It is St. Joseph's Day. I have never had a zeppola and it's about time I did. So off we went to stand in line at The Original Italian Bakery. The bakery has a small parking lot with about half a dozen spots. A policeman was on duty today to direct cars to the Walgreen parking lot next door when this lot was full, and to let them in when spots were open. As the line of people waiting outside the door to get in was constant, this was very smart planning and much appreciated. Some folks seemed to know St. Joseph's Day was very busy here and had placed orders in advance. These smart shoppers skipped the line and quickly came back outside with their orders bagged up. The line moved pretty well with four shop assistants helping customers. Only about 10 guests, max, fit inside at a time. Once inside bagged breads like sandwich rolls were on shelves while calzone and other meal pastry were in a case. Then, there were three cases full of zeppola. During our visit they had chocolate, pistachio, ricotta and original available. We got one of each. I cut my first zeppola in half and see the cream filling sits all the way down into the pastry. These are firm enough to hold in your hand and bit into. The pastry is very much like that in an éclair. Firm while being light and airy. The original filling is a lovely custard. The chocolate is a fluffy cream base I believe. Both were very tasty. I have two more to try and am looking forward to them. This establishment is a staple for the Johnston community. Their Zepole selection is nothing short of amazing. The bread, pizza strips, and desserts are wonderful. They also give back to the community by donating to schools and worthy causes. I wish I would've taken pictures during my visit, but it was a holiday weekend and it was packed. i have been wanting to try this pizza chips in rhode island. upon looking online it seemed like the place to go. it's around 15 minutes away from providence and i got a few variety of goods things.. i started off with the jalapeño pizza chips. they had the most incredible crunch and flavor. the jalapeños and sauce were incredible. the pizza strips had a delicious bready texture. i also got three canolis that were fresh, crunchy, and had a wonderful sweet cream filling with dark chocolate chips. i would definitely checking out this spot! it has good quality baked goods and great service. read more

I had been hearing about this bakery for a while, but my first taste was when I tried their pizza chips at a friend's house and I couldn't stop thinking about them. Then, at Zoobilee, I spotted them again, this time topped with jalapeños. In all my years living in Rhode Island, I've never found jalapeño pizza chips anywhere, and wow.. they instantly won my heart. I knew I had to make it a mission to stop by the bakery. And let me tell you they did not disappoint! The service was amazing, and everything I tried was delicious. I had a cannoli (with chocolate chips, of course), a giant M&M cookie (literally the size of my head), and of course, their famous jalapeño pizza chips. While waiting, I noticed they also have calzones, breads, cakes, and so much more. Oh, and bonus points for having parking, which is a rare find! Staff was friendly but I could tell they know what their customers. I saw a few things on Yelp I wanted to try including the Zeppoli. Sadly, I didn't like the Zeppoli much. It was Styrofoam-like with pudding filling. My sister didn't like it my neither. She only took a small pinch of it. I had to toss half of it. I had high hopes for it. However the danish with cream cheese and blueberry was as expected. It could have used more icing though. My sister gladly ate half of it. read more

I forgot I went here! How could I? It was last year in December, I went for the pizza rounds, love those little disks of joy! Everything looked amazing, I took no pictures. The Original Italian Bakery is a welcome sight for this South Jersey boy. Fed Hill in Providence opened up my eyes to how great the Italian bakeries in Rhode Island are. I have started to delve into the other big Rhode Island Italian community, which is located in Johnston. This bakery has the best local reviews, so it was my first spot to visit in town. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere reminded me of my favorite bakeries from South Jersey. It has earned the acclaim with great zeppoles and a new favorite of mine, pizza chips! These bite-size pizzas are awesome and pack a lot of flavor in a small package. I saved some for home, and they were perfect in the air fryer. I tried their Irish cream and pistachio zeppoles too. The Irish cream is hands down my favorite. The best part? I've only scratched the surface. From jalapeño pizza chips to classic cannolis, there's enough variety for anyone to grab their favorite. I'm excited to explore their other sweets and maybe a pizza strip (they have great tomato sauce.) After a couple more gym sessions, I'll be sure to come back and fill my sweet tooth! read more

I had such a great experience at The Original Italian Bakery! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with the warm, inviting smell of fresh-baked goods, and it only got better from there. I tried a selection of their danishes--cheese, blueberry, and cherry--and each one was absolutely divine. New to the neighborhood after living on Fed Hill for the last 3 years. I saw "The Original Italian Bakery" while I was driving down Atwood. I was intrigued, so I did what I think a lot of us do, and looked on Yelp when I got home. I passed it 5 or 6 times since then, on my way back from Home Depot or Walmart. Today the stars aligned, I had an extra minute or two to stop in...wait for it...amazing!!! I bought some cannoli, had to try the sfogliatalla, as I've never tried one, and bought some pizza chips. Everything was wonderful. I haven't tried the pizza strips, but if the sauce on the chips is the same as the chips...I'm going to say it's my favorite. 5 outta 5 for sure!!! read more

We have been hearing how good this bakery is. Finally got to stop by in for a bite to eat. Got a spinach calzone, a pecan twist and some pizza chips. Not overly expensive total was 20 bucks. The counter girl really nice and respectful. Took a bite out of the spinach calzones and they were really salty, Couldn't finish. OK maybe they can redeem themselves with the pecan twist, Tried to break a piece off the pecan twist. couldn't take a piece off. I had to bite into it. Pastry usually gets like after a few days.... Pizza! chips really good definitely stoping by to buy more! Over all .... I would stop by again if ever in the neighborhood to try the other goods. read more

The pizza chips seem to be the thing to for at this Italian bakery with the not so original name in Johnston, Rhode Island. You can get them as red chips, white chips or jalapeno chips. All are good. It is a small storefront, but it is out of this humble establishment that some pretty amazing things are coming from. In addition to the pizza chips, which you can buy nationally, they offer a slew of other baked goods. Plan on being there for awhile because you will find yourself "window shopping" and you will walk out with more than you planned on buying. The bread in this old school Italian bakery is pretty amazing, especially if you call Florida (where good bread is so hard to find that many believe it is simply a myth) home. Johnston, Rhode Island has a strong Italian community, which produces some pretty amazing places with an emphasis on Italian cuisine, one of the most beloved cuisines in this world and considered one of the mother cuisines of the world. Growing up in New Jersey, I took for granted the amazing Italian food we had there and it took moving to Florida for me to realize that not every town or city had great Italian food on every corner.
