I'm new to Utah and have seen several Black Bear Diners along the 15. I was excited to try the one in Draper. The nice thing is that it is open on Sunday -yay! However, the food was just a tad above "meh". The service was not great but I'm sure it may have to do with everyone experiencing staffing shortages. The inside was a little "beat up" . I think Black Bear had to kill the pig to harvest the bacon, sausage and ham and wait for their one chicken to lay a few eggs. We sat for 20m waiting for our server then waited another 30m to receive our food. We arrived around 8am. There were very few tables occupied so we thought it would be a quick visit. Fifteen minutes into waiting the manager brought us some drinks and apologized that out server was running late (there appeared to be other servers working but I guess they're territorial). The food was diner quality and the coffee was so so. I don't recommend going to Black Bear Diner for breakfast unless you've got an hour to spend waiting. read more

Located across the street from our hotel. Food was pretty good and most everything was $15 and under. Service was pretty good, a little slow but overall ok. Arrived for breakfast about 9:10 am. Seated at 11:00 am. We had a group, so it was not easy to seat us together quickly, nonetheless a long long wait. . Ordered a scramble, Shasta I think. Scramble was ok, but the side of sausage was a hamburger patty. Toast never did come. Drink and coffee refills were prompt, I think the issue was in the kitchen. The wait staff tried hard I think to keep things moving, but without a kitchen to back them up, it is unfortunate. Really, a hamburger patty to pass off as sausage patty?? No toast at all. I might a little generous with this one. I've been here a few times before. They are busier than usual, but this is crazy. I've been here for about a half an hour. It took 10 minutes to get someone so I could place my order, & I've been waiting for 23 minutes & 21 seconds for foods. Yes that's accurate, as I'm sitting at the bar & can see my order on the screen. This is something like an episode of Hell's Kitchen! The line manager barking out orders, when the kitchen crew flies around yelling "Yes, Ma'am!" & "Thank you, Ma'am!" If it wasn't so entertaining, I would have walked out. Our waitress didn't understand the menu. She said it was her first day. Which we were completely understanding about. Once our food started coming out she mixed up our orders. We never got refills, or condiments. She put the wrong toppings on all the French toast. My friend waited for her messed up order for 30 minutes as well as my step mom. We tried to cancel so we could leave but the manager refused to cancel and said they would put it in a box. We were never offerd any comps on our order or discounts the manger didn't even apologize or try to make it better. Awful experience Definitely won't return. read more

It pains me to give only a 2-star rating to BBD. This is a chain my wife and I frequent, and we usually enjoy it a lot. BBD is well known for large portions of good food at fair prices. Indeed, we've been to numerous locations around Utah and in other states as well. Why the low rating? Because this location provided a very poor service experience. Getting seated was no problem, but everything went downhill from there: long wait times just to have our server acknowledge us; even longer wait times for simple glasses of water to arrive; one of our orders was completely wrong, and it took a while for the proper dish to arrive (though it was delivered by the manager); lengthy times with empty drink glasses waiting for our non-existent server to come around for a refill; etc. I would love to say it was just us, but the folks at the table next to us were having the same poor experience and they weren't happy about it, either. I hope this was just a bad day for our specific server. Our personal experience has shown that BBD typically offers *far* better service than this. Nevertheless, my wife and I aren't looking forward to ever returning to this location. read more

I love, love, love breakfast, so when I discovered the Black Bear Diner I was ecstatic! I go and have breakfast nearly every time regardless of the hour. The freshly squeezed orange juice was the first thing to win me over. Everything was executed properly and the kids menu had some fun and challenging games. Unfortunately, the worst thing was the service. Although very friendly, not entirely there or quick. We ordeal corn muffin to snack on while we waited, but didn't come until after the rest of the food. The breakfast bowl was made to my very specific needs and was amazing!! BUT, our pancake didn't come until we asked about it 4 times, and after our food was pack, check came and everyone used the bathroom. The portion sizes are big and the food is pretty good (as with all Black Bear Diners I've been to). The problem was the wait time. The place was nearly empty when we rolled in and no one was hosting. We kind of stood around for a few minutes and finally had to walk further in to get someone's attention. After we ordered (with still almost no one else in the restaurant) it took a good 45 minutes or more for our food to come out. It was probably under-staffed for an off-period, but management's decision to penny-shave at the cost of decent customer service and speed is pretty sad. So if you're not in a rush, the food is good and this place isn't a bad choice. If you have any kind of time constraint, go somewhere else. read more

Been to a couple Black Bear Diners and they generally taste pretty good. We usually go with breakfast food which I love. Portions are huge. Seriously. You can order to share. This last time we tried the cinnamon french toast and it was so-so. I'd get it again but I didn't love it. It was a good idea but could have been improved. We also tried the turkey sandwich and it was mediocre. If they didn't offer breakfast food here I'm not sure I would recommend it. But their omelets, waffles and pancakes are very good. read more

Awesome spot. The service was great! We went in 45 minutes before they closed, with a party of 20, on Christmas Eve. I felt so bad but we just arrived from Vegas and had nothing. They were the only ones open! (Near our hotel in Draper at least) The portions were large and everything came out fast. I was very pleased with this diner. Our server was friendly and prompt. I tried the huevos rancheros for the first time, and was not disappointed. The house-made salsa was very nice, and I enjoyed the fresh chopped bell peppers in the home fried potatoes. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

Lots of options in town for a quality, well cooked, pleasing presentation, tasty breakfast- however my experience with Black Bear Diner in Draper this morning provided non of the above and will definitely make me rethink another visit or recommendation. Ordered a meat omelette with red potatoes and biscuit. Omelet was folded egg with minimal "meat" sprinkled on top. The red potatoes were cool, and even after using one full serving of butter and jam on each half of the biscuit, I used an entire glass of water to get it mostly down- read very dry. Manager and server were both very attentive and spoke with the kitchen. Let me say that I have never been disappointed by my standby favorite-Midvale Mining Cafe. So will most likely not stray so far from home in the future for a top quality breakfast. read more

Service was very, very slow. Got seated quickly then took forever for our waitress to acknowledge us. Food was so-so. My wife ordered wheat toast and got marbled rye that was dripping in butter. I hate the fact that a restaurant that offers huge pancakes only gives a tiny container of syrup. You have to ask for more and they act like it's taking a lot out of them to bring it. I finally had to ask for a coffee refill, but that was after the waitress finally came back after ~20 minutes. I did not get asked if I wanted a 3rd refill. Dessert was never offered. It's unfortunate that this place has such a service problem. It's one of the few sit down restaurants open on a Sunday. read more

The overall experience was like watching this guy claiming he'd do a front flip into a pool and end up with a big flop. My food was lukewarm at best, I ordered hash browns on the side that cost an extra $3.75 which is equivalent 2/3 cost of an entire plate. For that price, it's incredibly disappointing. The hash browns were inedible. It looked and tasted raw. I was lucky to find 3 crunchy bits. My husband's grandmother asked for extra crispy hash browns and her still looked like a sloppy mess. Our waitress didn't know what she was doing at all. She didn't suggest anything, was confused on the orders. She did refill the waters and drinks quite often. Overall, $3.75 for sloppy raw hash browns is a pass. I'm definitely never going back there again. read more

Get the 2 egg combo it includes a pancake, your choice of meat and hash browns or country potatoes..but the menu doesn't tell you about the pancake. We thought we would give this place 1 more shot but we are officially done. It just never improves. We went with our kids for my birthday. Just because it's close and has variety. Slowwww wait staff. It took forever to take our order and even longer to make our food. If you have kids, don't bother. Even the most patient child will start to lose it. The food quality was all over the map. Overcooked eggs on eggs Benedict. Fail. Turkey dinner meal swimming in enough gravy for all of the customers. Fail. Overeasy eggs tasted like they were cooked in a hot sink. FAIL. I do have to say I love black bear diner and I have had good food from there. My husband and I ordered New York steak and eggs which was 16.95 a . We both ordered our steak medium rare It came out medium well it was the worst steak I have ever had. I don't return food because I am afraid of what I will get back so I ate a little bit of it. When we went to pay they didn't even ask us how the food was or how was our experience. I would just stick to ordering dinner there. I hope this review helps in the fact they can use it as a learning tool for their cooks. I also think their food is a over priced. We usually go to Jim's but decided to try something new. I can order the same quality of food there and at a five dollar difference and it is cooked better. read more
