We are fans of Black Bear Diner, generally. We were pleased to find one so nearby our hotel this morning. We arrived just after 8 am and the place was pretty quiet. We were seated immediately and perused the menus for a bit before our server arrived for a drink order. We ordered two meals from the kids menu--chocolate chip pancakes and a "mini-volcano"--along with one of the Little Less meals and a breakfast burrito. The food was great--especially their gorgeous pancakes and biscuits! But the actual plating seemed odd. My husband's burrito arrived looking tiny and boring on a huge plate; the stack of chocolate chip pancakes came on a tiny plate that just barely fit their diameter. Maybe this is a new location still working out the kinks? Not sure. But it was just a bit of oddity to mix up our still delicious meal. I had a very good experience and some tasty food at the Black Bear Diner. I ordered up the Biscuits and Gravy with bacon and scrambled eggs, with a cup of coffee. The plate came out looking great. The biscuits were huge, and the bacon and eggs were cooked to perfection. Everything tasted great, however, there was way too much biscuit, definitely too much as compared to the gravy. Besides that one quibble, I had no complaints and I solved the problem by just not eating the extraneous biscuits, wasteful but functional. This location is pretty new, the restaurant looked great, the decor was woodsy and homey. I received exceptional service, my coffee was always full, my order was taken quickly and the food was delivered soon there after. The food looked and tasted great. As an extra bonus, each table had an exceptional condiment assortment. Our entire party have all been to a Black Bear Diner at different locations in the past and thought we knew what to expect walking into this location. Boy, was that a mistake. First, they were out of fries, which was admittedly surprising but we rolled with it. As food was arriving from our revised orders, it was then the kitchen informed us that certain entree items have run out... which required more revised orders. On top of that, the 3 brisket orders were so dried out, thin, and tough that they may as well have been smoked beef jerky. The server was accommodating to the best of her ability and that was the one saving grace from this dining experience. I do not recommend this place for food. read more

Great service. Good food. We were PACKED like sardines in the lobby, but I took a stroll to the bathroom and saw a dozen open tables. They sat us sooner than the 30 mintue expected wait. Thank goodness because it was late and we were huuuungry after fishing. My husband and I both ordered the Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak. Mine with country gravy and his with brown. I liked it with both gravy, but I liked the brown gravy a little more. The vegetable medley it came with was cold. Like right out of the fridge and then they poured melted butter them in hopes it gets warmed up. Nope. The carrots in it tasted weird too, so neither of us ate our veggies. Be prepared before you come. Wear your fat pants and say a prayer because the portions at Black Bear Diner are massive. The appetizer salad is even massive and comes with a lage cornbread biscuit. It's an entire meal itself. It's too much food, really, but I guess that's why everyone loves it. Lots of food for little money. It actually gives me a little anxiety come here, ok not really. But it reminds me of my old days of overeating and poor eating habits. I used to eat until I was sick and this is one of those places thst enables you to do so. On the other hand it makes me feel good to know I will not eat all of it anymore. Then I flip flop back, feeling bad about wasting all that's left. Anywho, this has no negative impact on my rating, it's just me talking to much about personal problems and giving you a heads up for the amount of food you'll receive. Try it out. Update: went back 1/24/19--was not any better: I wrote a review of this BBD in April 2017 shortly after they opened their Ogden location. I was underwhelmed by the experience so stayed away. I went back for the first time this week. Sadly, my overall review remains the same as it did almost 2 years ago. I arrived at 10:30 on a Monday morning and was seated right away. The restaurant was about 2/3 full. I was seated at a small booth directly across from the kitchen. My server was training another server. The food was better--but it took 30 minutes to get my meal. At no point in that 30 minutes did anyone offer to freshen my coffee, see if I needed anything, get me a complimentary muffin or toast--nothing. The food was not worth waiting 30 minutes for. Sitting across from the kitchen I could see at least 5 cooks. And the bulk of the wait staff (at least 6 people at one point) was standing in front of the pass begging the cooks for food for their tables. With that many cooks it doesn't seem like not having enough people to cook is the issue, but rather people needing to work smarter, not harder. The server apologized for the long wait but I felt like after that long--in a restaurant that was not full--I should have been offered a discount of some kind. None was forthcoming. I'm disappointed that after almost 2 years it seems like they still cannot figure out how to get good food to people in a timely manner. The Black Bear Diner is a really cute place the offers a different environment from your usual food chain restaurant. You feel like you're going home to a mountain cabin. It is clean and the service was good. Unfortunately, the food was just okay. There are vegetarian options now which is a definite bonus. The desserts are all enticing and the ones we tried were very good but they were overpriced. Went here for breakfast the other morning. It was very busy but we was seated quickly. Our order was taken and food was on the table in a timely manner. I was shocked at how big the portions of food are. It was very yummy. Next time I go I will order an extra bowl of gravy for my biscuits. Not quite enough gravy for all the bread. Great food... I personally haven't had any of the issues that other people have had here. Good portion sizes (especially breakfast) and the staff is always very friendly. There have been instances where the floor was pretty dirty (covered in food crumbs and whatnot) but the staff always eventually cleaned it up. And sometimes you'll have to ask your waitress multiple times if you want any extra items (dipping sauces, extra dressing, etc.) but that's a small nitpick. Overall, they're not a bad restaurant at all. I don't eat here very often, but in my honest opinion, their food is worth it. read more

The hubby & I ordered food from Black Bear Diner. What we got was a mess. We ordered extra food so we wouldn't have to cook that day (doing spring house stuff), our order was well over $80.00. My orders were both completely wrong. The hubby had problems with his order but they were livable with. When we called them to complain about the problems, they informed us that they'd gotten two orders mixed up and we could come down and fix it. Excuse me...if we'd wanted to go out, why were we ordering delivery? We ended up keeping the order, the hubby ate his and I ate a tv dinner. We're giving them three stars because the hubby's food was good and the pies were incredible, but I don't think we'll be ordering from them again. read more

I read all the reviews of this place before we came, good and bad. After finally eating here, I think the bad reviews are really unfair, and this is why: Me, my mom, and my grandma met up with a friend I hadn't seen since high school. We were promptly seated. Our waitress came immediately and got our drink order. Shortly after, a different waitress, Sarah, showed up and let us know our initial waitress had ended her shift and Sarah would be taking over. I truly appreciated that since in one of my previous reviews our waitress took off with no word. Honesty is important. Sarah proceeded to take AMAZING care of us. Without us even telling her, she somehow knew it was a special occasion, and treated us accordingly. The two of us who got salads received them quickly, and they were amazing. I hate places that serve wan, white, dried-out iceberg lettuce, and this was nothing like that. Really nice, cold, mixed variety lettuce, lots of veggies, and the bacon ranch we ordered was divine. Big chunks of bacon in it and a really great flavor. I'm picky about ranch, and this is one of the best I've ever had. Apparently they mix it in-house, which is even more impressive. I ordered the California Eggs Benedict and the eggs were poached PERFECTLY, which is rare for around here. The hash browns are different than I've ever had, and had the exact right amount of outside crunch/inside softness ratio. Strangely, ketchup on them made them taste almost like candy, they were so good. Grandma stole some off my plate and said she'd call in orders to pick up for those alone. Amazing. Grandma got the French dip with onion rings, and she rarely does leftovers but she brought everything she didn't eat home (and wouldn't let me steal any!) Mom got the open faced turkey sandwich and cleaned her plate. My friend couldn't do bread, so they turned their club sandwich into a wrap for her and brought her fresh tortillas. Way out of the way, and super awesome, she didn't even have to ask, it was just suggested by Sarah. Every single person at our table was thrilled with our food. A note about our waitress, Sarah. She's one of the best servers I've ever come across. She was personable and kind and had a cool personality and sense of humor. She had this weird Supernatural ability to know what we needed without us even asking. I've never seen anything like it. If you read this, Sarah, hit me up, I think we'd be great buds! Anyway, an all-around awesome dining experience. And the main reason I think the bad reviews are unfair is that a lot of them are from when the diner first opened and they were inundated and just trying to get their footing. They deserve a chance to get on their feet before getting attacked, I'm just saying. I hope the people who gave bad reviews go back and try again, because this place is really on it's game and it's a great place to eat! Update: I'm disappointed today. We got chicken fried steak through DoorDash. I've also had it in the restaurant. It's just not good. I love this restaurant, but the chicken fried steak needs to be re-worked. The menus are pretty cool-- basically formatted to look like a newspaper. Their menu selection is huge and even the pickiest of eaters should have no problem finding something to eat. I went with the Denver omelet, and an orange juice. The food did take a hot minute, but the waitress apologized profusely and refilled our juices for free. The food itself was good; nothing to write home about, but portion sizes are relatively big and I didn't have any complaints. Ate here r tonight. My other half got the big bears burger a huge burger BTW. Bigger than a whopper.. I got the 10 Oz steak/eggs with biscuits and fruit. Holy biscuit!! At first my steak looked too rare but the cute waitress Sedie (apologies if misspelled) noticed it wasn't medium rare so she offered to take it back to get it corrected. Thai place is the go to for the best breakfast anywhere. Huge portions, amazing variety, and all cooked to perfection. The "Grizz" breakfast should be outlawed for one person. This morning my husband and I went for breakfast. I started with something simple, a nice hot cup of tea and our waitress was nice enough to bring the cream that I asked for. My breakfast was just two poached eggs with runny yolks, toast with honey and a bowl of fruit. I have to make a note here that some shifts over cook poached eggs and that did not happen this morning. The chef did a wonderful job and my eggs were perfect! The eggs tasted fresh and wonderful full of flavor. I am happy to say the toast was not over buttered, usually restaurants soak the toast and butter but not here and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Something as simple as toast normally doesn't warrant notice but I am such a picky person that my toast today was indeed perfect. The fruit bowl did have plenty of fruit and the grapes in it were fresh, not a single grape had bruises on them. Again you wouldn't think something as simple as grapes would matter but it did to me and I thank the people that put together that bowl of fruit, that they paid attention. My husband seem to enjoy his breakfast too and that made the whole experience really nice. Today did make up for my bad experience the last time. This place is OK for breakfast, you can sit and drink coffee and have a pretty OK breakfast. However, lunch or dinner or a whole different ball game. After a sketchy dinner that we didn't finish we were given a $10 certificate to come back and try again which we did. My husband got the meatloaf, how do you screw that up right, and I got the wild caught salmon. The salmon comes and it is hard as shoe leather. It had taken quite a while to get our meals, so when the waitress asked if she could have the cook re-make it, I told her no, just take the fish back and bring me a plain burger patty that is not over cooked. It only takes about four minutes to cook a burger however this took far longer and when it came, you guessed it, it was over cooked and hard as leather. They said sorry and charged us for the salmon even though I didn't eat it and it was quite pricey - much more than a burger patty. SO If you just want to have breakfast then it's an OK place to go - as for the other meals I probably wouldn't do it. The salad that came with the meal also had a chemical taste to it.
