My wife and I wanted some good home cooking and boy did we find it! BJ's is clean, friendly and bright like a small town diner. We were greeted graciously and felt welcome immediately when we walked in. The dinners for the night were listed on a chalk board as well as the menu. I saw fried chicken and fried wings knew I was in good hands. My wife ordered the short ribs with mashed potatoes and gravy. The beef was melt in your mouth tender and bathed in a savory gravy only brewed up by aunts and grandmothers on Sundays. My fried chicken was super crispy and seasoned perfectly. The collards had a deep bass note of smoked pork and were cooked to the point of tenderness without being mushy. Mac and cheese on my side was very good. Guests can help themselves to beverages in a large cooler or the friendly staff will serve you if you ask. First off they slow as fuck. I called in a order at 7:37. They told me 15min 50mins later I get the food(8:27). The food was mediocre at best. Mac and cheese was out the box not baked. Fish was good yams were alright. Because of time I will never order from them again. If they would of said it's gonna be 50 min I would of waited before I went. This spot has been around for many, many years. The food is extremely good. I haven't been disappointed by anything I've had here. The fried chicken is on point. Sometimes, I go the grits, eggs and sausage route and it's all good. Collard Greens are good but the main thing is that none of the food is too salty. That has been a common problem with soul food restaurants in general...too much salt in the food. That's why my brothers and sisters have blood pressure issues. The Hudson Valley needs more soul food establishments, pronto! There's got to be more than BJs or your black friend's house to get premium soul food. I was really excited to discover a soul food place like this in Beacon. Definitely a not-to-miss home-cooking experience. Before I get carried away, I must admit the food is not out of this world but the entire experience is so rare (in these here parts) and comfortable that its still definitely worth a visit. I had oxtail, yams, collard greens and a giant can of Arizona ice tea. Service was slow but friendly and the food is cooked to order by the same staff. The ox-tail was great. So I just noticed that I never really fully reviewed this place. And I was really unhappy with it. So i had to come back and tell my story. I was in town for an early morning appointment and wanted to have breakfast after that meeting. I looked here on yelp for a near by place to sit down and have a quick meal. There's a bunch on this street, but I felt the need to go with the more ethnic feel meaning "The down south" feel of the name and type of cuisine they serve. I was the only one when I walked in, it was earlyish like 9. Walked to the kitchen to place my order with the only person there. It felt different than any experience I had because it's a good size place, and there was no one there except the cook. I ordered a corn beef hash breakfast a coffee and a bottle of apple juice. After which I received a bill for $15.80 I was stupefied by the bill which I then asked the cook, how can it be so expensive for canned beef, oily, under cooked, "home fries" and 2 eggs. She then went to the register to ring it up only to find I was being over charged a $1.25. Maybe I'm just venting but that was the most expensive worst breakfast I've ever had. Cheap, cheap, cheap. I had oxtail and the meat was grey and desiccated. I actually thought of not eating the meat. But I am cheap and I was hungry so down the tasteless food went. I was afraid of food poisoning but escaped. My wife's chicken was okay but nothing special. The sides (mac and cheese, cole slaw and corn bread) were all disappointing except for the corn bread. Our friends had the pork chop and reported that it was dry and tasteless. But the food was very inexpensive. I have no idea where the five star reviews come from. read more

I love this place. Chicken and waffles are a little known gem to this town. You never know who is working here and who is just hanging out. It takes a while to get food. But it all adds to the lazy home kitchen feel of the place. Everyone just chats with each other and takes their time in here.The clientele obviously dates back decades. Cakes and pies are a must. This was one of the best dinners out I've had in a long time. My fiance and I noticed the sign that said "oxtails" and decided to try the place - and we were SO glad we did! We each ordered the oxtails with mac & cheese and collard greens, and a bowl of lima bean soup. The oxtails were AMAZING - the meat fell right off the bone and melted like butter in my mouth. Good mac & cheese, too; it turned out they'd run out of collards so we had green beans instead, but those were tasty as well - and now we'll just have to make our way back there to try the greens ;) I'd never had lima bean soup before but theirs made me want to try my hand at it - it was the perfect fix at the end of a windy day with lots of walking around, and the cornbread that came with it was fantastic. There were a lot of different pies which we unfortunately didn't have the time (or stomach space!) to try, but now that's just another reason to go back. An added bonus was the stock of really good bottled cream soda, root beer, and similar. Barbara, the owner, worked with me on figuring out which cuts & wings to choose in order to maximize my order and was just super helpful overall. My wife and I came up to Beacon from central Jersey for the afternoon to attend a production at the Howell Center. I had picked this place to get a meal before the production based on the rating and cost, not having read the reviews. We got to the restaurant at about 3 PM, but didn't get our food until about 3:35. We had to eat in a hurry to be able to walk to the production at the other end of town. That being said, the food was delicious. I got the chopped barbecue and my wife got the barbecued ribs, both with the yams and collard greens sides. They were excellent! And as others have mentioned, you can't beat the price. If I get up this way again and have more time to eat, I would definitely like to try some of the other menu items. read more

Very Good, Takes a while. So I love Soul Food and found this little gem on main street in beacon. They have all your classic soul food meals. Fried Chicken, Short Ribs, and all the sides. I can recommend the chicken and the hot Sausage on a bun is cheap and awesome for lunch. They do breakfast too. The exterior looks outdated and uninviting but don't let that fool you. The inside is classic and extremely clean. The guy even wears an old school spotless white frock like milk shake joints in the 50's. The food does take a while to cook. My friend and i were about to walk right past it until i noticed the open sign and asked her if we should try that place. A man about to walk in told us it was good so we took his word for it since we were very hungry. Walking in iit didnt look like much but the amount of people showed that the food had to be good. We found a seat near the bar area and we got our drinks and the waitress there trying to keep upp with all her customers greeted us despite her stress ( but its okay she did great handling it all!) Even though the breakfast is only until 12pm they still took our breakfast order and it was DELICIOUS! Definitely happy we stopped in and gave it a try. Would definitely come again. Well I was here a few days ago but forgot to leave a review(oops). So here I am to drop some kind words in this soul food gem in Beacon. When my fiance and her friend finished with crossfit they stopped here for a quick bite and I met them. When I first walked in I was automatically a little cautious because the place seemed a little out of date, but then I thought "hey its kind of charming and a nice getaway from the trendy norm of the new Beacon. The old guy at the counter really really made a great impression and added to the charm of the place. My girl ordered the oxtail with collard greens and yams and her friend ordered the baked chicken with collard greens and rice with red beans. The order took some time to come out but that wait was made enjoyable by the old guys stories and convo. Once the food came I was definitely impressed by the portions, enough for me and my girl to share. The oxtail was tender and really well cooked. The gravy was and awesome feature, the collard greens were great and the yams were pretty decent. I took a bite of our friends baked chicken and even though it was a little tiny bit dry it was seasoned perfect and was really really good. The rice was pretty good too. After the meal all three of us decided to treat ourselves and share some homemade sweet potato pie.......whoa. Epic, amazing, perfect, heavenly....just to name a few words to describe it. For the two meals it came out to around 25 bucks which reallynwas great just based off the portions. Not happy with the food at all. The chicken wasn't crispy bearly cooked and not enough seasoning. The mac an cheese tasted like it was kraft. (Boxed) mac and cheese. The cornbread was weak the collard greens was not seasoned. Well. The service was slow but the people were nice. I tried it once, never again.
