That restaurant was shuttered and closed, despite it being only 8pm on a Saturday. So I went next door and found Chenando's. The prices looked a little steep, but I was hungry and ready just wanted some soup, which was on the appetizer menu. Despite the heat, I love soup and find that soup in Mexico has never let me down. I went in and was seated immediately with a smile. I only brought a little cash with me, because even though this area feels very safe, I was a solo lady with intermediate Spanish, at best, at night, in a new place. This place did not take credit, much like almost every other place in Puerto Vallarta. I asked if they could make the tortilla soup with chicken, since I wanted to get at least a little protein, and the waiter happily obliged. You guys. Holy shit. I come to Mexico at least three times a year, trying out different cities. This might have been the best meal I've had in all of those trips. It was easily the best tortilla soup of my life. The chunks of avocado were so soft and had absorbed the flavor of the soup. They melted like butter in my mouth. THEN there was the bread! I don't even know what it was. Sort of like Hawaiian rolls, but toasted. Freaking awesome. If I wasn't so full from the soup, I would have stuffed all three giant pieces in my face. I could only do one. They asked how it was and I announced that this was the most delicious soup of my life. The two other tables had couples dining who enthusiastically agreed that the food here is next level. One couple from the Netherlands said they come here three times a year. From the Netherlands. To eat here, specifically. Yeah, I could see that. Altogether, my bill was 155 pesos, just under $9 USD. The most sincere welcome I received assured me I was in the right place. ALL who worked there were super friendly, patient and helpful with choosing my meal options. I had the best spicy margarita made only there and I don't usually eat or drink anything spicy. I had 2 quesadillas with chicken and steak with 4 different sauces and vegetables. I ordered a traditional Old Fashioned made with Maker's Mark. It was made perfectly, although I would have liked to see a better selection of bourbons. Maker's Mark was the best bourbon available, but fortunately, they made a very good Old Fashioned with it. My wife ordered one of their specialty cocktails, the Maracuyá, made with tequila, passion fruit, lime juice, and agave syrup. It was refreshing and a perfect cocktail for a warm evening. We started dinner with their namesake salad. It was a generous portion--large enough to be a meal on its own--and our wonderful waiter wisely suggested that we split it. It came with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, apples, pineapple, carrots, walnuts, and goat cheese, topped with a passion-fruit vinaigrette. After a hot day in the sun, it was incredibly refreshing. For my main course, I ordered the ossobuco, a slow-roasted pork leg with a Marsala wine reduction served over mushroom risotto with vegetables. The flavor was very good, but I would have preferred the slippery skin to have been removed before cooking. We arrived about 30 minutes before sunset and watched the sun slowly dip below the horizon while a live violinist played along with recorded music. The menu was pretty varied for such a small place and the wait staff were very friendly, although no one spoke English or at least well enough to communicate much to them. No problem, we picked out some tacos. I had the Pollo Taco, a beef taco and an asada taco. All three were very good and would highly recommend stopping in for a quick bite. The prices were spot on with about $2 per Taco andthey weren't skimpy so that was a very good value. After lunch we were brought a shot of Kahlua and that really hit the spot.

Then as the night went on, a man and woman started fighting and wound up ripping each others clothes off. I and a few other attendees had to be the ones to get involved! No police presence at all. We did not finish our meal as it felt unsafe when they were fighting. We left our steaks and drinks half finished. There was no offer of a partial refund at all. "Oh that's a public part of the beach" is all they could say. What a waste. My children were exposed to this, we did not finish our food or drinks, and still had to pay the full $300 tab. Aside from this, the food was OKOKOK. MID-tier at best! Steak ($1,100 pesos) was tough. Tuna Poke was a terrible attempt and not tender at all. Oysters were extremely salty (not handled properly). AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Server was cool, and funny, he gets the 1 star, but management is terrible and unfriendly. Refuse to accept accountability or to offer ways to make amends. GO ELSEWHERE!
