I work nearby and frequently am stuck in the office late. I'm often craving a burger or great risotto. Unfortunately the only way to eat here is to dine in. They rarely accept takeout orders. Tonight the young hostess answered the phone and said they were "too busy to accept takeout orders". To my dismay, I drove by (as I was just next door at the pharmacy). The restaurant was not busy at all. If they keep this up, they will go the way of Maestro's. It's obvious the young hostess doesn't care about anything. Do any owners/managers read this stuff? Take care of your customers or die out like the rest of the restaurants that didn't care! The hostess sucks!!! read more

For our last meal in town before heading out, Trix and I decided to skip breakfast and chose the Black Cap simply because it was the last restaurant before heading into the vast abyss of Central New Hampshire. We walked in about 10 minutes after they opened and not surprisingly there was only 1 other customer. The restaurant is visually beautiful and has the feel of a modernized lodge with stone, exposed beams and an excellent fireplace that's the first thing you notice when you walk in the door. We sat in the bar area and grabbed a menu. As we reviewed the menu, I immediately noticed the extensive burger selection that included the single best burger topping of all time: A Fried Egg. 5 seconds later I decided on my lunch: - 8 oz. beef burger, medium - Topped with american cheese, bacon, lettuce and a fried egg - Side of sweet potato fries - Dill pickle Trixie ordered a BBQ Pulled Pork burrito, but that's a totally moot point! The wait was excruciating...but after about 10 minutes it arrived. I stared longingly at the beautiful tower of goodness on the plate as I drooled. I knew I was in for a great lunch, but I didnt think it would be the single greatest food moment of my life. Each bite was better than the next. The meat was so perfectly seasoned and cooked...The whole wheat bun was toasted ever so slightly and was amazingly fresh...The bacon placed just right, the romaine crisp and the fried egg without equal. I could've easily ordered 3 more... When I was done, I shed a tear because I knew that I would have to wait many moons before I could again savor the greatness that was this burger. The entire meal at the Black Cap was great. Our server, also the bartender who's name escapes me (which Im ashamed to say) shared in my love of the fried egg burger and suggested I go with Pepper Jack instead of American which sounds inticing. I was here about a year ago and I am still traumatized that they just could not cook a hamburger medium. We went here yesterday for lunch. The service was great - our waitress was nice and funny and the owner even came out and went from table to table asking about our meal and how it was and where we were from and what we were doing in Conway. Really nice! Food was good too. I got the vegetarian chili appetizer + asked for a small salad. They were able to do it and only charged me $2.55 for the side salad. It was pretty tiny but to be expected since I said a small salad. The lettuce was a little wilty though. Got the homemade artichoke vinaigrette dressing on the side which was good. They have other vegan/vegetarian options that I want to try next time we are in town: black garlic hummus wrap, and a homemade veggie burger. Love all the options. Lots of toppings for the burger as well. My bf got the pastrami sandwich and said it was good. His son got the kids burger and fries. He liked it too. Only suggestion would be to have other options other than fries as the side for both the sandwich and kid's burger (side salad, side vegetable, etc.). Kids eat so many fries these days! I'm not going to bitch about the price, if I wanted cheap I'd go the some run of the mill chain restaurant and regret it later I will talk about my evening at The Black Cap Grille. The staff was kind, the waiter was helpful when my wife was looking for a salad suggestion. I started with a bowl of clam chowder, a little extra pinch of salt really made it pop. My wife had the strawberry and goat cheese salad which she enjoyed very much. Ok now it's time talk about the burger. I did the build your own burger option. I selected: Angus Burger mid rare. For the prices (steep) the food at Black Cap was mediocre. Our experience was mostly pleasant, we were starved and needed to eat lunch. The beer selection was nice - local brews and some other domestics. Our order got a bit screwed up - and rather than taking the food back our waitress had us "rearrange" our fries at the table - which was very strange. Overall - I probably would not return because it was nothing special. Then again, it may be one of the better places to eat in the area, but I was only in town for a night. read more

This place is very good. We drove by it many times over the years and never tried it. We decided to try this place after a horrible experience at a different place a night before. I ordered the French Onion soup and the Burger #5 with onion rings. They were very good. My wife ordered a chopped salad and a humus wrap with sweet potato fries and they were very good as well. My husband and I enjoy this restaurant. The service and the food is always excellent. Tonight we each had a Cosmo. My husband had a traditional one and I had the pomegranate one. Both were excellent. We started with the lobster arancini which was excellent. Then we had the potato, cheddar, bacon soup. It was very creamy and tasted very good. I had the short rib bolognese. A light sauce covered with short rib meat, very tasty. My husband had the sirloin steak with the potato croquets. The steak was perfectly done and served with a blueberry sauce. For desert my husband had key lime pie which he said was very good and I had the brownie Sundae that was also very good. I highly recommend this restaurant read more

We stopped by (me, my wife and two kids) for lunch last week. When we walked in we like the set up. The space seemed cool and our server Brittany was excellent. So was the beer. The food, however, was sub-par. There was something about it that just didn't sit well in the ol' belly. It just seemed kind of greasy maybe? I had a garlic hummus wrap that felt like lead in my stomach. Wendy had a salad with bean cakes it the cakes likewise were very heavy. You know what it made me think of? You know that Spongebob episode where Mr. Krab's sells the Krusty Krab? And the new owners install a machine that transforms grey glop into Krabby Patties? Stopped by on our way up White Mountain Highway. The location was a little unexpected - in a strip next to an Eastern Mountain Sports, albeit a very nice strip - and the decor was also a little unexpected - fairly sleek, modern, dark colors. As for the food, everything was very good. The cream of mushroom soup had a variety of mushrooms and excellent flavor. Both of us ordered "build your own" burgers and I have to say that being able to put goat cheese and aioli on mine made for a truly excellent burger. It was honestly one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. Just really delicious. The fries were tasty, and my husband liked his onion rings (he's a bit of a fanatic about them.) The only detractor for me was the cost. Between the two of us - soup to start, burgers, and one beer - the bill was nearly $60 for lunch. The extras on the burgers added up pretty quickly. Still, I can't be sad we stopped on our anniversary road trip. The food was delicious, the service was great, and I have few issues when it comes to paying a premium for good food. Black Cap Grille is a nice comfortable place to grab a drink and something to eat. I went there with my wife and 2 y/o and we enjoyed all of the food we ordered. I can't remember what my wife ordered, but I remember that my salad and sandwich were both delicious. Black Cap is a restaurant that we won't tell everyone that they have to go to it, but we've now been here twice and enjoyed our meals both times. If you're in the area and need a place to relax and drink/eat, you should stop by. read more

The restaurant is clean and attractive and the food is good. But the service was deplorable! These servers need to learn not to judge people. More people have tattoos than don't now. Many very wealthy, intelligent, classy people have tattoos, piercings etc. we took our kids and Grandchildren on vacation here and all of us ate at The Black Grille and were made fun of, talked about and treated terribly to the point that our meal was ruined. Our Granddaughters asked why the ladies were saying mean things about their daddy. Shameful bullying by servers and they were bullying the sweetest, kindest man and his family you could ever meet and he makes a six figure income. We are classy people so we rose above and still left our standard 25% tip in hopes that it might educate them. read more

Amazing! I am a local and native if North Conway and had honestly only been here once. So I went in the other night with a friend and boy did we endulge. I started with the Tropical escape drink off their drink menu...so tasty my gosh! Then we split the lobster risotto cakes with the basil aioli...spectacular! For dinner I had the haddock and the sherry cream sauce and jasmine rice really set this meal off, also had shrimp and veggies and reasonably priced! I was extremely pleased! went here after a hike at Dianas bath. we had a dog and they were very accommodating and friendly. started with Caesar salad which was a nice portion and very balances with dressing and toppings. also served with charred lettuce which was perfect! ordered a side on onion rings which were very good although slightly overdone. for mains we got waygu burger which had alpina cheese which was unique and I would recommended substituting red onions for caramelized onions. the veggie burger and salmon salad were also good but nothing to right home about. read more

Tonight was our first time in. It was busy in the restaurant as it's Saturday at 5:30pm but the place was running like a well-oiled machine. Our waiter was wonderful; friendly and knowledgeable. We started with the French onion soup and the pretzel dip. Both were delicious. We both built our own burgers and ordered them rare. It was nice to be able to get the temp we like rather than medium like most offer. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if your in the area. read more

Stopped in on a whim last night after arriving for vacation and was pleased. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. When we arrived (5pm) the restaurant was very empty. Seated quickly. The kids got pizza and Mac & cheese, no different than anywhere else and I did not expect it to be. The grilled chicken caprese sandwich was more than enough for me and very good. A little smaller than I expected, but I did not go hungry. My husband ordered the 2369' and loved it. The side salad was very large. The only thing we ordered that we did not care for was the cole slaw. It had virtually no dressing of any kind on it. Tasted very much like just cole slaw mix. It's a side, no big deal to me. We were pretty impressed with our food! Hubby got a burger and I got the chicken sandwich with apple in it. The bread with both was very good and tasted homemade. I would emphasize the "OK" part of the rating vs the "A-OK". We had gotten there around 7:30 at night - certainly not late by any definition of supper. I wanted to try the chicken kabobs but they were out, the kids wanted french fries with their meal but only after getting their food brought to them did the waitress alert us that they only had sweet potato fries left. I felt like this was a mini version of the Cheese Shop skit in Monty Pythons. While the food was ok, I've certainly had better. If I could, I'd give it more a 2.5 stars.Seems like it may offer better drinks. As for the decor, I am not sure if it knows what type of restaurant it wants to be. It's upscale yet tries to be kid friendly. It's like a trendy (almost too trendy?) mountain retreat complete with a fake looking fireplace yet provides a fair amount of flat panel TV's. Some menu items sounded a bit odd to my boyfriend and I. Overall we had a great experience. The restaurant is just what North Conway needs. Perfect for date night, the restaurant offers an intimate environment for guests. I ordered the lobster roll- picked out all the celery. After a terrible experience at another restaurant of not getting my food (See my last Thai review for info), I came with my partner here, starving, cranky, and annoyed. My partner put in a drink order for a Manhattan, and the waitress knew the right questions to ask, bourbon or whiskey, lowball or martini. She scored very big points for that. We quickly put in our order for the Honey Sriracha Wings as we were starving. They quickly came out, and boy, they were good! They weren't overly spicy or sweet. It was just the right balance. Of course, we looked like animals while eating them because we were so hungry. We both ordered "make your own burger". He got the regular beef burger with onions, blue cheese, and truffle aioli. I got the veggie burger, mushroom, tomato salsa, banana peppers, and garlic aioli. The beef burger was good, and don't expect much strong truffle taste in the aioli. It is a very light mayo really. But the beef burger was cooked wonderfully and moist. My veggie burger was very interesting. It's is mainly a black bean mixture that easily felt apart, so it was a slight chore to eat it neatly. It just kept breaking and falling apart, but I patted it back together with my fork. The salsa went very nicely with the veggie burger, so I recommend that combo! Our waitress was very nice, prompt, and attentive. We had given her a warning about our attitude and rumbling bellies. Needless to say, she went above and beyond her service. The place was a little dark for my tastes, but I think they're trying to go classy and trendy. The location is a little odd, and away from a lot of the main things in North Conway, so you could easily miss this place. However, I highly recommend you come here for good burgers and people who know their drinks. read more

We had lunch here today. I loved it. The decor was modern for the location, and, the place was clean! yea for clean! :) Well, I am a burger seeker, I love them. So, I had another one today. Here. (yes I know I had one the night before, but burgers are the best food! You can hold it in your hand and they are so good!) It was perfect. Cooked and seasoned just right. My husband got a burger as well. I don't know the name, but it had the truffle mayo and caramelized onions. I had a bite and it was so good! The only minor complaint I have is that the service from the kitchen was slow...with two kids, we need to have food on the table quickly. But the girls were occupied with crayons and paper. Upon Biting into my Spicy Chicken Satay...They were COLD as a ROCK.....and DRY.. My wife did really enjoy the RED TAIL TRAIL wings. Good Flavor gen tso's Sauce. When the food arrived the waitress asked if we needed anything and left....Only to return later with the Check....20 min later.... I'm a local guy and this is a restaurant I still went back to, after finding a piece of rubber in my burger. The place closes at 10, it's 9.43 and I call in for a basic burger to go. The server at the bar area, cause I know him, tells me they wrapped up for the night. It's a Saturday night in August, about 20 min before closing. If that's your business philosophy, you're lucky for tourists. I end up getting a great burger from Delaneys, a North Conway landmark, great pub for locals and tourists alike: great food and the great people to serve it. Black Cap proved us wrong. A slick, dark, sports bar/club interior is punctuated by flat screen TVs, a big bar, and the wait staff. We were able to eat outside on the patio. The service was efficient and friendly. It is an independent restaurant, too. I stuck with two smaller dishes. The calamari was a little too heavily breaded for my taste but, still, it was fresh and tasty. I then had a cup of their veggie four bean chili. It was rich, thick, hearty, and tasty. My husband their chopped salad with grilled chicken. A composed salad, it came to the table looking good. He declared it delicious. When we next venture to central New Hampshire, we look forward to another taste of Black Cap. read more

Rainy Sunday afternoon, we stopped after coming off a hiking trail. We sat at the high tops in the bar. The bartender came right over and greeted us. He gave specials and some recommendations. We both had the beet salad which was delicious, well made had nicely done candied walnuts. We started with martini's which were perfect. I had the bouliabaise special and my wife had the mussels app. My entree was great, the seafood was cooked perfectly. Served with asavory saffron broth, tomatoes, shaved fennel and generous amount of seafood. Very nicely done. The mussels were slightly over done but not completely the flavor was good. We finished with maple creme brûlée, coffee and sambucca snifters. The brûlée was creamy and tasted good. My wife thought the brûlée topping was a bit thick. I ordered the 3-bean vegetarian chili and was very pleased with the crisp cheese on top . I also ordered the quesadilla and was unfortunately displeased as it was bland. My boyfriend ordered the sirloin steak tips so I was able to have some , very great flavor with a good sized portion of mashed potatoes and vegetables .
