Do not waste your time or $$ eating at this restaurant. Food is always like warm. Very hot & miss and has been that way for a long time not just since pandemic. Servers are all very nice, but the cooks need serious training! They also give you plenty of food, but if its yesterdays luke warm dried up hashbrowns, or cold eggs, who cares?? Do yourself a favor and drive just a little further into Wilsonville where their Black Bear is consistently excellent. You won't be sorry and it's a nice little drive. Today I visited and dined with two friends at lunch time. Our waitress, Suset was always on top of things. She was friendly, timely and full of great suggestions always offering a listening ear or accommodating our requests. The service was amazing and food was tasty/well-portioned. Solid diner/ restaurant. We wanted a quick, inexpensive lunch, and got a good one here. I had a vegetarian omelette with jack cheese and hash browns, delicious. Spouse had a tuna melt, also tasty. Decent breakfast place outside of Newburg - and hash browns, so I was happy. There are vegetarian options, and they added jalapenos which tells me they're good with special orders. The staff was friendly, and our food arrived quite quickly - which was ideal because we were in a hurry. We did run out of water halfway through the meal, and had to go hunting to refill our own water - I suspect because our server got busy and didn't have time to check back. Service and food was wonderful! Mary Ann was our server tonight and she was amazing. She made sure to check in frequently during our wait for the food, it was a busy night and she never failed to be one step ahead of our needs! This was our "go-to" breakfast joint in Newberg, it's a great franchise. However our last visit was terrible primarily because of lack of trained staff. After waiting in the lobby for 20 minutes prior to being seated in the less than 50% full dining room, we were quickly greeted at the table by the waiter with coffee, immediately taking our order. At that point, there was only one other occupied table in our section. During our wait for food, six more tables were seated. We waited over 60 minutes before we left after drinking 3-4 cups of coffee. As we were walking out, the waiter said " they're just flipping your eggs". The worst part was a table seated at least 30 minutes after us was almost finished with their breakfast when we stood up to leave. At that point only the first table seated (shorty before us) were finished and gone from the restaurant and no other tables had any delivered food. Our order was not complicated and was one of the standard plates most people order. We won't be back anytime soon. read more

Well, after weeks of,waiting, I finally got a response to my review, it only says Business Manager no name. So, whoever wrote the response absolutely did a "very poor job". It certainly didn't or will NOT change my mind about this Black Bear in Newberg. And after reading a few other reviews, one as 9 hours ago, it doesn't surprise me the response I got. Several of the reviews mention "RUDE" behavior from the Staff and they are RIGHT ON POINT, not to mention the Management Team. So, Black Bear in Newberg, the word spreads quickly and keeps spreading, you either make some drastic "changes" or you will find yourself closing your doors permanently. There,are,about 250 of us, who have taken our business to the Black Bear in Beaverton, worth the 20 min drive from Newberg, what an AWESOME Staff, from the Management to the Wait Staff. Host didn't seem like he wanted to help us. Got seated and our waitress was great but after being served and almost done eating we were told she went home sick. BLT had more lettuce in it than anything. Hardly any bacon. Open faced turkey sandwich with gravy had no favor. Very bland. Even the mashed potatoes were bland. Fish n chips, well the fish was tough. The burger and French fries were good. Also, waitresses need to learn not to put their hands on the tops of the glasses when they serve them. Our fill in waitress was also polite. Plus they don't clean their tables well cause I went to get up from my table when I noticed my brand new first time wearing it shirt had blackberry jam on it. So far I have been here 3 times since they opened. And tried to come in a couple other times but the wait times were too long for us. The remodel looks great- it looks and smells brand new. The staff has been awesome. I'm especially happy Angela works here who was a favorite server of mine from another restaurant in town. There are people checking in throughout our meal. The breakfast food is awesome. I'm partial to their thick cut perfectly cooked bacon. The portions are huge. They have a great kids meal, crayons and a diaper changing station in the bathroom- all a win for me since I am usually accompanied by my 2 year old when I eat out. Sadly, I had a below average burger- but it was opening day so I'll give diner food another chance. Overall I'm a fan of this franchise and happy we have a location in my town. read more

I really wish I would have gone to Js Diner.... As most the people around us were also mumbling. We made the mistake of coming on Sunday morning. I really regret this decision. We were told that there was going to be a 25 minute wait... It turned to be more of a 35 minute wait. After we were seated the next long wait occurred. I did a take out for a lunch for my husband wasn't too impressed the food was mediocre the rueben sandwich was very small the fries were not fresh they were cold they sat around for a while the chicken tenders were very normal you're basic out of the box chicken tenders. Ever since Black Bear Diner opened, this was "our" spot to go weekly, religiously and reliably. Sometimes, twice a week. The owners were wonderful not only to their employees (and it showed) but also to the customers (also showed). We boasted to everyone, this was the place to go. The ambiance was great, service 2nd to none, food was always good. Literally, there was nothing we could say negatively about this restaurant, until now. It has recently been purchased by new owners who then fired the absolute BEST server. Are we partial, you bet! We were always treated with happiness, sunshine and respect. All the workers worked hard to make their customers comfortable and happy to come in, but Suset worked circles tirelessly. She wasn't afraid to say hello, offer a hug to those that she enjoyed and always asking if there was anything else she could do to make your stay more enjoyable. Fired, for an absolutely asinine reason and without trying to find a solution, through no fault of Suset at all. We will miss Suset, but we won't be missing Black Bear Diner, not anymore. The new owners should understand small towns have big feelings about those they let in. We've seen many restaurants start and fail here in Newberg... and we honestly believe one of the biggest successes Black Bear had was due to Suset and the atmosphere she set, everytime she stepped into work. The food is corporate... neither really terrible nor really good. So, what you're really paying for is the customer service. They aren't good at this. I ordered a fried chicken dinner over the phone; I was told 10-15 minute wait. When I got there, I paid my tab (with a tip) and proceeded to wait 40 minutes for my food. Then, they blamed it on me because I was sitting in the corner. We are in middle of a world-wide pandemic and I was sitting six feet from everybody else as I always do. When I got the food home, it was stone cold. Called the manager to complain and her response was "what did you expect... you got your food to go". Sheesh. Sorry to inconvenience you!! LOL read more
