We stopped in here on a whim and loved it. He got the ribs, broccoli casserole, and sweet potato crunch. I got the pulled pork. The meats seemed like really good quality and the sauces were tasty. The soda fountain had crunchy, cane sugar soda which was a nice surprise. Big stack of kids games and books in one corner; no kids menu but you could buy small meat portions or sides of Mac and cheese. I especially love that they don't use styrofoam or throwaway anything.0 Only drawback was no french fries! It's tucked away in a strange shopping strip but worth the stop. read more

We're talking burnt ends that were a special and they tasted like they're made in the crockpot. You ever had burnt ends that were crunchy and crispy? All these burnt ends tasted like they've been sautéed. do you like sautéed burnt ends? They want to put these burnt ends on some hashbrowns. Keep the hashbrowns. Love this local stop! The bbq was fresh and the amount you get for the price was reasonable. The brunswick stew is available for a side- it was delicious!! I was really impressed with the cleanliness of the establishment and the friendliness of the staff, they checked on us multiple times. My previous review was for Webo's; this update covers its replacement, Black Bear Barbecue. I like what they are trying to do here, but unfortunately, the food fell flat. At a recent lunch I got a chopped brisket plate with mac and cheese and collard greens. The cashier assured me that, in contrast to the predecessor, everything is homemade now. And a number of upgrades were apparent - real dishes and cutlery versus disposable, a large Asheville-themed wall mural, natural sugar-sweetened sodas in the drinks fountain, and a kiddie play area overflowing with toys. But the food...left me a bit cold still. IMNSHO, the main draw and litmus test for any barbecue joint is the quality and freshness of the meat. Brisket should be fork tender, buttery with beef fat, and smoky without obscuring the beef flavor. This chopped brisket disappointed - it was stringy, overcooked, pulled versus "chopped", and swimming in greasy broth. Really not very good, I'm sorry to say. The mac and cheese was a definite improvement over Webo's food service product, but was a little lacking in flavor. Cornbread was a bit dry. The greens were a poor representation - very sulfurous from being overcooked, with lots of stems and absolutely no hint of smoke, pork, spice, or vinegar. I could only eat them drowning in Carolina vinegar sauce. After eating amazingly flavorful greens at Smoky Park Supper Club, I was struck by the contrast and could understand those who decide they "don't like collard greens" based on this rendition. My friend had the pulled pork plate, which had the mushy texture of canned fish. She also got a smoked chicken breast on the side, which had pretty rubbery skin and tasted mostly of seasoned salt. She was not enthused. I sampled her broccoli casserole and it tasted mostly of Cheez-Its - and not in a good way. I really wanted to like Black Bear, and the folks working there seem genuinely nice, but the food needs work - especially the meats. read more

Very good barbecue; and the sides are really good! With respect to the meat, I have tried the pulled pork, chicken, and ribs. All are very good. Just a quick lunch in a new to us bbq joint. Tucked away in the back corner of a shopping center is some very friendly staff and good food. My wife had the wing's special w/cornbread and green bean sides and I tried the chopped beef w/cole slaw on the side. The wings were tasty and when tried with their variety of sauces you can get different tastes. The cornbread was excellent. The green beans were as expected. The chopped beef was moist and flavorful especially with the spicy sauce (which is not very spicy!). I particularly enjoyed the bun they use for the sandwich. The slaw was very good too. Not a fancy place, but the price is right, the staff is on top of things, the restrooms clean and the bbq is very good. read more

It's cute, I do love the art and black bear motif. The location is a bit to be desired as it's between a bra shop and a clothing shop and the seating is scarce. The clientele are mainly typical Southerners which is fine and suits any BBQ joint. The food is... Okay at best. The price is fair but portions are small, meat is dry, and it feels rather cramped. The sweet tea is not up to par but I'm just picky about sweetness lol. I might give it a go in a few months but not the sort of blow away experience I expected. read more

Keeping up with protocol/mask mandates, being upfront about the service charge. We live around the corner from Black Bear and we always look forward to our meals from here! The hillbilly nachos are our fav nachos in town, and the meats are always fall off the bone tender. Absolutely delicious and these lovely ladies work SO HARD all of the time. They are kind and always in good spirits, despite being super busy constantly. I see a lot of people get frustrated with waiting, but it's worth it to support a local business, especially when the food is exceptional and the staff are outstanding. read more

This is our second time here...first was a couple of years ago and left a good enough impression to return. It was so disappointing. When will we learn that if you don't smell smoke when you enter a BBQ restaurant just turn around and go somewhere else? We ordered the feast so we'd have some good leftovers for a busy week. Got the dry rub as someone else here suggested and they were just awful. There was not any evidence in taste that these were smoked and they were dry, dry, dry. They tasted like old oven baked ribs that had been re-heated and the 'sweet & spicy' sauce was neither, no flavor. I started worrying that we had covid because nothing tasted. Definitely not a southern BBQ place. You can tell right away by the crazy drink menu, wooden utensils, and the extreme Covid restrictions while everyone else is back open for business. Then you get to pay a mandatory 15% Covid charge on all orders. No inside eating or bathroom. All this would be acceptable if the BBQ was super delicious. Ribs were chewy with a decent flavor. Ordered a baked potato as a side but they were out at 4:00 in the afternoon. The ribs were so bad that I could not even finish them. I would say that Webo's has some of my favorite ribs in town. I like a good old-school barbecue place, with southern style cole slaw and beans. Not that I don't like some of the more "exotic" side dishes around town, but it's hard to beat the original. It's easy to find and there's plenty of parking at River Ridge. It's one of the few barbecue places I'll go out of my way to visit. Prices are very reasonable and the people are extra friendly. They do close early at dinner, so it's better for a lunch spot. read more

Ate a Webo's while staying in Asheville on a recent business trip. I'm a huge fan of BBQ, and always make an effort to eat at local restaurants when I am traveling. Found Webo's on Yelp and Roadtrippers.com and tried them out based on excellent reviews. Reviews are well deserved. I ordered the lunch Sampler Plate ($12.75) which included three meats (I got pulled pork, sliced brisket, and sausage) and two sides (I got cole slaw and baked beans) along with a bread option (I got cornbread). Each meat portion was approximately 3 ounces, and had a well balanced smokiness. Pork was delicious, falling apart; sliced brisket had an excellent mix of lean and fat, very tender; and sliced sausage was robust with a snappy casing and bold flavor. I really enjoyed the cole slaw and beans. Cornbread was chunky and warm, with a mild sweetness that would have been better with some butter. Location was close to my hotel, and despite some odd twists and turns provided by my GPS, once you find the location in the corner of a shopping center, there is excellent parking. I was in and out with my takeaway order in well under ten minutes, and counter service was prompt and friendly. read more
