There are no menus. After the waitress seated us and poured waters, later came back and says any questions with the menu? I was like yeah I need one. She's like oh you can scan this and order on your phone. This is a sit down restaurant. It's this table stand thing with a QR code on it, literally the size of a dime. I would expect my iPhone 12 to scan it but it didn't. Ok so no menu. I asked for a real menu and got one. There are no pictures and it's food you've never heard of, so I wasn't even the least bit excited. And she also said this had only a few items on it. The phone menu has everything we offer. But was told I have to order online. WTF!? The other three tables had been there before us and they had no food. I wasn't about to continue this clusterF. Why do I have to scan an un-scannable QR? Rarely give 5 star reviews, but the food here was absolutely amazing, the ginger tea was REAL ginger tea (chunks of ginger and all) and the staff was amazing. Boyfriend got the wings and he said it was some of the best wings he's ever eaten. The sesame dressing for the salad was pure perfection and the tempura avocado was fried perfectly, wasn't overpowered by the tempura batter, so an initial crisp with perfectly ripe avocado underneath. How many times have I used perfect or a version of it. The staff was super attentive. If I lived in Portland, I'd frequent here more often. Also, the price was good. Suda and her team are fantastic. Everyone is dealing with staff shortages and Suda does an amazing job at bridging any gaps in staffing. The food is excellent, we have been multiple times and worked our way through a lot of the menu and have been very happy with most of the tapas. Have been back to Bites many times and tried most of the items on the menu. Here and Out-AZA-Blue are the only competitors for miles around if you are looking for something out of the ordinary. Ramen and the salmon Fish and Chips are my personal favorites. Anything off of the appetizer menu is worth it. 3 1/2 but not 4. Stopped in on a dreary afternoon while vacationing in western Oregon. We were the only customers. This is a small place and the decor is kind of cold, but the menu has nice options. We were greeted and seated quickly enough but another patron came in trying to talk to the manager/owner about reserving the whole restaurant for some event.. she totally dominated his time for over 10 minutes maybe more and he was also our server. He was trying to make our iced teas but he didn't seem to know how to break free from her constant questions and rambling - so we just waited.. they were only a few feet away from us and we could hear every word.. just frustrating that as the only customers we waited a very long time for service. We had the Korean tacos and one of the burgers. Both had great flavor and were served at proper temperature. There was a lot of variety on the menu. Overall it was a 3 1/2. I'm sure this place is popular with the university crowd in town and there seems to be a huge emphasis on alcohol here. We didn't try any. So the only criticism really is not managing the interruption from another patron enough to serve us efficiently. Hopefully that doesn't happen too often. read more

I'm very sad to report the new owners have ruined one of my favorite restaurants in Forest Grove. The quality control of the dishes and the portions have negatively changed. The server doesn't even know what's on the menu when we call in our order, terrible. I estimate Bites will be closed in 6 months. Came back to Bites one week later, a new Friday tradition I think! Once again did not disappoint. We had the clams again which have an amazingly light and flavorful broth, along with the ahi slices (6 pieces, good value in my opinion). Crab cakes (4 that come on spoons, a perfect bite with yummy spicy aioli) and kimchi fries. If you go the tapas route at Bites I advise getting a few different things some with meat or that are more substantial to ensure a well balanced meal. Very disappointed. We were excited to try this place and came in almost an hour before closing and specifically asked when the kitchen closed. Ordered promptly and paid via their QR menu platform, then were told afterwards they cannot make anything that required boiling... AKA, no pasta, ramen, etc., which is the entire reason we came. Average food, and slightly above-average environment The waiter always seemed like he had to be somewhere else while at my table. And the service was intermittently attentive. Cocktail (Manhattan) was very good, and glass of wine was a nice pour and good value. I'd be surprised if they remain in business long term. The menu is odd, and the food didn't live up to its Asian Fusion billing. I liked how (next day) they sent an email for 20% off my next visit. Nice touch there. I'd recommend the restaurant have another chef come in and make some adjustments to their menu (the actual plastic menu) plus adding / deleting some dishes. While searching Yelp for a nice place to have lunch in Forest Grove, I came across Bites and the menu intrigued me. "Asian Fusion" is not always done well but Bites is the real deal. The menu has tapas, ramen, salads, burgers, fish & chips, kimchi fries, all done well. Inside, the restaurant is kinda rustic; lots of wood with a giant chalkboard above the kitchen with all kinds of "foodie" sayings & drawings written on it. They have a very nice full bar and a great sake menu too. We were greeted at the door and seated immediately. There was a very large group seated at a big community table in the center of the dining room and by the time we left, the place was fairly full. The whole place isn't very big and the noise level was just right. We started with two nice glasses of Oregon Pinot Gris and an appetizer of fried calamari ($8): dusted calamari tubes lightly fried & served with a delicious house made kimchi tartar sauce. Amazing! For my entrée I chose the Ahi salad (forgot the price): perfectly seared fresh Ahi tuna, Hass avocado, fresh spring mix served with a tasty wasabi ranch dressing. My husband ordered the Donburi: you choose between Kalbi ribs, spicy pork (pork belly) or lemongrass pork, he chose the lemongrass pork, garnished with green onions & sesame seeds, served over a bed of white rice with a side of kimchi. Except for the pork being a little on the fatty side, the dish was excellent. Service was friendly. Prices are reasonable. Definitely going back again for lunch when in Forest Grove. read more

This place has a great menu with a variety of really yummy food, so delicious! We had the parmesan green beans, salmon tacos, ben's burger, k town tacos, a chicken burger with bacon, and chicken tacos. The food came out quickly, was hot and tasty. I especially liked my salmon tacos, they were flavorful without being salty, and the sauce was the right amount. I'll explain, go to the table, scan the code, then struggle through their ordering process via your phone. Advance pay, including tip and then they should bring your food to the table. My hubby and I found this place by happenstance. We live in Hillsboro and made the conscientious decision to head WEST out to Forest Grove for half the driving time, then driving in to downtown-Pdx would be. It was a fairly spontaneous decision, and didn't do a whole lot of research, the place that we initially picked out ended up being way too popular and busy, and more of a true wine bar with a live band than a Restaurant. So, we just walked towards "downtown" and then the next place that caught our eye was Bites!! The graphics and design is what caught my eye initially, I loved the aesthetics of it. I also loved the inside, We were there a 'lil after 8pm on a Friday night and it was definitely Hoppin. They had a couple of big groups finishing up. The person who greeted us initially, estimated about 15 to 20 minute wait time. So, we put our name on the list. Probably about 5 to 10 minutes later a different server grabbed us and escorted us to our seats. I like that no surprises type of up-frontedness, but sometimes it won't quite be as long as you imagined. And, I honestly can't emphasize this enough, I loved the design of the inside. It seems so warm and welcoming. The tables almost gave the appearance of being "family style". It just had the style of southern hospitality, but with healthier (not -southern-style) food! You have to go there to eat, just to experience the ambience and the design, I know I don't really know Forest Grove that well, but I think this design is pretty progressive for Forest Grove! Check it out! Also, if anyone ever reviews/writes or otherwise tells you the service here is slow, or that the servers aren't attentive to you, you know they are Lying! --Or maybe Bites had a rare off night? is possible too, to be fair. *sorry, I don't mean to call your friend a liar. =) But, yeah just to put it in perspective, I didn't have my abacus with me to count, but I believe 4 different people/servers came up to us in the first 5 minutes!! And, they were very regular/attentive through out the evening, so I would find it hard to believe if someone had a hard time getting the attention of a server. And, their drink menu was very impressive! Their cocktails did look fun, but my hubby and I stuck to wine/beer. He had a pint of an IPA from Waltz Brewing. And, I had a farmhouse red from David Hill Winery. I think they did a really great job selecting super-local beers and wines, that was a nice touch. And, both David Hill and Waltz Brewing are very high quality Oregon-alcohol-establishments already, so I'm sure that made the decision to stock them easy. The only downside was that it was not posted up front the cost of the beer and wine, we didn't ask up front either. But, we lucked out they were very reasonable/market rates and not outrageous. So, that was nice to Not be surprised on that aspect either! Before I even start about the food, I just would like to give Bites! a compliment for their burger menu. I honestly think it's cool that they don't force a "veggie" burger just to be obligated. They had 4 different beef burgers on their menu, and that is what they were specializing in, otherwise there are other vegetarian options on the menu to choose from. As someone who has been a vegetarian (pescetarian) for 15 years I have had a lot of soggy, unsatisfactory garden burgers over the years. So, I think it is respectable that they aren't going to "Force it" Regardless of if their was veggie burgers or not, there was still plenty of delicious things on their menu for me and my hubby to choose from. We started with an appetizer --the DYNAMITE NACHOS- crispy corn tortilla w/tempura shrimp, et al. Nachos is not something my hubby and I usually order or make at home, but these were a special treat and prepared really well. There was a lot of veggie (+seafood) appetizers that looked very appetizing, so the decision was tough. But, I'm glad we will have a lot of variety of ideas for next time to try!! And, then for the entree, I ended up ordering the ahi tuna salad. WOW!!!! WOwza. Yeah, the tuna was OFF THE HOOK. Prepared to perfection, I will definitely order this one again. ANd, it was perfectly complimented with the avocado and the carrot-ribbons. My hubby ordered the Teriyakidon with teriyaki tofu, and that was really tasty as well. Also another reviewer mentioned the small portion size, and they are probably fair to critique that. But, on the other hand I thought the portions were ideal! And, realistic how a "healthy" diet should be instead of the American-overeating-"life"style tends to be. But, this was the first time in a long time where I was able to finish my whole meal, and not take leftovers or have my hubby help me finish it. I don't normally leave a review, especially a bad review. But this restaurant is too much to handle, totally unacceptable. First of all, I came in on Wednesday night (around 7:20, ordered around 7:30), there were 4 tables in total (one of which has finished their meal so basically 3 tables including myself, alone). I ordered a garlic tonkatsu ramen. If y'all know or have a slight clue of how to make ramen, you know the broth was prepared a long time back. Technically this ramen would only take 5 mins, max, to make - it took them 30 mins plus I have to "ask" for it. Secondly, rather than chit chatting with your co-worker, the server should at least update the customer where is his/her food; instead of having the customer ask for an update. The restaurant was only at 15% occupancy..... Third, when I got my noodle, WTF the chopstick was stick into the noodle. You don't know Asian also has table manner? Not to mention the one of the chopstick was upside down sticking into the noodle. I AM IN A RESTAURANT!? I gave her a weird look staring at the chopstick, and of course the waitress did not notice a damn thing. Like, who cares man? Fourth, the noodle potion was very little, almost like a kids potion (to be fair, I took 2 bites from the noodles). The broth is far less than the noodle. Like if you eat a proper ramen noodle soup, the soup usually covers the ramen noodle, or any noodle soup you can name. Understood that this restaurant is only a fusion restaurant, things like chopsticks stick upside down into the soup handed to the customer, or ramen without enough broth, are within the "fusion" norm, i guess..... Needless to say, I still gave the server 20% tips because I too used to work in restaurant before, and I know it is not easy to make money. But please, at least get your shit right...Delivering food, anyone with an able-body can do, but the attitude is the most important. 20 out of 10 would not recommend this restaurant to anyone... read more

It's Friday night date night! This is the night of the week where Wife N. and I either cook an elaborate fine meal at home, or head out to a restaurant and try something new. Tonight was the latter experience. Friday night, 7:15pm, we arrived at Bites in Forest Grove. The place was about 20% full, so we were seated immediately and began perusing the menu selections. We started with a drink order: Wife N got an Old Fashioned and I ordered the Oakshire Amber on tap. The Old Fashioned was very bitter-heavy. A good mix should highlight the whiskey, and support it with flavors of orange peel and bitters. This was all bitters, to the point the whiskey was absent. The Oakshire Amber is an excellent beer. We started with appetizers of Tuna Tataki (seared, sliced, with Ponzu) and Tuna Tartare. The Tuna Tataki had excellent flavor. The texture was tender and everything was nicely balanced. On flavor, this app was firing on all cylinders. However, there were only 6 razor-thin slices in three stacks on the plate. Under only the most generous circumstance could this be called six bites of tuna. This was easily a $4 appetizer squeezed into an $8 price tag. It needed at least double that quantity, or more, or a cute side of its own, or something. The Tartare wasn't a Tartare. It was cubed and most closely resembled a poke. The tuna was over-cooked (if left in soy, raw tuna will cook on its own, even in the fridge) and too firm. The flavors were a little lacking. It had one thin slice of gari (ginger) on top, and taken all with the ginger the flavors came alive. But it was one shot of ginger. It really needed either a citrus/yuzu leaning or more ginger throughout the dish. Get some acid into that thing! Quantity was acceptable for the $8 price. For the meals Wife N ordered the Teriyaki-don Chicken (teriyaki chicken, rice and veggies, $10) and I ordered the Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen ($10). The Teriyaki sauce was extremely thick and over-reduced to the point where all the flavors became sharp and too bold. Very salty and garlicky, almost bitter, but unfortunately any other background flavors that should have been in there were overshadowed by the over-reduction. The veggies were clearly frozen machine-cut. Broccoli was mush. Carrots were corrugated-sliced and Wife N didn't even try them. We've had far better teriyaki-don at the average mall for $7.50. My Tonkotsu was a very basic pork broth. None of the complex nuances that I'd expect in a good tonkotsu were there. It wasn't offensive; it just wasn't by any means memorable. Two thin slices of pork. Small bowl. Noodles were fine. I've had better ramen just about anywhere for $9 and twice the quantity of better ramen for $13. The service was actually fantastic; the wait staff was great and Johnny-on-the-spot. Total bill: $50 plus tip---which makes this place VERY expensive for the quality of food we got. Now that this restaurant has passed its initial rocky month (that most restaurants go through) I'd expected them to have a bit better bearings on the food. Great place to enjoy Dinner and Drinks with friends. We arrived early, and their was only one person waiting on all tables. The services was still good.. Yeah.. had to wail a little for drinks, but the same guy waiting on us was pouring out drinks too. Lemon Grass Volka? was good.. The Tapas +++++ Cucumber Salad, Seoul Dumplings, Parmesan Green Beans, Kimchi Fries, Street Tacos where the Crews favorites. 50/50 on Tempura Avocado.
