First I'll talk about our server. Older fella with a pony tail. He was as sour as a lemon. Would not smile at all. The service was also terribly slow. The apps were very good. The Mac and cheese and the sticky ribs were excellent. I had the sliders which were cold and greasy. My wife ordered the Hawaiian flatbread minus the pineapple and jalapeños. It came with lots of both. Our server didn't come by to see how everything was or ask if we needed anything. Terrible service. We will not be back. read more

Bistro Joe's is hit or miss! I was there yesterday with 4 others and it was okay. Our appetizers were great (Mac N Cheese, Brussel sprouts) The entrees were not so good. I ordered the sea bass and it was undercooked, my husband order the seafood pasta and it had no flavor. The short rib was extremely fatty. Always liked Bistro Joe's but now that they've got an awesome outdoor patio in their front parking lot it's even better!!! They have always had a patio in the front of their upstairs restaurant which is cramped and suffers from climate control issues. Not the new ground level patio which is open and airy. The crab stuffed mushrooms were the best I've ever tasted in life. The Brussel sprouts needed a little lemon, salt, and pepper and then it was great! The veggie lasagna was AMAZING! Can't remember the drink I had but Shawn was our waiter and he was fantastic! Sad they don't have brunch anymore probably due to understaffing since Covid. I will always have a soft spot for this place because I have so much love for it. Servers are always kind and helpful. Seating is available indoor, on their balcony and their new "igloos" outdoors. Food is always tasteful with many options to choose from but never too overwhelming. I get the oysters every time we come in and they always taste fresh and come with all the accompaniments you want. This time we also branched out and got the ahi tuna tacos which was the star of the meal. So good and crispy. Their Brussels sprouts are also great with flaky crispy texture. I opted to get vegetarian ratatouille sliders which were delicious and filling- I got the Parmesan truffle fries with them and they were a to the g amazing. Stopped for Happy hour on Friday. HH is Tues-Sun 3-5pm. They have a great outdoor patio setup out front, however we chose to sit inside on the upper patio. I got the cucumber gin gimlet and my friend got the margarita, both on the HH menu. My gimlet was the most refreshing summer drink- it made me wonder why I don't drink gin more often! for a snack, we got the sliders and hummus. Highly recommend both! My friend and I went to Bistro Joes on a Thursday night for some appetizers and drinks at the bar. Drinks and appetizers were fine as usual but what happened right before we left was very STRANGE! The bar and restaurant got busy-as expected on a Thursday night. My friend and I were going to order more drinks but the very nice bartender was busy. We decided to finish our drinks and leave. We asked for our bill as we were still drinking our drinks. The Hostess came up to us and asked us to give up our seats and move to the end of a community table (where a group was having a b day party) as a couple wanted our bar seats! In my experience bar seats are FIRST COME and FIRST SERVE! I have NEVER had a hostess kick me out of my seat and ask me to go sit somewhere else to accommodate new guests! Fabulous service and they take reservations! I had a special request and everyone from the hostess, Emily, to the GM, were extremely accommodating and very friendly. The food here is always delicious and they seem to have something for everyone. Great appetizers, the truffle fries are the bomb, great desserts and coffee served with warmed milk. Went there last night for dinner. Set outside on the new patio which we really loved! Even though it's on the side of Woodward it's still really nice to be sitting outside. I like all the greenery and umbrellas they sit out with lively music playing. We shared the chefs favorite lamb shank it comes with a side of mashed potatoes green beans and a few turnips.. The green beans were a little dry but the lamb was flavored & baked to perfection and the huge portion of mashed potatoes was delicious. We also ordered the mac & cheese which was wonderful it has a mix of five different cheeses so you get a lot of different flavors it was super creamy and the penne noodles were just the right tenderness not mushy at all. read more

My husband and I came on a Saturday evening at 7 and got seated at the bar right away (luckily). We were surprised how busy this place was for being inside a grocery store! We had a great experience from the talkative & attentive staff at the bar to the wide selection of drink options. We tried a peanut butter porter from Bells (AMAZING) and a glass of $8 Cab with a generous pour. We order two servings of fries (no shame) - one truffle and one regular. I personally like the regular fries because they come out with a crunchier texture. The reasoning behind 4 stars instead of 5 is that the menu seems slightly over priced. So to start- not good when you have a giant sign that says you're doing happy hour that shows off Woodward Avenue and then you don't have a happy hour. We stayed anyways because we were in really great moods but that did not last long. Ordered the Brussels, dozen oysters, both which were fine. Then the problems happened. Found a one inch hair in our Mac n cheese. Sent it back and told we would be made a new one. Started eating our sliders, which come with caramelized onions, I found a FOUR INCH LONG CURLY BLACK HAIR ~BURIED~ IN THE CARAMELIZED ONIONS! My husband told the manager discretely after they tried to continue to serve us Mac n cheese and we had to tell them we were no longer hungry and actually felt sick, they tried to tell my husband that there were no cooks with hair like that in the kitchen. I work in restaurants, I know there doesn't need to be a cook in the kitchen with that hair type because you prep the onions and the cheese sauce IN ADVANCE. Talk to your prep cook about this issue. This manager didn't understand that and tried to act like we were pulling a fast one, even though I asked to be charged a dollar after all of this to leave a tip on because I know my fellow servers/cooks/etc are suffering right now and he didn't even honor that. This manager is so tone def he didn't even let me tip a totally professional waitress during a pandemic when I REQUESTED TO DO SO. Shame on this manager, he does not understand the kitchen he works with, how to listen to guests wishes, or how to take care of his FOH staff. One of my fav places, especially for brunch. They have an amazing atmosphere and staff. Outstanding food too! We always get an order of the scones (best scones ever and fig jelly!!) I think we've tried everything on the brunch menu and everything is so yummy and tasty. The French toast, bistro salad, burger and breakfast pizza are some of my many favorites. They also have AMAZING dark coffee! They have mimosas, a full bar and bloody Mary bar. They are usually busy for brunch on the weekends so call ahead or make a reservation. I was one of the few that didn't know about the dine in option at Papa Joes. Their happy hour is very popular but our group came for dinner. I hear they have a popular brunch but don't know if that's back yet. We had grilled octopus which was tasty and the vegetable lasagna was good. Steaks I was told were good though some in our group weren't thrilled with the burgers and felt overall it was a bit too pricey for them. the wine options were popular with our group. This is considered a bit of an upscale option so consider the menu and prices as such. Ordered a main dish and asked to not have an ingredient that I was allergic too in the dish, when they brought it out it was covered in the ingredient I'm allergic too and the server seemed PISSED I sent it back, scoffed when I said I needed a new one because I can't eat it, came back and blamed everyone, didn't ask how it was, didn't care. First time going to this establishment . Went with my GF and some friends , I ordered lamb bolognese and my girlfriend got the chicken Milanese . The food surprisingly came out quick , however you would think it would be hot . The food was cold , and disappointing. My lamb meat ball tasted as if the meat was frozen for over 2 weeks . The pasta was sub par and had minimal flavor . My girlfriends chicken was burnt and lacked of taste. The potatoes she received were salty and uncooked . Bravo Papa Joe's! What a brilliant idea to have a bistro in the loft space of the grocery store. The restaurant is perfect with minimal design. Happy Hour from 3pm - 6pm is one of the best deals in Birmingham. The Asian BBQ ribs are out of this world. The truffle fries, oysters, mac n cheese and bone marrow are a must try. The drinks are splendid too. I recommend the Dark & Stormy, Moscow Mule and Pear w/ginger Martini. The service is good and the food comes out quickly. I can't believe it's taken me SO long to dine here. I shop here every other week for groceries but forgot about the Bistro. Well not anymore! Second time I've been in there for happy hour and the bartender I guess his name is Q or something, was by far the rudest bartender I have encountered, in years. My first drink order, it was red wine. The guy spills the red wine over my glass onto the counter and doesn't even bother to wipe all the red wine that I'm sitting on with my white shirt in front of me. Let alone to even get his attention for other restaurants in the bar to get service/bills.. I clean the wind myself he didn't even bother grab the dirty napkins. When I ask for a Pinot noir, the guy try to pour it in my Sauvignon blanc, and I told him no I don't like to mix my wines, and literally comes back and pours the Pinot noir in my cab glass. I was very underwhelmed with the food here. I have had carryout in the past that was great but for some reason last nights dinner was just ok. We ordered truffle fries and the fried brussel sprouts as appetizers. The fries had no truffle flavor whatsoever. Just a heavy dusting of parmesan cheese. The fries were also kind of soggy. The Brussels sprouts were very good though, we ordered a second plate of them. We shared a few small plates and entrees between the 5 of us. The fish tacos were good, not great. The kale salad was also just okay. The mac and cheese was not mixed well and some part of it were watery and others had too much thick cheese seized up in it. The bistro steak was good, nice zip sauce on the side. The sticky ribs were good but had fat still on them. Overall, just an okay meal. Nothing too memorable or worth going back for. Came here for a date night now that the world is slightly opening up. We have a 6 week old so we wanted a place with reservations. We have been here for brunch but never for dinner and we're sadly disappointed. For dinner we ordered the Caesar for two and a flatbread since we couldn't find something else that sounded worth the price. The salad was good and the flatbread had good flavor, but was pretty small to share. I used to love this restaurant, and came here almost every weekend. From when it opened to now, many things are different - and not for the better. After a few mishaps to say the least, my friends and I decided to give this place another try. It has been well over a year since my last visit. We sat on the balcony, which is my favorite spot in the restaurant. It's a great place to sit for hours with friends, but they need to do something about the windows. There was some glue remnants on the window, and it just looked dirty, sloppy and old, which was surprising. The food and service was good. I always ordered the spicy tuna tacushi, which was delicious. The presentation wasn't as perfect as it used to be, but the taste was still there. A few of my favorite dishes are the sliders (really cute presentation), the bistro salad and the lamb sandwich. The prices are a little steep, but it's Birmingham. The donut dessert is not the same at all. It used to be one of my favorite desserts, but when I tried one during my last visit, I was really disappointed. It was tough, and too crispy. Nothing at all as I remembered. Still a great place for a group of people since they have a little bit of everything on the menu. If the restaurants I like were in food pyramid, Bistro Joes would be the base. It's a staple, a go to, and a necessity for my health and well being. The service is always prompt and friendly, the manager is extremely professional and proactive, and the bartenders are consistent at producing excellent cocktails. I've had so many more surprise great moments with the service here than I have ever had mishaps. The food is excellent, the desserts are worth it, and I really enjoy the atmosphere. The bottom line: Bistro Joe's offers the best happy hour in metro detroit. I recommend a mint julep and oysters, but you truly you can't go wrong with anything here. read more

I don't have much to compare it too though, only tried two other places. The grits have so much flavor which I enjoy because I don't like plain grits and the shrimp, yum. I love everything else on the happy hour menu also! The Brussels sprouts also delicious, like how it's shaved and they shave cheese on top of it, what a plus. Escargot always coming fresh, only place I tried escargot I believe, other than that, I make curry snails at home but I enjoy it here, typical garlic and herb. After telling the server who told the chef that I could not have garlic, my salmon was cross-contaminated with garlic. I got really sick. I spoke to the manager on two separate days who told me it was probably cross-contamination and was unapologetic about it. I felt that I should have been warned that this could happen. The brunch at Bistro Joe's is very good. Some things are better than others, such as the "Oh my lard" plate and the crab cake Benedict which are delicious. The french toast is absolutely phenomenal and we have gotten it each time! Trust me you will love it. I like that you can get an oyster platter with your breakfast. Oh and make sure you try the lemonade they make there, it's addicting. The market downstairs is cool because they have a loooot of samples offered on weekend mornings! I'm just posting a quick update to my earlier review. My wife and I went back in to Bistro Joe's. We enjoyed it more than we enjoyed our first experience. 1. Moorish Eggplant - Labne - Harissa - Boondi This is a fun one illustrating Jacques Van Staden's global concept. We're playing in Mediterranean territory here with North Africa playing a huge role. A dash of India gets thrown in. My wife and I really enjoyed that one. 2. Dates - Bacon - Almond - Tamarind We've seen and tasted dates and bacon before, but I don't recall having almond and tamarind with them. I have to say it was a great update of what could have otherwise been cliché. The tamarind really complemented the date very well. The acidity of the tamarind played really well with the sweetness of the dates and the saltiness of the bacon. We've seen dates and bacon done so poorly. Thankfully, Bistro Joe's did it well. We enjoyed that one a lot. 3. Duck Duck Goose The special for the evening was the Duck Duck Goose. Duck leg confit, duck breast (roasted?), and seared foie gras were served with a waffle with a light maple syrup, spinach, mashed potatoes and a duck jus. In the waffle, IIRC, there was some mild cherry flavor and a beautiful star anise note. We thought this dish was excellent. We were really sold on Bistro Joe's after this dish. Once the food arrived all four of us were disappointed. The steak was over cooked, the Brussels sprouts were undercooked, and the hamburger was missing toppings.
