Rainy Sunday afternoon, we stopped after coming off a hiking trail. We sat at the high tops in the bar. The bartender came right over and greeted us. He gave specials and some recommendations. We both had the beet salad which was delicious, well made had nicely done candied walnuts. We started with martini's which were perfect. I had the bouliabaise special and my wife had the mussels app. My entree was great, the seafood was cooked perfectly. Served with asavory saffron broth, tomatoes, shaved fennel and generous amount of seafood. Very nicely done. The mussels were slightly over done but not completely the flavor was good. We finished with maple creme brûlée, coffee and sambucca snifters. The brûlée was creamy and tasted good. My wife thought the brûlée topping was a bit thick. Call ahead seating , day before Valentine's Day it was packed but we were sat immediately , waitress was very understanding and gave us time to look over the menu . I ordered the 3-bean vegetarian chili and was very pleased with the crisp cheese on top . I also ordered the quesadilla and was unfortunately displeased as it was bland. My boyfriend ordered the sirloin steak tips so I was able to have some , very great flavor with a good sized portion of mashed potatoes and vegetables . This restaurant is great! My boyfriend and I were passing through on the way back from some mountain sightseeing and decided to get dinner here. There is a very nice outdoor seating area and attentive staff. Katie, our waitress was very prompt in taking our orders and the chef was very accommodating in keeping my plate gluten free! The boyfriend and I ate here for lunch on a Monday. It was not very busy at all, but why would it be? We sat at the bar, as we often do, and the bartender was very attentive. I had a glass of the house chardonnay, which was fine. I'm not sure how I feel about the glass itself--it wasn't a traditional wine glass. I suspect I'm very picky, but part of having a glass of wine is the glass itself. We both ordered turkey burgers--his with cheese, and mine with basil aioli, lettuce, and tomato. The burgers tasted fine--nothing wrong with them. But it was something I could have easily made at home, or made better at home. I hate paying $12 for a frozen burger puck, which is exactly what this was. Is it really that hard to do a hand-formed patty? Then at least there could be herbs or something mixed in, too. Again, it tasted fine, but it could have been better. The fries were quite good--skinny, crisp fries with the right amount of salt. No complaints. I would eat here again. The service was fine, and the create-a-burger had a lot of great options that one doesn't usually see on a menu. The rest of the menu looked promising, as well, but we were exhausted and all we had the energy for was something simple. Friday night, and there was no wait at 8:30pm. The atmosphere was casual and quiet, and they had a decent list of wines. We had the Chicken Satay app, which was moist and spicy and delicious, and for an entree I had the Grilled Chicken Caprese sandwich, which had just the right amount of tomato and mozarella. My husband had the Hummus wrap (which I had several bites of) and it was also delicious! The portions were huge; the sandwich was generous and came with more french fries than I could eat. We split the peanut butter chocolate cake for dessert, and the cake was moist but the frosting wasn't very peanut-buttery; so the overall effect of dessert was bland. Otherwise, the whole meal was a great value and we're psyched to have a new place to go when we stay up north to ski. read more

AMAZING!! My friend and I had dinner here tonight and the food and service were incredible. Everywhere else in the area had insane wait times but they got us in and seated within 30 minutes of placing our name of waitlist. Our waitress Maddy was so sweet and attentive. She was super friendly and was very personable. We started with the calamari and it was absolutely to die for! I have a big Italian family and that had to be the best calamari I've ever tasted. My friend had the black bean burger and she loved it. The bun was a little flimsy but other than that she didn't complain. I had the grilled Caesar salad with chicken and it was delicious. They were also COVID safe. All staff members wore masks and all tables were 6 feet apart. Staff was fine, the food - wish I could even say bland but it was just incredibly tasteless , of course you know what that means - frozen , thawed out just for you ! Ehhh my gf got the scallops the looked delicious and cooked perfectly....however my steak and fries was just not well...the steak sauce was delicious and the steak was cooked properly but $26 bucks for flank meat is steep and my fries were a nasty brown color which comes from old fryer oil and my asparagus was not fresh. I've been there just for drinks, for appetizers and also for dinner. Their menu changes during the day as their dinner menu is served after 5pm and offers dinner specials and entrees. The last time we went was earlier in the day, so we opted to split some apps (wings and potstickers) and a salad. Everything we've had so far, both casual apps to full fancy entrees, have been fantastic. It feels less touristy than many of the other surrounding restaurants and is pretty unassuming from the outside. The staff are locals and are pretty friendly and like to chat about various outdoor mountain activities. It is my favorite place to eat in this certain section of N. Conway (I usually stay away from the Settler's Green area when I can due to traffic and tourist traps). read more

Fair (not great) whiskey pour. Finished the drink well before I finished the soup. No water offered. No offer of a second drink. Both the soup bowl and empty glass now clearly awaiting to be picked up but bartender was in a lengthy, detailed conversation about another restaurant with a couple at the other end of the rather short bar. I love the Black Cap Grille and I am a quasi regular there for lunch (I am a local). I particularly enjoy their salads, which are fresh and healthy. Alas I had an unfortunate incident yesterday which I decided to share. I felt some chest pain, something I have had before which is alleviated by drinking a glass of water. The waitress had not yet come over so I asked the bartender for a glass of water. He told me to get it from the waitress, although he was clearly not busy. I explained I was having a problem and needed it right then, and he let me know in no uncertain terms that I was a bother. He then poured me two sips of water. Passive aggressive staff like this really sabotage a business and the dining experience. How about saying are you ok, and I'd be happy to get that for you. What if I had been having something serious? I did not share that I was in pain (didn't feel this was his business), and frankly it should not have mattered. If a customer asks for a glass of water, just pour it...you shouldn't need their medical history first. Having said this I believe that Black Cap Grille is a good restaurant and that this experience was very much the exception rather than the norm. Good food, good service. I have also eaten at the bar in the past (different bartender) and was treated with kindness and attentive service. Feb 2014- I have since been here multiple times and had great and friendly service. We stopped in to the Black Cap Grille because of the reviews on Yelp. We were a little perplexed because everywhere we looked online, there was a menu but no pricing. Once we got there, we realized why. The "Build Your Own Burger" was $9.95 to start which included fries, lettuce and tomato only. Add-ons were anywhere from 50 cents to $2.00 each. That being said it was well worth the price. It really was a $13.00 burger. Everything about it was delicious! It was cooked perfectly, the bacon was amazing and the fries (usually an afterthought at most burger joints) were crisp and hot! Me and the girlfriend had great meals here. I did the build your own burger which was great. It seems little pricy up front but once you think about it, it's really not that bad. There are so many different options and all the ingredients were fresh and the burger was well put together. She had the apple and goat cheese salad with the black bean cakes, which were amazing. Food was very tasty and the presentation of the dishes were great. Service left a little to be desired, we ordered beers (which never came). Waiter never asked about drinks again or gave any attention to the fact that we only had waters. Luckily to avoid any awkwardness for him they weren't on the final bill.
