We enjoyed our late breakfast today and I was happily surprised since older reviews were somewhat negative. First, we were there mainly because my daughter had gift cards that had been donated by the restaurant to our local FFA chapter fundraiser! We really appreciated their support for this outstanding program at the high school. We ordered steel cut oatmeal, a special French toast, sides of bacon and fruit. Food was delivered quickly, it was beautifully presented, and very tasty. The French toast came with fruit, too. I was impressed that there was much more than merely cantaloupe and grapes! Two kinds of melon, grapes, pineapple, orange, and sliced strawberries! Bacon was delicious and cooked perfectly. Service was excellent. There were plenty of waitresses, and our waitress checked on us several times. Only a short wait to be seated and then our very friendly waitress was quick to take our order and bring our food. Last straw!! We went spent 10 minutes waiting on a table for 2. Two groups came in after us (already waiting for 10 minutes) of 9 people. The big groups got seated before us?? I left at the point never going back... other times we've gone the wait for the food is a average of 30-40 minutes, after you put your order in, not to mention the food is over priced and mediocre. As was well until you try to call them, they literally will NOT answer the phone now matter how many times you call them. Not only that but when I was there I had a mimosa and it tasted rancid as if the orange juice was expired. Came for dinner as you walked in there was a chalk reader board that read "Prine rib dinner $17.99." Choice of wine Cabernet or Chardonnay and pie. Great deal! I ordered my meal and asked about my wine. The waiter said he would have to ask the manager and that someone had said that earlier. I said the sign said it came with wine. The portions are enormous. Our server was fast and polite. Not to mention we had a party of 28 so I didn't expect her to be fast but our food came within 30-40 minutes and it was delicious. Our waitress was very nice, but alas the food was barely satisfactory. First it took more than a half hour to come and then the burgers were so over cooked they were hard to chew. Let me preface this by saying that the service was good. Absolutely their cooks are unable to cook eggs at all. I ordered over medium well and got almost sunny side up eggs. My bacon was not cooked completely it was pretty raw. They did take that back and cook it in the microwave but the eggs were so runny I couldn't eat them. The basket was actually cold as well. So I recommend you don't eat here breakfast unless you just like over easy eggs and call biscuits. So twice in three months and nothing changed. read more

We ate at this restaurant during the 3:00 hr, it was not a busy time. We had a good waitress, ordered our food, all standard quo. My girl ordered a tri-tip french dip with fries, with cheddar as the cheese as an addition This is a $12.00 sandwich!!!. I ordered another tri-tip sandwich with fries also. It took a while for our food, seemed odd being not overly crowded, but that happens. When our food DID arrive, it looked good, but her sandwich had onions and mushrooms that was not ordered as any an upgrade, was not ordered that way. We told the waitress, she removed her plate politely, and thats where things went WRONG. 1ST, they did NOT remake The sandwich they just pulled the mushrooms and onions off and put the Bun back together! We thought it seemed really fast considering it was about 3 minutes from removal to return...They did not re-heat anything on the plate and then brought her back the same plate that she had already been eating off of! We know this because she had ketchup on the plate for her fries! This I believe is a violation of health code here in Oregon, they took a plate away from a table, and returned the same plate BACK. What about cross-contamination???? sneezing, spitting...etc. etc. We REFUSED to eat it and sent it away, then were actually asked if we wanted ANOTHER SANDWICH!!!!! WHY NOT JUST DO THAT AFTER YOU MESSED IF UP!!???? They didnt even use a fresh bun, it by this time had become soggy from sitting on the plate! fries and ajus were cold...when we pointed this out AGAIN, the waitress even commented they should have made a new sandwich. The POINT HERE, is what if she had an ALLERGY to either of these items THEY PUT ON???? The manager did not address this at our table, never saw her, until I went to pay bill. My food was "ok" but I would have left it ALL behind after the REDICULOUS actions by the staff.... Personally they should have comp'ed the meal, but ok. I told the manager that it could have been extreamly bad for them had she had a major allergy to the added items, she could have cared less, showed NO honest concern other than getting the transaction overwith to get me away from the counter due to customers waiting.... We called corporate and after being talked to extremely rudely they actually hung up on us! So apparently the restaurants don't fall too far from the corporate tree of not Caring at all about their customers and their experience ...... 1st time after years of eating with them in parts of the state, we have had a bad experience from a black bear...WILL NEVER SPEND OUR MONEY WITH THIS CHAIN AGAIN. Will be dealing with the Yamhill county health division also, so ANGRY to be treated that way after enjoying their food till this. This one should be avoided. read more

My husband and I enjoyed generous portions of homestyle cooking at the Black Bear Diner in Newburg, Oregon. The atmosphere was pleasant and the server was kind and friendly. We would make this a regalar eating place if we lived in the area. We ordered a small individual pie before we left. It was huge, and delicious! I did not give this a five because I thought the breaded coating on the trout took away from its distinct flavor. Also, the turkey was a bit dry. After a day of unpacking we decided to take my parents who had been helping us to black bear dinner. I knew it had only been opened a month or so but I figured everything should be good. We got there and had to wait for about 20 minutes but it was clear there was empty sitting. I assume they didn't have enough waiters/waitress to cover all the tables. Once we were sitting our waitress took our drink over.. Everything was fine but then it came time for the food order and this is where is went down hill.. Both my mom and I ordered chicken parmesan. On the menu it says Tender boneless chicken breast, hand-breaded in seasoned flour & panko, deep-fried then topped with Nonna's marinara and mozzarella cheese. Served with penne pasta, Nonna's marinara and seasonal vegetables.. And above this section of the menu it says Complete dinners start with a cup of soup or house salad served with a freshly baked corn bread muffin. All entrées are served with seasonal vegetables plus your choice of red-skinned mashed potatoes with country gravy, French fries, onion rings OR baked potato (after 4 p.m.) unless otherwise noted. After telling her we wanted the chicken parmesan she didn't ask us any question so we both stopped her and said we would like mashed potatoes and then told her our dressing choice for our salads. We thought it was odd but maybe she had spaced the choices or something. Then our food came... we both received a chicken parmesan but all that was on our plate was the chicken and the mash potatoes. My mash potatoes had some gravy on it but my mothers didn't.. We didn't have our vegetables, the noodles and we never got the corn bread muffins. I was a little in shock. So we flagged our waitress down and asked if we could get our noodles.. She actually told us no.. She said because we got mash potatoes we didn't get the the noodles since that was our carb.. We asked her to get a menu so we could show here that we got the option to choose between mashed potatoes, french fries, onion rings, or backed potato.. even after seeing the menu she disagreed but said she would do it for us this time.. Like we were wrong. We also mentioned everything else that was missing..and she seemed to get more frustrated with us. I decided to get up and speak with a manager away from the table. I explained what happened.. it was annoying has well for the remainder of our table because they were eating but trying to go slow so they wouldn't finish before we finally got all or food. The manager agreed that we should have got both and would speak to the waitress. In the end she did discount our meal but it left a bad taste in our mouth. A month or so after visiting black bear we got the chance to eat at Js diner and we would prefer to go there in the further. read more

We went here after my daughters dance recital. We were a group of 8 and as such I expected we might wait a while to be seated. I was pleasantly surprised by our short wait. Unfortunately once we were seated the waitress was less than attentive as coffee and water cups drank themselves dry and I was forced to scavenge creamers from the nearby wreckage of an abandoned table. During the 90 minute wait for our food my kids became dangerously hungry. They threatened to eat their crayons and numerous pouty faces had to be unpouted. When our food did arrive a collective sigh of relief went up around the table as we began to eat our gigantic meals. While I shoveled the meal into my starvation ravaged face I was astonished to see my wife not eating. Somehow the wait staff had exactly failed to bring my wife's taco salad and didn't even notice... My wilting wife sat for 5+ minutes staring at our plates in a crestfallen manner before we walked to the kitchen area to speak with our waitress about the whereabouts of her missing taco salad. The waitress reported that they were confused because our table had multiple taco salads... ...so clearly it was our fault(?) 10 minutes later her salad arrived with little fanfare and no apologies. The food overall was good (I'd say 3.5/5) but where the Black Bear flops like a fish on a dock is in their service. Our lunch took a total of 2 hours from top to bottom and the place was MAYBE half full. I expected something to be comped in our meal simply because I could have watched a full length feature film during the course of it, but add to that the fact that they 100% forgot to prepare a meal AND didn't even notice, but apparently that doesnt rise to the "comp" level... I debated pushing the issue but truthfully I was just ready to go and didn't want the fight. So disappointed!!! We gave this place 3 tries since we had so loved the Black Bear in Beaverton. This third time was NOT a charm!!! Service was lousy...slow and unresponsive. Asked for ketchup x3 and they finally brought us back the same empty bottle they had taken away originally. Asked for lemon X3 before the host finally brought us some. And the food was horrible. Great new place here, outstanding all around! Half of our party got breakfast as it's served all day, and half got dinner! Portions are pretty darn big and will fill you up and leave extras unless you can eat a lot! Also the desserts are delicious. Will definitely be back again! It's a little more expensive about $10-$15 per meal but with the amount of food you get, definitely worth it. Also you can get smaller portions for a lower price or a healthy and fit meal as well. Once again we were disappointed by the Black bear diner. We've been at many of them over the years even the original and they were fantastic. I had the taco salad with the chicken it was obvious that the chicken was just something taken out of a package it had hardly any flavor. The ice tea tasted like it had been sitting around for quite a while. It took forever to get our food which is kind of silly considering the fact that the restaurant is only able to hold maybe half the amount of people that it could and it was not full by any means. The salad looks huge but when you got right down to it it was basically a bunch of lettuce. I have to make the avocado was delicious. They did bring me a sweet tea instead of regular and it did taste better. My father got chicken Parmesan. The chicken looks dry and the cheese and I even melted on the top the best part of that plate was the broccoli. It saddens me to say that I'm disappointed once again by the blackbear diner they used to be so good and so delicious. I also ordered the chicken apple sausage for my children it was sliced in half and we overcooked and not juicy at all it was very dry and very good. Next time I'll know that it's better just to wait for Other places to open then settle for this place I would not suggest going there if I was you. read more

I love this place so far! Ate there three times on my birthday week . First meal was the corned beef hash and eggs over easy, which was yum! Second meal was supposed to be the fancy salad with tuna, they were out of tuna so dubbed with the grilled chicken, the blue cheese dressing is amazing! Third time they were extremely busy....took 10 mins to find a parking spot and longer to get a table so we just ordered to go. It's so sad to see such good ingredients, ambience, and service spoiled by a totally inept kitchen staff. Been here two times with identical experiences. The first time the restaurant was completely full so I thought just maybe that was why it took almost an hour to get our food, but alas I was wrong. The second time the dining room was maybe half full. It still took nearly an hour and the fries were cold and not fully cooked, the hash browns were burnt, the omelette only had a couple spoonfuls of ingredients in it, and the pancakes were made on a dirty grill - resulting in cakes speckled with the charred remains of someone else's sub-par entree. I felt really bad for our servers who did an excellent job. I just hope they aren't mandated to tip out these so-called cooks. We will not be returning to this establishment. read more

We decided to check this place out for dinner- the lighting is horribly bright and made us feel uncomfortable. Fish and chips -fries were pale and limp, oozing oil. Fish appears to be from the freezer, soft and very greasy. Coleslaw swimming in water. Son got the Griz- very generous portions - however, hash browns were oily and cold in the middle. Bacon was swimming in grease. Pancakes were good. I ordered pecan crusted trout which was I liked, with sautéed veggies, somewhat skimpy -and red mashed potatoes. Was supposed to come with gravy which I ordered and was absent - pancakes arrived without syrup. Won't be returning anytime soon. read more

We have eaten at black bear about 5-6 times and have had ok experiences. About a month ago, we went in for breakfast. We had the worst restaurant experience we've ever had. Our waitress was rude and our portions were skimpy and undercooked. The short version of what happened: We waited five minutes up front to be seated. We had to look back into the kitchen to find the waitress on her phone. She didn't say hello or apologized that we had to walk back into the restaurant to look for her. She barely said anything to us our entire visit and not once did she use an entire sentence. When she came to check in on us, she never even stopped fully at our table. Just leaned in and walked away. We were only one of TWO occupied tables in the place, she definitely had time to spare. She left us with over 10 minutes to look at the menus before coming back to take our order. So we just had to sit there and wait, we almost got up to get her from the kitchen. When it was time to pay after we had to seriously flag her down to get our check, she hardly said anything and left the counter and register immediately after giving us our copy of the receipt to sign. That felt like sensitive information (someone could have changed our tip, etc) to leave unattended in the counter. (In case you're worried, we did leave a small tip. Believe me, she did not deserve it. But we know that servers aren't usually paid fairly) I was fuming when we left. It was unbelievably bad. So I left feedback through Black Bear's website instead of letting the world know how horrible our breakfast experience was. The owner called me the next day and was apologetic and we had a nice chat. She said she'd be mailing us a voucher for a free pie. It's been over a month and we still haven't received anything. So now here we are, public review. Horrible awful experience and no follow through from the local store owners. read more

First visit since opening, it was a late dinner on a Sunday evening after a busy weekend. Not many people, but a 5 minute wait for a table. Family ordered the kid's burger, meatloaf and a BLT. Hard to mess up a burger and a BLT. Meatloaf had a LOT of fillers and according to husband, was mediocre in flavor. No refills on iced tea ($2.79). Restaurant closes at 10, but they started vacuuming with the world's loudest vacuum at 9 pm. We'd already been there an hour and had just gotten our food. People around us were laughing at the vacuum. What a nice touch. No need to go back, we could have been in and out of J's in less time, with better tasting food and iced tea refills. read more
