I stopped here for breakfast one Saturday morning. It was rather busy which probably explains the slow service. I ordered from the "make your own breakfast" section of the menu. Two scrambled eggs, two pork sausages, and 2 sweet cream pancakes were what I assembled. The eggs and sausages were good but the pancakes...oh those pancakes were amazing. They were so light and pillowy soft inside and the flavor was delightful. They provided a small ramekin of syrup, which wasn't nearly enough for these two large suckers, but I never could flag down our waiter to get more. Sigh. We are seniors who are no longer able to cook for ourselves. Black Bear in Newberg was a perfect choice, and we ate there several times per month. Value = lots of good food at a reasonable price. My wife loved their ham and chose Bear's Choice breakfast or Fried Chicken; I loved the monstrous Taco Salad and Shasta Veggie Scramble. I will never be coming here again. I saw the waitress tear a menu out of an 80 year old man's hands and tell him and his wife to leave because he had a catheter hook up due to some illness. He even had the bag hidden under his pants so as not to bring undue attention to it. What and evil waitress. Where's the compassion in the world anymore. I loved the cottage ambiance as soon as you stepped inside the door! The menus were on old style newspapers which was a cute touch. The placemats told their restaurants's back story brining at Mt Shasta. I ordered the ham steak, wheat toast & orange juice. The ham was so juicy! The orange was ridiculously yummy (tasted hand squeezed). My husband ordered bacon, scrambled eggs & grits. He said this was the best breakfast he's had since moving to OR 5 years ago. We had an OK lunch at Black Bear Diner in Newberg, Oregon. Black Bear Diner is a national restaurant chain with, at the time of writing this review, over 150 locations in over a dozen states. Most locations are on the West Coast, but there are a few as far east as Missouri and Arkansas. The type of cuisine served is classic American. This restaurant worked out for our group of eight because: (1) we were in the area doing a wine tour (Willamette Valley / Oregon Wine Country) and this restaurant's location was convenient to the wineries/vineyards we went to and (2) the restaurant was able to accommodate our somewhat large group, as walk-in customers, in fairly short order (we didn't have a reservation and I don't know if this place even takes them). This was on a Saturday around 1:45pm. While the restaurant is spacious and had plenty of open tables, we had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table to be prepared for us. Maybe they were short-staffed. Black Bear Diner is old-fashioned Americana. From the outside in, the atmosphere is like dining in a wooden lodge, complete with brick fireplace, antler chandeliers, and art and decor featuring black bears and images evocative of the American West. I like it. In the front, they had a small display case of various pies, cobblers, cakes, brownies, and other desserts. The menus looked like black-and-white newspapers and were titled, "The Black Bear Gazette." They even have a jukebox. Neat. The menu had an extensive selection and I thought the prices were reasonable, at least, for what I got. I had the Homemade Meatloaf ($11.89) from the "Little Less" Dinner section of the menu. Little Less dinners include seasonal vegetables and red-skinned mashed potatoes with country gravy. In other words, less calories and healthier. My meatloaf was made with a "special recipe of ground beef and seasoned sausage," roasted and topped with beef gravy and a deep-fried onion ring. I can't remember if I substituted my seasonal vegetables out with one of Black Bear Diner's regular "homestyle" sides, Italian green beans with bacon. Regardless, that's what I had as my vegetable (green beans and bacon). Overall, the meal wasn't anything to write home about, but it was filling and satisfying nonetheless. I like this kind of food, and meatloaf in particular, and it wasn't bad. It served its purpose. On the menu, I noticed they offered all-you-can-eat fried fish for $15.99 (includes fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, and tartar sauce) on Fridays after 4pm. They also have prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays after 4pm. In general, I think Black Bear Diner is ideal for families with kids, groups, and for a casual breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's easy. Service was good. Our server was polite and efficient. The hostess was fine. Not the warmest welcome. The section where our table was located, at the southeast corner of the dining room, was frigid. The AC was cranked up way too high. One of us had to go to the car and get some jackets. read more

I'm so sick of ordering one thing and being brought something else 2 times now I ordered fried chicken and was brought chicken fried steak not fried chicken. They need to get servers who are not understand what a person is saying and get things right. Then was told that I didn't have to pay for it but low and behold it was not taken off my bill and I had to pay for it anyway Never ever going back And the wait person thought it was funny. I really want to like this place but they aren't fantastic. The steak is overly salty, the mashed potatoes are rehydrated, but at least the kids pancakes are massive. The servers are always friendly to us, and the atmosphere is not overtly warm but isn't cold shoulder either. We will be back as there aren't a lot of pancakes for dinner options in Newberg, but it's not a first choice. read more

This place is good old country cooking, and has the best of breakfast, lunch and dinner anywhere. Our favorite is the meatloaf dinner. It comes in a regular meal or light meal. Similar to our experience in Sparks, it seems the Newberg Black Bear has issues keeping up with demand. Food took a really long time to get delivered, and to be honest, it was mediocre at best. I know other restaurants in Newberg closed, so that may be part of it, but it appears there is a training issue the staff at Black Bear need to get under control. read more

The guest experience was the worst I have ever had in any restaurant we arrived for a party of 20 and the front room with two large tables. I was told we were waiting on there was one group of people still eating so we waited approximately an hour to hour 10 minutes when they began feeding us and we tried to use both of the long tables we were told only one table was forced and it was another party because someone else was waiting so we would have to make it work at the other table mind you we have two high chairs and two booster seats there was no way this was possible they didn't care and they made a squish in with a completely different family in the room, part of my family left super mad about the way they were talked to and having a very bad beginning to was supposed to be a great Father's Day lunch. I ordered the fish sandwich which was on special and it came out. Both pieces on my sandwich were burnt. My hostess had an attitude because she had to do so many single checks because not everybody's married and paying for $500 with the food for a large group she had an attitude the entire time the hostess was rude in the end when we complained they threw a five dollar black bear gift buck at us as if that was going to help the matter. I told them to keep it that we would never be coming back ever I could've went to McDonald's and had a better guest experience. I am appalled that they think this type of guest service is five star rated it's a joke if you're more than four people good luck and if you like mediocre food, you'll fit right in. read more

Planned a family reunion for Father's Day to spend time with my uncle and family. We arrived at 12:00 and told the hostess we had a party of 20. (Granted we also called ahead of time to inform them) She told us it would be about a 30 minute wait. We waited close to an hour. We were told that the front room would be ours as soon as another party left. We were finally told it was ready and when going in to be seated we were put at a table that could barely fit 15. The hostess was extremely rude and informed us that the other table was for another party and that we would have to make it work. We had children and babies so extremely crowded. There was no way for 20 people to fit at this table, so 3 of us ended up leaving. Not a pleasant Father's Day experience. We will not be going back. read more

If you are a single head for the counter. Almost always no waiting. There can be some waiting even if you have a group or more than one person. It does seem to move very fast but then when you enter you wonder why you were waiting at all. They have a machine that juices the orange right there for you. This is just an example of the kind of extra steps taken in the kitchen making the food here stand a little bit above other places. It's a standard set by a franchise. Making it stand out as each location is run a little bit differently and a little bit differently laid out. Service is always good and the staff keeps moving. Felt like everything is a little bit bigger. Larger than size egg servings. Bacon was actually thick cut. French toast was thick cut yet soft all the way through because it was clearly soaked well in an egg mixture. Seems a little exactly sized just a little bigger. Keeping up with the Bear theme.
