After a day of hellish travel, we decided to get into a car and travel more. Everyone told us to go to Ashville and it was a great decision. We found Hulu Sue's and there was a parking spot right in front so we decided to come in for lunch. The ambiance was friendly and inviting. Although it was really busy, we were immediately seated at the last indoor table. We ordered the Poke bowl and the combination bowl and a spam appetizer. The started was simple and delicious. I was never on the spam bandwagon, but this simple preparation was fantastic. The poke bowl was delicious. It was a little heavy on the mayo, but all the components were great. I loved the macaroni salad. It was the reason I wanted to come in and I was happy! I sampled some shrimp and chicken from my guy's dish and they were both great-well seasoned and well prepared. I wasn't a fan of the pork, it felt on the dry side. We also noticed that NC likes their sauces. I mean, I like sauces, but I never expect 4-6 options on the table. We tried a little of each and the curry based option and the mustard were my favorites! This is a great find. I didn't realize that small towns still close up shop early on Sundays. While looking for something unique and tasty I saw that this place had been on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives so decided to give it a try. Went on a busy Friday evening the wait time was 45 minutes but I found a spot at the bar. It looks cool inside with all the decor. I started with Lilikoi Mule it was refreshing and I'm a big fan of anything with passion fruit in it. For entree, I ordered the Hawaiian combo bowl which came with Huli chicken, pork katsu, and sweet chili shrimp which was served with rice, Mac salad, and pickled cabbage. Huli Sue's BBQ and Grill is located at 1 Page Ave Ste 150, Downtown Asheville in a beautiful space with indoor and outdoor seating. If you're looking for that savory/sweet heavy caramelized bark, deep pink smoke ring, and meat that melts in your mouth of a brisket or those Big Island flavors of Loco Moco, Hawaiian bowls, and Mahi Mahi look no further. I made the very tough choice to choice the sampler served with juicy brisket, tender pulled pork and succulent ribs with a cornbread that was absolutely out of this world and a side. My side was the very fresh and mellow flavored Cole slaw that I used as a pallet cleanser between meats. On the table they had three BBQ sauces, the LiLikoi gold which was a sweet yet tangy tropical mustard that pared well with the ribs, the Crackseed which had a sweet but peppery flavor and went well with the brisket, and the Paniolo sauce with tasted like a regular BBQ except with a Smokey taste which went great with the pulled pork! The space itself felt just right -- not too big, not too cramped -- and everything was clean (including the bathrooms, which always matters). Food-wise: wow. My husband ordered the Hawaiian teriyaki burger, and I got the Hawaiian combo bowl with huli chicken, pork katsu, and sweet chili shrimp, served with rice, Hawaiian mac salad, and pickled cabbage. We had a good experience at Huli Sue's this last week for dinner. To start - we loved the inside of the restaurant / atmosphere / service / wait staff. Everyone was very nice and offered suggestions. For drinks - I got the Mai Tai - which was tasty. For entrees - I got the brisket nachos and my husband got the brisket sandwich + corn bread. He really enjoyed the corn bread. As for the entrees - the brisket itself was quite good in both dishes. However - I would not order the nachos as your meal...for yourself. By the time you're able to dig into all the nachos - they get a tad gooey/old on the cheese. If it was shared amongst people, it would be better b/c you would eat everything quicker. First stop on our weekend get away was to find some lunch. Checking Yelp, this was a too recommendation near us, so we decided to give it a try. We were given the option of indoor or outdoor seating upon arrival and with nearly perfect fall temps, we decided to dine outside. The server, Ren, was very friendly, and made some suggestions. I got the pulled pork sandwich, as she advised their brisket was a bit more fatty. Given the options of sides, I opted for their Friday special and got a cup of the Brunswick stew. Everything was very tasty, served quickly and just a good starting point to our trip in western NC. I went here for the first time today. My server was Sara, and she was super friendly and helpful in giving recommendations and explaining the menu and specials. I got the Hawaiian Combo bowl because I'm indecisive and wanted to try the pork, Sue's Huli chicken and the shrimp. All three were very flavorful and delicious. My favorite was the chicken- it was so tender and I loved the sauce. The rice was fluffy and the Hawaiian macaroni salad was much better than regular macaroni salad I've had elsewhere. They offer a wide variety of both interior and exterior seating. The interior is themed in a Hawaiian aspect that makes you feel as if you just stepped in a whole different landscape. If you are indecisive like me, this dish is perfect for you. Pork katsu, Sue Huli chicken and 3 extra large sweet chili shrimp served over a bed of rice with pickled purple cabbage and macaroni salad. One of the best lunches I've had in quite some time. Overall was not very impressed. We came here as my friend had come before and really enjoyed it. I didn't share that opinion. I got the brisket nachos, which were pretty to look at and tasted alright but were difficult to eat based on the presentation. I'm not sure how you get all the toppings together when the chips and toppings are spread out like they are. I tried the sweet chili shrimp off my friend's bowl and it didn't pack a lot of flavor. Friends came to Asheville from out of town and wanted to have lunch downtown. I had read the reviews and was intrigued by the Hawaiian Spam Bowl (not its correct name but you get the gist). One of our friends ordered that and declared it delicious!
