We were in town last year for an antique show that we stay over for four days. This Diner was right on our way from hotel to show. We stopped on day one and we were so impressed with food, service, and cleanliness that we continued to eat many meals over that four days at the Black Bear Diner on 12th St in Ogden. We were so impressed that we absolutely looked forward to it again and here we are on our way home again after all the good meals and great service with no complaints whatsoever. We came for breakfast on a quiet weekday mid-morning, so after the breakfast rush was over. Our waitress did a really great. My beef came when we went to check out. My mom went first in line, and I was right behind her. However, while I was standing right there--card and receipt in hand--the cashier doesn't say a word but walks away. Turns out that he felt it was more important to get the door dash's order instead. Yep, walked back to the kitchen and put their order together. Is it more important to get a door dash order ready than help a customer who bothered to actually come into the restaurant, pay for a meal while there, tip the waitress, etc? I sure found out the priority that this restaurant has. Just letting the public know you WILL BE TREATED LIKE A SECOND CLASS CITIZEN because you actually came into the restaurant rather than ordered door dash. read more

Black Bear Diner is a great home-cooking style restaurant and we love coming in. They have fantastic breakfast offerings and the portions they bring out to you are giant! You will NOT go hungry here and may even need to share a dish or take some home to enjoy later. Fun interior with dark wood and accents. It's like eating in a cabin in the woods. Good times. Their lunch and dinner meals are excellent as well. I particularly enjoyed the Tri-tip steak sandwich this last time around. Their chowder isn't great, unfortunately, but otherwise everything else was great. They have their own steak sauce (tastes similar to A1) and a selection of 3 different bottled hot sauces at each table (mild to habanero hot), which we loved. My adult son had the cheese burger basket. Basic cheeseburger with a MOUNTAIN of fries. I had the turkey/bacon club with onion rings. I asked for sour dough bread, but got white bread. i asked for avocado and got none. I think there may have been 1 piece of bacon on my whole sandwich. I got 5 greasy onion rings. Disappearing workers. Waiter disappearing when my food was ready to be served, it sat under heat lamps until the manager came out from the back office. I sat and watched my food and waited for it to be delivered. Then again Disappearing Cashier. I sat waiting to pay as well as were people waiting to get seated. Told Manager who by the way was missing most of the time also. He cashed me out. I received a very small discount and when he saw I tipped a small amount his glare was quite amusing. Food: I had the Bacon/Eggs/Pancakes with extra side of bacon I always get. Honestly you can't go wrong here, the food is consistently good. The Bacon is the best in the Diner Segment in Utah. And their Pancakes and waffles are really great! Service: The server was very nice, and QUICK! Wow the food came out fast that night. Ambiance: Black Bear is usually pretty clean, it's folksy... Sometimes you go in after a rush period and they are trying to get the place cleaned up, but we're used to that in family style restaurants. The food was delicious, the service was great and quick. We were in a hurry and had to be in and out in 20 minutes, which wasn't a problem at 7am on a Saturday. I docked them a star only because they used to have a gluten free bun (no bread available, just bun), but they no longer carry it. We ate here once a few years ago and the food was ok but the service was bad. Tonight my husband wanted to try it again so we did. Things started out fine and after we got our food, mine was so bland, we saw our waitress once. We saw other waitresses and they would just walk by. We finally got up, without a check and went to the cashier. We told her what happened and she said she was sorry but she noticed the girl was upset. Have eaten here twice with a co-worker who is gluten-intolerant, and both times have had Rhonda as our server. First meal consisted of the steak & eggs breakfast, the special that day, with sliced tomatoes subbed for biscuit and eggs scrambled for both of us, fruit for him, hash browns for me. Our steaks were done just as we requested, and tomatoes were good considering it was well past tomato season. Only improvement would have been my "crispy" hash browns were only crispy on the outside; inside was limp. Sat at the "bar" at this visit. Second meal was a late lunch, this time at a table. It took a little longer to get service and our food. Seemed to be short handed and a lot of the tables needed bussing. Rhonda remembered us, which was nice. He had the ham & egg breakfast, again w/tomatoes and fruit (Rhonda remembered to offer tomatoes,) but eggs over easy. I opted for the Cashew Chicken Caesar Salad, sub bleu cheese dressing. Salad was huge with a lot of chicken, however, about 1/4 way into it I realized there were no wonton strips. I asked Rhonda and she asked the kitchen & was told they were out of them. She also said she didn't even have croutons to offer. The wonton strips were one of my decision factors because I like the texture. Grabbed a gluten-free brownie to go, which was AMAZING! 4-stars because of Rhonda's service, steaks cooked right, portion sizes to price and amazing gluten-free brownies. The food is not the same as we have experienced in the past. The food arrived nearly cold and not piping hot like before. Poached eggs were also undercooked. Honestly had a great time here. We came here really late after some mini golf and they were closing in roughly 20 minutes. They treated us like they had all night to help us (u less behind the scenes they cussed us) haha. Seriously though our waitress chatted and took her time and made sure our order was perfect and hot. She was really good. The true downside however was my food. Not everyone in my parties food, my food. I ordered salmon and so did someone else in my party and it was soooo dry. Like so so dry. You could tell it was microwaved and that it was just completely under seasoned and over cooked. I guess that's what you get ordering fish at a traditionally not fish place. We went in on Christmas morning about 8:50 am. We could see many empty tables but knew it would be busy. Our waitress was HORRIBLE. Blonde hair with a maroon top. Hostess sat our party of 3. Waitress took about 10 minutes to come to our table. Took our drink order and then disappeared. About 15 minutes later we asked another waitress to find out what happened to our waitress. We had been watching her the entire time talking to someone at the counter. She showed up about 5 minutes later with our drinks. She said that she was helping others, she wasnt, as we had been watching her the entire time talking with someone sitting at the counter. We ordered our food. It came out in about half time time of our drinks and then that was it. She didnt ask us for refills or if we needed or wanted anything else. She came back about 10 minutes later and brought our bill and said she wasnt trying to push us out but wanted to give us our bill. That was it. She waited on another table next to us, she was chatting and looking at pictures on their phone. Another table next to us who she also waited on, came in after us and received their food before we even received our drinks. It was very obvious she did not want to wait on our table. Little did she know, we had a $100 bill to offer as a tip for working on Christmas. The cashier asked about our experience and we let her know what horrible service it had been. We understand that is was Christmas and we knew that there would be a wait, but she made it very obvious that she did not want to wait on our table. read more

My wife and I have enjoyed eating here many times. Good service and good food. Definitely one of the better dinning options on 12th Street. They do get extremely busy Saturday mornings, so plan on a wait. My only complaint would be the prices, but they give you good portions. Expect about $20 per adult after taxes and tip. read more
