    Roaming around on the ferry!
    Alden C.

The Black Ball Ferry was a fun ferry to go on! Usually when we take ferries it's Washington state ones and the ones we typically use we aren't on them for too terribly long. But this ferry goes across the Straight of Juan De Fuca from Port Angeles to Victoria. And this ferry ride is about an hour and a half so it's quite a while to settle yourself in and enjoy the ride. We liked seeing lots of other boats as we crossed while we had morning coffee, breakfast or snacks while looking out the window and visiting. Since this ferry trip is an international trip it's mandatory to go up to the seating area and not remain in your car during the trip. The boat encountered choppy waters from time to time so if you get motion sickness it's a good idea to bring medication for it. Prices are kind of high but again I am comparing it to Washington state ferries and Black Ball is not a state ferry, it's to a destination to a different country and probably other factors than involve the price. However if you are planning to walk on and not bring your car the rates are pretty affordable. Definitely worth it however and proved to be an exciting experience!

The ferry port is right next to the Port Angeles Wharf

I had a smooth first experience going to BC on the Black Ball ferry. The car parking onto the ferry was well coordinated and easy to park. Once you park, you can walk up the stairs to find indoor or outdoor seating. The booths fill up quickly, and don't be shy, if it's not completely full and you want a booth seat, just ask. Everyone seemed really friendly. There is a full hot food/snack bar type of concession with soda pop, juice, energy drinks, coffee and alcohol. Lots of snacks, and even souvenirs too. They have information kiosks with things to do and local magazines. It made a 90 minute ferry ride fun, exciting, yet relaxing. Very enjoyable and smooth.

Bing Crosby loved this ferry and so will you.

We did the walk on ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria. A friendly yet unenthusiastic young woman sold us some reasonable priced tickets for a pleasant 90 minute ride to beautiful Victoria. You know what makes the ride special outside of the stunningly spectacular natural world surrounding you as you cross this magnificent body of water? I'll tell you what. They play some sort of Bing Crosby song about riding the black ball ferry line at the start of the journey, so I knew I wore the right hat!

WA to Victoria Have walked on (summer) and done sightseeing booked through the ferry and have driven on (December) and have had seamless experiences both time. Made online reservations both times and would highly recommend it especially if you are traveling a distance. If driving on you can not stay in your car. Gift shop, duty free and galley are available.

Prior to "the COVID years", I don't believe I have ever been on a ferry in my entire life; at least none that I remember. During those trouble years, when everyone was going stir-crazy with cabin fever, and dining outside was our only option, my wife and I started venturing out on road trips seeking experiences in the PNW that were engaging, exciting, and new even to life-time WA residents such as myself. It was then that I started to realize how little I knew about my own state, and region. I've been to over a dozen different countries, but had barely explored my own backyard! And what a wealth of treasures we have surrounding us, within driving (and ferrying) distance! Beyond WA and OR, it's sometimes easy to forget that there's an entire other country resting on top of us ("America's hat", as I've heard it called), and having visited Canada almost a half-dozen times in the past few years, it's hard not to get the impression that our neighbors to the north have it better than us! Fortunately, all it takes is a short 90-minute ferry ride on the Black Ball Line's MV Coho, to experience what my wife and I believe may be the most elegant gem in the PNW: Victoria! Boarding in Port Angeles currently four times per day during this, the summer season, this ferry can quickly fill up all of its reservable vehicle spots, particularly on the weekend, so book in advance, if possible! However, if you're like us, who sometimes spontaneously dash out the door with a goal but very little in the way of a plan, you may be forced to do as we did, and choose the walk-on option instead which, fortunately, seems incapable of filling up. For $22.50/person each way ($90 round trip for my wife and I, plus our 2-year-old son, who was free), you can secure a berth onboard the 90-minute jaunt to Vancouver Island, and the capital of British Columbia, Victoria. Just be sure to arrive 30 minutes before departure, at the latest, for boarding. Let me tell you something, folks: If you've never experienced it, the approach to the city in Victoria harbor is truly breathtaking. As the ship slowly glides into the port, the almost eerie silence that accompanies the emerging vistas of old Victorian buildings, castle-like resort hotels, harbors, marinas and bridges has a spellbinding effect on the senses. The city itself seemed as still as the surface of the water below us. Almost everyone onboard was silent, breathless, or awe-struck, while simultaneously scrambling to snap as many pictures, selfies and videos as possible. The sensation was such that I doubt I will ever forget it, and I long to experience it again, as soon as possible. "Magical" and "enchanting" are the closest as adjectives can come to quantify it. On the more mundane side of things, Black Ball makes the whole process very simple, particularly for us walk-ons. There was no line to buy a ticket when we approached the counter, the attendant answered all of our questions competently and clearly, and as for the tickets, one each way accounts for your party by head count, and in all honesty, there's no need to purchase a round-trip ticket ahead of time, since you can always just grab one on the way back, but hey, it's good to plan ahead. Just be sure to bring your passport, as you will obviously need it both ways! Additionally, you will need to fill out a US Coast Guard form with the details of your entire party on the way out, as well as a Canadian Customs Declaration form, the first you will hand to the Captain of the ship upon boarding, and the second you will turn in to Canadian Customs officers, and both of which are simple. Upon returning to the states, there is no such document needed, although you will, of course, have to go through Customs and answer the usual questions. The ship itself, the MV Coho, has plenty of seating throughout, as well as a cafeteria, a souvenir shop, a Duty Free store (which only operates on the return voyage to the US), walkable decks, clean restrooms, and the potential for whale-watching during your jaunt(s) across the Juan De Fuca! There are other ferries to Victoria out there: one departs from Seattle, takes three hours, and costs an arm-and-a-leg more. There's another that disembarks from Anacortes, but drops you off at the dock in Sidney, 18 miles north of Victoria, which is far less convenient, unless you're planning on hopping over to Vancouver instead, but if that's the case, just drive there instead! In short, the Black Ball Ferry Line is your best, cheapest, most convenient, and most competent choice for escaping Gilead...err, I mean, America, and visiting our beautiful, welcoming neighbor to the north!

A well-priced (for passenger travel) ferry service from WA to BC. It's the only ferry currently running this route. You can make reservations well ahead of time, and the walk-on tickets are flexible. The Port Angeles side of things is much roomier but more industrial than the BC side. There's several options for parking nearby as well as a street of eateries, so it's pretty easy to sequence your departure. There's a largeish waiting area. The ferry has several things going for it, including being able to be out on the prow of the ship for almost the entire journey. If it's your first time, definitely go forward to watch the ferry come into the small-but-pretty Victoria harbor. Cellular coverage the entire way as far as my t-mobile service went. This is a big ferry, and was nowhere near full on my off-season trip in early October.

Very very clean! Lots of space and plenty of comfortable seating ... tabkes or cushioned chairs. There is a pretty robust snack bar on as well as a store. The 90 minutes event quickly and we saw Ircas leaning from Port Angeles AND leaving from Victoria

I'm relieved that I haven't encountered many of the issues mentioned in the reviews and comments about this establishment. This is my second time taking the black ball fair line to Victoria. I took the Black Ball Fair Line to Victoria around the same time last year for my birthday, and each time I came away impressed. At the gate, customs forms are available, but they lack pens. Since they won't provide writing materials at boarding, you should bring your own. Additionally, remember to bring your passport. On the boat,  I was always impressed by the tranquility and peace I experienced during my time on the water. The views are breathtaking. The prices I think are reasonable for an adult pedestrian are $20 per ticket. They offer two travel periods, approximately eight in the morning and four in the afternoon, to Victoria, BC. They have duty-free concessions, snacks, maps, brochures, special event offers, and everything on the boat for your consumption. My only concern is the boat furniture and seating maintenance. Travel causes a lot of wear and tear, yet a significant number of seats show signs of damage or deterioration, making them visually distracting. Other than that, the journey from Port Angeles to Victoria is truly breathtaking. Have fun every time!

We took the Coho from PA to Victoria on a Wednesday. The process for boarding is the usual ferry process. The terminal has a border security area for sailings to PA and one on the Victoria side. I was really impressed with the vessel itself. Once you're off the car deck you are in a ship built in the 50's. I've spent a fair amount of my life on ships and one thing is for certain is you can't beat the feel of an older ship. The men who laid this one down are probably long deceased and the Coho is still going. That's a legacy to be proud of. On board you can see all the older style fittings and equipment. I'm very enthusiastic about ships and how they work so my eyes were all over it. There is a galley and gift shop on the main passenger deck. Forward is a main lounge with comfortable seats. There is also access to the weather decks to get some good sea air. I wish I could have seen the pilot house and the main machinery spaces but alas passengers are not allowed. The interior does not reflect modernity. There are no device charging options but there is WiFi. I saw a review where someone complained there was no place to plug in a charger. I say put your screen away and enjoy the vintage feel of a working ship built in the 50's. Get your head out of the internet for 90 minutes and take in some real life. If more people did that we would be much better off. I will ride the Coho again. That's for sure.

Ask the Community - Black Ball Ferry Line

I am highly claustro, how is the experience of driving your car into the ferry? Is it very confined and does it go down under the boat to where you are under water? Also is there stairs to take up to deck or do take a elevator? Once you park can we up?

It's not super confined but you just have to be aware of the space around your car so you don't hit another car while you're pulling in. The parking area is not underwater. None of the passenger area is under water. Once you park your car you can…

Are there overnight parking spots near the ferry?

Yes there are a lot parking lots nearby where cars can be parked for the day or longer!

My previous review, from January 2024. Never got the refund. We did, and the brusque woman driver informed us that they do not recognize reservations. We called their office a few days later for a refund on the seats and were told to call Greyhound. We called Greyhound and were informed that we could not get a refund for the seats because we had boarded the bus (but of course we didn't know the problem until after boarding). Here are four specific reasons: 1. Predictability: From the moment I emailed them for a quote, the response was almost immediate, unlike other companies that take days. They provided detailed information addressing all my questions. We received multiple reminder emails and texts at various stages. This makes us aware that they have everything in order, and we can expect to see them appear at the right time and location. 2. Professional Driving: The ride was smooth with no surprises or sudden moves. After chatting with Dave and Dawn, I learned they had been trained on advanced competitive driving, including skills for handling aggressive drivers, low visibility and slippery roads. 3. Outstanding Service: On our return trip, we accidentally left a baby toy in the vehicle. I was prepared to pay for shipping it back, but Dave delivered it to our home the next morning. This gesture was above and beyond my expectations. 4. Reasonable Pricing: Compared to other companies offering similar services, their prices are very reasonable. Overall, I was really impressed by the quality of car service, especially the predictability. That's the most important factor. I often opted for driving by myself rather than hiring a transportation service because it would introduce another failing point, but they really nailed it with no surprises during and beyond the entire trip. That kind of peace of mind is rare to see and very valuable.

This process was disorganized, frustrating, and a complete waste of time. I ultimately cancelled the reservation and would not trust this company for any future travel. I will be advising others to avoid them as well.
