So I bought a 2012 chevy sonic lt from the carhop down the street from this shop. The cars been nothing but a headache. Breaking down on me only 3 weeks of driving it off the lot. Bitterling's auto has been doing their best to figure out why my car will not start as there seems to be an unknown internal issue. Ik Bitterling's team has been communicating with carhop the difficulties n have been doing their part. I would never recommend Bitterling's to anyone after the service I had! They are not professional and do not give a clear picture of work required. I DROVE my car into Bitterlings, approved $500 worth of work, then got 2 more calls about an additional $200, then $150 worth of work needed. $850 total. When I was told I'd be able to pick my car up, I got another call that a part had FALLEN OFF my engine and it is NO LONGER RUNNING, requiring an additional $1050 worth of work to get it running again, a total of $1900. The car was older and almost at 100k miles so the estimated necessary work total had exceeded the value of the car. They still REQUIRED THAT I PAID the $850, even though this work did nothing to fix the vehicle because it NOW WON'T START. I also, went by the shop on a Saturday (not realizing they were closed for the entire weekend) to find my car parked on their lot with the DOORS UNLOCKED and my personal belongings inside. I was lucky nothing was stolen because they have signs all over their office saying they are not responsible for stolen property - so had anything been stolen, it would have been my responsibility, not theirs for leaving my vehicle unlocked on their unfenced, not secure property while they were closed with no one on site for 63 hours. ---- I am upset with the service here because I feel like I was taken advantage of and price gouged instead of hearing from an experienced mechanic about the extent of the work needed to repair my car. I was never given a full picture of the damage my car had sustained, instead I was told small estimates at separate times totaling to a lot of money that never actually fixed the car. Keep in mind, this car was running when I brought it to them so I basically paid for them to break my car and ask for even more money to fix that. I got multiple calls and estimates throughout the day while they were working on my car: 1st call- I was told I was lucky that I only needed $500 worth of work,  2nd call - thermometer needed to be replaced $200, 3rd call - small repair for oil leak $150. After approving all of this work and the 3rd time I had talked to them, they mentioned that the timing chain was stretched but I was told that it DIDN'T NEED TO BE FIXED and I could pick my car up by the end of the day. As the end of the day approached, I called to ask about picking up my car. She called back to tell me that while THE MECHANIC WAS DRIVING MY CAR OUT FOR PICKUP, THE TIMING CHAIN HAD FALLEN OFF AND NOW THE CAR WILL NOT START! To fix this they estimated an additional $1050 of work ($1,900 total). I said no to the work because I wanted to do some research, as now the total of all the work already approved and required, exceeded the value of the vehicle. Moneeba called me multiple times the day after my car broke asking for a decision on doing the additional work but when I asked for the estimates in writing she could not provide anything in writing. Moneeba said THEY DON'T PROVIDE ESTIMATES IN WRITING therefore, I must write it down myself (which is actually against the law in Washington to not provide written estimates for work over $100). She said she would try to put an invoice together with the work I had approved but it took 2 days to finally get the repairs they had done in writing. Still no written estimate for the work required to get the car running again. When I came in to speak to Moneeba and discuss options, she was defensive and demanding that they had done nothing wrong. The only thing that she did to right the wrongs of her shop (and I doubt she would have had I not requested it) was due to the fact that I could no longer drive my car off the property -  was she didn't charge me to store my car on the lot past the week mark while I tried to sell it. I'd also like to point out that the old owner, Don, no longer owns this auto shop and most of these reviews are for the business he ran. Bitterling's is not accredited by the BBB. Moneeb new owner is the top worst customer service I've ever had First called for a new ignition cylinder old one out no key so reprogrammed to one key all door locks programmed driver side door window replaced. 500. Initial bid. Did not authorize any mechanical work. Tow truck driver verify catalyze converters intact 6 weeks with every excuse why it was not complete then I'm told hole in gas tank complimentary new installed and that there was a missing catalyst converter they did a horrible job I now have 2 keys my truck is damaged they changed out my transmission changed my odo there's a gap between numbers would not produce my old parts. 1,200.00 and I ran out of gas they are beyond shady. Believe I'm going to prove what they did. Do not go there it's not the fabulous Bitterlings it's a imposter that is a crook and awful she has this evil sneaky thinks she is funny damaging vehicles. CONSUMER BEWARE!!! First of all, and an important fact, is that any reviews that were posted a year ago were when Don still owned the business. Now? If I could leave negative stars I would. Do not take your vehicle here! I'll just mention a couple of reasons. The guy behind the counter, Grant, doesn't wear a mask at all. If the rest of us care enough to wear one, that proves he doesn't care or respect customers. Moneeva, or whatever her name is, is difficult to understand with her broken English, has a disrespectful attitude, and doesn't know anything about cars! If you're going to buy a mechanical shop at least hire someone that respects customers and knows what they're doing. They have muddied the Bitterling name, which infuriates me. I took my suv in there to check for a body leak. Four hours later they couldn't find it. I was frustrated that I wasted my afternoon waiting for their incompetence. An older man came in from the garage area, heard my frustration, and said, in the ugliest tone, "You don't do this!" I probably could better than them after my experiences. The no masked front desk guy and that old man from the back offended me, and Moneeva took no responsibility for their behavior. Instead she agreed. My last point is this. The mechanic had taken out the drain plug under the drivers side carpet and didn't bother to put it back. I had to take my car to a body shop later in the month and they found it and put it back. Also, I have WeatherTech mats that are attached with floor hooks and can be tricky to lift out, but not impossible. The mechanic pulled up on it so hard it ripped it out of the carpet! I've attached a photo of it. They hid the fact and still won't take responsibility for it! It's since been repaired by the body shop I mentioned. Have been here several times in the past but when I brought my car in for the fluids to be serviced something just didn't feel the same. I had been very happy with them in the past. I see now that the business was sold within the last year or so. I brought in an estimate that the dealership had given me to change out the fluids in my car. The woman behind the counter read each item and we scheduled a date for me to drop my car off. She said that once they look at the car, they can better determine what work actually needs to be done. I get a call the next day from the same woman asking me what I want them to do with my car. ??? I bring it in early in the morning for them to see what needs to be done and I get a call around noon asking me again what I want them to do. Crazy. Any way, I pick up my car and get another phone call shortly after, they forgot to install the air filter. I dropped it off a few days later and they installed it. So, about a month passes and I pop the hood of my car to add some windshield fluid. I see that there is no cap on the coolant tank. It is nowhere to be found. So I had been driving around about a month with no coolant cap and the coolant level looked completely empty. I called them today and told them what I found, I also said that I know it had a cap when I brought it in and if it didn't, I would have expected them to point that out. They just forgot to replace it. The person I spoke with apologized but that was about it. I ended up just buying a replacement cap on Amazon. Now I am not even sure if they checked anything at all. Worst mechanic I've ever been to. After replacing my clutch Bitterling's returned my car with broken motor and transmission mounts and then gave me an estimate to fix what they broke. Yes, you read that right. I called for a price estimate to replace my clutch. It was reasonable and they have good reviews, so I dropped my car off there. They replaced it and the bill ended up being over $200 more than the original estimate. Okay, now it's costing me more than the highest estimate I had previously gotten. That's frustrating. Far more frustrating was that Bitterling's returned my car with a sagging rattling engine saying it now had either broken engine mounts and/or broken transmission mount. They stated they didn't know if it was like that when they got it. I assured them it was not. How are you as a professional mechanic not going to notice if an engine is sagging and rattling when you get it?? The technician stated that if they did break it, sometimes things break on older cars, oh well. They then handed me an estimate to fix what they broke!!! I brought it to another mechanic who was shocked that Bitterling's would do this. That mechanic suggested I ask Bitterling's to meet me halfway and just charge me for labor and I pay for the parts myself. I'm screwed because I need my car. So, I called Bitterling's and suggested that as a solution. They fought with me. I said just meet me halfway and fix what you broke. I finally spoke with the owner who finally agreed. She stressed that they were only doing this as a favor to "help me out". Charging me to fix what you broke is not "helping" me. I asked the owner specifically which parts I needed to order. Parts arrive. I call Bitterling's to make sure that I had the correct parts. I was told I would need more parts to fix everything they broke. I only found this out because I followed up with them, I ordered more parts and waited another week for them to arrive and get another appointment because Bitterling's is booked full, sorry! Then they forgot to book the new appointment. After taking yet another day off work and finding a ride I showed up only to be asked why I was there. While waiting I ask for another written estimate with just the labor. It's now estimated to cost EVEN MORE than the original quote (which included labor and parts). The owner also stated, "I forgot to add you into our system. Can you come back later the following week?" No. Tired of this treatment and waste of my time and money I am going to another mechanic who is hopefully more trustworthy and ethical than this business. read more

I took my Jeep grand Cherokee 08 when it started having trouble after a truck backed into it and left the scene. Jeep needed a radiator and something replaced for the AC to work (can't recall what it's called) i left satisfied with my car feeling brand new. A couple of months later while grocery shopping my car wouldn't start, after confirming it wasn't the battery needing to be replaced. Turns out it was my alternator, I took it in and had it back and working that same day to make it to work the next day. They have been life saving to say the least. My husband also took his truck in which had much worse issues, they were honest and explained it was much more reasonable to get a different vehicle but were willing and able to fix. We decided to follow their advice. The lady at the counter was nothing but kind and helpful to myself, my husband and my toddlers who can sometimes be wild but she seemed very understanding and helped me with paper work so I could be on my way lol . Called Bitterlings today to inquire about bringing in my Mazda3 for a written estimate on a clutch replacement before committing to a $1,000+ job. I asked him several ways about paying for a diagnostic and getting a written estimate before commencing work and phone guy's attitude was "Just bring it in and we'll do 'ya and 'ya pay it." He dodged around my simple questions. He wouldn't even tell me his rates for a diagnostic. Heck no! Very shady operator! Note: You have a legal right (RCW 46.71.015) in Washington to a written estimate before a mechanic commences work on anything over $100. You do have to pay for the diagnostic- but strictly AVOID any place that refuses to give a written estimate before commencing work. That's illegal. Also avoid any place that won't agree to return your replaced auto parts. Also illegal. Under law (RCW 46.71.021) mechanics must return or show you any replaced parts if you've ask them before work commences. Know your rights, keep those shady mechanics (mostly) honest. read more

I had pretty much the same experience as the rest of the recent reviews. They messed up on my appointments, once not scheduling it at all after I had taken the day off of work to bring my car there. They didn't seem to care about the mistake, just whoops forgot to schedule you. They returned my car with broken parts and an estimate to fix what they had broken. Just a joke of a place. I absolutely love these people! They know what they are doing and have kept me informed of what and why things need to be repaired on my car. I have a Subaru Forester which I bought from a shady dealer. He claimed the head gaskets were just replaced but a week later I'm spilling oil everywhere. The gaskets had not been touched. Needless to say, I had to fork out double what I planned on spending on the car but I am confident it was done right! Their mechanic, Jeff, is an expert on Subaru's and took the time to show me what was being done to fix some of the parts i wasn't familiar with. I am so pleased with the work they have done and treated my car as if it was their own. I'm handing the car off to my daughter who gets her license next month so I'm looking to purchase another Subaru. This time I'm taking it to Bitterlings for an inspection prior to buying it. Growing up my dad would always tell us kids to get our auto repair work done at Bitterlings. They are honest, fair, thorough and get their work done on time. It's been years since he has lived in Tacoma but still tells us the same thing. I finally took his advice even though it was a whole new crew from when he took his car/s there. I took my car into Bitterling's to have my 100,000 mile tune up...my honda civic was at 125,000 miles, and get an oil change. I also wanted my "turn off your headlights you idiot!" alarm fixed if it didn't cost too much. In the end..I walked out the door paying 76 dollars for the oil change and the idiot alarm. WHAAAA?? They said my spark plugs looked brand new and they weren't going to charge me for a tune up that isn't needed. (I guess the car got a tune up when I had to change the timing belt a few years back....or my ten year old Honda Civic is freaking awesome!) Any other place would have just done the tune up and charged me hundreds for it. *cough* Firstone *cough* but not these guys. Honesty here! And they were so friendly and kind. Family owned for generations...and for a small business to last as long as Bitterling's, they had to have made honesty a priority and held on to that virtue for generations. Brought in my 2004 Honda Civic at 81k miles. It was due for the 80k scheduled maintenance, but since I hadn't had a major service done since about 30k miles, I wasn't sure if I should do the 90k maintenance instead. Honda dealership quoted me a price of $399.00 plus tax for the 80k service. My airbag light came on recently, and when I asked Honda about that, they said it'd be $105 plus tax just to hook my car up to the diagnostic test to see why the airbag light was on. Bitterlings did BOTH the 80k AND 90k service on my car and fixed the airbag light for FREE and only charged me a total of $171.25 EVERYONE SHOULD BRING THEIR CAR TO THESE GUYS. Excellent, fast service. We're new in town so we browsed Yelp reviews when our 2004 Chevy Colorado broke down last week. Normally my husband just does the fixing, but because of the mess of problems going on, we decided to just bite the bullet and take it to a shop this time. We needed the broken off key removed from the ignition and 2 major parts replaced. I thought, oh great, it'll be a week before we get it back. They called us at 10:00 AM the next morning and said it was ready. It's been a week since the repairs and everything is running perfectly. They were polite, they worked incredibly quickly, and the stress relief of not having to do it ourselves was more than worth the nominal service charge. I will absolutely recommend Bitterling's! If you are like me, here is the general concept of your vehicle. You start the engine, and then you drive. As a result, you like the maintenance on your car like you like your conversations with your co-workers, short, simple, and to the point. My experience at Bitterling's was similar to a painless talk with someone whom I do not know well at work, short and direct. Please keep in mind that I only had a routine oil change done here. However, I arrived and about 45 minutes later, I was out. My only qualm was that I felt like $45 is slightly high for an oil change of a 2010 Honda. However, for convenient, efficient, and secure service, I am glad to pay a few dollars more. I highly recommend visiting them for your next auto need. read more

I took my car here because I was in need of some windshield wiper repair since the linkage bushings had failed on mine and I was forced to drive around in the pounding rain on the highway without wipers. The gentlemen at Bitterling's were able to quickly find out what parts they needed in order to fix the problem (though unfortunately said parts only seemed to be available directly from the Nissan dealership). Though the parts were going to take a day to ship, they did spray rain repellent on my window so that I could at least get home safely. They had the parts ordered and ready for me the next day. They installed everything quickly and I was priced fairly for the parts, shipping, and installation time. I am overall pleased with their workmanship and their friendliness. They are also a dog friendly business. I brought my Doberman in because I was going to take him to the park afterwards, and they gave him some dog treats which he enjoyed very much. read more

I was told by Dodds automotive that I needed inner tie rods so I took it to bitterlings and bitterlings checked and no I didn't need inner tie rods. My first time using this shop and I'm really impressed with their service. The owner let me drop off my vehicle before they opened so I could make it to work on time. The quote they gave me for the repair was literally half the estimate of another shop in town and that saved me hundreds of dollars. First off, I am always dreading going to a mechanic because some places just make you feel completely stupid for not knowing the details of your problems. That wasn't the case here. They kept it nice and simple. "What's going on with it?" Followed by, "Ok, we will get right on it." About a half an hour later they called me to tell me what was going on and gave me a very reasonable quote. Everything was done perfectly and they even gave me a new cap for my clutch fluid reservoir. So.. I recently bought a new car, 99 Honda CRV, and decided to do some preventative maintenance. I took car in Thursday April 2nd and asked to have my drivers side door taken off, my window put back on track (It was working, but only went down halfway and was off track)and to have them do a head to toe inspection because of a clinking noise. They said they would need it overnight, so I left it their and was told I would be called tomorrow morning and they would have an update and a quote. They called me at 9:23 am and told me that everything was good except they can't adjust the window, they have to replace the regulator and motor mount. Also, they found the noise and that it was the sway bar links. They also claimed that the front brakes and rotors needed to be replaced. They quoted me after tax $801.97. I thought to myself, good, now everything will be good to go, and my new car has been inspected by reputable mechanics. So now, I give em the go ahead, and they start doing their work. All I have to do now is wait for a call, and pick up my car. I grow impatient and give them a call at 1:39 pm wondering if it's almost done ( they close at 5) said not yet, but it's up on the lift and they were working on it now.At 3:56 pm I cal them again wondering if my vehicle was ready to be picked up. Don answers the phone and apologizes by saying "We're really sorry, we're gonna need to do some more work on it. A part broke, and I don't want to tell you too much, but it's between the head and the piston, and the part is at the machine shop now, and if they can't ix it, well then we'll have to go from there." Feeling royally fucked I asked the only question on my mind, "when will I have my car back, and what exactly did you break?" "well, it's between the head and the piston and probably nothing, but sometimes when you do these things with too much torque, old pieces will break..." I explain the situation to my parents (broke college student) and they convince me to have some faith, and just let them handle it. There logic was, "they already admitted to breaking it, now I'm sure they will make sure that everything is perfect when they give it back, these things have warranties". I'm thinking, o.k, good. They're right, I'm probably just worried over nothing. Monday April 6th (closed on weekends), finally I can get my car back.I call them at 9:28 am, they tell me that they're going to have to replace the ball joints, and that that would be another 255.22. I'm like, hold the fuck up, on Friday, you said you broke something and sent it to the machinist, now you're telling me i need even more work done on my car, and you still haven't told me what you broke in the first place. They claim nothing happened, and that I don't need the ball joints now, but will need them in the immediate future. To go ahead and wrap this story up, they ended up charging me 1,137.99 to pick up my car on Monday April 6th. I immediately notice that the noise is still there, and now the alignment is god awful. Hard turning to the left to stay straight. Can't let my hands off the wheel for a second or else I'll end up in the sidewalk. I look at my bill, Ball Joint- remove and replace, DOES NOT INCLUDE ALIGNMENT. So my car that was driving straight, is now pulling to the right, I'm out 1200.00, and my car still has the same problem. Oh, well my window works, so theirs that. I take it back Tuesday April 14th, explain that they essentially fixed nothing, the reason I came to them, and the problem that they charged me 1200.00 for isn't fixed, and that the check engine light is now on. I bring up that they claimed to have broken something, but never admitted as to what they broke exactly, and Don say " Oh that wasn't you're car, that was a Subaru."... Let em have it for the day, didn't expect it back until Wednesday anyway, They called me on Thursday and said they fixed it. They replaced the sway bar links with different ones. I pick it up Friday, still the same problems, and I no longer have the energy or resources to put into them fixing. Literally, on the 2nd receipt they gave me there is a note stating " car still has a clicking in back is rear sway bar brushings in back, not parts avail today, has minor noises in front, control arm brushings have a bit of wear could be causing noise or possible front struts? hard to pin down exactly, see if good enough for now, not dangerous" I'm letting everyone i run into know, don't go to Bitterlings. read more

I cannot recommend this garage enough! They have worked on my Land Rover in the past , so when the brakes started acting up last week, I took it to Bitterlings. They went above and beyond attempting to fix the problem. When I returned to pick it up they said there would be no charge because they weren't sure if they had fixed the problem or not. After spending four hours on my car, I was more than willing to pay them for their time, but they wouldn't let me! I could not be more pleased, and their work did indeed fix the problem my car was having. read more

I am always astounded on how honest these guys are. Always helpful and, three cars later, never had a problem with any of my vehicles. Always honest, even letting me know when they aren't diesel mechanics and sending me elsewhere as well as giving me great advice on where to take (and NOT take) my other vehicles (horse trailers, etc.). Moved from Texas to Washington and drove my 2007 Nissan all the way here , I know it's been a minute and my truck was due for brake service, I had taken it for a free brake check at some Lakewood mechanic they quoted me for 400 $ they said it needed new rotors plus services and new pads , I searched and found Bitternlings on yelp and read the awesomeness reviews and decided to bring my truck in. The best mechanic ever , they provided great service and for half the price I was quoted before , the owner was super nice and I didn't feel taken advantage of since I am a woman and hardly know About cars . glad I found them I recommend this to all my family no friends great service and won't disappoint !!!!! read more

This place is as ethical as they come! I stopped driving my car after hearing a grinding noise when I applied the brakes. I had it towed to Bitterling's and they said there's plenty of life left on the brake pads and that the grinding noise was from sand! All I needed was a battery replacement after it had sat so long before we hauled it in for service. I cannot recommend this place enough! These guys have amazing integrity! I've been going to Bitterling's for years, primarily for oil changes. But once I couldn't start my truck, they tried for several hours and admitted they couldn't fix the problem as it was computer related. They charged me nothing, 0 dollars. I called this morning for a tow on the opposite side of the city, Brown's Point. They made it there in about an hour, pretty good time for a last minute call all the way out here. I have a tricky driveway but the driver handled it no problem, had my car loaded and on it's way in less than 10 minutes. Great and fast service! Came in to get my 100,000 mile check up and mounting bracket replaced. They reviewed what I didn't need in the maintenance package, cuz I already had most of it covered with oil change and coolant flush, etc. Turn around time for the entire service was roughly 2 hours (got there right wjen it opened) and the cost was very reasonable and affordable. The guys working there are professional and refrain from any vulgarity or inappropriate conversation around customers. Everyone was also very courteous and had a smile on their faces.
