Not doing free delivery during the Covid shut down like J's is. Why would I pay a huge delivery fee for a chain restaurant when I can order with free delivery locally, and where most items are made from scratch, at J's. Fuxx Black Bear. Black bear is the story of a near miss. First off, it has a clean, fun bear motif with a loghouse style decor. that is the best part. It has the same three squares diner food you find at any chain like Sharis, Ihop, Denny's, etc. What they lack is something that sets them apart to make them great, and the speed of a well managed chain restraunt. Once they had it. They had these seven grain pancakes that were unique, super tasty, moist, and had me coming back. The lunch options are pretty standard fare, and a couple interesting dinner dishes if you have the belly for 1500+ calories in a single sitting. The last part, the saddest, is the slow service. Every time i went, their service is slow. Its the worst for dinner during the weekdays. The manager must send most of his cook staff home, because on a weeknight with under a dozen tables taken, and it took over an hour for an order for three people to appear. The wait staff was embarrassed. I asked about the cook staff and they said they are cooking their hearts out. She wouldnt admit there wasnt enough people back there, but i can see back and see only two people. What would happen if the entire place filled up? They would lose people in droves. Anyway, dont go here unless you have a large book to read or nothing to fill your evening with. or you want to pick up some bear themed Pj's for your grandkids. read more

We were seated right away which was a plus a this place is known for long waits to be seated. Our waitress was really friendly and took our order right away. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with red potatoes and eggs. Waited about 15 mins for the food to arrive. When it arrived I was presently surprised at how large the portions were...my biscuits were HUGE!!! However, I was quickly disappointed at the flavor and temperature of the meal. The gravy on the biscuits had no flavor to it and was very cold! I tried scrapping off the gravy to at least salvage the big fluffy biscuit underneath but that just ended up with me smearing tasteless gravy all over the rest of the meal. I really wanted to like this breakfast as I have had lunch here before and it was pretty good. Unfortunately it looks like we will be going elsewhere next time. read more

My new favorite restaurant! We wanted breakfast so we gave it a try. Clean restaurant, very friendly people and excellent food. I had the chicken fried steak so tender you didn't need the knife to cut it as a matter of fact the best I have ever had. My husband had the beef brisket it was also tender with excellent flavor. Huge homemade biscuits even larger and not as dry as Sybils in Salem. Huge portions of food more like how a truck stop would feed you. You have to take some home they feed you so much. Brought dessert home haven't tried it yet but it looks delish. Love the atmosphere so much to look at and all cute little bears are adorable. We will definitely will be back. read more

Stopped here for lunch on a quick visit through Newberg. Despite what other review said-We did not wait at all for a table. We were told the chicken fried steak and biscuits were their signature dishes. My dining partner got the chicken fried steak and I ordered the chicken pot pie... Only to be told about five minutes later that they were out. So, I ordered the chicken and waffles instead. The chicken was outstanding. Cooked very well with a flavorful gen seasoned crust. The waffle was more like a piece of dense cake then an actual waffle. Also came with a thimbleful of syrup. Service was very friendly, albeit slow. If I'm back in the area again I would definitely give it another shot. read more

Newberg has been in serious need of more breakfast options. While Black Bear Diner isn't going to become THE breakfast place in Newberg, it is the best option until our long awaited breakfast messiah is born. The portions are famously large. A side of hashbrowns was more like a pile. I think prices are more than reasonable. There is a great variety of options on the menu. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Waitresses assisted us that were not assigned to our table. My favorite part is the atmosphere. Growing up I would go to Gatlinburg, Tennessee with my family. Black Bears and cabins are the standard in Gatlinburg so eating here brought warm feelings of family fun to my heart. This nostalgia is enough to make me want to go back. I am glad we now have some good comfort food options nearby. read more

That's it....no mustard no tomato....just dry meat. I got this through doordash so unless I want to wait even longer im stuck with this. Excited that Black Bear opened a location in my town. I frequent a few of their NorCal locations on business trips. Great breakfast and service as usual. I regularly order a Denver omelet and substitute egg whites, and this location did a great job with generous portions. Patricia, my server tonight, was totally awesome. She has a great personality and provided the appropriate amount of attention. Black Bear really created a wonderful family restaurant with a very warm and welcoming atmosphere- something definitely needed in our town. This location being a new build and recently opened , one recommendation would be to use lower wattage or lower lumen bulbs in the outer ring of seats and bar area. I'd recommend something with 25-50% lower wattage or lumens, maybe change to a less powerful color tone, and/or put the lights on dimmer switches. The lights were so insanely bright at the breakfast bar tonight that they triggered a substantial migraine which almost became a medical situation for me. I'm not someone that gets migraines with any regularity and this was an unusual occurrence. Within about five minutes of being seated I started to get a debilitating headache and experience a temporary reduction of vision in one eye. Please, please, please do something to improve the lighting situation. Once I recognized what was happening I spoke up and thankfully my wonderful server and a management person were able to quickly reseat me in an area with less light. The problem then subsided shortly thereafter. Patricia and her manager were very accommodating. If they hadn't been quick to respond things could have ended differently. Overall I found great food, excellent service, and I'm really excited to see this place succeed in our town. read more

We are traditionally fans of Black Bear, our first experience in Newberg was just ok. We visited the restaurant at 7:00 pm on a Friday evening after the dinner rush. It took over 15 minutes for our waitress to greet us at our table, she seemed to be overseeing way too many tables. It took 45 minutes to get our food most of which was cold (hash browns, french fries and pancakes). We overheard several other tables stating they didn't get some of the extras with their food i.e. ordered sides, cornbread or toast. I am sure we will be back, its nice to have a Black Bear Diner in Newberg. Being that the restaurant opened less than two months ago, I'm hoping the service and food quality will improve over time. So many options on the menu for everyone even kids. The footprint of the restaurant is fairly large, a lot of seating (tables and booths). Restrooms were clean, minus one stall in the women's which didn't have a toilet installed yet. read more

Don't bother. Our party of four showed up at 7pm on a Saturday and the place was dead. We were told we needed to wait 10-15mins, which was fine, although it seemed unnecessary since there weren't many people there. After 20 minutes of waiting alone in the lobby and watching four parties pay and leave, we just left for the local diner. It wasn't until we were walking out the door that we were told they were just going to clean our table. There was a wait to be seated, but that's to be expected with a new restaurant on a Saturday morning. The service was slow, but our server was apologetic and accommodating by bringing out corn bread while we waited. It was clear that the kitchen was running behind. Once we got our food it became clear that some of the food waited under heat lamps until other parts were ready. My wife ordered the California Bacon Benedict and had to ask for more avocados as what was delivered had been turned to mush waiting for the eggs to cook. The staff were happy to bring the replacement. Once I finished with my omelette, I went to try to take on the massive biscuit that came with, but was turned off when I found a hair in it. We called the server over again and she apologized and said she would send her manager over. This is where the two star rating comes from. The manager, Kevin, came over and was immediately cold and stand-offish. We explained our experience and in a light-hearted manner my wife said that it looked like a dog hair and we chuckled a bit. We know it wasn't a dog hair. No restaurant is going to have a dog in the kitchen. Kevin did not appreciate our humor, however, and said "We don't have dogs in the kitchen. Come on now, let's not be ridiculous." I wasn't looking to be a problem customer, nor was I looking for any hand outs, but after our interaction with him, I gladly accepted his offer to comp both of our meals. If not for our issues with the manager, we would have gladly come back, to try them again after they got their growing pains worked out, but now I'm not sure that's the case. Overall I'd give the food 2 to 3 stars out of 5 because it's nothing spectacular by any means. Reminds me of a kitschy Dennys. The rest of the staff were great and went above and beyond to help us out. They are the reason Black Bear gets two stars. read more

This review could have easily been a 2, however due to a great management staff that turned my frown upside down, I'm giving the diner a 4! Still not the 5 I was expecting to give the black bear (that I love) as the food was slow to arrive, and when it did, it was cold. Pam, the manager on duty, was quick to remedy the situation and took care of the entire ticket. We were happy to pay for the waffle we had for desert, as it was amazing, but Pam wouldn't here of it. She was very friendly, genuine and funny. It just so happened it was my birthday breakfast, and Pam made a potentially bad situation a great one! Black Bear has always been one of my favorite places to eat, so I'm happy to see the Newberg (where I live) location will keep up with the BBD awesome reputation! Thank you, Pam! I ate here for the first time today and it was awesome, all around! I had the "hobo" omelette with the thickest bacon cuts in there I've ever seen. The fruit was fresh and the service was perfect from the moment I walked in. Although it wasn't being used, because it's not wintertime, there is the biggest fireplace in there that would make this place feel even more like home than it already did if it was burning. There menus are newpapers, which is so clever, and the decor is like you're on a vacation to some log cabin- type chalet. Also, bears everywhere haha! Loved this place and am definitely giving it another go the next time I'm in Newberg!! read more

Have had a couple bad meals here. The last one my son ordered pancakes and inside he found a surprise! A green slimy surprise! At first glance i thought it was snot, but that was a false alarm...upon closer inspection, it was lettuce! Still really gross. The hash room tasted like they were missing something, the breakfast burrito do yourself a favor and don't get it it is horrible in my opinion. Service was good though for the wait staff, it took forever to get our food and to me they were not that busy 6/8/2017 we will never be back they are so slow to get the food to the table, finely i went up and asked if they could check on our food, 2 mins later it comes out and it is cold, pathetic we will. I took my son to breakfast at Newberg Black Bear Diner. I have always had a good experience. When I got my meal, it was missing one of the meat portions. It also had bacon that were 1/2 the size as usual. When I complained to the manager saying these are not the usual bacon portions, I got nothing but excuses and was told I was wrong. Gone are the days where the customer is right. I was right...the previous bacon I had was full size and thick. I am now right again in saying this manager has no people/customer skills. read more

After the morning eclipse, my family and I headed to the Black Bear Diner for a late breakfast. Upon entering the establishment, the decor gives one a homey Disneylike impression. We were the second guests to the establishment and were quickly seated. Our waitperson collected our drink orders and delivered them. Orders were taken and we watched as the establishment filled with moon revelers and their families. Large tables filled up with people. We waited approximately 25 minutes for our order to begin appearing. Our food appeared in three rounds. My food was a scramble and hashbrowns and the world's largest biscuit. I eagerly dove into the biscuit after putting some prepackaged grape jelly and butter on it. It was not warm and the overall mouth taste and feel was wholly unremarkable. Deeply bland. I wanted Grandma's biscuit and got boxed blandness. Hoping this was only a misstep, the scramble came next. The cheese in it was not melted through and the dish itself was warm, but definitely not hot. Again, the taste was remarkably bland and uninteresting. Finally, I ate only the crispy top of the hashbrown and again, wholly bland and boring. Seemingly, the cooks at the establishment do not understand how to use seasoning. However, the moistness of the scramble and the hashbrowns leads me to believe that vegetable oil is used in abundance. My wife had the California Benedict. While she ate most of it, the eggs were not poached. In fact, one egg was a yellow ball of overhard yolk and the other a nearly the same. Strange that the cook staff cannot complete the task of making a breakfast staple correctly. Finally, my sister in law ordered a cheeseburger. Her order arrived last and without melted cheese on the burger. She sent it back and it returned with the bottom of the burger badly burned. She sent it back a second time and her burger finally arrived. By this time she was so wound up as to lose her appetite. We alerted the manager to the nature of the food along with the burnt scrambled eggs served to my sister in law's son. She offered to have the cooks RECOOK our meals but in no way took responsibility or apologized for the lack of quality. The waitperson also came to talk with my sister in law, but again, did not take any responsibility. Both retorted with an offer to remake the meal, but neither assumed responsibility. It was "I'm sorry you feel as though you've been wronged." We called for the bill, put our cards out, and waited. After waiting quite a while, we waved down a server and wondered why our bill was not being taken care of. We were directed to take it to the front. While this is common practice, note that it was because we had not been checked on in quite a while that we ended up waiting for such a long time. The wait staff clearly does not know that checking on the well being of customers is a just a basic part of food service. After leaving, the food did not sit well. I will never return to the Black Bear Diner and highly encourage others to find another establishment to attend for any meal. Bad, boring and poorly cooked food, inattentive wait staff, and unclean bathrooms ensure that we will not return. read more
