It is St. Joseph's Day. I have never had a zeppola and it's about time I did. So off we went to…read morestand in line at The Original Italian Bakery. The bakery has a small parking lot with about half a dozen spots. A policeman was on duty today to direct cars to the Walgreen parking lot next door when this lot was full, and to let them in when spots were open. As the line of people waiting outside the door to get in was constant, this was very smart planning and much appreciated. Some folks seemed to know St. Joseph's Day was very busy here and had placed orders in advance. These smart shoppers skipped the line and quickly came back outside with their orders bagged up. The line moved pretty well with four shop assistants helping customers. Only about 10 guests, max, fit inside at a time. Once inside bagged breads like sandwich rolls were on shelves while calzone and other meal pastry were in a case. Then, there were three cases full of zeppola. During our visit they had chocolate, pistachio, ricotta and original available. We got one of each. I cut my first zeppola in half and see the cream filling sits all the way down into the pastry. These are firm enough to hold in your hand and bit into. The pastry is very much like that in an éclair. Firm while being light and airy. The original filling is a lovely custard. The chocolate is a fluffy cream base I believe. Both were very tasty. I have two more to try and am looking forward to them. Between these tasty pastry and other items they had for sale there, we'll be back. You should check them out too.

She brought me here and all the cookies were looking so delicious! You could see the area in the back where sheets of cookie doughs were waiting to be sent to the oven; fresh daily baked cookies, it seems. Love the interior decor! The server was super nice!

But I thought that one cookie was great! At first, I was hesitant as the trendy pink decor was reminiscent of Crumbl, whose cookies I do not enjoy. So I was expecting Feed the Cheeks to serve me some generic, overly sweet gimmicky monstrosity that would make me ill. But no! I ordered the chocolate strawberry cookie and I really liked it. It wasn't overly sweet, but balanced in its flavor. The strawberry icing wasn't thick and gross and overly sweet either. The chocolate was rich and because they warmed it up, perfectly ooey gooey. If I had been a little more cognizant of my surroundings instead of getting worked up by the iPad ordering system (can we please bring back human interaction?), I probably would've gotten a four pack of the mini cookies and sampled a few flavors. But when in Rome, order the giant cookies. The cookie still tasted good when I finished it at work the next day, too. The inside is what you'd expect, and very pink. And there's a few short stools at a very low counter you can sit at. I had some time to kill so I sat and ate my cookie there. Passersby looked down on us from the large windows facing Angell Street. Maybe they were jealous that they didn't treat themselves to a big cookie, or maybe they were cherishing their own willpower as they looked forward to the kale salad awaiting them at home. Either way, the cookie was a great choice!

It's warm and cozy and although there were a lot of women during our visit, my three male companions didn't seem to be uncomfortable. Maybe it's the Italian vibe. We met up for a beverage and Café Italia offers coffee drinks, wine and beer among other things. I went with a hot cocoa (it was that or hot tea). Cocoa was definitely a good choice. It was lovely to look at and very chocolatey. I had heard they have a gelato flight available, which I did not see on the menu and did not ask about, but I will love coming back here in warmer months to check that out. The space is on the small side with some bar seating and a bench along the front side-walls with those cute marble tables and chairs in front. They get a good amount of seating in the small space without feeling too crowded. One waitress was managing the space alone and she did a wonderful job. Tattoos and piercings and sweet as a peach. I just want to hug her. Maybe that's just me. Parking is on street (some paid so look for the signs!) or in one of the paid lots in the area. One restroom for all at the back is modern and clean. Buon appetito
