Homemade Meatloaf. $11.89. Ground beef and seasoned sausage. Roasted then topped with beef gravy and a deep-fried onion ring.

We had an OK lunch at Black Bear Diner in Newberg, Oregon. Black Bear Diner is a national restaurant chain with, at the time of writing this review, over 150 locations in over a dozen states. Most locations are on the West Coast, but there are a few as far east as Missouri and Arkansas. The type of cuisine served is classic American. This restaurant worked out for our group of eight because: (1) we were in the area doing a wine tour (Willamette Valley / Oregon Wine Country) and this restaurant's location was convenient to the wineries/vineyards we went to and (2) the restaurant was able to accommodate our somewhat large group, as walk-in customers, in fairly short order (we didn't have a reservation and I don't know if this place even takes them). This was on a Saturday around 1:45pm. While the restaurant is spacious and had plenty of open tables, we had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table to be prepared for us. Maybe they were short-staffed. Black Bear Diner is old-fashioned Americana. From the outside in, the atmosphere is like dining in a wooden lodge, complete with brick fireplace, antler chandeliers, and art and decor featuring black bears and images evocative of the American West. I like it. In the front, they had a small display case of various pies, cobblers, cakes, brownies, and other desserts. The menus looked like black-and-white newspapers and were titled, "The Black Bear Gazette." They even have a jukebox. Neat. The menu had an extensive selection and I thought the prices were reasonable, at least, for what I got. I had the Homemade Meatloaf ($11.89) from the "Little Less" Dinner section of the menu. Little Less dinners include seasonal vegetables and red-skinned mashed potatoes with country gravy. In other words, less calories and healthier. My meatloaf was made with a "special recipe of ground beef and seasoned sausage," roasted and topped with beef gravy and a deep-fried onion ring. I can't remember if I substituted my seasonal vegetables out with one of Black Bear Diner's regular "homestyle" sides, Italian green beans with bacon. Regardless, that's what I had as my vegetable (green beans and bacon). Overall, the meal wasn't anything to write home about, but it was filling and satisfying nonetheless. I like this kind of food, and meatloaf in particular, and it wasn't bad. It served its purpose. On the menu, I noticed they offered all-you-can-eat fried fish for $15.99 (includes fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, and tartar sauce) on Fridays after 4pm. They also have prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays after 4pm. In general, I think Black Bear Diner is ideal for families with kids, groups, and for a casual breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's easy. Service was good. Our server was polite and efficient. The hostess was fine. Not the warmest welcome. The section where our table was located, at the southeast corner of the dining room, was frigid. The AC was cranked up way too high. One of us had to go to the car and get some jackets.

Santa Maria Tri-Tip* (240 cals.) the calories don't include the sides.

We are glad it was the Newbergundian Bistro. We had to start with a Croissant. It was very flavorful, but it was bit soft, not the perfect crunch that we love. The accompanying fondue was so good to dip the Croquettes into. We finished with a Ham and Brie Sandwich that was excellent, accompanied by crisp and hot french fries. We started at the bar, which was not comfortable for my mom but eventually we were able to sit on the patio which was great. Potato croquet appetizer - yummy. The cheese, pickle, mustard and croquettes go together as one perfect bite. I got the open face Ruben. It was delicious. I tried the grilled cheese which my sister got too - yummy, but there's a sticky cheese on there that I didn't love. Greens that came with all items were weird. Didn't eat them - don't know what they were.

Weekdays is Brunch until 2pm and has some nice options both on the breakfast and lunch side of things. Honestly, you'll never go wrong with a burger and [amazing] fries here but pretty much everything is good and there is of course a GREAT wine list and whatever cocktail you might want. Dinner has both a prix fixe and a la carte option, on a recent dinner visit my party of 6 did a la carte and the food was generally good. Wagyu tartare was under-seasoned but my other friend is still talking about how perfect the grilled pork loin main course was. Shrimp aguachile was a hit while the hazelnut crusted lamb was good if not great. Service was fantastic, I understand there may have been some turnover recently but on a couple recent experiences I have found servers to be very good. I understand the restaurant may have an "interim" Executive Chef for the moment but quality was still good on recent visits and the ambience & service were still great. The Allison will rarely disappoint, and Jory is still an amazing option for dining in the Willamette Valley. Well done as always.

Also worth pointing out the kitchen has an open view to see whats going on, nothing to hide. Very impressed. The only minus was the food took a little longer to arrive than I expected. But they did cook it to perfection and the wait staff kept us informed on the progress from the kitchen Definitely a place I am visiting again. Also worth mentioning, the resort is beautiful with interesting sculptures and amazing artwork on display

Thankfully I pulled over in the lot to eat, so I didn't get far before I noticed my meal had come with fries instead of the salads. The salads were half the reason I wanted to eat there. I walked up to the window to ask why I had gotten fries, and the woman told me they were out of the salads. That's definitely something she should've mentioned when I ordered, but she didn't. I pointed that out to her and explained I wouldn't have wanted it if I had known. She offered to let me return my meal, but I suggested she refund half and let me keep it, which she agreed to. The piroshki was a good size and well seasoned with plenty of filling. The fries looked seasoned but didn't taste like it. They needed salt and/or some kind of sauce. I didn't order any sauces because I didn't know I was getting fries, but they should've come with something complimentary IMO. They were extremely slow for a Friday afternoon on a very busy road. The prices on their website are considerably less than at the shop ($18 vs $15.50 for my meal), and there wasn't a current menu pic on Yelp (which I've since added). I would've skipped it altogether if I had known what they were charging. I imagine that's part of the reason they're so slow. Minus two stars for not explaining they were out of half my meal before preparing it, plus one for offering a fair solution, minus one for sub-par fries and nothing to eat them with. Minus one for inconsistent pricing.

I ordered the day's specialty, Sam's Tacos--three freshly handmade tortillas filled with shrimp, bacon, and steak, served with a delicious spicy peanut sauce. However, the quality more than makes up for the extra time. You can really taste the freshness and care that goes into each dish. My friend ordered the huevos rancheros and thoroughly enjoyed her meal as well. The portions are generous, and we both left feeling full and satisfied. Kopitos is tucked away in downtown Newberg, making it a fun little hidden gem. I noticed they advertise live music, so it's probably a great spot to visit in the late afternoon or evening. They also have plenty of outdoor seating, which would be perfect on a warm, sunny day. There is limited parking in front of the restaurant, but street parking is available nearby. I highly recommend Kopitos if you're in or around the Newberg area. Fresh, flavorful food, generous portions, and a welcoming atmosphere make it well worth a visit!
