Super nice service from front desk and waiter. Our group was pretty large and he checked in on us often. We all ordered breakfast items and it came out pretty fast. I really enjoyed my steak and eggs, the steak was cooked to perfection medium rare and eggs over medium so it was still runny. Everyone food came out looking good except my father in laws egg Benedict was over cooked. The eggs were hard when you cut into it. It looked like hard boil eggs, I offered to tell the waiter but he said he didn't want to complain so he just picked around it. Other then that it was great! read more

This is my second time eating here, 1st. time I had a Corn Beef Sandwich with fry's and it was terrific. Service was great and they kept our drinks refilled. The second time I came here I got a Chief Salad and it was fresh and tasted great. It did not have any hard boiled egg's on it because the kitchen didn't have anymore, so the waiter gave us a corn muffin instead. Service was great and we had no problems with the place. It's cutely decorated and service is always nice. I don't know what all you other complainers are talking about, but I would have to tell them to stay home. No body wants to wait on crabby people. Black bear diner is a great food stop! They get busy at times, but management is always there helping their staff and making things run smoothly. Staff is very friendly, and attentive. We go early most days, but the one or two people that are there are always tiptop! The food is above average for a diner and they will do almost any modification within reason. I recommend the corned beef hash for breakfast and the beef taco salad for lunch. They have amazing bacon ranch and blue cheese dressings as well. Never been for dinner, although they serve it all day. It may not be a five star fine-dining establishment, but it's definitely a five star diner! (They open at 6:30 am everyday, btw) read more

Yes, BBD is a franchise. Yes, BBD is busy ... you may have to wait. But this location has good cooks, waitresses that move it, and food that is bountiful, hot, and delicious ... especially breakfast. We split the "Joe's Hobo Omelet" that has everything in it that tastes good except a sink. The one biscuit with it was huge, satisfying the two of us, and it was warm and fluffy. Like any restaurant, location and timing are key. There are good days and bad days. I'll bet the great meals at this BBD far outnumber the few disappointed reviews. BTW the service personnel work as a team, are friendly to patrons and other staff alike (how often do you see that?!), and we got good old-fashioned great service. We've had dinner at other BBDs, and the selection and quality has always been excellent. read more

My husband and I ordered sandwiches and they were great. We asked for a side of fruit for our 8 month old and were given 3 cubes of cantaloupe and honeydew and 2 grapes. The honeydew was hard and my baby was unable to eat it. I was most surprised that we were charged $3.99 for the side of fruit. Each of our meals were a little over $10, so for 8 small pieces of fruit for $3.99 is very disappointing. Will not be getting a separate side again. And to top it off, the banana cream pie we ordered to go had hard whipped cream on top. read more

I took my family for dinner. There were 12 of us and we were seated in the back room. The food was excellent but the service was amazing! I've never been so delighted with the service I've received in any restaurant. Rudy was amazing, she made my whole family feel right at home. We were in town due to the Malibu fires in November we went there twice once for lunch and once for breakfast. We went in for breakfast on Monday the 12th of November as we were leaving Forest Hill and back to Malibu. The food is delicious and one of the cleanest restaurants I've been in. I love the atmosphere and the decor. I'm writing this Yelp for the reason why I have been a server of 33 years and 24 years of this is in Malibu. I love meeting people and giving them the best experience and service because I want them to return as your server Giles gave to us. Giles gave us excellent service with a kind smile and a warm welcome. Giles gave us excellent recommendations and acomdated our special requests. Giles was very attentive and made us feel welcomed and we had a fun and friendly conversation about life. Giles thank you so much for being amazing and so kind and excellent service. I was feeling really sad about leaving my two dogs with a family member and going home without them because of our displacement. I will be back to get my dogs and I will be returning for a delicious breakfast and to say hello to a server who made me feel so welcomed like I was a regular in your restaurant. Ordered a Ruben sandwich. It was good, nothing special. Ordered a side salad that they didn't bring until I reminded the waitress. It was very small, came in an ice cream bowl, you know, the ones for 1 scoop. Ordered a side of onion rings for $5.99. There were 8 on the plate. The waitresses change in the middle of our meals, so some people got their meals, others just sat and waited. Then for some reason they waitresses changed back, maybe the original waitress went on break, who knows. But the service was a mess. I won't be excited to return. read more

Came in with a party of 7. Stood at the counter and had to stop someone to let them know we wanted to sit and eat. We were seated in the back room where it was so cold we had to wear coats the entire meal. We asked several times to have the heat turned on, but the vent continued to blow cold air. Stopped by Auburn, Ca location for an early lunch, ordered two breakfast dishes which were generous in portions and very tasty. We eat regularly at this location as well as in Fernley, Nevada...food is always wholesome, well prepared and served on large (and full) plates. Our waitress on this occasion was a young lady (Sierra) who was a delight to talk with. She was efficient and accurate with our order and attentive after serving our food. Could not ask for more! We also eat at Denny's regularly (easier to find than Black Bear when travelling), and have no particular negatives, however if we have a choice, Black Bear wins every time...by a mile!! read more

Worst service I've ever had. The food was OK but the place wasn't crowded and our server tried to give us the bill while we were both still eating. I mentioned we were thinking about ordering desert. That's the last we saw of him (Dustin). Never even refilled our water or ice tea. A half hour later some girl tried to hand us our check again and asked if everything was OK. I said that we wanted to order desert a half an hour ago but just give us the check. Not sure I would go back to this location ever. One of the worst dinning experiences of my life! Asked waitress for a table & she insisted on sitting me at a booth. I am handicapped & big. My breasts were resting on table & the table was pressing against my ribs. When I tried to get out, I almost fell. Food that should have been warm was served cold. Fruit salad consisted mostly of hard cantaloupe with no flavor. There were also 2 grapes & 2 tiny bitter slices of strawberry. The refried beans tasted burned. We stopped for lunch on our way home from Tahoe City and again, Black Bear Diner did not disappoint. I ordered the turkey sandwich with potato salad and my husband got a ranch burger. I admit, it's a bit more expensive than our usual fast food stop at In and Out Burger, but a very refreshing change to say the least. Service was prompt and restaurant was very clean. My experience wasn't very good here, the server forgot a couple things on three out of five plates at our table! The server also added extra charges to my meal that I didn't ask for, which the manager took off of our bill after we asked. It wasn't very busy when we arrived and other people received their meals before us, who arrives after us! It took 30 minutes to get our meals and they didn't even arrive at the same time, so we could all eat together; two of us had to wait an extra 5-7 minutes for our food. Unable to eat at Black bear diner because the people we are with cannot sit in a booth. They had no tables available because the only tables are in the back room where Christmas party is being held. Me and my family come here about once a week if not twice.. this staff is always so welcoming and remember us literally every time we come in.. I always order the same thing amd modify it and they always get it right :) Dianne is the manager there and she is wonderful. Ive worked in this industry for a very long time and I watch and can be a critic when it comes to customer service as well with food quality... this place I've never seen the servers standing around chitchatting with each other like most restaurants ive been to, they are always keeping busy and I see they are a great team helping each other out even if its not their table. They keep their composure when under stress and still seem to smile. I highly recommend coming to this location, this is a great place not cuz the food but because the staff thats make it a welcoming experience each and every time!! read more

The quantity and quality food is good for a medium priced restaurant. There are better restaurants with better tasting food out there but they will cost you twice as much for dinner. Good place for a family because you can have a good meal and not break the bank. We had tri tip and meat loaf dinner with a large salad , baked potato and fresh green beans with no major complaints. Food could be a little warmer when it showed up and music could be turned down a little but service was great. It depends what you want, a high priced restaurant with 25-30% less food that taste excellent or a good reasonable priced restaurant with good food. read more

Stopped here on a recent road trip with my family. I did not know what to expect, but ended up having a really good experience. After being there for awhile we were told the restaurant just opened. You could sort of tell because the wait staff seemed excited. The hostess was super friendly and our waitress was too. I wish I could remember her name, but she was short, petitie, young with brown hair. Very friendly. I ordered the steak salad. It was delicious and the portion was HUGE! I ordered the steak medium-rare and it was a little pinker than I would have liked, but it had great flavor and it didn't have too much dressing. My wife and I like this place for breakfast and lunch after a morning hike on the weekends. We seldom have a wait, the staff is super-friendly and they get things right (my wife is a server's worst nightmare with substitution requests that are mind-boggling and deranged). But most of all the food is consistently good, fresh tasting, and each time I've been there the place was very clean, even with the locust hordes of weekend snow-people passing through. This is only the second time in my life I chose not to leave a tip due to poor service. I went here with my 4 year old and 2 year old. It took about 15 minutes to have somebody ask us what we wanted to drink. Another 10 before our actual server showed up. When placing our order I asked that the kids meals come as soon as they're ready. This is for two reasons; one is kids orders usually cook faster and I don't want their food sitting under the heating lamp while they cook mine and the other is when kids are hungry, they become irritable and difficult to keep chill in a restaurant environment. After about 20 minutes no signs of our server and he doesn't even check to see if we need anything else. I suspect the kids food is ready and can see one of them under the heat lamp. I see him go up there and check several times, but doesn't grab it. I finally walk up there and ask if their food is ready yet and a different server finally brings it all over with my meal. Both of my kids meals had been up there for a while. The grilled cheese was hard and chewy and my son ate very little of it. The french fries that came with my daughter's meal were soggy and old from being under the lamp so long. Even at the end, it was another server who brought us our check. Our actual server failed miserably and thus brought about only the second time in my life that I decided to not leave a tip. And needless to say, we won't be back. read more
