blown away by how it got more complex with each bite. Not your typical chocolate cake but the one warning is it is very rich. I am glad we were able to have brunch here last weekend while we were in town! When I was doing research prior to our trip, I saw this restaurant was new and had just opened so I made a reservation online for Sunday brunch. When we arrived, we checked in with the hostess and she escorted us to our table. This cafe is very intimate (aka: small) and so the tables are all very close together and there isn't much room to move around. When our server, Elisee was chatting with he table next to us, it was very easy to hear their conversation so it made it easier for me to know what I wanted to order based on what they were asking him about. Once he finished greeting his other table, he turned around and helped get us started on our drink orders. What a lovely server and so kind and friendly even though he was very busy! After we planed our drink orders, he gave us a few minutes to look at the menu and even made sure to fill up our water glasses. I was so excited for the waffle and my husband was ready for the American Breakfast even though he was also interested in a few other menu items. Our coffee was brought over quickly and Elisee brought me some cream and sugar too. Then we were both ready to place our orders. Once we were finished with ordering, we just enjoyed the atmosphere and I went to browse the pastry case. They were out of a few items and I did not see any Macarons either which made me sad. I don't know why, but I just assumed they would have some. They were not listed on the menu either. By the time I returned to the table, it was time to eat and our meals were being delivered. There was a mound of whipped butter on my waffle and a small bowl of the caramel apples on the side. I could not wait to eat everything. Even the breakfast plate my husband ordered looks so fresh and good. The potatoes on his plate were perfectly crisp just by the look of them. I enjoyed the waffle and while it was soft on the inside, it had a mice crisp outside when cutting into it. Perfection. Elisee came over to check on us a few times and when we were at the end of our meals, he came over again to take out plates. I asked for a to go Latte and my husband ordered a coffee to go. I also asked for the "pastry basket" to go, but I was informed that they did not have the banana bread in stock so I could not have the basket since they would not substitute. Instead, I opted to order a few croissants and a scone individually. I was really sad that the banana bread was gone, because I was really excited to try it. Elisee brought us our drinks and a bag of pastries and then we paid and were on our way. Such a great brunch with great service. I wish that we could have had more space at our table since the plates took up so much of the table and I wish there was a little more room in between tables. I think on a nice day, it will be great to visit and sit outside on their patio. I guess that means I'll nee to visit again in either the spring or summer?!?! I love Paris so I really enjoyed the vibe of this place. We came on a Sunday during Cherry Blossom Festival so the entire Wharf was very very crowded. However, we were able to get a table easily without reservation (probably because we came in at an odd hour - 3pm). We started off with the Pastry Basket, waitress kindly informed us that they were out of the scone so donut hole was substituted. Which worked out because the donut was very good! My friend got french onion soup (looked delicious and multiple tables around us got it) and the chicken liver mousse app. I went with mussels and fries, which I thought they would come out together but probably kept separate to prevent sogginess. We had an early dinner and the food was the best casual French food in this area. We had the mussels which I would highly recommend, there was also the fries and steak both cooked very nicely. The prices reflect the area. Although, the wine prices are too high and I don't like the tumblers they serve the wine in. Wine should have a flared shape at the bottom, go up a little higher and narrow towards the opening, a bit like a tulip. This allows the glass to have an aeration surface large enough so that one can swirl the wine and develop the aromas. A French restaurant should provide a glass option by request. Unfortunately, they were out of cinnamon buns around 4 pm. We decided to go the next morning to try them. I'm glad we did- so good. Visited for brunch on a Saturday. The restaurant is located inside of the Royal Sonesta Capitol Hill and reservations can be made via OpenTable. The restaurant is bright and open and has several seating areas including an outdoor patio. It is styled like a French bistro and is simply beautiful inside. The staff are courteous and engaging providing recommendations on the menu and I found our server very knowledgeable in helping us choose brunch entree options and drinks. The utmost customer service experience which really made brunch that much better. I had a burger and tried several appetizers with my favorite being the brûlée grapefruit (so unexpectedly light and good). There are several alcohol free cocktail options and the dishes were well presented and well portioned (see pics). Everyone in our party loved their entree meal option. Really wanted to like this place because they had a cute patio, is always packed, looked promising, right? Walked in and within a few minutes they had an outdoor table. We had come for the croissants but we were told "Nope. sold out." The waitress was a little short about it too. No apologies or other menu suggestions. I get they were probably asked this all day at a lot of tables... but it's not an out-of-the-box question to ask at a French restaurant where many of the things on the menu involve a croissant and they push the bakery items. Frankly, the waitress was pretty pushy when we weren't ready (after just finding out the thing we came for was no longer an option). The croissant was literally all my friend had wanted and last minute he ordered a glass of champagne & a black coffee. Literally, the server was just a touch impatient and hovering her hand over the handheld screen. It felt a lot like a timed thing when you want a kid to "just pick something already". Oat milk latte for me and Mussels, and the cheese puffs for the table. This was all put in to the POS handheld at the same time. The champagne came out first, then cheese puffs came out with the latte. I received my latte then had to ask the next time she came by for the sugar/sweeteners. There was no spoon for the latte. I figured it would take a bit more so I just used my butter knife, but I saw a couple of other tables had either a stirring straw, small spoon, or sugars for their coffees. A few minutes later, we eventually flagged the server back down since she forgot my friend's black coffee. We had to ask for that (which kind of put the server out). I was relieved I'd made the choice to not ask for the spoon or straw. At this rate it would have taken another 10-20 mins and I was still waiting for the mussels. 20 min wait or so on the mussels after the coffee/champagne/puffs. The fries that came with it were 5/5 on crispiness and seasoned correctly. There was no bread to dip with the mussels (which would have been a nice touch) or spoon. We both had forks though so not a total deal breaker. Noting- I've recently seen mussels on the menu other places in DC with 1-2 pieces of bread for $18. Du Jour's were $23. Some of this might just be location but other places on the wharf are a bit lower on mussels. Weak seasoning on the mussels. Nothing to write home about. Frankly this confirmed if I'm at the wharf, just walk on down to Rappahannock Oyster Bar (sit down) or the Jessie Seafoods (more casual) to get a lot more flavor for a comparable seafood dollar. You'll get checked on and have flavorful food & full glasses. Waited a bit more to be checked on. By that time the coffees and champagne were almost gone. One water refill on one of the glasses in the full time. No apologies for the wait or the understandable "Sorry we're a little understaffed today." At this point, our server was nowhere to be found. I get it might have been a busier day (or training new people) but most weekends are pretty packed at the Wharf. I'd think they have had time to work the logistics and staffing out by now? Finally flagged the server for the check. Took about 5 mins to get back to us with the handheld to get the bill. To be honest, I don't think I would ever go back. Du Jour has plenty of people in due to the location. After this experience it was confirmation there are too many other great restaurants/bars in the Wharf (or DC in general!) to alternatively go to (with wayyy better service and croissants!). Credit where it's due, Du Jour is part of the Knead hospitality group. The Gatsby near the Nats ballpark is under the Knead umbrella. Better food there (it's been a bit since I've been but the lavender chicken pot pie is incredible). Also, the people next to us literally got an omelette only to share and we ordered within 5 mins of each other. It was a busy day at the Wharf & Bistro Du Jour accommodated us within 20 mins of waiting for a table of four. The server was friendly, helpful & provided answers to our questions. I ordered the steak frites which the chef preferred medium rare but I ordered medium instead. The steak frites (7-9 oz steak based on size) came with a salad on the plate. Overall, I think the steak and fries were okay to me. The food wasn't flavorful or seasoned well. The steak had some localized areas of medium rare and was rubbery at those spots. The fries were plain but the salad was good with the sauce that was mixed with it. I personally think this is a good spot for breakfast/ brunch & getting dessert items. I ordered the crème brûlée with mixed berries and vanilla custard. I highly recommend this for the dessert, it was delicious! read more
