It's Friday night date night! This is the night of the week where Wife N. and I either cook an elaborate fine meal at home, or head out to a restaurant and try something new. Tonight was the latter experience. Friday night, 7:15pm, we arrived at Bites in Forest Grove. The place was about 20% full, so we were seated immediately and began perusing the menu selections. We started with a drink order: Wife N got an Old Fashioned and I ordered the Oakshire Amber on tap. The Old Fashioned was very bitter-heavy. A good mix should highlight the whiskey, and support it with flavors of orange peel and bitters. This was all bitters, to the point the whiskey was absent. The Oakshire Amber is an excellent beer. We started with appetizers of Tuna Tataki (seared, sliced, with Ponzu) and Tuna Tartare. The Tuna Tataki had excellent flavor. The texture was tender and everything was nicely balanced. On flavor, this app was firing on all cylinders. However, there were only 6 razor-thin slices in three stacks on the plate. Under only the most generous circumstance could this be called six bites of tuna. This was easily a $4 appetizer squeezed into an $8 price tag. It needed at least double that quantity, or more, or a cute side of its own, or something. The Tartare wasn't a Tartare. It was cubed and most closely resembled a poke. The tuna was over-cooked (if left in soy, raw tuna will cook on its own, even in the fridge) and too firm. The flavors were a little lacking. It had one thin slice of gari (ginger) on top, and taken all with the ginger the flavors came alive. But it was one shot of ginger. It really needed either a citrus/yuzu leaning or more ginger throughout the dish. Get some acid into that thing! Quantity was acceptable for the $8 price. For the meals Wife N ordered the Teriyaki-don Chicken (teriyaki chicken, rice and veggies, $10) and I ordered the Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen ($10). The Teriyaki sauce was extremely thick and over-reduced to the point where all the flavors became sharp and too bold. Very salty and garlicky, almost bitter, but unfortunately any other background flavors that should have been in there were overshadowed by the over-reduction. The veggies were clearly frozen machine-cut. Broccoli was mush. Carrots were corrugated-sliced and Wife N didn't even try them. We've had far better teriyaki-don at the average mall for $7.50. My Tonkotsu was a very basic pork broth. None of the complex nuances that I'd expect in a good tonkotsu were there. It wasn't offensive; it just wasn't by any means memorable. Two thin slices of pork. Small bowl. Noodles were fine. I've had better ramen just about anywhere for $9 and twice the quantity of better ramen for $13. The service was actually fantastic; the wait staff was great and Johnny-on-the-spot. Total bill: $50 plus tip---which makes this place VERY expensive for the quality of food we got. Now that this restaurant has passed its initial rocky month (that most restaurants go through) I'd expected them to have a bit better bearings on the food. This place is really nice and cute. They have small plates as well so it is perfect size for little extra food or when you only want to eat a small portion. The price is pretty high for the amount and taste of food. The food isn't bad but you can pay same price for better food in Hillsboro or Portland area. My family and I really wanted to try something new, so we tried out Bite. The atmosphere was on point and we found the bars small selection of liquors to be clean and confident. We were also excited to see a menu of diversity in palettes. There was something for the meat lover, the vegetarian, as well as those looking for something of a Spanish/ Asian/ American mix up. Which actually was perfect because we have varied wants in this family. We ordered the Lemongrass Press which sounded innovative and unique. Unfortunately it was extremely watered down lemongrass flavored 7 up. The Jalapeño poppers had potential until we found it to be undercooked. Same with the Calamari. The flavor had potential until I bit further into my piece which was cold in patches, as well as extremely slimy. The breading literally fell off with residue from the actual squid. Upon receiving my Ahi Tuna Salad, i found the dressing to be hidden under the actual salad (which was noted by the server as intentional) so essentially you have to toss your own salad, and we all know that's never fun. After mixing it all up, and after multiple bites/ chances, I was disappointed to say the wasabi dressing was extremely overpowering with an over abundance of this dressing which resembled a salad dressing soupish salad. Fortunately the parents liked an over abundance of dressing and wasabi, so they took it and tolerated it. What ticked me off about the situation was the fact that the server saw I had given my entree to the others in my party leaving me sipping on my watered down drink, and during his visit of refilling waters and taking plates, he didn't bother or really care to ask if I wanted anything to replace the soupy salad. So I had to kind of call out to him as he tried to scuffle off without any extra work to appease my experience. Needless to say, we found the atmosphere and concepts of this establishment to be merely all icing with no actual cake under all the dress up. We appreciated the ideas that they wanted to accomplish, but they just couldn't pull off such concepts. Most likely suited for the patrons within this college student town. read more

First time to this unassuming establishment in Forest Grove. We drove 35 minutes and were absolutely floored by the food. My wife and I were so delighted with our meal. Started with Korean boneless wings which were a nice combination of crispy chicken tenders with just the right amount of a gochuchang based sauce. We also tried the Parmesan tempura green beans and the tempura avocado. Hands down... the tempura avocado is a must try!!! Loved 'em! Incredibly, we still had room for entrees... and they did not disappoint. My wife had the Cacio e Pepe with chicken. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicious!! I had the spicy ramen which had an amazing super-flavorful broth (better than anything I have had recently in PDX), nice noodles, and perfectly presented charsu pork and accompaniments. I magically seemed to have grown an ectopic stomach just to be able to enjoy this all! In the end... we were thrilled with the food and experience. The food was perfectly plated, pretty tasty, and the service was fast and efficient. The menu had plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options which were conveniently marked on the menu. Our group tried the tempura avocados and the parmesian fries, which went over well with everyone. The thai coconut risotto was good, even if the coconut was a bit overwhelming. Wow. I don't think that I have been treated so rudely before. We waited almost 1/2 hour for some food to go. Not even an apology. There were a total of 4 people seated in the restaurant and the kitchen was in a state of chaos. They had 4 total employees that I saw....... equal to the total number of customers! okay... Let me start by saying their food is good. I'm sure the residents in Forest Grove are happy to have an establishment like this that serves good food. That being said. The service is awful. I go to a lot of restaurants and I always leave at least a 20% tip. I understand how a restaurant works and that it has to be a cohesive unit to be successful. I also understand that on the day I went it was the evening of the Forest Grove Parade and that may have affected a few things. We arrived at about 4:30pm and there was one or two other tables seated other than that the place was dead. There appeared to be a server and a cook working, nobody else. The server was pretty slow to get to us because she was also helping the other tables. We ordered our beers (which came about 20 minutes later), we ordered our food, a few appetizers and some entrees. The appetizers came out fairly quick and everything seemed to be going well. The place started to fill up and the number of waitstaff and cooks increased to what appeared to be normal staffing levels. Some of the entrees were brought out at about the 40 minute mark. We asked about one entree and they said oh let me check on that. As we waited another 10 minutes they came back and said... "oh I guess we are out of the item.. is that okay?" It's one thing to forget an item, it happens a lot and we had appetizers and good conversation, but somebody knew 40 minutes earlier they were out of the item... of course it wasn't going to be okay. The entire time we were there it seemed as though there was a kitchen fire, they must not have an adequate ventilation system. The entire restaurant was filled with smoke. They had to keep opening the front doors to the restaurant to let the smoke out. Everyone was coughing, I'm not sure that it's up to code. They will be lucky if they don't get some workers compensation claims out of it. The 3rd server we had of the night did deduct the appetizers from our bill... but even then we had to take the bill up to the bar to get them to take our payment! I think the only way this place will survive is if they hire somebody who knows how to run a restaurant. The food is good. The location is good, but if you are choking out your patrons with smoke and not bringing them their food they probably won't return. read more

I really was hoping that Bites would be better than the last time I ate there, but sadly no. I ordered the naked burger which is supposed to come on organic butter lettuce, but mine is on shredded iceberg. Also the description says nothing about tomatoes (I'm highly allergic to them) and it came with a lot. I also ordered sweat potato fries as my side which came cold and I was charged more than menu price. I want restaurants to survive these tough times but I don't want to spend $18 for a meal I barely can eat. read more

Decided to give this place a try--- arrived at dinnertime and it was busy but not BUSY!! Was seated fairly quickly but then was basically ignored from that point. The waiter took our drink order and asked for water while we waited---it never came. Dinner order came quickly and portions were fair for the price (You get more for your money at Elmers) Food was good and nicely presented Service was S-L-O-W (even after the rush was over) Would recommend for a pre movie date night or a celebration type dinner but it won't be on our go to list read more

Great to see Forest Grove's Food Scene improving. There are a lot of choices for great food and drinks going on in Town. We really enjoyed our meal. We knocked out a buch of shared plates. I will say they have the best wings in town, bar none. They were awesome. Cooked perfectly and the sauce was just right. Just got home and I am craving them already. We do love this restaurant and usually have a good experience. They have gluten-free options and when requested, the chef was able to make other dishes GF, including the nachos. I appreciate the extra care and service. The last time we went, staff seemed a bit overwhelmed and we did not get our drink orders very quickly. They apologized and brought them 30 min later and took dinner order at the same time. The food was timely and is always delicious, even leftovers the next day. For GF options, I really enjoy the chicken fettuccine with artichokes and the mushroom risotto. Also have had the cucumber salad. read more

When this opened several years ago we were very excited for downtown Forest Grove. We went to enjoy the food here multiple times early on. At some point, the service changed and changed any negative direction. The experience was bad enough that we stopped going, and this was before Covid. We recently went back to give it a try. The food was very tasty. We had the Parmesan fries and I had garlic Parmesan green beans, both were excellent, very large portions, enough to share for four people easily. We ordered the chicken sandwich, Well very tasty, it should be advertised as a slider. It's really not very big. I had the equivalent of four chicken nuggets of chicken on my sandwich, my wife had a little bit more. The bartender, I was the only person who showed any interest in us. The young server gentleman was MIA for a good part of our meal. They use a QR code for ordering and apparently the people ahead of us had switch tables. He couldn't keep track of that and brought us their food. The only problem really there is that there were only four people in the restaurant at the time. My wife and the other couple. Will probably give it a try again in the future, when we feel like we have run out of other options in Forest Grove. My husband and I came in tonight and were immediately greeted and sat with the waiter who seemed to be the only one on the floor for the evening. He was prompt with our orders as well as everyone else in tonight. The food came out quickly and delicious. I tried the pork burger and sweet potato fries. my hubby enjoyed the 2 piece fish and chips. Overall we really enjoyed the meal. The bill for the two of us came in at just $20. Left us stuffed and unable to look at dessert, however I would love to go back and try. Great ambiance, great service, great food. read more

Definitely recommend the bites wings, they're good size and extremely tasty with their sauce. The avocado tempura was also amazing if you love avocado and a bit of spic! We came here for a long-overdue lunch date. This is not the cheapest place, but the lunch prices were fairly reasonable. Asian fusion cuisine is a little outside my husband's comfort zone, but it all worked out. The decor was cool -- modern with a lot of chalkboard type design. The place was pretty packed for lunch, and acoustics were less than ideal (read: loud). The decor emphasis was largely on the bar/wine/alcohol (I know this is common, but my husband is a recovering alcoholic so it always makes him uncomfortable). We had to wait a REALLY long time for our food -- so long that we were both wondering if something was wrong. I think they were shorthanded that day, though. BUT THE FOOD. IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOD. We both did the lunch specials. I had the lemongrass combo and he had the teriyaki combo. He loves teriyaki and proclaimed it the best he'd ever had. And my lemongrass combo was to die for good. Fun atmosphere for a little town like FG. I got the steak sandwich on special and was happy. My husband and friend both got a burger and neither were super impressed. Their biggest complaint (and I would agree) was the low-quality bun. It needed brioche or something because it felt like a fast-food burger with it. We had the nachos and wings as appetizers. The wings had too much sauce on them but the shrimp nachos were delicious. This was also my first time trying Sake and i had it in the Tokyo cocktail. It was strong! I've eaten at Bites a few times. I've had their Fried Tofu salad a couple of times, and I had their Teriyaki Tofu bowl. I've had their vegetarian gyoza. It's all about the sauces here. The service is a bit slow, and the meats are more gristle than meat, but the burgers are good. However, the sauces are exceptional (especially the unhelpfully-named "aioli sauce", which is a sweetish mayonnaise-y sauce which makes for an excellent dip for anything savory). I was so excited to go here..and then we got there. The hostess/waiter didn't escort us to our table. He grabbed menus and walked back to a table without saying to follow him, which was awkward. I didn't know if I should follow him or stay by the door. All of the dishes came out far apart. My fiancé was done eating when our son's dish came and my dish never arrived. We had to ask to order drink and we were never asked if we needed anything else or even spoken to much. They did take my dish off of the check, but overall it was such a disappointment. The cucumber salad is great! The chocolate molten lava cake was excellent! The burger was very good too. The crab cake bites are just ok. They come with a ton of what appeared to be thousand island dressing. Ugh. Not the choice I would have made. Regardless, we'd go back for the tempura avocado alone!! read more
